After their embarrassing 140-run loss to Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata
Knight Riders in the IPL opener here, the Bangalore Royal Challengers
came into their own in a tight away win over the Mumbai Indians on
Sunday.
In the match on Sunday, allrounder Balachandra Akhil came up with a
brilliant bowling display as he had statemate Robin Uthappa (48)
stumped and later had Pinal Shah (19) caught at point.
In a format like T20, bowlers are always at their wits end and
considering that they get the ‘royal’ treatment in their quota of four
overs, Akhil did wonderfully well to give away just 17 runs in three
overs while scalping the duo.
“It was an important match for us after losing to Knight Riders at
home,” Akhil said. The allrounder felt that everything went out of hand
in the opening tie. “We had a strategy for the first game, but nothing
went our way from the start,” he said.
The 30-year-old believes that the IPL will only benefit the
youngsters and heighten their ability to withstand pressure. With T20
being touted as the future of the game, Akhil says the IPL could well
be the gateway for the Indian squad.
Buoyed
by back-to-back victories in Indian Premier League (IPL), the Kolkata
Knight Riders are confident of keeping up the momentum to win the
grueling tourney.
Both skipper Sourav
Ganguly and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, whose Red Chillies
Entertainment owns the side, feel that the good start augurs well for
the team.
"We have started well and hope to continue this trend," Ganguly said.
Echoing Ganguly, the matinee idol said, "We have to continue to do well in the coming matches."
The
team crushed Rahul Dravid-led Bangalore Royal Challengers by 140 runs
in the tournament lung opener on Friday and followed it up with a
five-wicket win over Deccan Chargers captained by VVS Laxman on Sunday.
Asked
to name the team which he considered the toughest competitor for the
Knight Riders, Shah Rukh promptly replied, "We are the toughest
competitor for all other teams".
"But our coach has told the players that they have to deliver the best to succeed in the tournament. The team has to work hard."
"I have got a bunch of boys who are honest, sincere and die hard," he said at the launch of the official timewear for his side.
On
whether he was nervous when his team was losing wickets quickly, he
said, "I never feel nervous. Sometimes I feel sad and sometimes I
become sentimental. I want them (the players) to do their best.."
Team
co-owner and filmstar Juhi Chawla as also all members of the Kolkata
Knight Riders were present at the programme held at a city hotel.
A
magnificent unconquered 76 by Shane Watson steered the Rajasthan Royals
to a six-wicket win over the King's XI, Punjab in the sixth match of
the inaugural IPL tournament at the Sawai Man Singh stadium here on
Monday..
Watson, who smashed five
fours and five sixes in his 49-ball knock was ably supported by
Ravindra Jadeja who made an unbeaten 36 with the help of five
boundaries and one six. The duo put an unbroken 69-run stand as Jaipur
cruised home in 18.1 overs.
Chasing
166 Jaipur got off to a shaky start, losing Mohammad Kaif (five),
Yousuf Pathan (seven) and Kamran Akmal (17) early. But then Darren
Lehmann (17) after struggling in the beginning put 51 runs for the
fourth wicket as Jaipur stayed in contention to clinch the game.
After
Lehmann was nailed by Irfan Pathan, Jadeja and Watson not only ensured
there no further hiccups in the Jaipur innings but also took the
erratic Mohali bowling to the cleaners.
Leg-spinner
Piyush Chawla who had a horrid outing against Chennai was once again
flayed, giving away 27 runs in his two overs. S Sreesanth accounted for
38 runs in his 3.1 overs as Watson and company took him apart.
Earlier, some disciplined bowling by Jaipur restricted Mohali to 166-8 in their allotted 20 overs.
Powered
by skipper Yuvraj Singh's 34-ball 57, the Mohali team managed a
respectable total after Shane Warne' men dominated proceedings for a
sizable passage of the innings. 18 boundaries and seven sixes were hit
during the innings courtesy a blazing start and Yuvraj's flourish in
the middle.
Karan Goel (26) got
Mohali off to a flier clobbering three boundaries and two sixes before
Munaf Patel, who received heavy punishment from the southpaw, cleaned
him up with a yorker.
And then the
introduction of spin turned the tide as Shane Warne sent back Kumar
Sangakkara (20) and James Hopes (16) while Dinesh Salunke scalped
Mahela Jayawardene (two) to reduce Mohali to 73-4.
It
was then left to skipper Yuvraj Singh to do the rescue act and he did
just that with some help from the fielders. Yuvraj who was dropped on
15 by Darren Lehmann and then by Mohammad Kaif on 29, smashed a
blistering half-century which comprised six fours and three sixes. He
added 63 with Irfan Pathan before Warne trapped him leg-before in his
last over. The leg-spinner finished with figures of 3-19 off his four
overs.
Mohali then lost two more
wickets without adding a run in attempts to up the ante. But a late
surge by Piyush Chawla, who made 24 off 11 boundaries, some
respectability in the total.
Both
teams lost their opening matches and will be looking to register their
first win in the competition. Mohali were beaten to Chennai and Jaipur
were comprehensively outplayed by Delhi on Sunday.
While
the Yuvraj Singh-led team from Punjab, like in their previous
encounter, will have the full squad at their discretion, the Jaipur
outfit will still be without many of their overseas players like Graeme
Smith.
Mahela Jayawardene replaced Simon Katich in the eleven for Mohali while Kamaran Akmal made his way into the Jaipur side.
Teams:
King's XI Punjab (Mohali):
Karan Goel, James Hopes, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Yuvraj Singh (capt),
Mahela Jayawardene, Irfan Pathan, Sunny Sohal, Brett Lee, Piyush
Chawla, Wilkin Mota, S Sreesanth.
Rajasthan Royals (Jaipur):
Kamran Akmal, Yusuf Pathan, Shane Watson, Mohammad Kaif, Darren
Lehmann, Ravindra Jadeja, Pankaj Singh, Dinesh Salunkhe, Shane Warne
(capt), Siddharth Trivedi, Munaf Patel.
