What's with the men!
Manisha Almadi Midha
[ Monday, April 10, 2006 07:36:02 pmTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

Men cannot live by Ash alone, they need their share of guns and fast cars. Therefore, the all-men movies.

Ladies, take a break. The dudes wanna do the talking now. With Bollywood trying out the all-hero movie model of Hollywood with success, the trend is just getting better and bigger.

So, is India ready to welcome its own version of Reservoir Dogs, Ocean's Eleven et al? If the films on the floor in Bollywood are anything to go by, the answer is yes.

While Dhoom 2 is readying for release, Indra Kumar has also launched an all-men movie, Dhamaal where he hasn't cast any actresses to lend glamour.

Of course, there will be "item numbers" in the movie, informs the film's producer Ashok Thakeria. "But the women don't influence the story in any way," he says.

So, what made the producer, who sometime back churned out another male caper Masti, decide on an all-men's movie? Ashok says, "We wouldn't have done this five years back. But the audience is ready today."

Adds Delhi-based film distributor Sanjay Mehta, "The filmmakers are experimenting to draw in the multiplex crowd." With hot bods like John Abraham, Abhishek Bachchan and Zayed Khan increasing the drool quotients, presence of actresses just for their sex appeal is becoming superfluous.

Thanks to these reasons, such movies have been able to make moolah in the past too. Cases in point are Sanjay Gupta's Plan, Kaante and Musafir.

"Dhoom was the biggest grosser of last year," says Sanjay, "while the more recent Dus is a winner courtesy its song Dus bahane... picturised on Abhishek Bachchan."

There were others like Chocolate which did average business while Elaan, Dosti and Fight Club sank without a trace. Says trade analyst Komal Nahta, "The success of a movie depends on its script but the all-men movies are here to stay."

Karan takes piracy to Cannes

UNI

Mumbai, April 9, 2006
Leading Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar will give a talk on tackling piracy at the Cannes Film Festival, which begins on May 17.
Talking to reporters here, Karan said he has 12 days of work left for his forthcoming film Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. "I will be going to Malaysia to shoot a song sequence there and another schedule in July. Hopefully, I plan to release the film in August," he said.
He said that he would be in Cannes in the first weekend of the festival, where he will look for overseas distribution rights of his film.
"I am having a stall at the film market there. I want to make the right contacts to tap the overseas distribution market and ensure that the Indian films are put on world map. I am also looking for overseas distribution rights for my film," he added.

Director Karan Johar has been very vocal against piracy since some time, and now he is taking his crusade to Cannes
Karan said he would give a talk on tackling piracy at the festival.
To a question on how he will style himself, as Aishwarya Rai and Mallika Sherawat made news for their designer clothes, glamour and style at the festival, Karan said: "They are glamorous women and have to take special attention to look good. I am content behind the camera. I am so stressed out due to my under production film, that I have got grey hair."
He said having Amitabh Bachchan back on the sets of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna after his illness was a moment of great happiness and joy.
The film has star-studded cast. Besides Big B, there are Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherji, Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan, Arjun Rampal and Urmila Matondkar.

'Right here right now' - is top song

Posted on 10 Apr 2006 # IANS

New Delhi: Vishal-Shekhar's catchy "Right here right now" song from "Bluffmaster" has taken over the no. 1 slot this week from A.R. Rahman's "Paathshala" ("Rang De Basanti"), which after ruling the charts for over a month is no more among the top 10 songs.

The top 10 Hindi songs are:

1. "Right here right now" - Film: "Bluffmaster"; Singers: Abhishek Bachchan and Sunidhi Chauhan; Music: Vishal-Shekhar. The rap song that returned last week is holding on to the top spot.

2. "Rang de basanti" - Film: "Rang De Basanti"; Singers: Daler Mehndi, Chitra; Music: A.R. Rahman. It has returned to the music charts after a long interval and Bhangra king Daler Mehndi is keeping his fans entertained with the energetic number.

3. "Jhoom jhoom" - Film: "Tom Dick And Harry"; Singer: Himesh Reshammiya; Music: Himesh Reshammiya. Another feel-good song from Reshammiya that has become popular in a very short time and is quickly climbing up the charts.

4. "Tu hi meri shab hai" - Film: "Gangster - A Love Story"; Singer: K.K; Music: Pritam. The new romantic number from Anurag Basu's forthcoming action-drama that has hit the chart this week creates the right mood for young lovers.

5. "Jhalak dikhlaja" - Film: "Aksar"; Singer: Himesh Reshammiya; Music: Himesh Reshammiya. Reshammiya is going places with the song.

6. "Meter down" - Film: "Taxi No.9211"; Singer: Adnan Sami; Music: Vishal-Shekhar. The magic of the hot and funky number featuring Nana Patekar and John Abraham is fading out. It has slipped down to number six position.

7. "Aashiq banaya aapne" - Film: "Aashiq Banaya Aapne"; Singers: Himesh Reshammiya, Shreya Ghoshal; Music: Himesh Reshammiya. Music director Reshammiya's first song as a singer, based on Sufi music, is back on the list.

8. "Jiya dhadak dhadak jaye" - Film: "Kalyug"; Singer: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan; Music: Rohail Hyat and Faisal Rafi. This is one of the best romantic songs of the year and continues to be a favourite.

9. "Mundeya" - Film: "Shaadi Se Pehle"; Singer: Sunidhi Chauhan; Music: DJ Akbar Sami. A foot-tapping naughty number is good for time pass.

10 "Fanna" - Film: "Humko Deewana Kar Gaye"; Singers: Sonu Nigam, Tulsi Kumar; Music: Anu Malik. The song failed to enthral the music lovers and slid down to last position on the list.

