Filmfare Exclusive: Watch Aby’s Baby groove to his all time smash hits

Sizzling with his twinkle toes:
The goodwill that Junior B enjoys in the film industry has to be seen to be believed. And it was very obvious recently when he performed on the Filmfare stage to a rapt audience. If the applause he drew at the end of the show is any indicator, our bet is he is well and truly in his father’s ways.

Abhishek: the latest power brand in Bollywood

Abhishek’s popularity charts have been soaring so much over the past year that the Junior B is touted to fetch endorsement fees ranging quite close to that of the Shah Rukhs and Aamirs. Abhi was recently signed on by an international watch brand and the amount we are told is quite an unheard kinda figure. Looks like the Abhishek Bachchan era has arrived .

That the shoot of J P Dutta’s yet to be released ‘Umrao Jaan’ is where the apparent flames of love ignited between Abhishek and Ash is now well documented. When Abhi was asked recently how he was enjoying shooting for his first period drama, he said: “It’s very easy. All I have been doing is sitting on gadelas and watching Aishwarya dance.” Vaah! Life ho toh Aishi!!...What say Abhi

This most eligible bachelor of Bollywood recently turned 30. And life is looking quite sunny with an envious recent box office record and a possibly impending marriage. For someone who started off with 19 flops on the trot, that’s a turnaround of sorts. So, let’s give you a ready reckoner……

Abhi’s career began with J P Dutta’s ‘Refugee’…with a tagline that said “A human story”. Unfortunately, the film about India-Pakistan unity met with quite a cold response at the box office. Naturally, the film sank without a trace but Abhi was noted for his intensity.

His next release was ‘Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya’, a film about a tourist who visits Agra and falls in love with a local happy-go-lucky musician (played by Abhishek). Needless to elaborate, the film didn’t do much to boost Abhishek’s status as a quality actor.

His next release was also his first with Aishwarya, ‘Dhai Akshar Prem Ke’. And although the film wasn’t much to talk about, looking back at it now it is sure to have some hysterical value.

‘Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai’ was next in line. Another forgettable outing for Junior B. And another forgiven act of mediocrity, you might say.

A lesser known Bengali movie ‘Desh’ starring the young gun who was to share screen space with his mother for the first time. A critically acclaimed movie, Abhi was now emerging as a seasoned campaigner, acting skills included.

It’s easy to guess the outcome of some movies even as you watch its first promos on air. ‘Haan Maine Bhii Pyaar Kiya’ is one of those. If you are a real film buff as we are, this one’s sure to have left you cold. What a waste… of a watch, besides all the resources.

A prayer for togetherness, the tagline said. A not-bad bitter sweet family saga, we knew now that no one could steal the show when Abhishek was on screen….multi starrer and all, Abhishek was carving his own niche in the minds of the audience.

Abhi was making a habit of making films with old childhood chums, Goldie Behl and now Gurudev Bhalla… a trait he soon realized wasn’t doing him too much good. The movie was good; to be fair but it just didn’t click. Fate was testing this talented mortal.

Just when you thought that the track records were bound to improve….even by the law of averages, you were served another stinker. Even the most die hard Abhi fans were losing faith…May be luck was not on his side.

His following releases ‘Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost’, ‘Zameen’, ‘LOC Kargil’, ‘Run’ and ‘Kuch Na Kaho’ also met with a similar fate. Slightly more prominent among the lot was ‘Kuch Na Kaho’, his second outing with Aishwarya Rai. But big times were beckoning.

Abhi’s big time came with Southern ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s ‘Yuva’. A film about the youth’s conflicting perspectives and aspirations, Abhishek’s character of a hard-as-nails hoodlum, Lallan Singh, drew applause from all sections of the audience and critics. The film left an indelible impact and Bollywood had received its new fire starter.
‘Phir Milenge’ and ‘Naach’ saw Abhishek evolve into a mature performer …Abhi could now stand shoulder to shoulder with any Bollywood biggie for performance. His true potential however was still to be realized.

And then arrived the purple patch which continues till now. ‘Dhoom’, ‘Bunty Aur Babli’, ‘Sarkar’, ‘Dus’, ‘Bluffmaster’ and many more in the pipeline. Surely, the spate of Abhishek’s latest hits have consolidated his position of a major crowd puller and catapulted him into the top bracket.

This 30 year old Aquarian’s motto in life is doing everything from the heart….And well, that is a trait that well emerges from the way Abhi moves to his song tracks, be it on screen or on stage. Here’s our lowdown of the best 10 Abhishek numbers….who can suggest you any better, after all?

Like we do it, the list appears in order of the movie’s release. So here it is.... First on the list is Mera Mahi Bada Sohna from ‘Dhai Akshar Prem Ke’. Now, this one makes the grade for it’s the first time the star duo appeared on screen and chemistry or no chemistry, the pair were having fun.

Next on the list is ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ from Shararat. This is the first time Abhishek grooved to the beats and we knew this presto did not suffer from the two left feet syndrome like most guys his built.
Next is ‘Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost’ (title track). The rustic charm of those Rajasthani moves!!

‘Kuch Na Kaho’ (title track) is another one where Abhishek seemed at his tender, romantic best…oozing charm and appeal.
Zara Zara from ‘Run’ is a perennial favourite…A melodious score with soft dance moves; it gave another dimension of the Bachchan style.

One Love…from ‘Rakht’. Now that’s the one that made him into the overnight ‘Item Boy’ of Bollywood A never before tag was coined by the scribes and Aby’s Baby was the talk of the town…this time for his sex appeal!!

hits

‘Bunty Aur Babli’ brought forth a new lean, mean Abhishek who sizzled with his twinkle toes in Nach Baliye. The world was watching and Abhi didn’t let them down.
And the one we all love…Perhaps, the song of the year 2005, Kajra Re (Bunty Aur Babli), believe it or not is an international hit. Bachchans’ camaraderie topped with Ash’s charisma and some really dhaasu moves - there we had a chartbuster that rocked the nation!

Then came the one that catapulted him into being a dancing star. Dus Bahaane became a party favourite and the moves were being copied by every starlet around the town. Abhishek was a Rock Star - an indefatigable one at that.

Listen up folks….Abhi’s behind the mike. And Hoof! What a smooth, uber cool and a husky baritone voice….Abhi turned out a natural crooner. Hip Hop buffs have a new idol, or so we’d like to believe. Now can we get Abhi to oblige? Encore!!

Abhishek bagged the Best New Face of the year (male) in the year 2000 for Refugee. He was back at the podium four years later receiving the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ at the 2004 Filmfare Awards, for his portrayal of Lallan Singh in ‘Yuva’. This year (2006) Abhi won the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for ‘Sarkar’. But these are the first few of many more to come. We vouch for that!!
