Bollywood flicks to watch out for in 2007
01st Jan 2007  14.00 IST
By Agencies

It rained hits like Rang De Basanti , Krrish and Dhoom 2 in 2006, and the coming year holds as much promise, if not more, with a slew of interesting movies lined up for release.

2006 has been the best year that Bollywood has had in a long time. With more than 20 hits and even non-performers breaking even financially, Bollywood trade boomed.
But will it be able to meet heightened audience expectations in the year ahead? Will it be able to keep the momentum going?

On the face of it, 2007 has an interesting and varied menu on offer.

Kick starting the year is Mani Ratnam 's Guru . The
film stars Abhishek Bachchan and the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai , who have been the media darlings ever since rumours of their impending marriage surfaced.

‘Guru’ portrays the protagonist as a person who amasses wealth through dubious means.

The media attention surrounding ‘Guru’ is clearly tremendous and the film is likely to set the cash registers ringing from the first month of 2007 itself.

Before the month-end, director Nikhil Advani 's Salaam-e-Ishq , which is a big budget, mega star cast ode to love, will hit the marquees.

The film features six couples and traces their lives: Salman Khan opposite Priyanka Chopra , Anil Kapoor with Juhi Chawla , John Abraham with Vidya Balan , Akshaye Khanna opposite Ayesha Takia , Sohail Khan and Isha Koppikar and Govinda , romancing foreigner Shannon Esrechowitz .

A few more producers have finalised the release dates of their films in 2007.

Some of the other biggies to watch out for include Yashraj Films ' (YRF) Tara Rum Pum starring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee and directed by Siddharth Anand of Salaam Namaste fame.

YRF, in fact, is planning to release at least six to seven films next year. Besides ‘Tara Rum Pum’, there will be Jhoom Barabar Jhoom , Chak De India and Chudiyan (working title).

Madhuri Dixit 's comeback movie is also likely to be ready in 2007. News reports say YRF plans to start work on another two movies, also to be released next year.

While ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’ is a Shaad Ali film starring mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan , Abhishek Bachchan , Preity Zinta , Bobby Deol and Lara Dutta , ‘Chak De India’ will feature superstar Shah Rukh Khan in a never before seen avatar of a coach of girls hockey team. YRF have given the responsibility of the film to Shimit Amin of the Ab Tak Chhappan fame.

Yet another film from that same stable that will keep the newswires buzzing will be Pradeep Sarkar 's tentatively ‘Chudiyan’. The film reportedly brings together Jaya Bachchan , Abhishek, Rani, Konkona Sen Sharma , Anupam Kher and Kunal Kapoor .

Besides YRF, well-known financer Firoz Nadiadwala will back director Ahmed Khan in Fool And Final that stars Sunny Deol , Shahid Kapur , Sunil Shetty , Jackie Shroff , Javed Jaffrey , Paresh Rawal , Om Puri , Rajpal Yadav , Vijay Raaz , Razzak Khan, Vivek Oberoi , Bipasha Basu , Arbaaz Khan , Ayesha, Sameera Reddy and Zakir Hussain.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra will return with another magnum opus Eklavya . The promos of the film have been running in theatre halls for a while now and have everyone excited.

Big B essays the title role and is supported by Sanjay Dutt , Jackie, Saif, Vidya, Sharmila Tagore , Boman Irani , Jimmy Shergill and Raima Sen .

Director Anurag Basu will tell a tale about Metro along with actors Shiney Ahuja , Shilpa Shetty , Kay Kay Menon , Sharman Joshi , Konkona, Kangana Ranaut and Irrfan Khan in a film produced by UTV.

UTV is also backing Hat Trick by Milan Luthria and will release Mira Nair 's The Namesake . The later promises to be treat for movie connoisseurs.

Another small budget but eagerly awaited film will be director Vishal Bharadwaj 's ‘Blue Umbrella’ with Pankaj Kapur and Shreya Sharma in the lead roles. The film's promos are already out and garnering interest.

Politically charged director Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday may also finally see the light of the day in the year ahead.

Among the other biggies will be Sanjay Leela Bhansali 's ‘Saawariya’, a launch pad of Rishi Kapoor 's son Ranbir and Anil Kapoor 's daughter Sonam. Apart from that the celebrated director has roped in Rani and Salman for the film, which is being backed by Sony.

If the lip-lock between Hrithik Roshan and Ash in ‘Dhoom 2’ left audience wanting for more, then the film to watch out for will be Ashutosh Gowarikar 's historical Jodha Akbar .