CELEB ADVANTAGE
The rising demand for celebrity endorsements pushes up the fee of seniors and market for newcomers

Posted online: Sunday, April 09, 2006 at 0000 hours IST

New celebrities, old rules
As the demand for hiring celebrities shoots up, companies sign on upcoming actors and players
Soft drinks, computers, soaps, chocolates, biscuits, paints, cars, suitings, footwear, watches, pens, hair oil, diamonds, pizzas - corporate India sells all these to the discerning consumer using the brand value of sport stars and movie actors. So you have celebrities who are willing to endorse anything for big bucks and are laughing all the way to the bank. With the government waiving off service tax on celebrity brand ambassadors in the recent Budget, celebrity endorsement deals are once again in the spotlight. While tax consultants believe the celebrity fee should be taxed, several corporates have welcomed the move and signed up a bunch of new faces. So you have M S Dhoni endorsing the Anil Ambani-controlled Reliance ADA Group, Sania Mirza espousing the cause of Sprite and Hyundai, Shah Rukh Khan selling Himani talcum powder and Hewlett Packard’s Compaq Presario notebooks and desktops, Saif and Soha Ali Khan waxing eloquent about Lenovo, Fardeen Khan selling paan masala, John Abraham riding Yamaha or sipping a diet cola, Abhishek Bachchan going fida over Ford Fiesta, Rani Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan test riding Chevrolet Aveo to Hema Malini’s daughter Ahana endorsing Kent water purifier, Udita Goswami selling plywood and Katrina Kaif selling diamonds. The list goes on.
For Dhoni, who’s also endorsing Pepsi, Reebok, TVS Motors, Orient Fans, Mysore Soaps, British Petroleum and Videocon, Reliance-ADAG will be one of his “biggest endorsement deals”. Tennis sensation Sania Mirza has three brand new endorsement deals, after the Australian Open in 2005. Her new endorsements (GVK Industries, Sahara, Atlas Cycles, Tata Tea and Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh) have made her valuation next only to Tendulkar, Ganguly and Dravid.
GM India has signed Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherji to endorse its mid-sized sedan, Chevrolet Aveo. “The Chevrolet Aveo is a new generation car with class, looks, style and great mileage. Saif and Rani represent style and are well-entrenched icons for the people the campaign is addressing,” says Rajeev Chaba, president and MD, GM India.
Abhishek Bachchan, another new convert to the endorsing game, managed to grab eyeballs with his new Ford campaign. A dipstick study showed the ad had 70% recall within three weeks of it being aired on TV. And it seems to have translated into sales. Ford had rustled up bookings for 10,000 cars till the second half of February. Bachchan says that he is “careful about the brand profile before signing up”.
John Abraham, who is also getting popular in the endorsement market, says, “Brands should have a clear connection with my personality. I like to be known by the brands I endorse as much as the other way around.” The actor is making money by endorsing Samsung Mobiles, Fast Track Titan Eyegear and Yamaha Bikes. The latest addition to the list is his teaming up with Bipasha Basu to sell anti-dandruff shampoo.
Banks have also turned to brand ambassadors. Though all of them maintain that they have done well by getting brand ambassadors, they are unanimous that this is backed with the banks’ product portfolio and customer care.
ICICI, which had Amitabh Bachchan earlier, has now SRK for NRI banking. Bank of Rajasthan has Hema Malini endorsing it. Says Pravin Tayal, CMD, “Since she became our brand ambassador, our visibility among the public has increased.” Dena Bank has Juhi Chawla endorsing it. Says chief manager Sanjiv Nigam, “Chawla’s youthful, positive image has added to our visibility.” Rahul Dravid is the brand ambassador for Bank of Baroda. Explains Anil K Khandelwal, CMD, “BoB wanted to change its logo and roped in a brand ambassador for the first time to give it a modern touch.”
SRK, one of the most sought-after celeb endorsers, can’t have enough. So in the past few months he’s also joined the Emami brand club and is the face for Compaq Presario. He says, “Being a techno-enthusiast, I was happy to promote Presario desktops and notebooks. I have been using a Compaq Presario for a decade.”
K K Swamy, deputy managing director, Toyota India, says, “Brand ambassadors are part of marketing strategies used for brands at various stages to meet business and should be done judiciously.” Aamir Khan says the reason he chose to associate himself with Innova was because it “embodies values I hold dear to my heart. Perfection, innovation, versatility and performance are my core values”.
Max New York Life has just signed up Rahul Dravid as its brand ambassador. Says Dravid, “I am pleased to be associated with a life insurance company that you can trust for financial planning.”
Pepsi has just signed up Priyanka Chopra as its new brand ambassador this summer. Reclusive musician A R Rahman, who endorsed Airtel earlier, has just lent his name to Worldspace because “I was among the first to get one for myself two years back.”
Second rung celebrities, who would earlier have not been considered, are also being employed. Rajpal Yadav endorses Araldite Carpenter, a synthetic resin adhesive. Says Asit Adhikari, regional director, India and Middle East, Huntsman Advanced Materials (India), “For us, the carpenter is a key target audience and Yadav has a huge following there.” Boman Irani and Satish Shah are peddling pizzas, Irfan and Rahul Bose are endorsing mobiles and Arshad Warsi is the face of a credit card. New favourites Ajay Devgan and Kajol, who were wary about endorsements, are faces for Tata Indicom, Whirlpool, Kotak Mahindra and Round Table India.
Santosh Desai, president, McCann Erickson India, says, “You have only a handful of A-list celebs. In the future, brands will create a demand for new celebrities, who will be endorsing products.”
As long as corporates continue to foot fancy bills of celeb endorsers and consumers are in awe of celebs, the party will go on.
Who Costs How Much?
Chiranjeevi 4.5-5.0
Aamir Khan 3.5-4.5

Meri awaaz suno...
JHUMARI NIGAM
[ Sunday, April 09, 2006 08:13:28 pmTIMES NEWS NETWORK ]

Actors doing playback singing for their films are no longer a rarity. Here's checking out the new phenomenon.