Facing
criticism for the poor strip for their Indian Premier League tie
against Deccan Chargers, Eden Gardens curator Kalyan Mitra went to the
Kolkata Knight Riders dressing room and apologised to the players even
as there was a move to fly in a pitch consultant from Australia to
improve the state of the wicket.
"The
curator came to our dressing room after the match and apologised to all
of us. He has promised a better wicket for our next match as also the
five other games the team will play at the Eden later in the
tournament," Australian captain Ricky Ponting, a member of the Knight
Riders, disclosed here..
After losing
the match on Sunday, Deccan Chargers skipper V V S Laxman described the
pitch as "shocking for any format of the game."
Echoing
Laxman, Ponting said "We are very shocked at the nature of the pitch.
Hopefully we will get a better wicket in the next match."
An annoyed BCCI has asked its pitch and grounds committee chairman Daljit Singh to rush to the Eden and suggest remedies.
Cricket
Association of Bengal President Prasun Mukherjee said CAB has agreed to
a proposal from Jai Mehta, the co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders,
that a pitch consultant be brought from Australia to inspect the wicket.
"I
told him we have no problems with that. The pitch is being prepared by
our local curators under the supervision of Daljit Singh.
"The
Australian pitch specialist, Daljit and our curator can jointly inspect
the pitch and decide on the remedial measures," Mukherjee said.
Daljit
said BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah and IPL cricket committee co-chairman
M P Pandove called him up and asked him to proceed to the city.
"I
also received a message from IPL cricket committee chairman M A K
Pataudi. They have all expressed serious concern over the wicket. I
will be inspecting the ground this evening," he said.
Daljit
said "We have to accept that it was not a track suitable for the game.
We have to ensure a better wicket. Eden Gardens is a great ground. We
expect better wickets at a venue like this."
The
two-paced pitch caused much discomfort to batsmen, who found it hard to
play shots and the Twenty20 game was uncharacteristically low-scoring.
The unpredictable naure of the track also foxed the rival skippers, who took blows on their bodies.
While
a rising off-cutter from Ishant Sharma left Laxman wringing his hands
in pain after being hit, a Chaminda Vaas delivery jumped suddenly from
the good length spot to strike Sourav Ganguly on the right side of his
chest.
The hassled curator Kalyan Mitra stayed away from the media, but the CAB stood behind him.
"He
will be in charge till the end of his contract in July. We have no
plans to replace him," CAB joint secretary Samar Pal said.
He
said an emergency meeting was held with the curators and other members
of the pitch committee last night to prepare an improved wicket in the
next match.
"We found that the wicket did not behave as it should have as the surface was dry. We are taking the needed steps."
Even
before the start of the Indian Premier League, the high-profile foreign
players have started to make a difference. The likes of Adam Gilchrist,
Andrew Symonds and Scott Styris have become mentors of the local lads
who would play for Deccan Chargers, and they are enjoying spending
their time with these experienced star cricketers.
“It’s been a great experience just practicing with them (the foreigners).
I think I’ll be a more matured cricketer when I go out to play next
time,” averred Pragyan Ojha, the reliable left-arm spinner of Deccan
Chargers and one of the most promising tweakers of the country.
N. Arjun Yadav, another Hyderabadi in the team, is delighted with
the cricket culture he has come to know from “Symmo, Gilly and Scoty.”
“It’s very different from us.
They are very aggressive on the field.
That is something we have to learn from them,” revealed Arjun.
“We’ll definitely get to know more about the technical aspects of the
game in time but right now Symmo, Gilly and Scoty have enriched us with
their attitude to the game.” Asked to elaborate, Arjun said: “All the
three are psychologically very tough. I asked Gilly about handling
pressure in big games, he told me you should not think about what will
happen after this, what will people say if I do this or that. You
should concentrate on the task at hand.” “This advice is going to help
a lot as we’re going to play in front of big crowds which means a lot
of pressure,” he explained.
Ravi Teja, the Hyderabad youngster who is humble while talking and
arrogant while batting, said all the local players are getting help
from the big guns. “It’s a privilege to work with Gilchrist, Symonds,
Styris and (VVS) Laxman bhai. They’ve been guiding us about all the
aspects of the game,” he told this newspaper.
“Symonds has given me a lot of tips about fielding,” he told specifically.
It is said that spinners owe a lot of their success to the
wicketkeepers, and Pragyan revealed that Gilly has already started
advising him on the ways to bowl in Twenty20.
“Gilly told me that the most important thing about bowling in
Twenty20 is that you have to read the batsman before he reads you,”
Pragyan explained. “So he asked me not to bowl at one pace all the
time. I also need to vary the length so that the batsman cannot
anticipate what I’m going to bowl.” All the youngsters including
Vinaykumar, Sarveesh Kumar, Kalyankrishna and Halhadhar Das, who are
just starting their career are overwhelmed by the way the highprofile
international cricketers are reaching out to them. Above all, there is
captain Laxman and coach Robin Singh as the father figures, they say.
The
Deccan Chargers were caught unawares on a brute of a wicket at the Eden
Gardens in their match against the Kolkat Knight Riders on Sunday.
Batting first, the Chargers were left clueless as the wicket began to
play tricks from the start itself.
One man who would have been quite handy for the Chargers is Pakistan
allrounder Shahid Afridi. Not only is he a big hitter of the ball but
Afridi is also a match winning bowler. On such a track, he would have
proved more than a handful for Knight Riders.
Come Tuesday, it will be boom boom time as the flamboyant
all-rounder takes the field against Delhi Daredevils at the Rajiv
Gandhi International Stadium. Afridi, who missed the first match
against Knight Riders because of his commitment with the Pakistan team,
is gearing up for the challenge. “I am keen to play in the second
match,” Afridi had said in Karachi on Saturday.
Afridi said he had watched the match between Bangalore Royal
Challengers and Kolkata Knight Riders and the concept had already
excited him. “I am looking forward to play in the IPL because it is
something new and getting to play alongside the best players in the
world is going to be a unique experience,” he said.
