He's got the look: Abhishek Bachchan in a still from Umrao Jaan

Sexy sexy sexy, log bole

However, Abhishek Bachchan, aka ‘Asia’s sexiest man’, denies offering to drop his pants for immigration officers in London

Subhash K Jha

Abhishek Bachchan is alarmed by reports stating that he asked the immigration officer in London whether he should “drop his pants” during their customary investigation.

“I was aghast when I saw myself quoted using those cheap words, all over the Internet. Firstly, I don’t speak like that. Secondly, I’d never be rude to officials who are merely doing their job. It’s not their intention to harass you. Considering what the world situation is, we must all co-operate and be patient,” he says.

Meanwhile, Abhishek refuses to be flattered by being chosen Asia’s ‘sexiest man’ by a magazine. “I don’t even know what sexy means. These are appellations that are not to be taken seriously,” says Abhishek, talking from Paris where he’s shooting for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom now. “But yes, I’m humbled by it because I’ve never thought of myself as being sexy. If people have voted for me, then I respect that. But I’m certainly not going to suddenly acquire an extra swagger just because I’ve been called sexy. From where I come, I’ve seen both the highs and the lows. It’s all temporary and the trick of survival is not to take the trappings seriously. There’s no guarantee for a tomorrow in show business. Admitted my dad has proved to be a survivor. But they don’t make his kind of entertainers every day.”

Abhishek plans to return to Mumbai just for a day, on his father’s birthday, October 11. Although no celebrations are on the cards this year, Abhishek makes it a point to be with his dad every year on his birthday…

Actually, this year, he’s looking forward to it more since he has been overcome by a bout of homesickness. Having completed a chunk of the shooting for Shaad Ali’s Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom in London he has now moved with the unit to Paris.

“I miss home, especially since my grandmother is in the hospital. Also the release of the Umrao Jaan’s music soundtrack was on Saturday… a big moment for all of us who have been working on this project. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible for the music company to hold over the release until my return. Nor was it practical for me to fly back to Mumbai for a day. So I just had to miss the occasion,” he says.

Rani refused to work with Abhishek?

Rani Mukherji refused to work with Abhishek. If the rumormongers to be believed, Rani has turned down director Goldie Behl's movie because of Junior B, who, as per reports, has been signed up for playing hero in the film.
Goldie, who had made ‘Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai' with Abhishek and Rani, was very optimistic about getting them together again in his next. As per source, Goldie isn't happy with Rani's pricey gesture. But as per industry grapevine, Rani apparently avoiding Abhishek after the media started linking up them.
When contacted, Rani however refused to react on that.

I always say that. Since they have such good imaginations, they should apply for the srciptwriters position in the industry. They'll do much better there I think.

Amitabh, Abhishek and a pink t-shirt

Amitabh & Abhishek Bachchan with Pallavi Pathak and her familyReader Pallavi Pathak likes the Bachchans.

In August, when she found out that Amitabh Bachchan was shooting for Balkrishnan's Cheeni Kum in London with Tabu, she took her family and rushed to the location -- it took some snooping to find out where they were shooting -- to nab herself a memorable picture.

Her hard work was rewarded, and how. Not just did Amitji smile and pose for a couple of photographs, but an unexpected visitor dropped by.

Abhishek Bachchan, also shooting in London for Siddharth Anand's Tara Rum Pum, dropped by to say hi to dad.

In the photographs, Pallavi, in her distinctive pink tee-shirt, is accompanied by her daughter and mother-in-law. Not to mention the Bachchans.

If you encounter/meet/see film or television personalities and photograph them, please scan the photographs and mail the pictures to us. We will feature the best images right here on Rediff Movies.

LONDON: Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan tops a list of 50 Sexiest Asian Men in a survey conducted by Eastern Eye, an Asian newspaper published in Britain.

Abhishek, who was on number three last year, was shocked to hear he had topped the ranking in Eastern Eye's Sexiest Asian Men of 2006.

"Oh God really? That's interesting. Shocking actually. Are people blind? But wow, I would like to thank everyone. I don't agree with them but it is sweet," said Abhishek in a press statement.