If Amitabh Bachchan proved his musical prowess with Mere angne mein, then Bachchan Jr called out 'Right here, right now' to all his admirers more recently. And now we have Jaya Prada turning into a hip-hop singer.

So what's with stars crooning for their own songs: Are they exploring new horizons or is it just a publicity gimmick?

"Singing should be strictly left to singers," says playback singer Babul Supriyo. "There are times when we need a Shah Rukh or an Aamir Khan adding novelty by humming a few lines but intelligent actors won't enter the studio on a regular basis.

As long as it remains a novelty however, the essence of the song remains," he explains. Though Supriyo admits that getting actors to sing is good publicity for a film.

Actor Priyanshu Chatterjee agrees. "It sounds a bit gimmicky to me. I can't justify a song since I am not trained as a singer. It won't be straight from the heart or emotional," says Chatterjee.

And despite being a 'music and dance person', actress Koena Mitra has maintained a strict no entry to any recording studio. "I am barely three movies old and I don't want to juggle with everything.

I'd rather concentrate on my acting skills," she says. So juggling isn't such a great idea after all? "You don't change your profession with one song!

When someone like Sanjay Dutt or Abhishek Bachchan sing, it's more of an attitude-based song. The day I reach that position in my career, even I can experiment and get away with it," she says candidly.

Interestingly, though the actors sound reluctant to cross the line, seasoned singers see no threat to their territory. "It's a good sign to see actors singing.

The world of creative minds is different... we will always feel that talent and opportunity should be utilised. How can they make me feel insecure about my work?" says Kailash Kher.

But the final word comes from music-director Anand Raj Anand, "It's neither about publicity nor about exploring horizons, it's about comfort level.

If the audience is comfortable seeing their star sing and so is the actor himself, then the music background becomes secondary."

At the movies

Happy Birthday, Jaya

Subhash K Jha

It's strange how much of what we really need to value in our cinema goes unnoticed while the muck gets more than its fair share of attention. Take the two films that were released this week.

No one can accuse Pankaj Parasher's Banaras of being a classic. But give me spiritualism and a graceful Urmila Matondkar in Banaras rather than the tight skirts and plunging tops of Mallika Sherawat in Shaadi Se Pehle.

In recent times, real actors have always been hard to come by. What Motilal, Meena Kumari, Balraj Sahni, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bhaduri and most recently Tabu do on screen is to make everyone around to forget the presence of a camera. Yesterday when she turned a year 'younger', I couldn't help thinking about Jaya Bachchan’s (nee Bhaduri) tremendous but totally neglected contribution to mainstream Hindi cinema.

I'd rate Jaya Bhaduri a natural in masala movies. Sure, we had naturals like Nargis, Meena Kumari and Nutan earlier. But Jaya gave the Hindi film heroine a pure-cotton image with the pride and confidence of a glamour statement. Synthetics were suddenly suffocating.

In that legendary introductory sequence in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Guddi (1971), where Jaya stormed late into a school prayer meeting, she whipped up an interest that very few actresses have been able to generate. The impact of her films from 1971 to 1973 (when she quit to become Mrs Amitabh Bachchan) was beyond anything I've seen accomplished by any female actor.

In films like Uphaar, Annadata, Koshish, Parichay, Bawarchi, Anamika, Phagun, Zanjeer, Abhimaan and Mili, Jaya wasn't just a performing icon she was also a fashion- setter. The way she cut her hair, styled her blouses and wore her saris made the average middleclass woman a high-priestess of glamour and fashion.

“Yes, but no one remembers all this any more,” she told me in a reflective moment. I've known Jaya closely for several years now. I was her fan first and got to know her long before I became acquainted with her husband, whom I shied away from.

“Meet him. You'll be surprised,” she urged me with the firmness that I find hard to resist. As usual, she was right. I know of very few people in the film industry who are as straightforward, blunt and unaffected as Jaya, so much so that it's always a problem to reproduce her words in print. Since she doesn't censor her words it's up to the interviewer to do the needful.

It takes a Jaya Bachchan to very bluntly tell me that I'm writing too much about Amitabh Bachchan. It takes a woman of substance to detach herself completely from a man she loves more than any living person, and to give unflinching advice to him. She loves her superstar-husband enough to tell him when he's going wrong. I think Jaya is the only woman Mr Bachchan listens to. He has no choice.

It's best to keep her off record. And that's an arrangement which suits us both. She's able to speak her mind. I'm able to stop being a journalist in her presence. That doesn't stop me from wondering why her position in the cinematic hierarchy as well as the Bachchan household has been so underplayed.

I can't say Hindi cinema wouldn't be what it is without her contribution (could we say this about any individual?). I'm not so sure about the Bachchan household. Though outwardly it seems she takes only the required amount of interest in running their tastefully done-up and spotless home, I don't think Jalsa would stand on its feet without the active supervision of Jaya Bachchan.

I am aware of the trauma she went through in December when her husband fell ill. It wasn't an easy time for Jaya. Whether Abhishek’s broken engagement or the recent political crisis…Jaya never allows herself the luxury of a public tantrum. If there's an iron lady in the entertainment business, it's got to be her.

The Jaya I know is a woman who doesn't flinch from telling you the truth. That honesty, a hallmark of her performances, is an integral part of her. Often, her fans (which included my dad-Jaya was the only actress of   the post-1950s era whose films he never missed) wonder how she could give it all up for the sake of domesticity. Today, when I see the calm pride in her eyes at Abhishek's success I know the answer. When it comes to the two men in her life, nothing else matters.

Bachchan to woo teenager
   By: Subhash K Jha
   April 7, 2006
Amitabh Bachchan with Ram Gopal Varma
Amitabh Bachchan has started shooting for two films that feature him in radical (for him) roles — Ram Gopal Varma’s Nishabd and Balakrishan’s Cheeni Kum. “I start Cheeni Kum (also starring Tabu) today (April 6).