Dutt will return to the silver screen in ‘Mr. Fraud’ next year, which is directed by Abbas-Mustan . The film also stars Ajay Devgan , Bipasha, Tanushree Dutta , Anuj Sawhney and Satish Shah .

The platter already seems overloaded. And as far as what will work and what will not one only needs to look at the trend this year.

Be it a big budget movie, a multi-starrer, a big banner or a small time production house - almost every good movie managed to mint money in 2006.

In 2007 the hottest contested territory will be overseas and everyone will be in for better quality productions. And last but not the least, anything entertaining will be a winner.

Bappida wins Rahman over Abhishek

Here is a trivia on the music of ‘Guru’ that is not known. While A R Rahman was working on the music of ‘Guru’ he was keen to use the voice of Abhishek Bachchan in one of the compositions ‘Ek Lo Ek Muft’. But the actor missed out on the opportunity owing to his busy schedule. So this refrained the ace musician and the heartthrob of Bollywood Abhishek Bachchan from working together. Rahman then considered hearing Bappi Lahiri. In his true-blue style Bappida made the impact and recorded the song in two hours flat. In any way the song was not at all a bad bargain for Rahman, what say?

Mani Ratnam's first interview on Guru
Though the film has some uncanny resemblances to the life of the industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani, Mani insists the plot in his latest film Guru is rooted to a cinematic reality. "Hopefully it'll have some connect with real life," he says amidst hectic sessions of background music with A.R Rahman.

Why did Mani cast Abhishek in a role that required a huge historical and chronological journey? Mani can't seem to get enough of his Yuva lead. "Abhishek was the first choice for Guru and I am very happy about his work. I think he is growing remarkably as an actor. If you shift me back to the start and ask me who you will cast as Guru I will go back to Abhishek."

This is also the second time that Mani has worked with Aishwarya Rai. "I was quite happy with what Ash did in Irruvar. I thought she was quite remarkable, given that it was her first film and in a language (Tamil) that she did not know. In Guru she was speaking Hindi, so it must have been much easier on her. She has done the role with a lot of dignity and poise. She remained very close to the character and has done it with ease. In a film that is based on Guru she stands tall and strong."

Mani has finished the film in record time. Why the rush? Is it because he needed to get into your Aamir-Kareena starrer Lajjo right away? "No rush at all! I'm just doing work that I am paid to do. It was planned as a single-schedule film and we finished our major work by June-end. Aamir-Kareena film has now been rescheduled to the second half of 2007."

Looking back, does Mani see Yuva as an experience that didn't connect as much with the audience as you hoped it would? He refuses to find excuses for the film's failure? "There is always room to try something new. Be it in content or form or look. And when you do try something new there is always a chance that that it may not connect fully with the audience. That is a risk that a filmmaker has to take. If you take the credit when it works you have to take the blame when a film does not. But that should not stop you from growing and take a few more steps ahead. That's where Guru has taken me."

Roger Nair Prod bags Guru Canada rights
By Johnny Vaz
19 December 2006, 07:46 PM

MUMBAI: Roger Nair Productions has acquired the Canadian rights of writer-director Mani Ratnam's Guru from Bobby Bedi's Kaleidoscope Entertainment, which owns the overseas rights of the film.

Guru stars Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, R Madhavan and Vidya Balan in the lead roles. Music for the film has been composed by A R Rahman.

A star studded world premiere will be held in Toronto, Canada on 11 January, 2007 at the Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre Centre, where many Hollywood movies are premiered. Most of the cast and crew of Guru are expected to attend the premiere.

"This will be a pathbreaking and landmark deal between Canada and India, making Canada an official territory for Bollywood films. Roger Nair Productions and its directors Roger Nair (its Toronto based CEO) and Padamm Kumar (the India based COO) have entered the distribution market in a big way for the Canada territory and will be buying films for North America and Europe as well. Roger Nair Productions is also in negotiations with other top Hindi filmmakers for acquiring rights to their films," says Roger Nair Productions spokesperson Meenakshi Kumar.

Historically, the Indian film industry has always looked upon North America as one combined territory. The lobbying by Canadian companies for video and television rights have thus far been futile, forcing them to get only exhibition rights, which did not help in fighting video piracy in the lucrative Canadian market.

Roger Nair Productions, a Canadian company has now acquired absolute theatrical, video and TV rights, ensuring legal rights to curb piracy with the help of the police and the judicial system.

Guru will open in the Canada wide Cineplex, AMC and Empire theatres on 12 January 2007.

Big fat Bollywood wedding

According to sources, the Aishwarya-Abhishek wedding/reception has been fixed for February 19 and the Hyatt, Santacruz, has been booked as the venue.

