Daily Journal With Panel Launcher
=================================

I keep a daily journal because my memory is not what it used to be. I have
friends who keep daily journals just because they like to write. I use gedit for
most text-related work and recently learned how to make a special panel launcher
for my journal. I keep my daily journal in a folder called "office" but the
month and year change, so my journal for this month is named 200908.journal or
"yyyymm.journal". Now, making a panel launcher to open a file with gedit is no
big deal but I found that using "gedit /home/user/office/*.journal" in the
Command portion of the launcher doesn't work. I think this is due to the
wildcard, "*", and I will show you how to overcome this problem. Using the month
and year in the panel launcher requires that you edit the launcher every month
and I didn't want to have to do that so I came up with a way to open a file from
a panel launcher regardless of the file name.

I typically reinstall my computer operating system every six months. The reasons
for this are that it cleans out the system and reinstalls require me to be in
front of the computer for a total of about ten minutes so it's painless. Notice
I said "in front of the computer", the system does all of the work for me with
some specially crafted bash scripts.

The Perfect Server - CentOS 4.8 Server x86_64 [ISPConfig 2]

This tutorial shows how to set up a CentOS 4.8 server that offers all services
needed by ISPs and web hosters: Apache web server (SSL-capable), Postfix mail
server with SMTP-AUTH and TLS, BIND DNS server, Proftpd FTP server, MySQL
server, Dovecot POP3/IMAP, Quota, Firewall, etc. This tutorial is written for
the 64-bit version of CentOS 4.8, but should apply to the 32-bit version with
very little modifications as well. In the end you should have a system that

How To Limit CPU Usage Of A Process With cpulimit (Debian/Ubuntu)

This tutorial shows how you can limit the CPU usage of a process with the tool
cpulimit on Debian/Ubuntu. cpulimit is a simple program that attempts to limit
the CPU usage of a process (expressed in percentage, not in cpu time). This is
useful to control batch jobs, when you don't want them to eat too much CPU. It
does not act on the nice value or other scheduling priority stuff, but on the
real CPU usage. Also, it is able to adapt itself to the overall system load,
dynamically and quickly.

Virtual Hosting With PureFTPd And MySQL (Incl. Quota And Bandwidth Management)

OpenLDAP and MySQL as backends for storing virtual domains and users. The
OpenLDAP backend of iRedMail allows you to integrate all kinds of applications.

on CentOS 5.x, passwords will be stored in ldap and you can change the password
through webmail.

How To Get The M-Audio Transit USB Audio Device Working In Ubuntu 9.04 AMD64

Setting Up A High-Availability Load Balancer (With Failover and Session Support)
With HAProxy/Heartbeat On Debian Lenny

This article explains how to set up a two-node load balancer in an
active/passive configuration with HAProxy and heartbeat on Debian Lenny. The
load balancer sits between the user and two (or more) backend Apache web servers
that hold the same content. Not only does the load balancer distribute the
requests to the two backend Apache servers, it also checks the health of the
backend servers. If one of them is down, all requests will automatically be
redirected to the remaining backend server. In addition to that, the two load
balancer nodes monitor each other using heartbeat, and if the master fails, the
slave becomes the master, which means the users will not notice any disruption
of the service. HAProxy is session-aware, which means you can use it with any
web application that makes use of sessions (such as forums, shopping carts,
etc.).

Striping Across Four Storage Nodes With GlusterFS On Debian Lenny
=================================================================

This tutorial shows how to do data striping (segmentation of logically
sequential data, such as a single file, so that segments can be assigned to
multiple physical devices in a round-robin fashion and thus written
concurrently) across four single storage servers (running Debian Lenny) with
GlusterFS. The client system (Debian Lenny as well) will be able to access the
storage as if it was a local filesystem. GlusterFS is a clustered file-system
capable of scaling to several peta-bytes. It aggregates various storage bricks
over Infiniband RDMA or TCP/IP interconnect into one large parallel network file
system. Storage bricks can be made of any commodity hardware such as x86-64
servers with SATA-II RAID and Infiniband HBA.

Monitoring Network Latency With Smokeping (Ubuntu 9.04)
=======================================================

This guide shows how to install and configure Smokeping on Ubuntu 9.04 to
monitor network latency. From the Smokeping web site: "SmokePing is a deluxe
latency measurement tool. It can measure, store and display latency, latency
distribution and packet loss. SmokePing uses RRDtool to maintain a longterm
data-store and to draw pretty graphs, giving up to the minute information on the
state of each network connection."

Anonymous SSH Sessions With TOR

OpenSSH is a great means to protect your connection from being sniffed by
others. However, this isn't always enough. Simply proving that you connected to
a server is enough to get incriminated. Unfortunately, SSH doesn't provide a
native way to obfuscate to whom it connects. Instead, a proxy server can be set
up. And this is where TOR comes to play. This howto covers installing TOR on a
Debian based system and setting up SSH to use TOR.

The movement of Software Freedom started with the establishment of 'The Free Software Foundation (FSF)' in 1984 by MIT hacker Richard M. Stallman.