It’s an audacious film. Indian cinema is going through a hugely exciting phase, and I’m part of that movement,” says Bachchan.

In Varma’s Nishabd, Bachchan has a Lolita-like love story with an 18-year old girl. “You can’t always be the perfect human being on screen,” he says. “To show a human failing on screen is a sign of acceptance and a measure of creative freedom.

Cinema is about human realationships. To deny the existence of such feelings in humans would be wrong. Ramu is extremely honest in his work.

Even before he made Sarkar, he admitted that The Godfather was his inspiration for it. But Sarkar was treated in a completely different manner.”

Jhatpat film

AB further explains, “Ramu and I have been toying with several projects, including  Sholay, Sarkar 2 and Ek.

The Sarkar sequel and Ek have to be coordinated with Abhishek’s dates (he’s in both), and Sholay requires a lot of physical activity, which I’m not up to, at the moment.  Ramu and I decided to do this romantic film at a stretch in 25 days.”

He admits Nishabd is a departure. “It is an intense love story that looks into closed doors to see the passions that simmer within every human being.

But we won’t be going into the physical aspect of  the relationship at all. “ AB says he had no hesitation is doing a part that required him to be romantically involved with an 18-year old girl. “I need to work and I need challenges,” he says.

Sugar-free fun

About Cheeni Kum, the actor says, “It’s a sarcastic, humorous take on love. It has a lot of tongue-in-cheek humour. It’s very different from anything that’s been done before. I think it’s extremely brave of today’s filmmakers to want to talk about supposedly taboo topics, to project them artistically.”

Speaking of “taboo”, AB is all praise for  his Cheeni Kum co-star. “Tabu is gorgeous. What an artiste! Ours is a fun film. Doing a serious film together would’ve been too obvious.”

Abhishek Bachchan sing eight songs for their next
Subhash K Jha

Vishal-Shekhar, the composers responsible for dance floor scorchers like ‘Dus bahaane’ and ‘Right here right now’ (that made Abhishek Bachchan a desi hip-hop star), are getting ready to ignite another firecracker – an album sung entirely by non other than Mr. Cool himself, Abhishek Bachchan.

Vishal, the more vocal of the two, says, “We aren't supposed to talk about it as we don't know exactly how it will shape up. All we know is that it will be something on an international scale. We have big plans, but Abhishek is busy. So it's up to him and Amitji, who features on the album too. So far we've only been jamming together. If all goes well, the album will be a milestone.”

Director Rohan Sippy will produce the album. “Considering that Rohan is a filmmaker, his producing our film is quite unique. We're also looking at international collaboration with artistes and musicians,” Vishal continues.

Vishal and Shekhar are glad that their music is connecting with the masses. “We're composing songs for Siddharth Anand's next film. The concept is more mature than Salaam Namaste. We're also doing Abubhav Sinha's Cash, and have just completed Rohit Shetty's Gol Maal. For Milan Luthria's next film, a love story, we'll write some love ballads. At the end of the day, Indian melodies will always be in demand. But no matter what we compose – it has got to be dynamic. Composers today need a vision. There are more Internet downloads and ring tones now than tapes.”

Vishal talks about Vishal-Shekhar's big 2005 triumphs, namely Dus and Bluff Master. “Shekhar and I love writing melodious songs. But right from ‘Dus bahaane’ to ‘Right here right now’, all the songs that were happening last year were up-tempo.”

Vishal never imagined that these tracks would become such a craze. “I'd attribute about ninety per cent of the success of those two songs to Abhishek. I think Abhishek, who's into hip-hop music, found a comfort zone in his dancing with ‘Dus bahaane’.”

What about fellow composer, and in some sense, market rival Himesh Reshammiya? “He's a big star today. But he's from a different school altogether,” Vishal comments. “I love his track ‘Soniye’ sung by KK. Himesh has a substantial range as a singer and a fantastic composing acumen. But I'm not impressed by his production values. I admire the volume of work he is doing. I can't see Shekhar and me doing more than one film at a time. It gets too hectic.”

What about remixes? “Never!” comes the answer.

More power to me: Abhishek Bachchan

It's finally over. The wait for this year's most eagerly anticipated film is over…or nearly. With the Big B's recovery, the remaining portion of Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna (KANK) is expected to be finished shortly Karan Johar has zeroed in on the date for release.

KANK is to be released on either August 4 or 11. "It could be either of the two Fridays," he says, currently neck-deep in post-production and just recovering from a severe bout of laryngitis.

This would be the first Karan Johar film that won't be released for Diwali. "We can't afford any delays. The film has gone way beyond budget. I can't reveal the figure. But it's astronomical. And then on top of that, there are all these rumours about what I've made. Kya kiya hai Karan Johar ne???

People expect this Karan Johar film to be a shocker. To some extent they will be shocked. I've gone into a different area of cinema and human relationships this time.

It takes me back to a state of complete honesty. I've done exactly what I want to do in KANK without caring about boxoffice results. To that extent KANK is my most uncompromising film since Kuch Kuch Hota Hai."

The Shah Rukh Khan-Rani-Mukherjee-Preita Zinta-Abhishek Bachchan quadrangle shot almost entirely in New York, goes into areas that might jolt audiences.

"How much so we shall soon know," says Karan as he awaits 'D' day in August.

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna in a title controversy
Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna is one of the most eagerly awaited films of 2006. Although it is expected to release around August, the film already finds itself in a controversy. The bone of contention is the title. Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury's Mind I Films is also making a film under the same name. The music of this film was launched in Delhi on Wednesday. The film's music has been composed by debutante music director Vivek. Kumar Sanu has sung the title track. Daler Mehndi was present at the occasion of the audio launch.

Apparently, Biswaroop had registered the title of his movie with the Registrar of the Trade Marks Department under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry in May 2005. He said, in India, only the Trade Marks Department has the right to register any product or film name. He denied allegations that this is a publicity stunt. In fact, he had even sent a legal notice to Karan Johar. While talking to the media, Biswaroop said that he too was looking forward to Johar's film, but under a different name. Karan Johar was unavailable for comment.

