With a stellar cast of Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Bobby Deol, Lara Dutta, and Amitabh Bachchan in a special appearance, and the established credentials of the young director, 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' looks set to repeat the nationwide success of 'Bunty Aur Babli'. June 15 is the day to ' Jhoom Barabar Jhoom '.

The festive season will be celebrated in style by Yash Raj Films with the release of Pradeep Sarkar ?s film ' Laaga Chunari Mein Daag ' being unveiled on the 12th of October. Aishwarya Rai No More
By Krishna Jewel, AllBollywood. com Staff
Ever since Aishwarya Rai married Abhishek Bachchan last weekend, all
have pondered and speculated what surname she would choose to use.

Well, wonder no more...reports are that Ash has decided.

The newest member of the Bachchan household will take her new
husband's name - becoming Aishwarya Bachchan, said her father-in-
law, Amitabh Bachchan.

As a matter of fact, Ash has already signed an autograph as
Aishwarya Bachchan, Big B said in an interview to a daily published
on Thursday.

"She desires to use Bachchan as her surname," Bachchan said.

Bachchan also stated that the new couple would move in with him and
his wife rather than a home of their own.

"This decision came voluntarily from Abhishek and Aishwarya,"
Bachchan said.

As for his daughter-in- law's film career, Bachchan expressed that he
hopes she'll continue acting.

"Jaya and I have insisted that Aishwarya must continue with her
acting career," Bachchan said. "There is no problem or issue with
us."

Bachchan also denied reports that photos or film footage of the
wedding have been sold to anyone.

"No such offer has come and even if it did, we would reject it,"
Bachchan said.

MIRROR EXCLUSIVE

AB shuts up shaadi critics

(And reveals how Salman called him to wish Abhi-Ash)

Back to Section Stories Posted On Thursday, April 26, 2007

Malay Desai

Big B, in an exclusive interview after the Abhi-Ash wedding, finally reveals why some people did not make it to the coveted guest list

How does it feel to have Aishwarya in the house?
It's wonderful! I'm sure there'll be even more happiness in the house because of her.

Will Aishwarya assume the Bachchan name on the passport, would you like a working bahu?
I've no problem with whatever name she uses. As far as her continuing to work is concerned, Jaya and I have no problem with it. It's for Aishwarya and Abhishek to decide.

Were you happy with the wedding?
Yes, by the grace of God everything went off well. We're happy that the union has taken place. There were some truly heartwarming moments during the wedding and I'd like to believe they were moments that will remain with us for the rest of our lives.

There were many people who felt hurt because they couldn't come to the wedding.
Let me put my situation before you, and leave it to you and the world in general to judge and sentence us. We were dealing with a marriage and a guest list that was going out from seven important personalities and celebrities like my father Dr Harivanshrai Bachchan, a literary giant who has his own admirers in the literary world, my mother Teji Bachchan who has relatives, friends and associates going back to 90 years. There was Jaya, a personality in her own right with a large circle of relatives and friends, there were Abhishek and Aishwarya and there was Amar Singhji. And then finally there was yours truly… we were the hosts of the wedding. Please tell me, how do we even begin to invite all the people who are associated with these seven people?

What would the numbers have come to?
If we invited all the friends of all the hosts, the guest list would have run into 20,000 people.  Where would we have accommodated so many people? In our home or in a hotel? No hotel in India could accommodate 20,000 people. In any case, the family decided that an event like our children's wedding couldn't be held in a hotel. It would be too impersonal a venue. So should we have had the wedding at the Bandra Kurla   Complex like the Filmfare awards night? We needed two acres of land for such a guest list. Where do we provide air conditioning to so many people in this heat? How would I've accommodated and fed 20,000 people? I'd rather give that kind of money to charity.