The Deccan Chargers’ supporters are in for a real treat as the
explosive Afridi is one player who can change the complexion of a game
within no time. His aggressive and attack oriented style of batting has
earned him the nickname “Boom Boom Afridi” for the fastest ODI century
in just 37 balls.
In international cricket, Afridi is the maddest of all Mad Maxes.
Known for his big hitting, Afridi hits many sixes long and high,
favouring the path straight down the ground or over midwicket. A
trademark shot is a crossbatted flick to the leg-side to a ball outside
off stump. He has struck a whopping 501 fours and 247 sixes in 258
ODIs. In Twenty20 cricket, Afridi has sent the ball to the ropes 14
times and eight over them in 10 matches. And on Tuesday, the Chargers
will hope that Afridi does some serious damage to the morale of the
Daredevils.
Glenn McGrath, Farveez Maharoof, Brett Geeves, Rajat Bhatia and
Daniel Vettori will be left scratching their heads when ‘The Beast’
tears into their attack. With Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds and Afridi
in a top-class batting line-up, the visitors will have to come up with
something special to contain this formidable trio.
If one thinks that the Delhi bowlers will be the only ones at the receiving end of Afridi’s assault, they are in for a surprise.
The 28-year-old Afridi is a competent bowler too. His stock ball is
the leg break, but his armoury also includes the conventional off break
and a ‘quicker one’ which he can deliver at nearly 80 mph in the style
of a medium pacer. He bowls at a high speed for a spin ner, resulting
in lesser turn, and relying more on variations in speed. In the 2007
World Twenty20 he performed poorly with the bat but brilliantly with
the ball to earn the Man of the Series award.
After Shoaib Akhtar’s non-availability because of the PCB ban,
Afridi is clearly Pakistan’s biggest draw in the IPL. “I think the IPL
not only augurs well for players as far as earning money is concerned
but is also an ideal platform to learn a lot and improve skills,” he
said.
Afridi is also happy to play under the captaincy of VVS Laxman. He
said he had a lot of regard and respect for the cricketing abilities of
Laxman. “In the past we have played against each other. Now I would
love to perform under him for the team.” With Afridi making his
intentions clear, the Delhi Daredevils are in for some trouble on the
morrow.
Poor lights, umpiring errors and a substandard pitch contrived to
subdue a spirited fight by the Deccan Chargers in their opening IPL
match against the Kolkata Knight Riders at an erratic Eden Gardens here
on Sunday.
After being bowled out for 110, the Hyderabad team had done well to
have the Knights on their knees at 89/5 in the 17th over when two of
the four light towers shut down suddenly.
The half-hour break provided the home team time to recover and
regroup before they went on to the field needing 22 runs from 20 balls
while the Chargers had to go through the drills and expend extra energy
to warm up and take to the ground.
Man of the match David Hussey admitted it was a welcome break. “It
was a decent break for us, giving us time to collect our thoughts and
have a drink to get back our energy. It worked very well for us,” he
said. Chargers captain V.V.S. Laxman rued the interruption. “It
definitely affected us because we had the momentum going when the
lights shut down,” he said.
Laxman also called the wicket “shocking.” “This was not a wicket for
any format of the game, leave alone Twenty20 cricket,” he said.
Recalling his last three matches on this ground, the middle-order
batsman said: “The wicket has been slow in the Ranji Trophy and a Test
match I have played here in the last six months. Now this game. This is
not what we expect at the Eden.” Hussey concurred with the view. “It
was not an ideal wicket, possibly underprepared,” he said.
Rival captains Laxman and Sourav Ganguly getting hit because of awkward bounce while batting was testi mony to the poor pitch.
That’s not all. The Eden authorities were also responsible for the
lights goof-up.. The CESC, which supplies power to most of Kolkata, said
in a statement: “The light failure is not because of our fault, but an
internal error at Eden Gardens. We are in no way responsible.” The
third factor that hobbled the Chargers was an umpiring mistake by Billy
Bowden. He turned down a full throated lbw appeal against Sourav
Ganguly while television replays showed the ball would have crashed
right into his stumps..
The Kolkata captain was on one and his team 16/2 in the third over then.
The let off proved vital as the former Indian captain went on to add
47 crucial runs in the company of David Hussey for the fourth wicket
before being bowled by left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha.
The
Kolkata Knight Riders beat two opponents - the Deccan Chargers and a
near-impossible batting wicket - tonight to firmly establish themselves
as one of the early favourites to win the tournament.
Sourav
Ganguly and his team held their nerve in the face of a deteriorating
pitch, failing floodlights, and a spirited performance by the Hyderabad
team to notch up their second successive win, in a bizarre, yet tense
and thrilling match at the Eden Garden.
On
a wicket that was a poor advertisement for T20 cricket, chasing even a
110 runs was always going to be tricky. The Chargers struck early, with
Chaminda Vaas and R.P.Singh bowling intelligently and using the
conditions well to get rid of danger man Bredon McCullum and Ricky
Ponting for next to nothing. Wridhiman Saha followed soon after, and
Eden Gardens was suddenly quiet.
However,
Sourav Ganguly was not finished. With David Hussey, he steadied the
ship with an innings that was of a far higher quality than it appeared
to be. They negotiated the best that the Chargers attack had to offer
with patience and skill, rebuilding the innings with a crucial 47 run
partnership. Ganguly finally fell trying to force the pace, bowled by
young Pragyan Ojha.
After the
heroics from his brother Michael on Saturday, David Hussey decided that
it was time for him to come to the IPL party. Helped along by a
terrific cameo from Mohammed Hafeez, who hit Symonds for a huge six
amidst mounting pressure, Hussey kept going, picking singles and
hitting boundaries with regularity. Then Hafeez fell to an ambitious
reverse sweep (how many batsmen has that shot claimed in tense situations?), and the momentum swung again.
And then the lights went out.
Players
stood around, umpires conferred, coaches waved arms frantically, and
Shah Rukh Khan and his contingent looked on nervously from the stands.