Does screen chemistry work?

Saibal Chatterjee

Mumbai, April 5, 2006
By Saibal Chatterjee
The first time Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai starred opposite each other - in Rohan Sippy's Kuch Na Kaho - the box office wasn't particularly kind to them. And then, the two, in the company of the Big B, swayed to the folksy beat of 'Kajra re' in Shaad Ali's Bunty aur Babli and swept everything before them.
Much water has rippled under the bridge since then. Abhishek and Aishwarya will be seen together in several upcoming films, including Yashraj Films' Dhoom 2, J.P. Dutta's Umrao Jaan and Mani Ratnam's Guru. Inevitably, talk has veered towards the subject of screen chemistry. Do they have it, or don't they?
Well, coming to think of it, it really doesn't matter. It isn't the chemistry between two actors that sells a film. It's the story and the treatment that does.
If Abhishek and Rani Mukherjee hit it off famously in Yuva  and Bunty Aur Babli, much of the credit would accrue to the script and the manner in which the director projected the pair on the screen. Theories that rest on things like on-screen rapport are rather fanciful, if not entirely a figment of the media's imagination.
The screen chemistry between the lead pair of a film cannot guarantee commercial success. Casting may be an important component of filmmaking, but it is never the only thing that determines a film's fate. Some stars do look good together because of the comfort level they share at work, but eventually that has nothing to do with box office returns.
Yes, A-list cast members do give a film a certain profile in the marketplace, but it is really the quality of the end product and the power of the histrionic inputs that eventually count.
Fans would give anything to see Shahrukh Khan and Kajol together on screen again, but did the King of Bollywood stop delivering box office hits simply because Kajol went into semi-retirement post-marriage? He obviously didn't.
Shahrukh has had hits with an assortment of female co-stars since - Chalte Chalte with Rani Mukherjee, Kal Ho Na Ho with Preity Zinta and Main Hoon Na with Sushmita Sen. Moral of the story: life goes on.
Of course, Shahrukh and Kajol's super successful on-screen association is a part of Bollywood folklore. Together, they have after all been in three of the biggest hits Mumbai movies have ever seen - Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. That doesn't, however, prove that chemistry between two actors has a salutary effect on the bottom-line of a film.
DDLJ, KKHH and K3G contained many other crowd-pleasing elements - other saleable stars, foot-tapping music, wonderful locations and high production values - that served to inveigle the masses. And, of course, they also had Shahrukh and Kajol. The film came first, not the star pair.
The value attached to romantic screen pairs obviously stems from the fact that popular Hindi cinema has, over the decades, been ruled by a succession of such couples.  The phenomenon began with Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani and continued via Raj Kapoor-Nargis and Dilip Kumar-Madhubala all the way down to Rajesh Khanna-Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan-Rekha, Dharmendra-Hema Malini and beyond.
But the career graph of one of Bollywood's finest contemporary actors, Aamir Khan, should be enough to disprove the theory. Consider Aamir's recent hits: Raja Hindustani, Ghulam, Sarfarosh, Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai and now, Rang De Basanti. Aamir has had a different female co-star in each of these films.
He worked with Karisma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani, Rani Mukherjee in Ghulam, Sonali Bendre in Sarfarosh, Gracy Singh in Lagaan, Preity Zinta in Dil Chahta Hai and British actress Alice Patten in Rang De Basanti. If Aamir's films click, it is because the masses love them, not because of who he shares screen space with.
Hrithik Roshan, too, tends to pick a new co-star with every film that he does although he has been seen on screen with Kareena Kapoor and Preity Zinta on more than one occasion. His list of co-stars is long - Kareena, Preity, Amisha Patel, Esha Deol and Rani Mukherjee. In his upcoming release, Krrish, he will be seen opposite Priyanka Chopra.
Madhuri Dixit, who reigned over Bollywood for well over a decade, never hitched her wagon to any single male superstar. From 1988's Tezaab  to 2002's Devdas, Madhuri delivered at least one superhit every year but, barring Anil Kapoor (her co-star in films like Beta, Jamai Raja, Kishen Kanhaiya and Pukaar), she never formed a permanent screen pairing with anybody.
She needed no crutches. No matter who her male co-star was  - Sanjay Kapoor in Raja, Ayub Khan in Mrityudand, Sanjay Dutt in Khalnayak  or Shahrukh Khan in Dil To Pagal Hai - she never failed to leave her own stamp on the film.
When Vivek Oberoi and Aishwarya Rai formed an item on the Bollywood social scene, Kyun… Ho Gaya Na sought to capitalise on the peaking popular interest in the personal life of the two stars. The move boomeranged big time and the film sank without a trace.
Similarly, music video maker-turned-director Ken Ghosh, who had earlier delivered a big hit starring Shahid Kapur, Ishq Vishq, paired the young actor with his real-life flame, Kareena Kapoor, in Fida.  Moviegoers did not quite flip for the idea.
We might see a bit of history being repeated when the screen pair Abhishek and Aishwarya - interest in their lives is at fever pitch - tests the box office waters later this year unless, of course, their films do the talking.

Do 'Stars' add shine to Motown?
Meenakshi Verma

[ TIMES NEWS NETWORK ]WEDNESDAY, APRIL 05, 2006 12:51:51 PM

NEW DELHI/ MUMBAI: What’s common to Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerjee, Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham, Abhishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Sania Mirza, Yuvraj Singh, Virendra Shewag and Mahendra Singh Dhoni?

Okay, we’re not doing a celeb quiz to check out whether you prefer your cricket more than your Bollywood.

They may have their own professional positioning on the screen or on a cricket field but there’s one thing common to the names on this list. All of them are brand ambassadors for mass-market car or bike models.