The invites have yet to go out but the buzz in Bollywood is that the who's who of tinsel town has ear-marked February 19, 2007 in their black books.

According to sources who do not wish to be identified fearing social ostracisation by the Bachchans, the Aishwarya-Abhishek wedding/reception has been fixed for February 19 and the Hyatt, Santacruz, has been booked as the venue.

While the Bachchans were not available for comment, Aishwarya's business manager, Hari Singh, refused to either confirm or deny the date. Sources reveal that following a year of courtship, Abhishek and Aishwarya confirmed their marriage plans at a party recently thrown by Aditya Chopra to celebrate the success of Dhoom 2. "They publicly announced at the party that they were going to get married and in fact, this surprise announcement called for a greater celebration. Promptly cake and champagne were called for," adds the source.

The source says that the media is likely to be kept out of the February 19 affair. While longtime favourite, Neeta Lulla, has been asked to create Ash's outfit or the evening, Aby's baby is likely to go for a sherwani designed by Anna Singh. According to numerologist, Sanjay Jumaani, Abhishek completes 31 years on February 5. "His 32nd year is very auspicious for marriage," he adds.

The rumours of Ash-Abhishek marriage gained momentum after she recently accompanied the Bachchans for a hawan at Varanasi and the two are making public appearances together along with the family, as was recently the case at the premiere of Baabul. Abhishek also met Aishwarya in Paris recently when she was there to shoot an ad for a cosmetic brand. "They are very clearly ready for marriage. I have seen Ash serving food at Jalsa. She is very close to the Bachchans and they are definitely getting married," says an actor who again spoke to us off-the-record.

Abhishek Bachchan would like to do a lot more
Indo-Asian News Service
Mumbai, December 13, 2006
Abishek Bachchan's popularity is soaring with each release but the actor is unaffected because he says he would rather be known as a good actor like his father.
“I want to be known as a good actor. Because once you’re a capable actor, stardom happens automatically. Isn’t that what happened in my dad’s case?” he quipped.
Abhishek found his dad’s role as Sexy Sam in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna to be awesome.
"I don’t think anybody but dad could’ve done it. I think it was the toughest role of KANK. To handle a role that can be tagged risqué with such dignity and grace and to pull it off with such emotional resonance, is very commendable,” Abhishek said.
Abhishek and his father have played father and son in two films.
“Yes, Ramu’s Sarkar and now KANK. I’d say our relationship in real life is very similar to how we are in KANK. Karan has known me from when I was a child. He has spent loads of time with dad and me. He has observed us and incorporated a lot of the traits from my bonding with dad in our on-screen interaction in KANK. But no, I don’t call dad ‘dude’ in real life. That’s Karan’s innovation.”
Abhishek doesn’t feel Sexy Sam’s role went too far.
“It’s a character he’s playing, we must remember that. Unfortunately, when it comes to dad, people tend to forget the man on the screen isn’t Amitabh Bachchan but a character. It’s hard to put aside his real-life persona even when gets completely into character as Sam.
“What I loved about the relationship between Sam and Rishi was the role reversal. It’s the dad who seems to be the womaniser. And the son isn’t angry or upset about it because the father has always been very open about his feelings,” he says. “And my dad’s character redeems himself in the sequence when he confesses his loneliness at the party. Such moments come so naturally to dad. I want to get there one day.”
Abhishek is gearing up for his next release Guru. According to Vidya Balan, Mani Ratnam’s Guru is Abhishek’s show all the way.
“Did Vidya really say that? So sweet of her! Any actor getting to work with Mani is lucky. I’ve worked with him twice and I feel twice lucky. He’s a sheer pleasure to work with”, he quipped.
Even as the praises for his performance in KANK reached a crescendo, Abhishek was seen letting his hair down in the recently released Dhoom 2.
“It’s the same genre as the first Dhoom  flick. I’d like to believe that we’ve managed to make it bigger and better. Dhoom 2 and Umrao Jaan are my two back-to-back releases. The two are worlds and cultures apart.”
Abhishek has just shot for Shaad Ali’s Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom with Preity Zinta and Lara Dutta.
"It’s great fun. I’m absolutely relaxed as long as I get to work with friends. It’s very important for me to work in a comfortable atmosphere. Fortunately, I’ve worked mostly with friends so far. Or directors who’ve become friends in the course of a film being made. That explains why I’m doing Shaad’s next and Goldie Behl’s second Drona.”
Abhishek hasn’t signed any new films.
“No one wants to sign me on, what to do,” he mock-sighs, and then gets serious. “No matter what you say about my career, I’m not satisfied. When I look around I feel there’s so much good work being done and how little I’ve achieved. I’d like to do a lot more work. I see the kind of work my dad is doing at his age. I only hope and pray I’m able to do that calibre and quantity of work when I reach dad’s age.”