Indian actress Priyanka Chopra was voted Sexiest Asian Woman of 2006 in last week's edition of the Asian tabloid.

Actor John Abraham, who won the Eastern Eye's title last year, is at number two. British Asian boxer Amir Khan is at third place, making him the sexiest male of the community in 2006 - a stunning rise from 44th place last year that reflects his boxing achievements this year.

"I am regularly informed by our female readers and staff about how 'fit' Abhishek is. He should be overjoyed. At least he can now claim to have won an honour that his legendary father has not," said Hamant Verma, Editor of Eastern Eye.

Amitabh Bachchan was ranked at number 16. Other British Asians in the list include singer Jay Sean and actor Naveen Andrews.

The list was compiled by the staff at Eastern Eye, Britain's most popular Asian newspaper, and published in its Sep 22 edition.

"Abhishek was on top because of his appeal to the thinking woman. Having successfully stepped out of his father's shadows as an actor in his own right, he will surely build on that with roles in 'Umrao Jaan', 'Dhoom 2' and 'Guru' this year," said reporter Gouri Sharma, who compiled the list with colleague Anjali Mehta.

"No doubt his famous stubble will become fashionable with young Asian men across the country," added Gouri.

The top 10 sexiest Asian men are:

1 Abhishek Bachchan
2 John Abraham
3 Amir Khan
4 Hrithik Roshan/ Dino Morea
6 Yatin Sonic
7 Upen Patel
8 Arjun Rampal
9 Saif Ali Khan
10 Jay Sean

Abhishek Bachchan: Pop’s the word!

Actor Abhishek Bachchan was much credited for his role in KANK. And daddy Amitabh did more than just stand out in the crowd with his powerhouse performance. Playing on-screen father and son was a piece of cake for the magnificent duo. Abhi tells us, “Dad and I share the same rapport that one saw in KANK. He is not only my dad but also my best friend and we have some great times together. So what one saw on-screen is pretty much how it is off-screen as well.” Well, these ‘dudes’ definitely know how to rock a party, eh?

Umrao Jaan is not a remake but an adaptation

Isn’t Aishwarya Rai looking simply stunning in this still from JP Dutta’s magnanimous opus Umrao Jaan.

While the general notion is that JP Dutta’s film is remake of Muzzaffar Ali’s 1981 film by the same name starring Rekha, the fact is not entirely true. Rather than a remake, JP Dutta’s film is an adaptation.

Mirza Muhammad Hadi Ruswa had originally written the novel by the title of UMRA-O-JAAN-E-ADA in the 19th century. This novel is one of the foremost literatures in Urdu and was published in the year 1899 by Mahadeo Prasad, Publishers of Lucknow.

Ever since then the novel has a quality that has inspired many generations of film-makers to recreate the enigmatic character of Umrao Jaan. And interestingly neither Muzzaffar Ali’s nor JP Dutta’s version is the first cinematic adaptation of the classic literature. Other films already made on the novel include Zindagi Aur Toofan and Mehendi.

More interestingly even before these films, someone else had started making a film on this novel. And the person was none other than OP Dutta, father of JP Dutta. In the 50's, O.P.Dutta was the first person to start a film on Umrao Jaan starring the then popular actress Nimmi. Unfortunately that film could not be completed.

So in a way by making this film J P Dutta has lived his father's dream.

UMRAO JAAN costume proceeds to go to an NGO

Bollywood Trade News Network

Umrao JaanUMRAO JAAN starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai has been arousing a lot of curiosity ever since it went on floors. The promo is out and Aishwarya is already being compared to Rekha who starred in the original film. The promo shows Aishwarya, a courtesan clad in a golden embroidered outfit looking stunning as ever, lip-synching to 'salaam' mesmerizing all the nawabs around. Shabana Azmi plays Aishwarya's mother in the film.
The latest buzz is that director-producer J P Dutta intends to auction the costumes and the resultant proceeds would go to an NGO working for girl-children. The name of the charity organization would be disclosed at the music launch of the film on September 28. Reportedly the ethnic costumes cost an astronomical amount close to 80 million.