The good life: Ash-Abhishek flew to Tirupati, the day after their wedding, in a private plane. Seen here with Tina Ambani (top). The dressed up plane (below)

So, how did you decide on the guest list?
The most crucial factor while deciding the guest list was my critically ill mother. In the last one year we haven't celebrated Diwali, Holi or my father's birth anniversary in Lucknow. We didn't want to have any celebration when my mother is lying in the hospital. At the same time, Abhishek is my only son. And it was his only wedding and the happiest moment in his life. How could we ignore that moment in his life? How could we deny him that moment of joy? This is what the circumstances were. We decided to have an intimate family gathering. Aishwarya's family and we decided to have a common wedding card and a common venue. And we chose friends who were absolutely impossible to ignore. Whatever we did we did it with the concurrence of both our families. We're happy with our decision. I'd like to believe that the industry too would share our happiness.

But some of your colleagues are hurt because they weren't invited.
Perhaps they are, perhaps they aren't. Either way, I'm fine with it. I respect their sentiments and I expect them to respect mine. If they're offended because they weren't invited then they weren't my friends in the first place. I couldn't go beyond the list we had. And in any case, everyone, from Shah Rukh to Hrithik to Salman, has sent their good wishes.

What about the accusation that a section of the media was manhandled?
There was a virtual assault on our privacy. I had 40 cars following us when I was driving Aishwarya and Abhishek home after the bidaai. We were bringing the new Mrs Bachchan home. It was big moment for us.

It was big moment for us. The auspicious time to reach home was 6.57 pm before sunset. We were stuck in traffic jam. And we were desperate to make it on time. In the middle of this Amar Singhji needed urgent medical attention. At 6.55 pm, just as I was about to enter Prateeksha, 50 photographers charged towards us and wouldn't let us move. I had a sick person who desperately needed a doctor, and a bride who needed to get to her sasuraal. And we couldn't move! Do you know what that felt like?

They were doing their job.
The worst was yet to come. After the wedding late at night, Aishwarya and Abhishek wanted to visit the hospital to take my mother's blessings. But the couple was stranded in the car. They couldn't get out of the car to take my mother's blessings. I was reminded of the time when I fell ill and my stretcher couldn't be brought out of the ambulance for nearly half an hour. My mother is now oblivious to her surroundings. She wouldn't even have known what's happening. But Abhishek and Aishwarya wanted to touch her feet. I visit her every day and she can't even recognise me. Can you imagine how frustrating it is? Every day I go to my mother and feel so helpless. Then I've to change my mood to comply with the demands of other activities in my life. Does anyone know what a physical and psychological strain I'm going through? And then to have people shouting and abusing me in front of my own home. It's unfair.

  The Right move

There was plenty of speculation about the coverage of the Abhi-Ash wedding. In the wake of Hello acquiring the rights of the Hurley-Nayar, everyone expected a similar deal to be struck by the Bachchans too, since the curiosity value was much the same, if not more.

It was reported recently that the Bachchans have sold the rights to the Abhi-Ash wedding to, most likely, Travel & Living. But now there has been a formal denial from the family. The Bachchans have clarified that they haven't sold video footage to anyone. No television channel has got the rights, no one will get them. As for photographs, which have been taken aplenty by the Bachchan's official photographer, they remain with the family. The Bachchans will give them out to the media as and when they wish, later.

'I am now looking forward to spending time with bahurani'
Mohua Chatterjee and Mahendra Kumar Singh
[26 Apr, 2007 l 0109 hrs ISTlTIMES NEWS NETWORK]

CANDID CONFESSION: We never kept anything under wraps. The day
Abhishek informed me that he had proposed, we went across to meet
Aishwarya's family to confirm the union, says Big B (TOI Photo)

The wedding aroused intense curiosity but was scrupulously kept away
from public gaze. Now, for the first time, Amitabh Bachchan tells
TOI's Mohua Chatterjee and Mahendra Kumar Singh about the joy,
emotions and frustrations that came with the Abhiash wedding.

Now that Abhishek and Aishwarya are married, can you tell us why it
was the news of the wedding kept under wraps until Jaya Bachchan
confirmed it on the Filmfare night?