It all made for great, stirring drama. The possibility of a Duckworth
Lewis decision loomed large. Someone mentioned a bowl-out. Luckily, the
lights came back on after a short while, and the game was thankfully
resumed.
Almost as if the
interruption had steadied his nerves, Hussey smashed Scott Styris, who
had been outstanding up to that point, for a six and a four of
successive deliveries to considerably ease the pressure. In the next
over, it was all over when Hussey hoisted Ojha for a huge six,
triggering celebrations in the stands.
Earlier,
the Deccan Chargers won the toss and elected to bat. From the very
first over from Ishant Sharma, the ball raised a puff of dust wherever
it pitched. The odd ball kept low and the odd one took off - not the
greatest of batting conditions. The Knight Riders kept the ball in the
right places, took their catches and generally did fairly well to
restrict the Chargers to 110. Only Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds -
two of the best limited overs batsmen in the world - managed to get any
measure of the pitch, which is an indication of just how difficult it
was to bat..
At the end of the
day, the Knight Riders proved that they could overcome any opposition
and any conditions. They have won in perfect batting conditions in
Bangalore, and on a demon of a wicket here tonight.
However,
SRK and Ganguly will hope that the ground staff at Eden Gardens can
save them the jangled nerves next time around, by providing a better
pitch and reliable lights.
Brendon McCullum has played the lead. Now it’s time for the others to strum the right chord.
In Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds, Deccan Chargers have the resources to match or better McCul lum’s firepower.
This makes Sunday’s Indian Premier League match at the Eden Gardens a mouth-watering prospect.
Indeed, the match between the Deccan Chargers and the Kolkata Knight
Riders has been billed as a dress rehearsal for the final. Dec can
skipper V.V.S. Laxman, however, does not agree as he rightly believes
that equations can take a U-turn in the Twenty20 format.
One thing is certain though, the spotlight would be on the battle
between the Aussie duo and the Kiwi dasher who sky-rocketed into
stardom on the night when cricket changed for the better.
Spare a thought for the others as well. And there are stars in plenty.
Scott Styris has played many a match-winning knock for New Zealand and is one of the mainstays of Deccan batting.
Sri Lankan Chamara Silva and skipper Laxman add solidity to the order.
Silva, along with his compatriot Chaminda Vaas did not come with the
team on Saturday morning and were expected to join the squad later in
the night.
Silva is likely to open with Gilchrist. As far as Playing XI is
concerned, Laxman said that it would be decided on Sunday morning.
Deccan miss Shahid Afridi and Herschelle Gibbs for this match as the
former is busy playing for his country, while Gibbs will join after
South Africa’s domestic championship. Bowling would be in the hands of
Vaas, Nuwan Zoysa and R.P.
Eden Gardens wicket can offer help to Symonds’ off-spinners and Pragyan Ojha’s left-arm spin as well.
Knights, on the other hand, are gung-ho after their huge win in the lung opener.
McCullum will be there to take the attack to the bowlers, and
someone answering to the name Ricky Ponting is keen to play a memorable
innings in front of 90,000 fans.
The bowlers, led by Ishant Sharma did enough in the first match to make up for Shoaib Akhtar or Umar Gul’ absence.
Sourav Ganguly’s firebrand leadership adds fizz to the side.
Still, the Knights may miss Chris Gayle. The West Indies captain has
been rendered hors de combat for first few matches. Tatenda Taibu is a
likely replacement.
To witness all these there will be a host of celebrities.
Shah Rukh Khan himself will perform during the break. Priyanka Gandhi will be there along with her husband.
Rahul Gandhi, too, is expected. There will be almost all the bigwigs
from the BCCI, including president Sharad Pawar. And tickets are sold
out.
Singh. Zoysa looked sharp in the nets.
For RP, it’s time to make amends after a very mediocre Test series.
London:
England are set to be offered $100 million (Â&෧£&෧50 million)
to play five Twenty20 matches against a West Indies all-star side,
according to reports here on Saturday.
The England and Wales
Cricket board (ECB) this week revealed they were "very likely" to
accept around Â&෧£&෧10 million ($20 million) for a one-off
match in the Caribbean that would be the richest single game in the
sport&ී&෧s history.
The idea is the brainchild of
Sir Allen Stanford, the billionaire banker from Texas, who finances the
Stanford 20/20 Tournament in the West Indies, and who wants to expand
the concept.
Stanford wants England to play five Twenty20
games against his West Indies all-star side, the first to coincide with
Independence Day in Antigua on November 1.
And he held talks
with ECB chief executive David Collier on Tuesday. "I talked to David
about the first game and then how we could collaborate in the future,"
Stanford told The Times.
"I said that it could be
an annual event, maybe we could come to Lord&ී&෧s in 2009 and
then alternate. I would be happy to make a five-year commitment."
Asked if that meant a total input of US dollars 100 million, he said:
"I would be willing to do it. The money is real and I think we will get
a game. David is a great guy and we seem to be on the same page."
The
Chennai Super Kings, powered by a brilliant ton from Michael Hussey,
emerged victorious in their opeing game against Kings XI Punjab on
Saturday. Hussey played a near-perfect innings, exhibiting clean, crisp
strokes on his way to the fastest hundred in the tournament so far.
With Matthew hayden, Suresh Raina and S.Badrinath chipping in with
handy innings, the Super Kings ran up an imposing 240. Despite a fine
71 from James Hopes, Kings XI, whose batsmen fought hard, were overcome
by the sheer size of the target.
In the second game, the
Delhi Daredevils easily overcame the Rajasthan Royals in a one-sided
encounter. With miserly bowling from Ferveez Maharoof and Glenn McGrath
(who delivered the tournament&ී&෧s first maiden), and helped by
a couple of run-outs, the Royals managed just 129 - which was never
going to be enough in a high-scoring tournament. Calm, composed fifties
from Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan ensured that the target was
overhauled with minimum fuss.
After
a turbo-charged start to their campaign at Bangalore, the Kolkata
Knight Riders return to the legendary Eden Gardens to take on the
Deccan Chargers later today.