Celeb brand ams are not new in Motown. After all bike makers like Hero Honda have traditionally used everyone from Sourav Ganguly to Hrithik Roshan for product endorsements. Only right now it seems no auto marketer can sell a car or a bike without a brand ambassador to back him up.
Here’s the line-up: Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerjee for the Chevy Aveo, Abhishek Bachchan for the Ford Fiesta, Shah Rukh Khan and Sania Mirza for the Hyundai Santro and Getz respectively, Aamir Khan for the Toyota Innova, Virendra Shewag and Yuvraj Singh for Hero Honda, Jackie Chan for Bajaj Auto Discover, John Abraham for Yamaha and MS Dhoni for TVS Star City.

So what’s up with Motown marketers? Why this sudden rush to sign up brand ambassadors? Auto execs and brand managers say it’s all about cutting through the clutter.

There are so many new models and so much choice out there in the marketplace that no one can afford to let go of an eyeball-grabbing opportunity.

The difference say ad industry sources, is one of degree. Earlier a handful of companies used celeb brand ams as part of their marketing and branding strategy. Now no one wants to leave anything untried in their race for volumes and marketshare.
”It’s all about breaking the media clutter while marketing your product,” says GM India vice president, sales, marketing & after sales Ankush Arora. Agrees Arvind Saxena, vice president-marketing, Hyundai Motor India: “Its all about breaking the clutter and trying to strike a connect with customers on a personal level.”

So what gives in this search for a clutter break-through? Marketers call it the persona pitch.
“When we chose Shah Rukh Khan or Sania Mirza, the idea was to have somebody who matches the personality of our products,” says Saxena.

That match, say marketers, is crucial if the commercial and the brand are to stay alive in the consumer mind space. Says Nalin Kapoor, GM-marketing, Ford India, ”When we chose Abhishek Bachchan it was because his personality matched the personality of our product and we could position our brand accordingly.
That match of course has to be more than skin deep say ad experts. Because as eyeball grabbing devices go, brand ams don’t come cheap. The current lot, say ad sources, have cost auto companies anywhere between Rs 1-10 crore, depending on the bankability of the star. And not all celeb endorsements have managed to make a product hit bulls eye.

Says Subhabrata Ghosh, president and CEO, Celsius 100 (a Saachi & Saachi arm): “If the product has a problem, one has to understand that the celebrity can not fix that.

/photo.cms?msid=1478952
AB’s Baby is using his cool chic to endorse Ford Fiesta as a young product

If one is just using the celebrity to grab some eyeballs it will turn out to be a frivolous exercise.” Agrees Basabdutta Chowdhury, COO, Madison: “Brand ambassadors are basically for quick awareness and high brand recall.” Anything beyond that is asking for too much.

Auto marketers, for their part, say that the first blitz is important enough. Once the product gets initial attention, it gets a chance to prove its merit. And that’s no small gain.
P Narsimhan, vice-president-marketing, TVS breaks it down to three steps: “First: try to grab a consumer's attention; second use the attention as a platform to deliver an appealing brand message and third, find a good match between the celebrity and the product.”

Marketers also say sometimes the connect with the brand am is more a corporate strategy rather than a brand positioning. Celebs work well even to communicate a corporate idea rather than a product or brand pitch. Take Yamaha. The Japanese car maker roped in John Abraham as brand ambassador not just because he is a bike enthusiast.

“When we took John on about a year ago, it was because he had recently got a big hit and was at a stage in his career where he needed more hits to be as established as other people,” says Atul Gupta, head of sales & marketing, Yamaha.

“The same goes for us as well because we were also at a stage where we were trying to establish and connect with an India that’s young, stylish and cool.”

Of course, brand ams can also provide a break from just information-loaded product communication. Take Toyota which roped in Aamir Khan after its initial info-ended pitch was over. Explains explains K K Swamy, deputy MD, Toyota Kirloskar Motor:
“After we launched Innova, the first six months were spent providing product information. However, we felt the need to move on and build an aspirational image of the product. In order to strengthen the lifestyle image of Innova and make it more desirable to customers, we developed a new campaign using Aamir Khan as the brand ambassador whose values match the core values of the Innova-perfection, innovation, versatility &performance.”

The aspiration angle is important particularly for an Indian company breaking into a new tech mould. And that’s precisely why Bajaj Auto chose international (but Asian) star Jackie Chan for its Discover.

“We used Jackie Chan to build an aspirational image for our products and also because we were targeting different segments of customers where we wanted the 150 cc bike to be popular,” says S Sridhar, veep-marketing & sales, Bajaj Auto.

Similarly when Hyundai came into India, it used Shah Rukh Khan to establish a common-man connect with the Indian customer even though the company and the brand were totally new to this market.

So are brand ams the perfect marketing tool? Not quite. Celeb endorsements can swing both ways and sometimes a celeb can overshadow the product he endorses.

Says Hero Honda marketing head P S Sunder, “Of course creating a connect between the customer and brand is the main concept behind having a brand ambassador but one has to use it intelligently and not allow the celebrity to hijack the advertisement.”

Sunder explains how the Hero Honda team avoided that with its Super Splendor campaign. “In the Pankaj Kapoor ad, which pitches a mass appeal product, we have made sure we did not hijack the message with a celebrity.

And with our other brand ambassadors like Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag we have to be very careful so that it doesn't happen.”
So much for positioning, but what about real benefits? Do brand ams really make a difference to sales? Most auto marketers say it’s impossible to establish an exact co-relation between the brand ambassador and the sales tally, particularly in the auto industry.”

Brand ambassadors can mean different things to different people,” says Sunder. “In FMCG products, for instance, one can quantify the impact. But when it comes to durables or automobiles, that’s pretty much impossible.”

Of course most auto marketers also agree that unless the sales graph improves, no one will spend big money on a celeb brand am. TVS’ Narsimhan is pretty clear-cut about the whole issue: “If it wasn't making any difference to sales we wouldn't be putting our money on brand ams like Dhoni,” he says.