'Kabhi Alvida...' chosen for Tokyo film fest

Download Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna WallpapersKaran Johar's "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" has been selected for the 19th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) starting Oct 21.
The film will be shown under the Winds of Asia section and compete for the Best Asian Film award.
Earlier this month, the hit film with an ensemble cast of Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta was screened at the Toronto International Film festival in the Gala Presentation section.
Released last month, the film has received lukewarm response at home but is reaping rich dividends for Johar in the overseas market.
The nine-day Tokyo festival will kickstart with Hollywood filmmaker Clint Eastwood's "Flags of Our Fathers", a movie about the Battle at Iwo Jima during WWII. Japanese director Kon Ichikawa's "Murder of the Inugami Clan," based on author Seishi Yokomizo's masterpiece mystery novel, has been selected as the closing film.

Ramu will now make Abhi ‘shake’ Ash
Ram Gopal Varma has done it again. After getting the real life father and son duo play reel life father-son duo for the first time in his film Sarkar, he has decided to extend the family. He has cast none other than Aishwarya Rai opposite Abhishek Bachchan in Sarkar 2 which also stars Amitabh Bachchan.

The sequel will start filming in February 2007. This is one of the many films that Aishwarya has signed opposite her rumored boyfriend in many times. Ramu finds Aishwarya Rai perfect for the role. Well if rumors of the couple being an item are true then this will be only the second time when all three come together after they did an item song in Bunty Aur Babli.

All in the family? Well only time will tell.

The veil is off Umrao Jaan
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, September 19, 2006]

As 'Don' and 'Jaaneman' pump up the heat for the October 20th release, J.P. Dutta has also eventually released the teaser of his magnum opus 'Umrao Jaan'.
While the release date has been tentatively fixed as November 3rd [one is yet to hear an official word from Dutta himself], the promotion of the film has kicked off with a short half-minute teaser featuring Aishwarya Rai in complete getup of Umrao Jaan. Her looking like a million bucks may be stating the obvious but what also strikes is Abhishek Bachchan's getup that is projects him as a 'pathan'.
The song lip-synched by Aishwarya Rai is titled 'Salaam' which is sung by Alka Yagnik, composed by Anu Malik and written by Javed Akhtar. The first 30 seconds have been impressive. Let's see what the rest of the film has in the offering!

‘Umrao Jaan’, a costly costume drama!
by Debasis Jana

‘Umrao Jaan’, a costly costume drama!

J.P. Dutta's ‘Umrao Jaan' is this year's first costume drama to be released soon. In 1980, director Muzaffar Ali had made ‘Umrao Jaan' with Rekha playing the lead role and this is second time another film is being made in same name on 1904's great literary work ‘Umrao Jaan Ada'.
This time Aishwarya Rai is playing the lead role and Abhishek Bachchan playing her love interest.
The promos of the film already have been in the air, which shows Aishwarya, in scintillating golden embroidered outfits, dancing to melodious track ‘Salaam'.
As per reports the film has astronomical budget of costumes worth Rs. 80 million. In the film Aishwarya will be seen in all expensive ethnic outfits embroidered with ethnic jewelry. Besides Abhishek and Aishwarya, there will be Shabana Azmi, who will be seen as Aishwarya's mother in the film.

BigB knocks out Salman Khan, Abhishek, Shahrukh Khan and Hrithik move on.

In an interesting result, Salman Khan was knocked out by BigB in the quarter finals of the Most Popular Bollywood Star 2006 contest at desifans.com. King Khan Shahrukh Khan sailed through to the mens semi finals by beating Bollywood’s Hottest actor John Abraham. But the easiest win was for Abhishek Bachchan who won around 75% of the popular votes while Shahid could get around 25% !! More than 40,000 votes decided the winners !!

