Creating Snapshot-Backups with BackerUpper On Ubuntu 9.04
=========================================================
BackerUpper is a tool similar to Apple's TimeMachine. It is intended to create
snapshot-backups of selected directories or even your full hard drive. From the
BackerUpper project page: "Backerupper is a simple program for backing up
selected directories over a local network. Its main intended purpose is backing
up a user's personal data." This article shows how to install and use
BackerUpper on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope).

VBoxHeadless - Running Virtual Machines With VirtualBox 3.0 On A Headless Ubuntu
9.04 Server
================================================================================\
============
This guide explains how you can run virtual machines with Sun VirtualBox 3.0
(released on June 30, 2009) on a headless Ubuntu 9.04 server. Normally you use
the VirtualBox GUI to manage your virtual machines, but a server does not have a
desktop environment. Fortunately, VirtualBox comes with a tool called
VBoxHeadless that allows you to connect to the virtual machines over a remote
desktop connection, so there's no need for the VirtualBox GUI.

Installing VirtualBox 3.0 On A Fedora 11 Desktop
================================================
This tutorial shows how you can install Sun VirtualBox 3.0 (released on June 30,
2009) on a Fedora 11 desktop. With VirtualBox you can create and run guest
operating systems ("virtual machines") such as Linux and Windows under a host
operating system. There are two ways of installing VirtualBox: from precompiled
binaries that are available for some distributions and come under the PUEL
license, and from the sources that are released under the GPL. This article will
show how to set up VirtualBox 3.0 from the precompiled binaries.

solution in less than 2 minutes. Since iRedMail 0.5, it supports Debian 5.0.1
and Ubuntu 8.04 & Ubuntu 9.04 (both i386 and x86_64). iRedMail supports both
OpenLDAP and MySQL as backends for storing virtual domains and users. The
OpenLDAP backend of iRedMail allows you to integrate all kinds of applications.

How To Get The M-Audio Transit USB Audio Device Working In Ubuntu 9.04 AMD64
============================================================================
This tutorial will explain how to get the M-Audio Transit USB audio device
working under Ubuntu 9.04 amd64, although it may work for other versions. The
Transit is usually a Windows only device and is not detected normally because
the firmware has to be loaded in to the device; this is normally done by the
Windows drivers. I've written this tutorial after a long exhaustive search on
how to get it working.

been publishing fresh, engaging material on the topic every week for a decade. This week alone, we're posting Linux features
for both veterans ("Create
an ooRexx build environment on Linux KVM") and relative newcomers ("Avoid
common errors in UNIX and Linux"). Of course, our Linux
zone is overflowing with technical resources for Linux programmers and system administrators, and Linux-related content
regularly appears on our list of most
popular articles and tutorials month after month. Heck, we've even got a new Linux podcast on solar-powered
networking for anyone -- give it a listen.
Looking for something else? Check out the developerWorks
main page, where our top features cover jQuery, Agavi, JavaServer Faces, InfoSphere Warehouse, and more:
Which of these technologies will be around and thriving in another 10 years? Who knows? But whichever ones you're
using, our goal is to make developerWorks the place you'll go to find out about them.
Until next week, John Swanson and the developerWorks editorial team

Setting Up A High-Availability Load Balancer (With Failover and Session Support)
With HAProxy/Heartbeat On Debian Lenny
================================================================================\
=======================================
This article explains how to set up a two-node load balancer in an
active/passive configuration with HAProxy and heartbeat on Debian Lenny. The
load balancer sits between the user and two (or more) backend Apache web servers
that hold the same content. Not only does the load balancer distribute the
requests to the two backend Apache servers, it also checks the health of the
backend servers. If one of them is down, all requests will automatically be
redirected to the remaining backend server. In addition to that, the two load
balancer nodes monitor each other using heartbeat, and if the master fails, the
slave becomes the master, which means the users will not notice any disruption
of the service. HAProxy is session-aware, which means you can use it with any
web application that makes use of sessions (such as forums, shopping carts,
etc.).

Striping Across Four Storage Nodes With GlusterFS On Debian Lenny
=================================================================
This tutorial shows how to do data striping (segmentation of logically
sequential data, such as a single file, so that segments can be assigned to
multiple physical devices in a round-robin fashion and thus written
concurrently) across four single storage servers (running Debian Lenny) with
GlusterFS. The client system (Debian Lenny as well) will be able to access the
storage as if it was a local filesystem. GlusterFS is a clustered file-system
capable of scaling to several peta-bytes. It aggregates various storage bricks
over Infiniband RDMA or TCP/IP interconnect into one large parallel network file
system. Storage bricks can be made of any commodity hardware such as x86-64
servers with SATA-II RAID and Infiniband HBA.

Monitoring Network Latency With Smokeping (Ubuntu 9.04)
=======================================================
This guide shows how to install and configure Smokeping on Ubuntu 9.04 to
monitor network latency. From the Smokeping web site: "SmokePing is a deluxe
latency measurement tool. It can measure, store and display latency, latency
distribution and packet loss. SmokePing uses RRDtool to maintain a longterm
data-store and to draw pretty graphs, giving up to the minute information on the
state of each network connection."