However most companies conduct brand recall surveys to gauge the success of the brand ambassador. “It's very difficult to actually compartmentalise how much the sales increased...yet when we conducted post-launch brand recall surveys we could gauge having Shah Rukh Khan or Sania Mirza increased our sales,” says Hyundai’s Saxena. Agrees Sunder, “We understand how successful our campaign is by figuring out how well the consumers recall our brand.”

Ad experts say the final litmus test of a brand am is what’s called the FRED principle. “F stands for familarity of the celebrity; R stands for relevance of the celebrity to the brand; E stands for the right emotional connect and D stands for distinct which basically means being able to break through the media clutter,” says Ghosh. When all four click, the brand am is a winner.

Agrees Bajaj Auto’s Sridhar: “At the end of the day the brand ambassador is just one element in the whole marketing concept and only helps initially. The product manufacturer must capitalise on that in the future.”

After all, no matter how popular the brand am and how slick the campaign, they still can’t sell a bad product.

Preity in Shaad Ali’s ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom!

Preity Zinta finally signed on the dotted line for Yash Raj Films' next. Shaad Ali of 'Bunty Aur Babli' fame to direct the film, titled 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom'.
Buzz is there, Abhishek Bachchan will be seen opposite Preity. However, Abhishek hasn't been finalized yet. Talks are on. As per close sources, Abhishek, too much busy with his current shooting schedule, cannot give Shaad his dates before October. In this case, Shaad may have to think of some other guy for male lead. On contacted, Shaad Ali, however, refused to divulge anything about that.

No stones unturned
   By: Reshma Jain
   February 19, 2006
EKTA KAPOOR
WEARS:
Two red corals, a pearl, a yellow sapphire

WHAT THEY DO: Red coral is good for physical health while pearls provide mental peace. But the latter must agree with your natal chart. Not everyone can wear Yellow Sapphire but it can be good for marriage, money and great prosperity.
PANDEYJI SAYS: Ekta’s stones will be good for her. Her ascendant is Cancer and all those with this ascendant and her kind of natal chart grow to be powerful like Pandit Gangadhar Nehru, his son Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi.
JEETENDRA
WEARS: Red coral and a yellow sapphire
WHAT THEY DO: Red Coral (Munga) is good for 70 per cent people even if not necessarily in their natal chart. It is good for almost all diseases including blood pressure, epileptic fits — a touch of this stone can stop fits immediately.
PANDEYJI SAYS: The coral is especially good for Jeetendra’s health. This stone will prevent him from any water diseases or drowning, and also from any kind of enemies or a weapon attack.
AMITABH BACHCHAN
WEARS:
Blue sapphire, opal and emerald
WHAT THEY DO: Opal is worn to bring diseases under control and ward off the evil eye. Blue sapphire is cooler than even the pearl, and helps remove obstacles. It also purifies the mind, charging it with positive thoughts and attitude.
PANDEYJI SAYS: Sapphire and diamond are very good for his career. He used to wear these earlier. But opal is not good for him. Since wearing it, his health has started to deteriorate. He should not wear the opal at all. In most cases, it’s the bringer of diseases.
JAYA BACHCHAN
WEARS:
Red coral
WHAT IT DOES: In the south, wearing a coral is very auspicious; women wear it around the neck to increase their husband's life span and the years of marital bliss. But “mangliks” should not wear it around their fingers.
PANDEYJI SAYS: Jaya should avoid this stone for the moment.
ABHISHEK
WEARS
:
Blue sapphire and emerald
WHAT THEY DO: Blue sapphire helps remove obstacles and is also good for eye problems. Emerald stabilises you mentally, increases logical reasoning power (but it has to be suitable for your ascendant). It is also used for kidney-related diseases.
PANDEYJI SAYS: Abhishek's horoscope is natally powerful. This is his best phase as he is going through the sun's mahadasha and it is there for two more years but according to our astrologer, he should not wear emerald and sapphire together as they are not good for him or his father.
SUBROTO ROY WEARS: An opal
WHAT IT DOES: Semi-precious stones like opal are worn to keep diseases in check. An opal is white in colour and inside it, are rainbow colours. According to Pandeyji, opal is a jogi’s stone, not a bhogi’s — it’s a stone of renunciation.
PANDEYJI SAYS: Earlier, Subroto was wearing sapphire, diamond and emerald, which gave him a good phase, but after wearing this particular stone, rumours about his death started even though he was alive.
AMAR SINGH
WEARS:
An emerald
WHAT IT DOES: Emerald wards off depression or fickle mindedness. People with severe kidney problems wear this stone with red coral. It is also used to deflect poisonous powers. It is said that kings drank water from emerald vases.
PANDEYJI SAYS: Emerald is very good for Amar Singh. He should definitely stay away from opal. Mangal (Mars) is his obstacle, so he will be surrounded by controversies and problems but there will be tremendous prosperity.
SANJAY DUTT
WEARS:

Yellow sapphire and moonstone
WHAT THEY DO: Although yellow sapphire brings all-round prosperity, it cannot be worn by anyone and everyone. But depending on your chart, it could bring you a happy married life, money and immense prosperity.
PANDEYJI SAYS: Sanjay's yellow sapphire will give him mental peace and be good for his career. He should wear the best quality sapphire and not take it out even for a minute.