With Brendon McCullum blasting
his way to a world record score, the other batsmen in the side hardly
got the chance to get warmed up. However, with a line up that includes
all-time greats such as skipper Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting, and
proven performers such as David Hussey, the Knight Riders will not be
unduly worried on the batting front.
The bowling, too, looks
the part. Ishant Sharma demonstrated pace and movement at Bangalore,
bowling Rahul Dravid, and causing problems all around. Ajit Agarkar
picked up three wickets with his canny swing bowling and clever
variations. Newcomer Ashoke Dinda also impressed at every opportunity.
The
Deccan Chargers will be a formidable opponent, however. Andrew Symonds,
Adam Gilchrist, Herchelle Gibbs, V.V.S.Laxman and Rohit Sharma are
capable of destroying even experienced attacks. Without Shoaib Akthar
and Umar Gul to counter them, it will be left to the experience of
Agarkar to provide the calm if the Chargers get their act going. Ishant
could face the sternest test of his young T20 career.
The
Chargers boast an attack that will be spearheaded by the excellent
Chaminda Vaas, who has bowled his country to countless wins over the
years. R.P.Singh, the best Indian bowler at the world T20, will
probably share the new ball with Vaas. They will be assisted by Nuwan
Zoysa, Scott Styris and Sanjay Bangar in the medium pace department -
so no lack of experience there. Young Pragyan Ojha may get a chance to
show that he is one of the most promising tweakers in India.
A major hurdle the Chargers will have to face will be the Knight Riders official 12th Man
- their legions of vocal, passionate fans, led by Shah Rukh Khan
himself. They will create such an atmosphere at the ground, any team
could be easily intimidated. SRK has promised to put on a show like no
other - the razzle-dazzle will come to Kolkata and transform the game
into a celebration of entertainment and cricket unlike anything seen
before.
The Chargers are a team brimming with ability in all
departments. However, the Knight Riders have the advantage of a big win
under their belt, and will be playing at home. Sparks should fly. Do
not miss it..
Delhi Daredevils hold slight edge against Rajasthan Royals
Delhi Daredevils led by Virender Sehwag takes on Rajasthan Royals
led by Shane Warne in DLF IPL on Saturday at New Delhi. Virender
Sehwag’s fine form with the bat is what Delhi Daredevils count most
apart from the perceived advantage of the home turf at Feroz Shah
Kotla. Delhi Daredevils suffered a setback due to the unavailability of
Pakistan’s Mohammad Asif and Shoaib Malik, due to their international
assignments and hence Sehwag would be under tremendous pressure to cut
loose. In form opener Gautam Gambhir would also have to make his willow
do the talking and giver his skipper Virender Sehwag able assistance.
In the bowling department, Sehwag can afford to relax. Aussie Glen
McGrath and Daniel Vettori are the best bets in any form of the game.
Vettori’s intelligent spin would not be an easy proposition to any
batsmen. McGrath on the other hand is known for his nagging accuracy.
Captain and Coach Shane Warne leads the Rajasthan Royal Challengers
charge against Delhi Daredevils. But Rajasthan Royal Challengers are
also missingsome key players – South African captain Graeme Smith and
his team mate Morkel as well as Pakistan’s Younis Khan.
But Shane Warne is hoping that all rounder Shane Watson will fire from
all cylinders. Shane Watson is known to be a big hitter. Mohammad Kaif
gets a chance to prove his skills with the bat and on the field for
Rajasthan Royals.
Bookies give Delhi Daredevils a slight advantage but one explosive
innings can swing the match as Brendon McCullum showed in Bangalore the
other day.

Dwayne Bravo, the West Indian all rounder, has signed up for the
cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) which started on April 18. Dwayne
Bravo has joined the Mumbai Indians team with Sachin Tendulkar as
captain and Lalchand Rajput as coach. On Sunday, Mumbai Indians will
play its first match against Banglore Royal Challangers.
Bravo joined the team as a replacement for Sri Lankan fast bowler
Lasith Malinga. Malinga is recovering from a knee injury. “we got a
report that his recovery might take a further two to three weeks. So we
decided to have a back-up”, said Mumbai Indians coach Lalchand Rajput
regarding the selection of Bravo.
The 24-year-old Dwayne Bravo will not play in the Carib Challenge
Shield Final against Jamaica which will be held next week. Trinidad and
Tobago team manager Colin Borde supported Dwayne Bravo since he knows
well that the Indian Premier League will benefit the national team.
Every body is excited about Bravo, playing with Sachin, Harbhajan Singh and Shaun Pollock, said Colin Borde.
since Bravo is the first guy from from Trinidad and Tobago to play in the IPL, he must be very proud, said Borde.
Mumbai Indians, the Indian Premier League team owned by Mukesh
Ambani, is much worried about the fitness of their captain Sachin
Tendulkar. Mumbai Indians’ debut match against Royal Challangers
Banglore owned by Vijay Mallya will be held on Sunday.
There are two days remaining to start the match and the decision to
play or not will be taken only just before the match, said Tendulkar.
Harbhajan Singh, off-spinner and vice captain of Mumbai Indians, will lead the team if Tendulkar fails to pass the fitness test.
The remaining 27 playing members of the Mumbai Indians team are
practicing very confidently, even though there are some uncertainties
regarding the fitness of their captain.
Baroda wicket-keeper Pinal Shah, Maharashtra’s Yogesh Takawale and
Western Australia wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi of Western Australia are the
three wicket keepers for Mumbai Indians team. Among the three, it seems
that Luke Ronchi will the be the first choice of Mumbai Indians as a
wicket keeper.
Harbhajan and former South African captain Shaun Pollock are the key
players in the Mumbai Indians team. The 24-year-old Pollock has retired
from international cricket and can be miserly with the ball and
extremely handy lower down with the bat. Harbhajan singh, a crucial
bowler is also good in taking runs and wickets.
For pace and bounce, Mumbai indians have Sri Lankan Dilhara Fernando and Delhi left-arm swing bowler.
After losing the game by 140 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders,
Banglore Royal Challangers would be eager to win handsomely against
Mumbai Indians.