We never kept anything under wraps. The day Abhishek informed me
that he had proposed, we went across to meet Aishwarya's family to
confirm the union. This was confirmed to the media by me personally.
The date of marriage took time because many things were under
consideration. An auspicious date, availability of all concerned —
Abhishek and Aishwarya were tremendously busy and in between
shooting schedules, as was yours truly. Jaya was busy with
Parliament and UP elections as was Amar Singhji — that had to be
taken into consideration. Then the extent of the marriage. The
guests, the location, the numbers, who to invite and how. And most
importantly, how to execute all this with the sensitive issue of my
mother lying critically ill in hospital.

Well, are you happy now?

I am grateful to the almighty that everything went off well. We had
desired an intimate occasion with relatives and close friends. We
had desired a common invitation card, a common venue, common mutual
friends, certain sanctity, which all such occasions demand, and we
got all of that. It is not easy to conduct the happiest moment in
the lives of two people joining in holy and everlasting matrimony
without continuously thinking and worrying on my mother's condition,
who is lying critically ill in hospital. So you visit the hospital
in the course of the day and see your mother, the epitome of beauty
and vibrant energy, lying listless, still, gaunt, a sheer frame of
bones, not able to communicate or see or recognise anything or
anyone, not able to move a limb, fed by a tube which punctures her
stomach, to not be able to hear or respond to her son calling out to
her.

And you just stand there by her bedside, helpless and frustrated and
you walk out of the hospital, switch your mood diametrically to
laughter and gaiety and happiness, for the joy that a son's marriage
would bring to any father in the world to get involved and busy in
arranging moments of fun for the happiest and most important day in
his son's life. It's abnormal and it's tough and it takes everything
to be able to accomplish that with some amount of respect, dignity
and resolve. I never wanted to talk about this but I guess you have
caught me in an emotional moment and I shall succumb to it, knowing
full well that this shall be publicly consumed, perhaps without
empathy.

This was easily the most talked about wedding in recent times. How
did you feel about the way it played out in the media?

I will not comment on the media attention. But I will say a few
things. I, nor any other immediate family member ever asked for
media attention. We kept it personal and private. By continuously
writing about it, the media made it nauseatingly public. Not a
single detail carried had any endorsement from either family of its
authenticity. This is not the media's wedding, it is my son's and it
is my private affair. On the night of the wedding, Abhishek and
Aishwarya wanted to seek my mother's blessings. They were chased and
hounded and virtually made captive inside their car at the hospital
premises and were unable to come out of it. They had to forgo that
moment and left without being able to take the blessings of my
mother by touching her feet.

At the time of the bidai, we were running against time. Aishwarya
had to step into the house, auspiciously, before sunset. A cruel
traffic jam on the highway delayed us. There was another emergency
in the car — Amar Singhji took seriously ill. As we neared
Prateeksha, photographers mobbed us, stood in front of the car,
preventing its movement. In the scuffle that followed with the
security, there were unfortunate injuries. I regret that this
happened. I have, with folded hands, apologised on behalf of my
security to the media. The security involved in the incident was not
my personal hired security. Still, they threw stones at my house,
they abused me through slogans outside my house throughout the
night. I have done whatever best we could do in these circumstances,
with utmost dignity. If that is still an issue with the media, I am
sorry I cannot do more. I read today that despite all this, they
wish to boycott me and my family. What can I say, it's a free
country, everyone has the freedom of his or her rights. I shall
respect their decision. Me and my family are not worth it in any
case.

Why was the wedding kept such a low key affair when public interest
in it was obvious?

My mother's critical condition.

Your marriage was also a private affair?

Yes, that's the way Jaya and I wanted it. Abhishek and Aishwarya
left it to our discretion and decision how the wedding was to be
conducted.

There is a buzz that the exclusive world rights of the marriage
visuals have been acquired by a foreign magazine? Do you plan to
release them?

This is false and incorrect. No such offer has come and even if it
did, we would reject it.

There must be considerable heartburn among fellow actors and others
in the industry over the restricted invite list...

We did what we felt right under the circumstance. If they understand
it, fine. If they do not, it's also fine — they were never friends
in the first place then.

Would you like Aishwarya to continue with her acting career?

Yes, no problem or issue from us. In fact, Jaya and I have insisted
on Aishwarya that she must.

Will the newly-wed couple move out into their own apartment or
continue to live with you?