Installing Nginx With PHP5 And MySQL Support On Ubuntu 9.04
===========================================================
Nginx (pronounced "engine x") is a free, open-source, high-performance HTTP
server. Nginx is known for its stability, rich feature set, simple
configuration, and low resource consumption. This tutorial shows how you can
install Nginx on an Ubuntu 9.04 server with PHP5 support (through FastCGI) and
MySQL support.

Installing Moovida Media Center On Ubuntu 9.04
==============================================
This tutorial explains how you can install the Moovida media center on an Ubuntu
9.04 desktop. Moovida is a media center "bringing the best of the internet to
your TV screen. Automatically creating your own digital library you can browse
from your sofa with a remote control. The elegant and easy to use interface
automatically displays artwork and fan art throughtout and gives you access to
movie synopsis and artist info."
You can find the document here:

Anonymous SSH Sessions With TOR
===============================
OpenSSH is a great means to protect your connection from being sniffed by
others. However, this isn't always enough. Simply proving that you connected to
a server is enough to get incriminated. Unfortunately, SSH doesn't provide a
native way to obfuscate to whom it connects. Instead, a proxy server can be set
up. And this is where TOR comes to play. This howto covers installing TOR on a
Debian based system and setting up SSH to use TOR.
You can find the document here:
-------------------------------
http://www.howtoforge.com/anonymous-ssh-sessions-with-tor
How To Defend slowloris DDoS With mod_qos (Apache2 On Debian [Lenny])
=====================================================================
mod_qos gives some fine-grained opportunities to scale the number of used
connections and to defend an attack according to bandwidth limits. Unfortunately
it is only available as source-package and there are many possible settings,
wich might be hard to setup for this special case. So I provide the way that
helped me.

Using ICMP And ICMP6 Service Objects In Firewall Builder
========================================================
This article continues the series of articles on Fireall Builder, a graphical
firewall configuration and management tool that supports many Open Source
firewall platforms as well as Cisco IOS access lists and Cisco ASA (PIX). This
article demonstrates how you can work with ICMP and ICMP6 service objects in
Firewall Builder.

The movement of Software Freedom started with the establishment of 'The Free Software Foundation (FSF)' in 1984 by MIT hacker Richard M. Stallman. The FSF advocates the software user's freedom to study and modify any program as well as redistribute its original or modified copies. FSF focuses on a completely free software system from kernel to applications and it rejects any component of the system which is non-free. FSF released the 'GNU General Public License (GPL)' for the users of 'free software'. As a UNIX like OS, GNU/Linux distributions and the freedom of open source provide an excellent academic and research opportunity. Each application is available in source form and the author as well as the user community can be contacted online.
'GNU/Linux User Group(GLUG) - Meerut' is a GNU/Linux software user's platform to meet, discuss and innovate with other users and developers. GLUG-Meerut is the first gnu.org registered GLUG of entire UP and only the nineteenth one in India. We have helped establish the standard GNU/Linux software as part of engineering curricula in CS & IT. We also help FM Radio station at IIMT Meerut to migrate from properietary software to public domain software 'AUDACITY' released under the 'GNU General Public License (GPL)'.
Now, the efforts of GLUG-Meerut have been appreciated by Dr. Richard Stallman (the founder of 'Software Freedom Movement' from MIT, USA) as "Happy Hacking and thanks for defending the freedom in Meerut" at JNU, New Delhi on 21-12-2008. GLUG-Meerut has invited Dr. Stallman for a visit to Meerut - "The City of Freedom" - the city of 1857 war of Indian Independence which laid the seeds of the rising Indian self reliance culminating into modern Indian nation.
GLUG-Meerut community welcomes all GNU/Linux enthusiasts of Meerut and beyond. We intend to organize various workshops, seminars and conferences for proliferation of GNU/Linux philosophy of software freedom all over the western UP region and beyond. Anyone can freely join GLUG-Meerut on 'groups.google.com/group/glug-meerut'.
The GNU/Linux User Group (GLUG) - Meerut is organizing a special three day (09-01-09 to 11-01-09) GNU/Linux Software Development Workshop 'FOSSTIVAL 2009' at IIMT Engineering College, Meerut. Our target audience is the pre-final and final year CS/IT/MCA students who will bring their GNU/Linux laptops to get hands on training covering the LAMP(Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) spectrum in a rapid round of three days.
GLUG Meerut is associated with various GNU/Linux community enthusiasts of India including ILUG-Delhi, CDAC-NOIDA and NRCFOSS,Chennai. GLUG community is open for all GNU/Linux enthusiasts of Meerut and beyond. We aim to inculcate the spirit of innovation with cooperation as per the ethics of 'Software Freedom Movement' among the students and professionals of the city and beyond. Anyone can freely join GLUG-Meerut on 'groups.google.com/group/glug-meerut'.
The workshop will have sessions on GNU/Linux System Programming & Web Development (ABCD of Web Tech, PHP & Python, Apache, MySQL, Mainstream Web Applications & Projects). There will be special sessions for faculty members introducing to free software packages for system management like Drupal etc. The sessions will be taken by the hackers from wide spectrum of GNU/Linux Community of North India.
We cordially invite you to participate in FOSSTIVAL 2009. The registration is open till 05-01-2009. The registration fees will be Rs. 360 and Rs. 600(includes lodging & food) for local and outstation candidates respectively.