Banglore Royal challangers’ Anil Kumble who did not play in the
inaugural match of IPL would also miss the match against Mumbai Indians
on sunday since he is also not yet fully fit.
Mumbai Indians, the IPL Mumbai franchisee owned by industrialist
Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries, is all set to face the Bangalore
Royal Challengers, the Bangalore franchisee of the DLF IPL owned by
liquor baron Vijay Mallya. Bangalore Royal Challengers have now another
match to regain the lost confidence in the team, which has been lost by
the disappointing victory it had to suffer from the hands of Shah Rukh
Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders.
The Mumbai Wankhede stadium will witness the first home match of the
Mumbai Indians, being led by none other than the icon player of the
team Sachin Tendulkar lock horns with the Bangalore Royal Challengers
led by Rahul Dravid.
The main problem which is still facing the Mumbai Indians is the
fitness of their star batsman Sachin Tendulkar. It’s still not known as
to whether Sachin would play in the inaugural match of the Mumbai
Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Royal Challengers skipper Rahul Dravid would be a worried man after
their disappoint loss against the Knight Riders. The match saw one of
the most exciting batting performances in the history of the game with
Aussie Brendon McCullum blistering his way to a mammoth 158 and thus
handling an easy win to his Knight Riders team. The same thing would
repeat if Rahul Dravid fails a way to send back the Lankan marauder
Sanath Jayasurya, who is bound to open the Mumbai Indians batting
alongside Sachin Tendulkar. Jayasurya is well know for his aggressive
batting and he would surely be a menace for the Royal Challengers if
allowed to settle.
Bangalore Royal Challengers is worried by the absence of two
exciting bowlers Dale Steyn and Nathan Bracken. While Dale Steyn is
playing domestic cricket in South Africa, Aussie Nathan Bracken is
nursing an injury. Without the presence of these two promising bowlers,
the bowling line-up of Bangalore Royal Challengers lacked sharpness
during their match against the Kolkata Knight Riders and this would be
a major concern for the Royal Challengers. They have to find some way
to strengthen their bowling line-up especially, and also the batting
line-up does not look too good with Indian test player Wasim Jaffer
opening the batting.
Just like Mumbai Indians is worried over the fitness of Sachin,
Bangalore Royal Challengers also has a reason to worry - Indian test
captain Anil Kumble’s fitness. It is unlikely that Anil Kumble would be
ready for the match against Mumbai Indians on Sunday.
After their electrifying victory over Vijay Mallya’s Rahil
Dravid-led Bangalore Royal Challengers, the Kolkata Knight Riders is
all set to host their first home match of the DLF IPL in Kolkata on
Sunday. The entire Kolkata city is waking up to the celebrations and
the preparations surrounding their first home match, and that too
against the much hyped Hyderabad Deccan Chargers.
Kolkata Knight Riders, owned by Bollywood badshah Shah RUkh Khan, is
in scintillating form after their mega victory against the Bangalore
Knight Riders. The destructive attitude shown by Brendon McCullum and
henceforth the victory over Bangalore Royal Challengers, is sure to
attract a lot of attention from the Kolkata cricket fans for SUndays’s
match against the mighty Deccan Chargers led by VVS Laxman.
Shah Rukh Khan said, “”At the Eden Gardens, where the matches will
be played, we will exhibit two helmets, an 18-carat gold-plated and a
diamond studded one, to show the other teams that we are the declared
winners. The matches are just child’s play for us.”
SRK continued on the presence of Bollywood beauties at the Eden
Gardens, “”I believe it’s my duty to entertain people whether it’s in
films or in the IPL matches. Though I am not going to dance at the
gallery, I will be present at the Eden (Garden). Rani (Mukherjee),
Bipasha (Basu) and Kareena (Kapoor) have verbally confirmed their
presence. With Kareena, now-a-days, we get a Saif Ali Khan free. So
Saif can also be expected. I will personally try to convince John
(Abraham) and Karan (Johar) to fly down as well.”
Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan’s fans club is also doing their bit of
entertaining. The have arranged a procession from Hatibagan in central
Kolkata to the Eden Gardens. A group of twenty belly dancers will add
colours to the procession.
Arnab Roy, joint secretary of Shah Rukh Khan Fans Club, said, “We
will also decorate the gallery with Knight Riders flags, banners and
festoons. Shah Rukh has promised to help us deck up the gallery.”
Screening of selected matches of Kolkata Knight Riders would be held
at various places across the Kolkata city. Kolkata is wearing a mask of
excitement with Kolkata cricket fans wearing golden black hoardings and
posters of the ‘Knights’ being displayed all across the city.
In the last match of the Kolkataq Knight Riders in Bangalore in
which they demolished the Bangalore ROyal Challengers by a huge margin,
Knight Riders captain Saurav ganguly had promised that the
entertainment would be much larger in Eden Gardens.
After a disapponting start to the tickets sale, its confirmed that
the tickets for the first two Knight Riders matches, on April 20
against Deccan Chargers and April 29 against the Mumbai Indians, are
sold out. Eden Gardens Kolkata will host seven of the total 14 matches
of the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Sachin Tendulkar unlikley to play, in which case Harbhajan Singh will lead Mumbai Indians
Another
battle between two former Indian skippers is on the cards when the
Reliance owned Mumbai Indians captained by Sachin Tendulkar takes on
battered Bangalore Royal Challengers led by Rahul Dravid.
Only
this time, Sachin’s presence is not guaranteed as he is fighting
injuries. A decision on whether or not Sachin will play will be taken
just before the match, but odds are that he will sit out.
But that does not give any breather to Rahul Dravid’s Bangalore Royal Challengers.
Explosive
batsman Sanath Jayasuriya, who can tear apart any bowling attack, will
most certainly open with Robin Uthappa, the Bangalore lad whom Dravid
and Mallya would have rued not to get in the player auction.
The
dazzling Uthappa can be as dangerous or even better than Sanath
Jayasuriya and therein starts the woes of Bangalore Royal Challengers.