'Kabhi Alvidaa...' set for monsoon release

By Subhash K. Jha, IANS

Karan JoharThe wait for this year's most eagerly anticipated film "Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna" is over as director Karan Johar has decided to release it in August instead of during Diwali.
As Amitabh Bachchan, who plays an important role in the film, is back under the arc lights after a surgery, the remaining portion of "Kabhi Alvidaa..." ("KANK") is expected to be complete shortly and Johar has zeroed in on the date for release.
"KANK" is to hit the screens on either Aug 4 or 11.
"It can be either of the two Fridays," Johar, who is currently neck-deep in post-production and recovering from a severe bout of laryngitis, told IANS.
This would be the first Johar film that won't be released on Diwali.
"We can't afford any delays. The film has gone way beyond budget. I can't reveal the figure. But it's astronomical. And then on top of that, there are all these rumours about what I have made.
"People expect this Karan Johar film to be a shocker. To some extent they will be shocked. I have gone into a different area of cinema and human relationships this time," said Johar.
"It takes me back to a state of complete honesty. I have done exactly what I want to do in 'KANK' without caring about box office results. To that extent 'KANK' is my most uncompromising film since 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'."
The Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Preita Zinta and Abhishek Bachchan quadrangle, shot almost entirely in New York, goes into areas that might jolt audiences.
"How much so we shall soon know," said Johar as he awaits his D-day.

Karan Johar to shock people!

by Subhash K Jha

Is the Big B in a rose syrup?

Dhoom, Sathiya, Boom. The creative juices are flowing at the Health Juice Centre at the King’s Cirle Garden.  It is one of the many outlets in the area, but for the names of the juices, which are inspired by Bollywood films. “You will get many fruit juices and milkshakes across the city but our speciality is the amazingly different combinations coupled with the wacky names,” says Sunil Dongre who with brother Vilas started the outlet about 10 years ago.
The outlet, bustling with kids, youngsters and adults from 10 am to am, uses Bollywood to make a interesting sip. While it has been around for ten years, the idea of naming juices after blockbusters came to the brothers around two years ago. For instance, when Dongre was looking for a name for his new drink, Dhoom was showing in theatres.
The sweet lime and lemon speciality, combined with rose syrup, is named after the famous Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and John Abrahim-starrer. Many swear is the best on the menu. Another current favourite among customers, though, is the box-office-dud Boom, a combination of sweet lime, lemon and poppy seeds (commonly known as khas-khas).
To add to the chart toppers is named after the romantic film Saathiya and made of raw mango, strawberry and green grapes. Apparently, this is not a verdict on the stars. “We are not using any ingredients keeping in mind the personality of the star or the film,” says Dongre. The purpose is just to pay tribute to the latest hit movie.

Star families seek to shake off feud shadow
- Emissaries shuttle between Sonia camp and Bachchans to dispel notions of animosity
April 2: The Nehru-Gandhi family and the Bachchans are keen on dispelling the impression of being feuding clans.
While the reason for the falling out between the once-close families has been a matter of long speculation, the recent controversy over Jaya Bachchan losing her Rajya Sabha membership, followed by the drama of Sonia Gandhi’s resignation as an MP, has reinforced the picture of two sides in battle.
That may or may not be true but, in the wake of the office-of-profit fiasco that claimed Jaya and Sonia, Amitabh Bachchan is said to have prevailed upon his wife to stay off politics for the time being. The Samajwadi Party was keen to field her for the Rajya Sabha again but Amitabh is believed to have politely declined the offer.
Brother Ajitabh may have played a role in developing this new attitude. Ajitabh, the younger of the two, who himself broke with Amitabh — again for reasons that are not in public knowledge — has moved closer after the star’s illness.
Bachchan family insiders said that to suggest the brothers had made up would be premature but “all the steps in the right direction are being taken”. The person responsible for the partial reconciliation is Ajitabh’s artist daughter Namrata who is determined to bury the differences.
From Sonia’s side, common friends have communicated to the Bachchans that the Congress president “neither has the desire nor inclination” to cause any inconvenience. After the complaint about Jaya holding an office of profit in Uttar Pradesh, despite being an MP, was made to the President by a Congressman, the Samajwadi Party had alleged that Sonia was behind it.
The emissaries claiming to represent the Nehru-Gandhi family are said to have spoken of the “emotional history” and “genuine affection” the two sides have shared for over six decades.
Sources said Sonia is not blind to the fact that Amitabh has been facing health and family problems. The star underwent a surgery some time ago and Delhi’s social circles are agog with rumours of trouble in daughter Shweta’s personal life. She is married to Nikhil Nanda.
Amitabh, apparently, had reservations about Jaya’s visit to the Bachchan family’s ancestral village Babu Patti in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, the sources said. It is more than likely that he was aware there would be repercussions as Uttar Pradesh is a prestige issue for the Nehru-Gandhi family, which zealously guards its inheritance.
Fifty kilometres from Allahabad, the Nehru family’s hometown, Pratapgarh also shares its border with Rae Bareli, Indira Gandhi’s constituency and now Sonia’s.
On her March 5 visit there, Jaya said things that might not have made the denizen of 10 Janpath happy. She said: “The complaint has come from (the) Congress party…. It’s a shame people like us are not allowed to sit in Parliament.”
Jaya added that she wasn’t the only MP holding an office of profit — Sonia did, too.
Obviously, the Samajwadi Party, with whose leaders Sonia does not have a pleasant relationship, wanted to strike out at her. Jaya possibly went along thinking she was on firm ground as Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s daughter-in-law and Amitabh’s wife.
As he advises Jaya not to contest for the Rajya Sabha again, Amitabh would have in mind the recent decision of friend Anil Ambani who resigned his membership in the aftermath of the office-of-profit controversy.
While Ambani said he wished to “uphold morality and transparency in public life”, some observers linked the decision also to a possible effort to distance himself from the Samajwadi Party, whose leader Amar Singh is at the centre of a phone-tap scandal. It is not known if some such consideration is also guiding the Bachchans.
Like Ajitabh’s daughter Namrata, Amitabh’s son Abhishek is keen on first uniting the Bachchans and then restoring some sort of functional ties with the Nehru-Gandhis.
According to the buzz in art circles, Namrata is organising an art event for charity in which Abhishek has agreed to be the guest of honour.
If things go according to plan, some day Abhishek might be seen hugging Rahul Gandhi. It may take time, but don’t rule it out.