Salman Khan who had topped the nomination round got knocked out by BigB in an absolute reversal of the 2005 contest where Salman Khan had beaten out Amitabh Bachchan. Salman fans believe that it was the people who do not like Salman and fans of other stars ( Shahrukh, Aishwarya, etc) who joined hands and voted for the BigB which turned the results away from Salman. Maroof, a Salman Khan fan is not happy with the results “brad pit ko bhi uske sath khada kar doge to vo bhi salman se zyada acha nai lagega”. BigB beat Salman by a 54% : 46 % margin.
But Amitabh has his fans and as rightly put by Dina “Salman Khan is a great actor but Amitabh Bachchan is the best of the best!!! ” Amitabh meets his son Abhishek Bachchan in the semis and this is a tough decision for lot of the Bachchan fans. “How can u choose between a father and a son.. come on yaar they should meet in final not in semi final.” protests Shubash
Hrithik Roshan with his super powers from Krrish eliminated Aamir Khan by a comfortable 58% - 42% margin. Shraddha Koli a die-hard fan of Hrithik has this to say “He is hot, sexy, cool, smart, heartthrob, lives in hearts of his fans…..he rocks man…does not need any explanation….He is my life and i can do anything to meet him”. Hrithik Roshan meets Shahrukh Khan in the semis. Shahrukh won the mens contest in 2005 but will get a tough fight from Hrithik. John Abraham has a good fan following but as Farhan Khan puts it “john is also a best but in comparison to srk he is very small in the industry”. SRK won 59% while John got around 41% votes.
The semi finals of the Most Popular Bollywood Star 2006 are on at : Most Popular Bollywood Star 2006.

Abhishek Bachchan's new love is his six-month-old Alsatian. He's so besotted with the four-legged canine, he even took him along to the KANK set when he was shooting for the item number with his dad.
Interesting aside: What's with Ash and her penchant for dog lovers? Salman Khan has My Son and Jaan, Viveik gifted her Sunshine. And now Abhishek. Woof, yeh mohabbat.

Confirmed - Umrao Jaan gets postponed
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, September 16, 2006]

'Aaj nahi to kal yeh to hona hi tha'
The way 'Don - The Chase Begins Again' and 'Jaan-E-Mann' were being promoted for last 3-4 weeks, it was quite obvious that J.P. Dutta's 'Umrao Jaan' had no other option but to get pushed for a later date. After all both the aforementioned films have plans to come up with 500+ prints in India alone which leaves little breathing space for other flicks to arrive.
While Dutta denied any plans of moving the film ahead till a few days back, it has now been confirmed that it would be releasing on November 3rd. Though in a way it is good that the film avoided the clash, one also needs to observe that just 3 weeks down the line i.e. on November 24th comes 'Dhoom 2' which is already the hottest film in the trade circles for the remainder of the year.
Also, one may count Sooraj Barjatya's 'Vivah' and Subhash Ghai's 'Apna Sapna Money Money' as decent competition when they arrive on November 10th.
The game is not yet over in Bollywood this winter!

Ash’s ‘Salaam’ This Sunday
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, September 16, 2006]

Ash may be looking hot in the promos of ‘Dhoom 2’ but the film that she is banking on in a big way is J P Dutta’s ‘Umrao Jaan’ an adaptation of the famous Urdu Novel by Rusva. Obviously the comparisons with Rekha will be there for she has already immortalized Umrao in Muzaffar Ali’s Magnum Opus. And the first biggest test is this Sunday when the first song ‘Salaam’ from the music album of new ‘Umrao Jaan’ will start airing on the small screen.
It has been confirmed that ‘Umrao Jaan’ is all set to release on November 13th and it shall be avoiding the collision course with ‘Don’ and ‘Jaanemann’. Khayyam’s music in the first version is the stuff of classics. It remains to be seen how good Anu Malik’s score is. What’s your take….Who makes a better Umrao….Ash or Rekha? Do send in your feedback to us….

The All New Umrao Jaan
Any remake, be it film or music, faces the obvious challenge -- that of being compared to the original. Filmmaker J P Dutta has no such fear, which is why he has decided to remake the 1981 Muzaffar Ali classic Umrao Jaan.
rediff.com compares the original roles with the new actors in Dutta's remake.