Luke
Ronchi is another prolific big hitter that they would have to contend
with in the batting line up. Ronchi’s larger than life exploits in
Australian league had earned him a call from none other than Sachin
Tendulkar, an honour that he will look to repay with the willow at
Wankhade stadium on Sunday.
South
African all-rounder Shaun Pollock comes with a vast array of experience
and the immaculate ability to bowl on the spot. This means that he have
the opportunity to trouble Bangalore Royal Challengers with the bat as
well the ball.
Dilhardo Fernando and Ashish Nehra would ably back Pollock as they try and check the run flow and take wickets.
And
the man who would lead them all in the probable absence of Sachin
Tendulkar is Harbhajan Singh, who was bagged by the Mumbai Indians for
a whopping $850,000. Harbhajan’s experience in volatile, high-profile
contests would come to the fore as Mumbai Indians’ coach Lalchand
Rajput knits his strategy to tame the Bangalore Royal challengers.
The pressure clearly is on Vijay Mallya promoted Bangalore Royal Challengers and its skipper Rahul Dravid.
Lasith
Malinga has been ruled out due to injuries, but Mumbai Indians have
roped in Dwayne Bravo to replace him. The West Indian, however, is not
likely to play the match against Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians’s
second match against Chennai Super Kings is likely to see Bravo taking
the field.
Rahul
Dravid has been at the receiving end of a barrage of criticism for
selecting a team, which resembles more of a test side than even a one
day side, while the requirements of Twenty20 is clearly more unique
than even ODIs. The Bangalore skipper has his own logic and game plan
and a sound cricketing brain, but that needs to be converted into a win
at any cost to settle down in the tournament.
Bangalore
Royal Challengers has a formidable bowling attack, but its is yet to
take off in the absence of Anil Kumble and pace spearhead Dale Steyn.
Shivnaraine
Chanderpaul, fresh from his last over exploits against Sri Lanka, has
arrived but he is unlikely to play in the Mumbai match.
Zaheer
Khan, who would have a better idea about the Wankhade stadium pitch,
would have to ensure that he doesn’t get hit initially.
Many
think a wayward Zaheer’s first over cost India the world cup final
against Australia and also Bangalore Royal Challengers first match
against Kolkata Knight Riders.. But if he gets into the groove, Zaheer
can be menacing.
Misabah-ul-Haq’s
absence is a major issue for Bangalore Royal Challengers, as there
aren’t many who can hit the red cherry out of the ground in the Team.
A
pitch favouring the batsmen makes Bangalore’s Royal Challengers’ task
more difficult. Jacques Kallis will have to cut loose if they are to
put up a decent total. Mark Boucher can be deployed to tackle Harbhajan
Singh as the South African is a able player of spin.
Praveen
Kumar emerged as the best bet for Bangalore Royal Challengers in both
batting and bowling. Praveen Kumar was the only one to reach double
digits in the mach against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Virat Kohli would have another opportunity to show that his Under-19 skills can be elevated to the international level.
Mumbai
Indians are the clear favourites and Bangalore Royal Challengers would
have to come up with some astonishing performance to lift their own
spirits and bury the ghost of Brendon McCullum.
The VVS Lakshman-led Hyderabad team has the most solid batting line-up in DLP IPL Twenty20
After an out-of-the box assault by Brendon McCullum against
Bangalore Royal Challengers in the IPL opening clash, Kolkata Knight
Riders now take on the most solid team on paper in the DLF IPL Twenty20
tournament – Deccan Chargers led by VVS Laxman.
A team which has Andrew Symmonds, Adam Gilchrist, Shahid Afridi, VVS
Laxman, Chaminda Vaas and Scott Styris, Deccan Chargers are the most
formidable side in this competition, at least in paper.
So Sourav Ganguly and his Kolkata Knight Riders have a task cut out.
Take McCullum’s heroics out of the last match and you would find hardly
any difference between the two teams. Sourav wasn’t at his best and
Ponting was too far way from convincing. Of course the bowling
department did well, thanks largely to the insurmountable total put out
by McCullum.
In the event of McCullum getting out early, Kolkata Knight Riders will
have to have a Plan B. Law of averages doesn’t favor McCullum
performing yet another heroic display, but any thing can happen in
Twenty20.
Chris Gayle, who is the top scorer in Twenty20 (internationally
recognised matches; IPL is not recognized officially by ICC as an
international tournament), would not play due to an injury.
So the Kolkata Knight Riders are heavily dependent on Sourav Ganguly himself and Ricky Ponting.
A packed house is expected at Eden Gardens and that puts pressure on
the home team itself, a lot more than Deccan Chargers. That is the
burden of expectations that Sourav Ganguly should deal with. The huge
crowd will also likely to be antagonistic towards Aussies like Andrew
Symonds and to a lesser extent Adam Gilchrist, but these are top
performers who have dealt with crowds through out the world. On the
captaincy front, Sourav Ganguly has a huge benefit of a superb start as
well as the solid backing of strategist and coach John Buchanan and
another master skipper in Ricky Ponting. VVS Laxman on the other hand
does not really fit the bill having lead Rest of India and Hyderabad
teams only, without much to boast about.
Going by the past matches the team winning the toss prefers to bat first and put a solid score on board to defend.
In only one match, Delhi Daredevils vs Rajasthan Royals, have the chasing team won so far. So toss would be vital.
The interesting contest of the match would be between new Indian pace
sensation Ishant Sharma and Australian Andrew Symonds. Remember they
are just out of a keen tussle Down Under.
Hyderabad also would miss a big hitter in Heschelle Gibbs, who is tied with a domestic tournament back home.
The Eden track is set to favour batsmen and since the line-up favours
Deccan Chargers Kolkata Knight Riders would have to have another
McCullum-like performance from some one.
Hyderabad Deccan Chargers have the edge in this contest, bookies say.
Teams:
Deccan Chargers
VVS Laxman, Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Nuwan Zoysa, Rohit Sharma,
Scott Syris, Chamara Silva, Chaminda Vaas, R P Singh, Haldhar Das,
Pragyan Ojha, P Vijay Kumar, Sarvesh Kumar, Arjun Yadav, D Kalyan
Krishna, Y Venugopal Rao.