They will live with us. And this decision came voluntarily from both
Abhishek and Aishwarya.

How will you feel if she continues to use her maiden surname?

She desires to use Bachchan as her surname. And she signed her first
autograph in Tirupati as Aishwarya Bachchan.

There is a lot of curiosity about the rituals that were followed.
Was it a mixed affair? Your marriage was also a cross-cultural
affair.

The marriage rites were held according to the bride's desire, in
their culture, through their pandits, with their rituals. One pundit
did it. One from our side gave the couple blessings after the formal
rituals were over. Yes, my marriage was cross-cultural. As a family,
my father never believed in caste or cultures. He, a Kayasth,
married a Sikh in 1942. I married a Bengali, my brother Ajitabh
married a Sindhi, my daughter married a Punjabi, and now my son a
south Indian.

Were you really concerned about her being a Manglik?

I do not know what a Manglik is or means, or whether I need to be
concerned about it. To me, when two individuals make up their mind
to marry, that's all that matters.

Just before he proposed to Aishwarya, Abhishek along with you and
Jayaji had walked all the way to Siddhivinayak temple to seek the
blessings of Ganpati. After marriage, the first thing that the
family did was to visit Tirupati to seek the blessings of Balaji.
You also offered prayers at Varanasi's Vishwanath temple and at
Vindhyachal. Is any of these your family deity?

I do not know what is the meaning of a `family deity'. I and my
family respect all faiths and religions. My father habitually built
little handmade temples in every house we lived in. Apart from
temples, I regularly visit the Haji Ali dargah in Mumbai. We have
been to all the temples you mention but the reasons given and their
timings are all wrong. We walked to Siddhivinayak because we felt
like going there, we have done it before on several occasions. We
went to Tirupati, twice recently within a week. Varanasi was to
offer prayers on my father's birth anniversary on November 27. We
have been holding a kavi sammelan in Lucknow on that day since his
passing away. Last year we could not hold a celebration because my
mother was in hospital, so Jaya suggested that it would be nice if
all of us went to Varanasi to pray instead. So we all got together
there. Aishwarya, in Delhi then, expressed a desire to visit the
temple. So we took her along — not for some Manglik puja as
incorrectly reported. Vindhyachal is the temple where Amar Singhji's
children had their `mundan' ceremony and it is sacred to him. Yes,
Aishwarya went too because by then the engagement was announced and
she had become family. The `sindoor in the maang' speculation was
wrong again. It was a tika from the temple. But yes, the sindoor
from the deity there is considered sacred and we did bring some for
the wedding. Abhishek put that sindoor in her maang.

Now that the wedding is done, what are you looking forward to?

The extreme joy of coming back home from work to spend time with my
bahurani.

That’s all you’ll wear: Jaya Bachchan Saree, saasuji: Aishwarya Rai

Mother-in-law Jaya Bachchan has turned into newly minted bride Aishwarya Rai’s personal designer. We’re told Jaya has bought loads of sarees for her new bahurani from Kolkata.

A source reveals, “Before the wedding, Jaya bought loads of sarees for Ash. Though there is no hardcore rule, Ash will definitely be seen wearing more sarees from now on.”

Italy is one of Jaya Bachchan’s favourite destinations.

So it’s no surprise that she wants her son and his new bride to spend some quality time together there.

Sources reveal that Jaya is so smitten by Italy, that she has arranged for Abhishek and Ash to spend a few days in Florence.

An insider reveals, “Abhishek loves Europe and recently shot in Prague for Drona. Initially, AbhiAsh were thinking of going to the US, but then they preferred to go some place where they were less likely to be mobbed.

Also, Jaya has been to Florence a couple of times and wanted Abhishek to show Ash the beautiful locales.”
Jaya has booked a villa in Florence that overlooks a scenic view. “She has stayed there with Mr Bachchan on previous visits.

It’s on the outskirts of Florence, but is connected with roads that lead you to the city’s main squares or piazzas.

The villa is owned by a local who regularly rents it out to tourists and local vacationeers,” adds the source.

