In India, feeding of Zygogramma bicolorata in laboratoty under quarantine conditions was done on 40 plant species. Out these, no adult feeding oviposition or larval feeding were observed except on Parthenium hysterophorus. It should be but the reference literatures say that it has been
tested on few plants. How we can get the number of test species? Dr.
K.A.Kulkarni or anyone from NRC weed science may have some data? I am
also waiting for responses from Australia.

In India, feeding of Zygogramma bicolorata in laboratoty under quarantine conditions was done on 40 plant species. Out these, no adult feeding oviposition or larval feeding were observed except on Parthenium hysterophorus. Slight adult feeding was observed on niger (Guizotia abyssinica) and jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum). Hope, other experts will also be responding. In case Australian position remains unattnded, let me know I will get back to you after recovery from my ill health in order to reply this part.
Wish you and IPRNG family a prosperous year 2006

Dear Shri. Pankaj Oudhia,
Re message No 3 on Parthenium, thanks your posting and the web site.
It can be treated as a weed. If we follow Masanobu Fukuoka's organic
farming concepts, weeds can be used beneficially. However we can
strike a practical via media between different advocacies.TNAU has
done some work on feeding water hyacinth to vermi compost piles to
create a rich manure. Similarly Biosanitiser developed by Dr. Uday
Bhawalkar can be used to compost such weeds. If the soil and water
are carrying more salts than healthy or if they are laden with
undesirable salts, then weeds appear. A healthy soil does not sprout
weeds a is known to most farmers/gardners. Hence instead of burning
he weeds and thereby polluting the air, we can compost it with
biosanitiser treated water. This will then become a biomass resource.
Sincerely,
R. Santhanam

Botanical Dermatology
Feverfew and carrot weed (Parthenium hysterophores)
Feverfew, or carrot weed, is an unwelcome plant, which is also known
as the scourge of India. This species has developed a wide ecologic
niche in India after it was accidentally imported with a consignment
of wheat from the United States.
The Indian plant contains large amounts of sesquiterpene lactones
(SQLs) and produces a severe widespread dermatitis, which occurs
predominantly in men. The dermatitis resembles ragweed dermatitis.

Dear Group Members,
During International conference many participants were eager to
know about the risk assessment for Parthenium in their areas. I am
forwarding Risk Assessment results of Pacific Island Ecosystems at Risk
(PIER) for their reference. It is prepared by Rod Randall of Australia.

I went through the whole write up and it is excellent. There is one observation which may need to be modified. There is a sentence stating that why one pspecies to be encouraged to replace Parthenium and that plant may have the potential to become a weed.
I want react that "A harmless weed can safely replace a harmful weed. Further there has to be some green cover on any public land to prevent soil erosion and also to purify the air. Third point is that we are not recommending any single species anywhere. Our success story includes 12 species in Karnataka. C, Sericea has wider adaptability and relatively strong allelopathic effect".
This question was asked and I answered it. Perhaps you were attending some other session at that time,
Please circulate this lest people understand in a different way. Thanks and congrats once
again.

A new highly oxygenated pseudoguaianolide, 8-beta-acetoxyhysterone C,

Comparison of patch test contact sensitivity to acetone and aqueous

Sharma VK, Sethuraman G, Tejasvi T.

Our aim was to compare the degree of patch test positivity to acetone
and aqueous extracts of Parthenium hysterophorus in patients with
airborne contact dermatitis. We performed patch testing with the
Indian standard series (which includes aqueous extracts of
parthenium, xanthium and chrysanthemum), and with 1 : 100 and 1 : 200
dilutions of an acetone extract of parthenium in 72 patients with
airborne contact dermatitis. All patients showed contact sensitivity
to the 1 : 100 dilution and 67 patients had positive allergic
reactions to the 1 : 200 dilution of the acetone extract, whereas
only 45 patients showed a positive reaction to the aqueous extract of
P. hysterophorus. Our results confirm that parthenium allergens are
more soluble in acetone than in water, and that the acetone extract
is significantly better in detecting contact sensitivity to
parthenium in patients with suspected plant dermatitis. Hence, the
acetone extract is recommended for routine patch testing.