After corporate giants and Bollywood stars, it is the bookies’ turn to exploit the riches of the cash-rich IPL-based bets.
Taking cues from the strengths and weaknesses of the teams on paper,
Bookies are rooting for Hyderabad based Deccan Challengers as the team to win the coveted tournament.
International betting houses like Ladbrokes have also entered IPL
betting fray and reportedly are making good business, a media report
said.
Chennai Super Kings have emerged as the second contender after it posted a mammoth total against Kings X1.
But Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians are also closely watched.
Rajasthan Royal Challengers are perceived to be the most unlikel team
to win the contest.
Hyderabad Deccan Challengers: 4:1
Chennai Super Kings (Odds not known)
Mohali Kings XI Punjab (13:2)
Mumbai Indians (7:1)
Kolkata Knight Riders (15:2)
Delhi Daredevils (8:1)
Bangalore Royal Challengers (8:1)
Jaipur Rajasthan Royals (12:1)
NB: The standings were before the inaugural matches and may have changed.
Tomorrow is going to be a tough match as Hyderabad is one of the
strongest contenders of the IPL. Let us all wish DADA and his team all
the best for tomorrow's Tie...
ALL THE BEST All Kolkata Knight Riders!
Bangalore:
Looks like there is life after Adam Gilchrist. Brendon McCullum
plundered a staggering, unbeaten 158 (10 fours, 13 sixes) as Kolkata
Knight Riders drubbed the Bangalore Royal Challengers by 140 runs to
clinch the inaugural match of the DLF Indian Premier League at the
Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday.
It was the kind of innings that made the contest one-sided, lopsided.
But it was a day when cricket celebrated batting savagery of the finest
kind.
Bangalore were never in the reckoning. Chasing an improbable 222 after putting Kolkata in they were bundled out for 82.
The hosts opened with Rahul Dravid and Wasim Jaffer, the pair least
likely to get them off to a flier. Soon enough the skipper (Dravid) was
back in the dugout, cleaned up by Ishant Sharma.
It was full and it had pace and sting.. But these attributes do not
necessarily get you Dravid. Today he succumbed to the sinking feeling
of 222.
Virat Kohli perished next, inside-edging Ashok Dinda. Wallowing under
the weight of the number, Bangalore missed out on delicious scoring
opportunities. In trying to hit too hard they failed to make a capital
out of the loose deliveries.
Soon enough followed the procession of wickets. Ajit Agarkar snared
Jacques Kallis & Sourav Ganguly had Mark Boucher. And after
pottering away for a 15-ball six Jaffer relieved both himself and the
team, edging Dinda to Ricky Ponting at slip.
In fact the score sheet looked like a local telephone number not a
single batsman in the top-order could manage double digits. Praveen
Kumar struck a few lusty blows towards the end to stay unbeaten on 18.
How much McCullum dictated the course of the game could be gauged from
the fact that the next highest score was 20. (McCullum belted more than
70 per cent of the runs).
There were some nerves in the beginning, alright. Praveen Kumar, who
opened the attack, exploited the freshness of the turf and got the ball
to jag back cramping McCullum for space.
It was the second over that lit up the evening. Determined to get on
with it McCullum made mincemeat of Zaheer Khan, playing his first game
after a long layoff.
Shuffling just a little he clouted Zaheer for 18 runs (4,4,6,4) between mid-wicket and deep forward square-leg.
The six was a parody though'"an intended flick to square-leg that soared over third man.
Sourav Ganguly, after scratching around initially, got off the blocks
with a top-edged pull off Ashley Noffke. The Queensland quickie too
found himself on a burning deck as McCullum continued the blast of
sixes with a pull over square-leg and a straight hit over mid-off.
With the score reading 61, Bangalore drew first blood. Once again
Ganguly found the death lap of his old nemesis. Zaheer, who has had the
better of him in their recent exchanges, had his man edging to Kallis
at slip.
With McCullum pulverising the attack with disdain, Ricky Ponting
needn't have smashed the stuffing out of the ball. The total swelled to
73 in eight overs, 87 in ten.
Ponting however failed to hit the straps as well he would have liked
although there was his signature shot in between'"a quick-arm pull off
the front foot.
Ponting's dismissal for 20 (failing to clear mid-off) didn't in the
least check the glut of boundaries. McCullum, now seeing the ball like
an air balloon, went berserk racing to his hundred.
On view was everything on his menu "the pulls, the delicate scoops'"as the boundaries grew both in number and distance.
He clouted three sixes off Kumar in the last over notching up his 150
in the process. How Dravid missed Anil Kumble's influence in the
middle-overs.
Rameez Raja best summed up the knock: No way to describe it. All the adjectives would lose their gloss.
Teams:
Bangalore: Wasim Jaffer, Jacques Kallis, Rahul Dravid (capt),
Virat Kohli, Cameron White, B Akhil, Mark Boucher (wk), Zaheer Khan,
Praveen Kumar, Ashley Noffke, Sunil Joshi
Kolkata: Brendon McCullum (wk), Sourav Ganguly (capt), Ricky
Ponting, David Hussey, Debabrata Das, Mohammad Hafeez, Laxmi Ratan
Shukla, Ajit Agarkar, Murali Kartik, Ishant Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha
This is an old story but very relevent to our life - I got it from
one of my friend and thought of sharing with you.
One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well.
The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure
out what to do.
Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be
covered up anyway;
it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him.
They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.
At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly.
Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down.
A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well.
He was astonished at what he saw.
With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing
something amazing.
He would shake it off and take a step up.
As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the
animal,
he would shake it off and take a step up.
Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up
over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!
MORAL :
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt.
The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a
step up.
Each of our troubles is a stepping stone.
We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never
giving up!
Shake it off and take a step up.
Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred - Forgive.
2. Free your mind from worries - Most never happens.
3. Live simply and appreciate what you have.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less from people but more from God.
With best regards,
Subrata
