Dear Members,

I logged into our webpage after almost a year and found that only one
person, Divyajyoti, very conscientiously has been doing the
moderator's work.

We need to congratulate and thank him for his continued service to
our webpage. If I know correctly, it is his final year and he should
be getting ready to move to new pasters soom. We take this
opportunity to wish him all the best.

This, however, also means that we are in need to new moderator who
will be ready and willing to bring some vibrancy to this webpage,
enabling more conversations here, making it a place to share what all
is up in the Law Centre that may be of interest to all of us here at
Law Centre-I.

I realise that all our moderators among the students have passed out
a year ago. With Divyajyoti's departure, the page will get lost if
new blood is not infused.

I look forward to hearing from those of you who are willing to
contribute thier time and imagination to make this webpage a
compulsory stop over for all students at Law Centre-I!

Greetings to our old students, best wishes to those who are passing
out this year and welcome to all the rest.

I am glad to hear from three volunteers within a day!! That to me is a
signal that this webpage is really used by members and I am glad about
it.
I have given moderator privileges to Shilpi Verma, Rajesh and Neeraj

I guess that you three can have mutual discussion and decide what are
the ways in which we may want to revamp or keep it uncluttered and
vibrating.
Welcome to you all.

Read. Write. Win.
THE RAMON MAGSAYSAY STUDENT ESSAY COMPETITION goes to India

The Ramon Magsaysay Student Essay Competition (RMSEC) is on its maiden run in India this year, under the auspices of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) and St. Stephen's College, Delhi. This pilot of the prestigious competition in a South Asian center is a part of the competition's Asian evolution. In 2004, RMSEC also held a limited run in South Korea following initial competitions in the Philippines where the contest started in 2000 as a way for the Magsaysay Award, Asia's premier prize, to establish a connection with the youth. For its launch in India, the competition invites participation from all undergraduate students of St. Stephen's. Participants are invited to write two- to four- page essays in English on the theme, " The Magsaysay Awardee Who Inspires Me Most."

Forty three (43) of the 249 Magsaysay Awardees to date are from India, some of them are alumni of St. Stephen's. Among these awardees are: Arun Shourie (1982 awardee for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts), BG Verghese (1975 awardee for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts), Kiran Bedi (1994 awardee for Government Service), and Aruna Roy (2000 awardee for Community Leadership). For their research, student participants may visit the website, www.rmaf.org.ph. Also available for reference at St. Stephen's are RMAF publications such as: the Book of Citations, which provides an anthology of the official awardees' commendations; Great Men and Women of Asia vols.1 and 2, the first two of nine volumes on Asia's modern-day heroes and heroines; and, Young Pens for Young Minds, a collection of 21 essays written by student winners from the first four years of the RMSEC competition.

Institutional partnerships play a big role in RMSEC in India. The three finalists of RMSEC in India will win personal computer systems provided each by UNICEF, NIIT Global Learning Solutions, and Satyam Computer Services, including hi-speed internet connections from Sify Broadband. A month's internships also await the finalists at New Delhi TV, Hindustan Times, and The Indian Express. The grand prize winner will receive an all expense paid trip to the Philippines from RMAF to witness the conferment of the 2006 Magsaysay awardees in August, attend the awardees' lecture series, and immerse in slices of Philippine life, particularly in Zambales, the home province of the late President Ramon Magsaysay, who inspired the creation of the award.

The Magsaysay Award instills a tradition of "greatness of spirit in selfless service to the peoples of Asia." It is named after the late Filipino leader who championed the cause of democracy and the common man during his time. Since 1957, the award has honored the exemplary lives and work of individuals and organizations across Asia. A Magsaysay Award season is built around August 31, the birth anniversary of the much-loved former president of the Philippines, featuring various public affairs activities highlighted by the conferment of the year's Magsaysay laureates. Through RMSEC, the awardees are held up as role models for all generations especially the youth. In 2008, RMSEC will be held Asia-wide.

For competition mechanics and other information, please contact the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation at (632) 521-3166 to 81 or toll free 1-800-1-888-2390, or through e-mail essay@.... Deadline for submission is on March 1, 2007.

Dear friends

I wish you a happy, eventful and successful new semester!

Students of IIT Kanpur, in its annual event, "India Inspired" invites the
students to "Cut the Tape". *"Cut the Tape"* is a national level essay
competition, which challenges the best and the brightest, to imagine the
shape of society, of what ought to be and how it can be. This year the topic
of the essay is *RTI : Crystal Clear*. The competition is open to the
students of the graduate and post graduate courses. I am copying the details
from their advertisement:

*Competition details*

"Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert
sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by Thee, to ever-widening thought and action –
Into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake."

- Rabindranath Tagore.

India Inspired invites you to "Cut The *Tape*". To the world of answers, To
the stream of reasoning, From the zone of oblivion to the realms of
transparency. This year is not only about dreams but their attainment in
reality. Antaragni brings to you RTI, the right to information, the right to
know, and the right to live.

*Cut the Tape*, a national level essay competition, challenges the best and
the brightest, to imagine the shape of society, of what ought to be and how
it can be. It is your passport to the domain of a corruption-free and
transparent society. We ask you to see and ask, to ask and know, to know and
tell; tell to spread the power of knowledge.

If unanswered questions confuse you, if you long for clarity, if you have a
voice that needs to be heard, surely this competition is for you. Antaragni
challenges you to leap into the unknown to find the new. Come forward and
contribute your thoughts and ideas for the betterment of entire society. If
you have the power of original thought, of clarity and content, of depth and
style; come, envision laterally……Pick up your pen and start.

*RTI : Crystal Clear*

Word Limit: 1500, space: 1.5.
Entries should concentrate on:
1. Why will RTI succeed where others failed.
2. How to create awareness about RTI across various strata of Indian
society.
3. How to provide more teeth to RTI.
4. How to safeguard the fabric of RTI( Especially in the wake of govt.
proposed amendment).

Graduate and post-graduate students can submit their visions of RTI by any
of the following means:
1) .doc or .pdf files to be sent via email.
2) Typed or neatly written, on one side of a blank A4 paper, to be sent
through post.

Prizes
First Prize - Rs. 5000/-