We are told that Ash is very excited by tales that Jaya has told her. “Ash has a fascination for museums, and Florence is home to one of the largest museums in the world (Florence Museum of Art, Science and History). She’s quite excited to visit it.”

It is believed that apart from Florence, the couple will also be visiting Venice.

Will Abhishek's presence in Pradeep Sarkar's Laaga Chunari Mein Daag
be billed as 'guest appearance'? The buzz is that Abhishek agreed to
do what looks like an extended cameo only because of his long
association with Yashraj films.

In fact, earlier Abhishek agreed to do Dhoom 2 only because he didn't
want to break up the Dhoom team.

Says a source, "No one says no to Aditya Chopra, and Abhishek
accepted Dhoom 2 knowing fully well that the role would be far more
timid as compared with Hrithik's. And now in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag
Abhishek's does an extended cameo. It's still not decided if Abhishek
will be billed a guest appearance by Yashraj Films for Laaga Chunari
Mein Daag. But the film belongs to the ladies Jaya Bachchan, Rani and
Konkana. The men –Anupam, Kunal Kapoor and Abhishek—are at best,
supporting characters."

Incidentally, Abhishek joins Rani for the shooting of Laaga Chunari
Mein Daag in June after his honeymoon.

Rani anticipates no awkwardness, and so what if she wasn't invited
for the wedding? "It doesn't matter whether I was at the wedding or
not. I wish Abhishek and Ash all the best. I know how hard it is for
an actress to work so hard and still find the right person to love.
I'm looking forward to Abhishek joining me for Laga Chunari…All his
scenes are with me. I'm sure we'll have a ball," Rani told a friend.

Thank you for coming!

The Rai and Bachchan families gave all guests at the Abhi-Ash wedding a gift containing mithai and a card with shlokas

For a blessed life: Abhishek and Aishwarya at the Tirupati temple on Sunday — two days after their wedding
Guests at the Abhi-Ash wedding don’t have just warm memories of the event.

They have all been given a gift from the Rais and Bachchans thanking them for their presence at the wedding. The gift that included mithai and a card was sent in a white bag with the Bachchan symbol in the centre (picture 1).

Inside the packet were two golden boxes — one with sweets and the other with a beautifully written card (picture 2).

The mithai box was on top of the card box and tied with a golden ribbon. The first box consisted of three types of mithai that were made with dry fruits.

The card, with the Bachchan inscription on its front page, had a Ganpati picture and shlokas written in Hindi (pictures 3 and 4)

The wedding

Aishwarya and Abhishek got married on April 20 at the Bachchans’ home, Prateeksha, in Juhu. Several actors and directors, including Sanjay Dutt, Karan Johar, Ajay Devgan, Kajol, Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia and Ram Gopal Varma, were invited.

Exclusive! Ash and Abhi wedding pix
April 23, 2007 17:40 IST

It was one of the most guarded moments of the Aishwarya Rai-Abhishek Bachchan wedding.

The media, including photographers, were not allowed to step into Bachchan's bungalow Prateeksha -- where the couple were married -- and definitely not allowed to take pictures.

But an avid reader sent us some exclusive photographs of the Ash-Abhi wedding, and now, we share them with you.

Apparently, there were 11 pandits at the wedding.

Also, it appeared that the wedding had a strong sense of Bunt -- the community to which Ash belongs -- traditions.

Abhishek's baraat sets off from Jalsa

New Delhi: Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan set off from his suburban residence for the marriage Jalsa marking the start of their elaborate but private wedding in Mumbai on Friday.
The traditional baraat started at 1700 hrs, IST with Abhishek riding a colourfully decorated white horse and his nephew Agastya - his sister Shweta Nanda's son - sitting in front of him.
Dressed in a gold-embroidered white sherwani and with his face covered with a frill of flowers, Bollywood’s Bunty set forth with family and friends led by his illustrious father Amitabh.
The groom waved to multitudes of fans and onlookers who had gathered outside Jalsa, eliciting crazed cat-calls and shrill whistles.
Earlier, all the baraatis or members of the wedding procession boarded six luxury buses that took them to Prateeksha, the Bachchan family's other residence, where the wedding would be solemnised.