Umrao Jaan: From Rekha to Aishwarya Rai
Aishwarya Rai steps into Rekha's shoes to play Amiran aka Umrao Jaan. It seems a tough task, no doubt, for the former Miss World.
Rekha's performance in the film not only won her a National Award but also fetched her wide critical acclaim. While viewing the film, one fails to dissociate actress Rekha from Amiran.
Will Ash do Umrao justice? Only time will tell.
Nawab Sultan: From Farooq Shaikh to Abhishek Bachchan
Abhishek may be the toast of Bollywood today, but will he be able to do what Farooq Shaikh did so subtly?
Farooq was the epitome of elegance and romanticism, and the role is still etched in audience's minds.
Of late, Abhishek has made his presence felt in the industry. His films like Dhoom, Bunty Aur Babli and Sarkar are hits, and he even won critical acclaim for his role in Yuva.

Khanum Jaan: From Shaukat Kaifi to Shabana Azmi
While acting, Shaukat Kaifi may have forgotten her real identity, so wonderful was her depiction of Umrao Jaan's mother Khanum Jaan. Her depiction of pain, suffering and dilemma wrenched many hearts.
There could not have been a better choice than Shabana replacing her mother in the new version. Bollywood has few actresses of her calibre. In an interview to rediff.com, Shabana refuted recent reports of having told J P Dutta 'no one can play my mother's role other than me.'
She insisted Rekha had called her to say she should play the part of Khanam.

Gohar Mirza: From Naseeruddin Shah to Arshad Warsi
Seems like a good choice. Of late, Warsi has had a number of tricks up his sleeve. People were floored by his performance in Raju Hirani's Munnabhai MBBS and the low-keyed Sehar.
We have yet to see him play a negative role yet though. And it would be nice to see him equal Naseer's evil act.

Pritam Chakraborty tries to whip up another Dhoom
The Dhoom machale composer is in a fix. "How am I going to create another song which is that successful? I'm in a fix! You can't design a hit like Dhoom machale. When we were working on that song we hardly thought it would become such a craze. Now for Dhoom 2 I've already done three songs. Any of them could be THE chartbuster. Who knows?"

Shy yet exuberant Pritam's career is at a cross-road. "Though I've done a lot of soft melodies my career has become synonymous with Dhoom. I needed to go beyond, and that's the chance I've got in Meghna Gulzar's Baat Pakki. When Pritish Nandy Communications with whom I've done Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena was unsure of whether I could do a subject that didn't seem like my forte, I said let me try. And here I am, working with Gulzar saab so early in my career. It's a dream come true! I grew up listening to his songs with R.D. Burman. In college I was a member of the R.D. Burman fan club and that's where I became a fan of Gulzar saab. I dreamt of working with him one day. I didn't know it would happen so early in my career."

Working with Meghna Gulzar is challenging and fun for Pritam. "She has written a really amusing script and the song situations are unlike anything we've seen or heard before."

Pritam burst into tears when he heard one of Gulzar saab's love lyrics. "I don't know what happened to me. A flood memories came to when I heard Gulzar saab's words. I just couldn't stop myself."

Pritam is arguably the youngest music director in Bollywod today. And Gulzar is the undoubtedly the most experienced poet writing lyrics for our films.

Gulzar saab is all praise for Pritam. "It's virtually like a honeymoon for me. When Meghna told me that I'll be writing lyrics for Pritam I didn't know who he was. I hadn't heard his Dhoom. But I trust my daughter's judgment implicitly. So I happily met this young man. And he turned out to be a very interesting character.'

Says Gulzar saab, "You can't see eye to eye with Pritam while working for the simple reason that he wears his hair all over his face, like a sehra. His eyes are just not visible from underneath all that hair. I'm surprised by Pritam's talent. Bosky had asked me to write songs that are tongue-in-cheek. That's exactly what I'm doing."

The poet-lyricist says he has never had so much fun before. "I like writing tongue in cheek lyrics like Kaisi kaisi ram milaye jodi. That could be song describing my collaboration with Pritam."
