Hi,
Just could not stop myself from sharing this article. So next time if
you are in Shimla, do visit the mall road for reasons mentioned below.
with warm regards
Varun
There's something amazingly special about Saturdays on the Shimla Mall
Road. The century old Mall Road buzzes extraordinarily on Saturdays
with the ensemble of city's entire young crowd. It wasn't always the
same; Saturdays were no different from any other day, but gradually in
the past few years every Saturday on the Mall has become like a
festive day of every week and can never go unnoticed. Saturday on the
Mall means youth, fashion, trends, dating and style. The hangout
culture amongst boys and girls has made it young and happening. The
Mall - the only and the most happening hang-out place of Shimla!
Seasons go on and off; Saturday on the Mall keeps buzzing and
happening like some college festival, throughout the year.

A fair trade organisation based out of Delhi is looking for potential partnerships with Handicraft groups in Himachal. The organisation is a social venture started by a fellow IRMAn and it is exporting goods to US and Europe. The organisation will also offer support of its own designers who will work with handicraft groups to provide designs as per the market requirements.
If you know of any such groups who could benefit from such as partnership kindly revert back with their contact details, I will immediately initiate a dialogue with them.
Hope to see some positive leads.

I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life... to put to rout all that was not life; and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. - Henry David Thoreau
Prof. Prem Kumar Dhumal, Chief Minister disclosed that JP Group of companies had proposed to enter into partnership to take over the Vivekananda Memorial Research Centre Trust (VMRT) at Palampur.
CM informed that the company had offered to develop the center as a super speciality hospital, where quality and specialized treatment facilities would be available to the people.
There is an increasing awareness about role of youth in building a
more just and equitable society. Within the context of decentralised
democratic processes, the youth groups, if trained and sensitised,
have a tremendous potential to play a more pro-active role as human
rights defenders.
In order to fulfill their roles as active and responsible citizens,
the rural youth needs special skills, training and capacity building
as they are deprived of real education. In order to build
consciousness around multiple issues of justice, peace and harmony at
the family, community and societal levels, the selected leaders
required to be trained to exercise their rights as civil society
members.
With this intention, Jagori Rural Charitable Trust is organising a two
week training course on Gender, Democracy and Citizenship from May 26
to June 10, 2008 at Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India.
Expenses such as accommodation and food for the duration of the
training, cost of course material as well as travel expenses will be
taken care of by Jagori, from the funding support provided by The

There seems to be confusion among people whether 15th april is Himachal day or Statehood Day . 15th April is celebrated as Himachal day and 25th January as Satehood day every year.
Hi,
With the onset of summers, Shimla and the rest of Himachal is also
warming up and tourist have started arriving too.
In the past few months, Voice of Himachal (VOH) team has seen new
engagement with NGOs in Himachal and work has been quite exciting and
fulfilling. The HimVani.com site has matured with content flowing
regularly and people taking pride in writing for the website. This is
more than welcome as from the very beginning HimVani editors have
ensured that quality of content and it is good to see our readers and
writers associating themselves with this.
Now we are looking at next stage of expansion where we would like to
induct few more volunteers in website management team. For this
purpose we are looking for people with the following backgrounds.
Webmaster : Experience in web technologies, especially PHP, MySQL,
CSS, Java scripts etc. Should be willing to spend few hours from
wherever you are in this part of the world.
Writers : If you are based in Himachal, it is more than welcome.
Should be willing to analyse day to day events and provide
interpretations and analysed views on various issues. A flare for
writing will be an added plus.
Note : Even though the opportunities are voluntary in nature but we
are looking for a professional approach to work. The timelines and
deliverables are defined by the volunteers themselves and communicated
to the team as a whole. We love to work with people who stick to their
words and ensure quality of work and timely delivery.
Hope you will find this work exciting and challenging enough. Kindly
drop in a mail or give a call to discuss the possibilities ahead.

I am pleased to inform that our own Dr O.P. Singh has recently announced free coaching for various Medical / Non medical entrance examinations. This facility is available for bonafide Himachali students who are also financially weak. This is a welcome step. An advertisement to this regard has been put up on HimVani.com on Dr. Singh request. The course starts on March 26th, 2008
Dear friends,
To impress upon the government and policy makers the urgent need to
address their issues, about 5,000 single women from Himachal, will
undertake a three-day pad yatra (march) from Arki to Shimla, starting
April 1.
This march is being undertaken to draw the government's attention to
the demands of the Ekal Nari Shakti Sangathan (ENSS) and to sensitise
the government to evolve a rights-based policy for single women.
Rather than patronage, ENSS demands a state policy framed on
principles of inclusion for single women across the state of Himachal
Pradesh.
According to Subhash Mendhapurkar of SUTRA, a Jagjit Nagar (near
Kasauli) based NGO, " more than 3,800 women from six districts of
Himachal have already enrolled for the pad yatra and we are sure of
achieving our target of 5,000 women."
All of the enrolled women will gather in Arki (Mandi) on March 31,
2008 and start walking to Shimla on April 1and reach Vidhan Sabha,
Shimla on April 3, 2008 afternoon to present the Memorandum to state
Chief Minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal.
"This gigantic and historical march requires support from all the
readers of HimVani who are interested in development of Himachal
Pradesh, Mendhapurkar said, adding, "I expect HimVani readers to
support at least 500 women pad yatris."
Key demands of ENSS:
a. For the older single women, pension policy should be framed on the
model of the existing policy in the neighbouring state of Haryana.
Pensions should be paid every month without fail.
b. Those single women who are fighting to secure their rights
vis-Ã -vis their in-laws' family, their cases must be referred to fast
track courts. Also, the spouses of all the single women who are not
paying the maintenance amount, as decreed by either the gram
panchayats or the civil courts, should be legally challenged through
fast track courts.
c. The State should ensure that two acres of land is granted on a
long-term lease (from government's surplus land pool) to all the
economically weak single women who are capable and eager to work as
self-employed farmers.
d. Every single woman should be provided with health care facilities
from the primary to the tertiary level, free of cost.
To organise this pad yatra, ENSS has called upon individuals to make
contributions and make this initiative a mass public movement. A
personal contribution of Rs 600 will help cover the costs of one
participant of the pad yatra, which includes travel, food and
administrative expenses.
"It will also be an expression of your solidarity with this important
cause. In this fight for an individual's rights and dignity, we seek
your support," said Mendhapurkar.
SUTRA is registered under Societies Act 1860 and with Ministry of Home
Affairs, Government of India to receive Foreign Funds. Donations to