Abhishek Bachchan seems to be globetrotting these days.
After we spotted him at the Paris airport with Aishwarya Rai and her mother Vrinda Rai, the actor zipped over to Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, to shoot for his new film, Drona.
Looking at his jacket, one wonders whether he's been taking tips from his dad.

Drona will be the first Hindi film to feature Abhishek alongside his mother Jaya Bachchan on-screen.
The film is directed by one of Abhishek's childhood friends, Goldie Behl. Behl, who is married to Sonali Bendre, made his directorial debut with Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai, starring Abhishek.
Drona also stars Priyanka Chopra.

Inset: Abhishek poses with reader Parul Shah's aunt Vandana, uncle Vijay Singh, and their daughter Isha.

Abhishek does a Rang barse

The actor apparently did an entire antara of the song in one take along with his co-star Aishwarya Rai.

Audiences will be reminded of Amitabh Bachchan's bhang songs when they watch his son, Abhishek Bachchan do a bhang number in his forthcoming film Guru. The actor apparently did an entire antara of the song in one take along with his co-star Aishwarya Rai.

Song choreographer Brinda said, "Although the brief given to us was that audiences should not be reminded of Amitabh Bachchan, the junior Bachchan is so much like the senior that it is hard not to find similarities between his style and that of his father."

The location chosen for the song was in Badami, Karnataka, and involved climbing up to Tirupathi and then returning, "None of the stars complained," said Brinda,"The climb did not affect their energy to perform."

Bollywood can survive beyond the Khans

By Priyanka Khanna, IANS

Download Dhoom 2 WallpapersAfter decades of domination by the three Khans (Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman), 2006 witnessed the establishment of a second generation of superstars who are set to takeover the baton.
Hrithik Roshan has clearly emerged as the next big bet in Bollywood. With two blockbusters - KRRISH and DHOOM 2 - within one year under his belt, the light-eyed hunk is being compared to Hollywood sensations Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.
Hrithik's superhuman act in KRRISH has been touted as better than Hollywood's super heroes. And in DHOOM 2, he has given a blockbuster not produced by his father.
The film has also put the stamp of successive successes on Abhishek Bachchan, whose fortunes had turned for the better with BUNTY AUR BABLI and has been shinning since then.
Abhishek's upcoming single-hero project GURU is likely to consolidate his position as a performer-cum-star. One look at the reining films on the marquees and it seems that John Abraham is set to occupy top rankings in the tally of leading Bollywood actors in the New Year. Given that, he has no family ties with the industry, this is no easy feat.
Download Kabul Express WallpapersJohn is featuring in two films on the marquees at the moment and both are as different as chalk and cheese. While one is BAABUL, a true-blue Bollywood multi-starrer about widow remarriage, the other is a rare travelogue into war-torn Afghanistan titled KABUL EXPRESS.
John is comfortable rubbing shoulders with mega stars like Salman, Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee as well as talented character actors like Arshad Warsi and Nana Patekar.
Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman have also had their share of success this year. But the norm that films featuring the Khans will be the biggest grosser of the year has been broken.
Box-office wise, Shah Rukh and Salman have not performed exceptionally this year. "DON - The Chase Begins" was Shah Rukh's calling card this year but it did not outshine all others. Salman's JAAN-E-MANN fell short of the competition.
Although Salman's BAABUL may still be a hit as it is a family oriented drama and such flicks usually take time to grow on audiences. The actor has, however, lost some of his box office draw this year.
Download Don WallpapersAamir with his policy of one project at a time will continue to be a chief attraction in the year ahead but for film trade investors investing in him is no longer a guarantee to success.
And now that Shah Rukh has signed on to do STAR's "Kaun Banega Crorepati", he will have less time for films.
Thankfully for Bollywood, a new set of stars is waiting in the wings.

