Dear dr Oudhia,
It is interesting to note that Parthenium is a major
weed in Australia.
Do they report as many cases of Dermatitis as seen in
India? I do not recollect such reports. Is it a major
cause of dust allergy or asthma?
Regards,
Srinivas

Seed imports must be weed free

'The establishment of parthenium has been a farming and human health
disaster for this country', said Dr McFadyen. 'We simply can't afford
to go on allowing serious weeds into this country through seed
imports - or by any other route for that matter, accidental or
deliberate.'

What makes Bangaloreans sneeze

Priyanjana Dutta
CNN-IBN

Bangalore: Health problems due to pollution are on the rise and tech-
city Bangalore is topping the list with highest number of dust
allergy cases.

Many like Vasudharini, who have been living in Bangalore for years
now, are biting the dustâ€"literally.

As this 49-year-old gets ready for her morning walk, she knows
she'll have to take extra precautions against a city that is
becoming increasingly polluted.

"Initially, I wasn't getting this problem. But from the last 11
years, I'm suffering because of this dust allergy. Basically, it's
due to dust and I start coughing, sneezing and then ultimately I get
breathing problems," says Vasudharini Narayan, a resident of
Bangalore.

"When we shifted to Bangalore, pollution was not that much. Now, the
number of vehicles on the road has gone up and pollution has
aggravated the problem," she adds.

And it's not just older people who're being affected, four-year-old
Dhruvi has been fighting a dust allergy since she was two.

"When she was two and half, she started going to school. Because of
the dust on her way, and due to other kids in school, she used to
get cough and cold more often," says Sowmya Dayanand, a resident of
Bangalore.

A recent study conducted by the Batra health clinic across major
metros found that Bangalore had the highest concentration of
patients with dust allergies.

"The percentage of patients having dust allergy since last year has
risen by 33.58," says Branch Head at Dr Batra's Clinic, Dr Savita
Sasihithlu.

"Dust allergy can manifest itself as just sneezing or common allergy
which many patients can live with for some years but it's only when
it goes into wheezing or bronchitis, that's a potentially life
threatening position," she adds

There was a time when this weed â€" parthenium â€" was considered one of
the root causes of respiratory tract allergies and infections in
Bangalore.

But now, it's more vehicular pollution and large scale construction
activity that's making dust allergy a very common recurring health
disorder.

Guilty of eBay sale

A Seaford woman has been fined $400 for selling a state-prohibited
weed on
  internet auction site eBay.

The 42-year-old woman pleaded guilty to selling a number of highly
invasive water hyacinth plants on eBay in the Frankston
Magistrates' Court
  last week.

An Edithvale man is also expected to face court later this month
after
being charged with attempting to sell water hyacinths on eBay.

The Department of Primary Industries was first alerted about the
sale of
the weeds on eBay early last year by one of its volunteer Weed
Spotters.

DPI officers have since seized about 160 water hyacinth plants in
  Victoria.

NEW ALERT FOR WATER HYACINTH

The Department of Agriculture and Food has issued a new alert for
water
hyacinth, a declared plant in Western Australia and one of the
world's worst
water weeds.

Department spokesman Simon Merewether said reports had been received
that
water hyacinth was being sold at a weekend market in Perth.

"It is also still frequently found in garden ponds in the
metropolitan
Perth, and in country regions," he said.

"Water hyacinth looks an attractive plant, but it is an aquatic weed
that
presents a major threat to our environment and economy.

"It clogs waterways, reducing fish populations, harbouring
mosquitoes, and
causing great problems for communities by waterways. It must be
eradicated
for the good health of our rivers and other waterways.

"It is illegal to sell or keep water hyacinth in Western Australia,
and it
must not imported. Water hyacinth in a pond or aquarium must be
destroyed."

Mr Merewether said water hyacinth was a weed that could only survive
in
water.

"The plants can be destroyed by composting or by drying them out and
placing
securely in a plastic bag before disposing in a rubbish bin," he
said.

Suspect plants can be reported to the Pest and Disease Information
Service -
freecall 1800 084 881 or to the nearest Department office.

Hello!

My assumption regarding the growth of P.hystoperous as road side weed is that its invassion require juncture, which give rudral developing nature and   micro climate to weed like fine soil particles, regular disseminaion of seeds by various agencies  ultimately help the vigrous growth.

The weed seems to grow alnog road sides and besides railway tracks. My
guess is because of lack adequate drainage & disposal & decay of waste
the soil is more condusive to P hysterophorus.

Azathioprine is often used in treating parthenium
induced dermatitis. We were the first to report its
efficasy way back in 1992 in British Journal of
dermatology.
Subseqiently Dr Pasricha et al from AIIMS reported its
efficasy and so did Dr VK Sharma from PGI Chandigarh.
Dr Kaushal Verma associate of Dr Pasricha from AIIMS
reported its effectiveness as pulse therapy. The
recommendation was iffective in one patient but
susequent patients either did not find it as effective
as regular dosing or could not tolerate the pulse
dosage.More work needs to be done along this line.
Azthioprine is a drug that brings most often partial
but occasionally relief among cases of Parthenium
dermatitis.
It is slow to act and is to be monitored carefully as
it may suppress the bone marrow.
Regards,
Srinivas
