Similiar is the case of Jatropha. I am agree with you. I am putting
information on negative aspects of problematic weed Jatropha in
different forums but it is bare fact that Jatropha plantation is in
progress and no one is thinking of it. Freelance journalist Shri
Shubhranshu Choudhary, formally in BBC, has written articles on
negative aspects of Prosopis. I will request him to send the details.

I would like to know your stance on Prosopis juliflora which is an agressive invasive species but unfortunately being promoted of late as a good biomass source for electricity generation. I feel that it is scientifically and ethically wrong and would like to put it across at some forum.

Yes. I agree with Dr Gaytam. Public will lose interest in managing parthenium growth the moment we say it has uses too. We have to make use of its positive effect with out giving room for the public to misconceive it!

The same comment was of Dr.N.T.Yaduraju during recent International
conference. Management through Utilization is good concept but we
are not having much success stories specially in case of invasives.
In Chhattisgarh the natives have developed many uses of Ipomoea
carnea. They are using it from its existing population and hence
keeping control on its spread. They are not cultivating it. This
message must go to the public that we are promoting utilization to
manage it. In same way I feel that we can utilize Parthenium also.

To support your concern regarding Parthenium biotype and the National cause, I will add some information on possible dangers of biotypes here by citing an example, inspite of my busy schedule of forthcoming interview. The grapevine mealy bug insect, Maconellicoccus hirsutus which attacks less than 40 plant species in India is known to affect grape production and its trade. However, Caribbean biotype of this mealy bug attacks more than 300 plant species their, is a major threat to western hemisphere (vegetation and tourism) inpite of their best efforts to cotnain it.The insect is a mere ten yrs old quarantine problem.
Kind regards

I feel we have to interact closely about Parthenium. Did you read my book/ We have JSS academy (College of technology) in Noida. Dr hiremuth is the principal. I belong to thatbvidya peetha. I am in US. now. I will be in Delhi on July3rd but not sure of my time at that time. But I keep coming quite often. We can use parthenium;but we have to check its growth because it suppresses all other vegetation. nevertheless, its beneficial aspect has to be harnessed.

Since parthenium is already with us,we need worry about it;but we have to worry about any other invasive species that might find way. We, perhaps, have to observe stringent care than what is stipulated.
GOI and quarantine are to be advised to be alert.

Govt dilutes quality norms on wheat tender
(The Economic Times (India) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) : The
government has thrown food safety standards to the winds by
significantly diluting the quality norms for the latest wheat import
tender issued by the State Trading Corporation this week.
The dilution in quality standards flies in the face of the Centre's
own Plant Quarantine Order and apprehensions abound that this could
infect domestic wheat including a possible second run of the
parthenium weed trail.
The closing date for the tender, issued for the import of 2.2m
tonnes of wheat, is June 20.
Among other significant relaxations, the STC's prescribed quality
standards for the June 12 tender have allowed the presence of an
average 100 banned quarantine weed seeds per 200 kg of samples drawn
from a single consignment.
Even the May tender for three million tonnes of wheat imports,
despite relaxed quality standards, did not relax regulations on the
count of these banned weeds. Consequently, a 100% ban on the 31
listed weeds - including ambrosia maritime, bromus secalinus,
heliotropium amplexicaule, helianthus californicus, thesium australe
and viola arvensis - was specified in that tender.
The fresh tender for the 2.2m tonnes of wheat has also doubled the
presence of deoxynivalenol or DON toxin in the imported wheat to
2000 ppb from the earlier only 1000 ppb, thus paving the way for the
easy import of poorer quality American and Australian wheat into the
country.
Signficantly, although the STC tender details rules to be followed
on phytosanitary standards and on sampling procedures, including
furnishing of PSC, it conveniently leaves the door more than ajar on
alternative sampling procedures that can be used by exporting
countries.
Even fumigation stan-dards have been relaxed, allowing exporters to
ei-ther resort to methyl bromide or to aluminium phosphide for a
period of at least 21 days prior to arrival in India.

Respected Sir,
I am Sajimon from Bilaspur. I am closely associated with Prehari,
Bilaspur. Prehari is an organization functions in Bharat Mata
Higher Secondary School, Bilaspur and actively engaged in
environmental activities.
Last year, Prehari has conducted an indepth study of biological
removal of water hyacinth from water bodies of Chhattisgarh and
successfully removed water hyacinth from Bandhwa talab, Bilaspur
through biological agent.
Bharat Mata Higher Secondary School is situated in Railway
Settlement, Bilaspur where parthenium is abundantly available.
Every year Railway is trying to mechanically destroy the weed. But
the contract is never finalized in time and finally, the entire
exercise becomes a pure wastage.
Now we are interested to take up the project to clean parthenium
biologically, to start with from the entire Railway settlement of
Bilaspur. I hope we will receive positive response from the
Railways too.
I would like to have some enlightenment on your previous experiences
to make the project more effective and successful. Even I am ready
to meet you or your associates as per your convenience.
Expecting your kind coopration,
( Sajimon )