Ash-Abhi Shaadi? Nah…Not Again…
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Monday, December 18, 2006]

A Mumbai tabloid yesterday published a hush hush news report that the elusive couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai will be tying the knot (finally) on February 19th, 2007. And the big reception will be held at Hotel Grand Hyatt in Mumbai. Obviously the media as expected will be kept out of it. Now, don’t you think this Ash-Abhi shaadi business has become a bit too boring for comfort?
In the past few months everything that the couple has been doing is being talked about. Ashi-Hrithik kiss controversy spread like a dhoom fire, Abhishek’s lackluster bloated look in ‘Dhoom 2’ came in for strict criticism, Ashwarya’s Enforcement Directorate troubles surrounding the ‘Cash’ problems (gifts and hawala), the miserable failure of the ‘Umrao Jaan’ chemistry, Abhishek winning a high honour in Uttar Pradesh reserved for senior poets and writers, a fluff magazine solemnizing the Ash-Abhi marriage in a Madurai temple, the not-so-secret-post-midnight pooja performed by Ashwarya along with Bachchan in Varanasi….Life’s been one controversial ride for the couple. And the best part is that the duo has been fuelling speculations through their actions and then go around saying that there’s nothing in their relationship.
One never knows, but even this February 19th marriage date is another publicity stunt to boost their next film ‘Guru’ which has been receiving thanda vibes so far. Right before the release of ‘Umrao Jaan’ (another film starring the couple) there were reports from the so called ‘reliable’ sources that Ash will be making the announcement on her birthday November 1st. As expected no announcements were made and ‘Umrao Jaan’ ended up as a colossal flop of the year. Hopefully ‘Guru’ will receive a better response for it is the creation of a genius and must be a better watch.
As for the Ashi-Abhi marriage rumours, Bachchans should come out clean. For somehow, their reputation is suffering because of this never ending drama…And then they blame the media…How ironical!

Mallika Sherawat in an item number in ‘Guru’
After a long media hiatus, Malika Sherawat is back to claim the sexy siren title, swaying her hips to an Arabic tune.

'Maya Maya,' an item number from the film Guru has put the spotlight back on our desi sex kitten. So while Miss Sherawat is gyrating away, it's Bachchan Junior who seems more than happy to play spectator. The song which has been shot in Turkey has quite an interesting story behind it.

"When I was returning from Haj, one guy had water on his cart and was saying 'maya-maya-maya'. I later learnt that it was an Arabic word for water. I thought it was an interesting sound and sounds very Indian too. And since Mani wanted an Arabic song, why not use the words," reveals A R Rahman, Music Composer.

So while this item number is creating quite a few waves, the other songs of Guru are also hitting the right notes.

"What I really like about Guru is that there's no one song which will stand on its own and make it a favourite. The entire soundtrack is exactly that - it's a soundtrack and it supports and compliments the film brilliantly," says Abhishek Bachchan.

Well the mix seems to be rather interesting if there is an out-and-out commercial item number. Then there also is a very unusual song sung by Bappi Lahiri.

What one needs to watch out for is the potent combination of director Mani Ratnam and A R Rahman especially after they have delivered hits with chart-busting music like Yuva, Roja, Dil Se and Bombay.

Suniel is joining hands with Shobha and Ekta Kapoor's Balaji
Telefilms to produce a film based on bike and car racing. The film
has been titled `Raaste' and will star Abhishek Bachchan, John
Abraham, Sikander Kher and Aishwarya Rai.

John will once again be seen in his cool biker dude look and is
extremely excited about doing the film. Ash and Abhi have once again
been cast together in this film. The film will be directed by Farhan
Akhtar's assistant Vicky Singh.

"John plays a biker, Abhishek is a racer and Sikander also has an
interesting part to play," says the director.

Talking about the film, John Abraham says, "It feels really good
that I will again be seen on the bike in Raaste. I always thought
that if I have to be seen with my bike once again in any film, it
has to be something special and that's when this script came along.
I am looking forward to do the film."

The look for John and all the other actors still has to be worked
on. According to some sources the film's storyline revolves around
three friends who turn foes because of one woman.

Says Sikandar, "I suppose Raaste will be one of those flicks that
hasn't been done before in Hindi. I'm very excited to be part of it.
I'm getting to work with Abhishek whom I've known from childhood.
He's like the elder brother I never had . And John is also someone I
know very well. So we guys are going to bond big-time."

Salman-Amitabh together again in Ravi Chopra's film?
by Debasis Jana

In just released `Baabul', they have been seen as father and son and
as per source, director Ravi Chopra is contemplating to make yet
another film with Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan as father and son
again.
In `Baghban' also Big B played Salman's on-screen father. `Baghban'
was a huge hit. And in `Baabul' also, people appreciated Amitabh-
Salman chemistry as father and son.
When asked, director Ravi Chopra however didn't deny the news. He
said, "Yes, we are presently working on the script. The story is
about a father and his two sons. And Amitji will play the father.
I'm talking with Salman about playing one of the sons."
If the source to be believed, Abhishek Bachchan has been approached
for playing another son. However, Ravi Chopra refused to commend on
that. The yet-to-title film will have two leading gals, however has
not finalized yet.
