Family car big weed distributor
THE family car is the No.1 culprit for spreading weeds, a national
conference has been told.
In a report to the Australian Weeds Conference in Adelaide, a
Victorian survey found that when 70 cars were checked for weed seeds,
29 were found to be carrying noxious varieties.

Dear Dr.Rana,
Sorry to know that P.hysterophorus has spread its tenticles in

appreciate if you could kindly integrate/exercise mechanical control
also to contain, if possible which will avoid its spresd. Also, I am
interested in knowing that what is the environmental conditions at
the time of Zygogramma release?. Do you find its activity?. Since, I
am concentrating studies on Zygogramma, at Delhi any kind of

There is no chance that an Indian has not seen parthenium. It is how many Indians are not aware about it, although they have suffered due to its ill effects! But what is lacking is education about the weed and its ill effects and its positive side.
I had the opportunity to organize two International conferences (1997 & 2005) and I have authored a book on Parthenium. If you are interested, I can send one.

Time to weed out all-pervasive parthenium
Monday September 4 2006 11:29 IST
BHUBANESWAR: Exotic and deadly, parthenium hysterophorus is running
wild across Orissa. It might have escaped your attention as the weed
is all pervasive.
Driving down NH 5 towards Cuttack, one can see this dangerous weed
running parallel on both sides of the highway. A cursory glance from
the running train will make one aware of bushes of the white-capped
plants along the tracks. And it has made Utkal University its home
by virtue of its omnipresence.
The foreign weed has been centre of intense debate by experts over
the years and a subject of specialised research projects. The weed,
native to Mexico and West Indies, sneaked into India in early ?50s
with wheat imports from the US. Ever since it gained a foothold in
Pune in 1956, it has spread far and wide.
The concern over its unprecedented growth is not without reasons
though. The weed reduces crop yield by 40 percent while polluting
environment through its pollen grains, says Kshitendra Narayan
Mishra, soil scientist, Weed Control Wing of the All India
Coordinated Project on Weed Control, OUAT.
??Moreover, toxins that Parthenium spreads cause hay fever, asthma,
eczema and dermatitis. Besides, cattle and domestic animals too are
also affected by it,?? he added.
The weed can grow in any type of climate and soil. What helps is its
capability to germinate in both dark and light conditions. A
temperature ranging from 25 to 30 degree Celsius and a photo period
of 10 hours facilitate faster germination.
An assessment by the Weed Control Wing says that the weed has
infested rail tracks and roadsides, wastelands in mining and
industrial sites like Angul, Damanjodi, Rourkela, Talcher, Sunabeda,
Paradip and Keonjhar.
In the Capital, it has pervaded Mancheswar Industrial Estate and the
airport area besides the premier varsity campus.
?Awareness is key to containment,? says Mishra. The agriculture
varsity has been running campaigns for the last two years in this
regard.

RECORDING WORST WEED DATA The Australian Government's Bureau of Rural Sciences has announced publication of A FIELD MANUAL FOR SURVEYING AND MAPPING NATIONALLY SIGNIFICANT WEEDS, a 52-page, 2006 volume that sets forth and explains standardized, systematic procedures for collecting core weed infestation data for mapping those plants that are Australia's 20 "weeds of national significance" or WONS. The manual's foreword pointedly notes that "weeds are one of the major problems affecting Australia's natural ecosystems and agricultural vegetation." Authors I. McNaught, _et al_, promote the systematic recording of key information regarding weed infestations, and the parameters for recording it. Key core information to identify and monitor a weed site is grouped under 15 headings or "attributes" that are clearly defined in the Manual. The rationale set forth for detailed information: solid data underpins priorities for follow-up action. The Manual is available both in free PDF on-line and printed versions at: http://www.affashop.gov.au/product.asp?prodid=13456.

Dear Group Members,
Please inform about your plans to visit North Karnataka to see
Parthenium success stories under guidance of Dr.Mahadevappa. If we
have sufficient members then we can organise small group meeting. As
informed earlier I am ready to reach around September 25, 2006.

Thanks for this valuable information. Niger(Ramtil) is also under
cultivation in Chhattisgarh.
How Zygogramma population is affecting the indigenous population of
insects mainly friendly insects? Whether anyone is working on this
aspect? I have yet not found any reference on this aspect?

should never be stopped. One of my Ph.D student has screened a few
plants species of Delhi flora under his Ph D programme and none of
the plants are accepted except nobbling on few plants. The results
at this stage can not be provided unless published. I am advicing
Virginia state university on Parthenium management who are much
concerned about releases of Zygogramma in African countries as a
possible risk to niger (Guizotia) cultivation .Since, niger is
important crop in jabalpur area some should also screen available
cultivars too.

I do agree that there is a need to monitor the appetite of Zygogramma on different plant hosts especially in the new area of release.I would appreciate that some one should take up this study with regards to forest flora. As clear from your mail that Zygogramma was tested in very few plant species then why trials are not in progress to evaluate its host specificity on wide range of plants specially on forest herbs? We are having thousands of herbs. And also why before such long time evaluation we are presenting this exotic insect as potential bioagent for exotic weed Parthenium? Please give your comments.

Dear Dr.Gautam,
I am opening the old link again as many new members like
Dr.Sushil Kumar and Chitra Shankar joined us recently. Whenever I
vist to tribal region with proposal to release Zygogramma the
natives raise many questions. They are much cautious about their
forest. As clear from your mail that Zygogramma was tested in very
few plant species then why trials are not in progress to evaluate
its host specificity on wide range of plants specially on forest
herbs? We are having thousands of herbs. And also why before such
long time evaluation we are presenting this exotic insect as
potential bioagent for exotic weed Parthenium? Please give your
comments.

Subject: hello
Dear Pankaj
I got your name from one of websites on parthenium. and learnt
about the
society for parthenium Management. I am a retired Professor of
Veterinary
Physiology and settled in Meerut(UP) near Delhi. Before retirement I
was
serving in a University at Palampur, in Kagra district of Himachal
Pradesh.
I never had any allergic problem there. I moved to Meerut in the
year 1999
and just one year later i.e. from the year 2000, I am facing the the
allergy
problem which doctos tell me is due to parthenium . Every year from
April to
October, I have dermatitis which mainly affects the face and neck
region
but sometimes the whole body. There is no effective treatment and
the
allergy has become a great nuisace. From November to March i.e.
during
winter , I am fine and there are no allergic symptoms.
I don’t mind shifting from Meerut area but have no idea where to go.
I wish
to seek your guidance on the following
(a) Which places in India are free of parthenium? Could you
enlighten me
about the source which gives information about ditribution of this
plant in
India.
(b) Are parts of Rajasthan like Ajmer,Jaipur, Bharatpur, Jodhpur
etc free?
(c) What about high hills like Mussori, Shimla. Are they free of
parthenium?
(d) How about lower hills like Dehradun, areas near chandigarh
etc
(e) What is the possible treatment/management of the allergy?
(f) Is there any specialized body of doctors /hospital who
specializes in
treratment of parthenium allergy?
(g) Any other relevant information
Sorry to bother you and hope to hear from you.
Sincerely
Dr Satya Psingh
