Re: [sherlock holmes society of india] More on "Scandal in Bohemia"

Dear Sherlockians,
At the outset, let me apologise for pressing the "Send" button more than
once, thus sending my letter many more times than I intended to.I thought my
machine was malfunctioning wheres it was who I was doing so!
Regarding the PsOV(nice abbr.,Sridhar!) sent by Pinaki(that SH later married
Irene Adler) and Sridhar(asking why on earth would he do so or,indeed, would
she)
These are the musings of eager fans like Rex Stout which keep our memories of
the Master alive and give impetus to Clubs like ours to carry on with our
dissections of his life.
There is merit in both PsOV, though my view is that the man was not fond of
the opposite sex at all and if at all he ever married, it wouldn't have been to
an"in your face" woman like IA but to a gentler and feminine specimen!

Can anyone give me one solid reason to support the evidence that Irene Adler
would willingly agree to marry or even have an affair with Holmes? Why would
she do that when she already is married to a person whom she finds to be a
better man than the King of Bohemia himself?!

Let's look at this from her POV. She willingly gave away the photograph
(the only useful object she might have possessed with which she could have
blackmailed the King) once she married her lover. She showed Holmes that she
was as brainy (or shall I say as much of a deductive reasoner) as him. She had
left England to be with her husband. They why would she get in touch with
Holmes at all? I would have thought she'd be happy starting her own family,
kids...et al!

Comments are most welcome.

Dear Sherlockians,

Sorry that there had once again been a
hiatus in my participation. Actually I have had been away for four days at
Siliguri (298 km from my residential town of Balurghat), and on returning, I
was greeted with at least 14 unread mails of the Society. I wish every member
of the Sherlock Holmes Society of India (S.H.S.I) a very happy and prosperous
2006!

Regarding the on-going discussions about
“A Scandal in Bohemia”, I would like to add that Sherlock Holmes has definitely
been shown having had fallen in love with Irene Adler in the story. There might
be a debate on whether it is love or fascination, but there IS something
between them in this story! There is definitely the other theory to ponder upon
– it takes into consideration such points as Holmes’s uncanny seclusion,
self-distancing from women, overt dependence on John Hamish Watson and
addiction to cocaine, but …well…it would be rather controversial (though
according to me literary critics should deal with ALL the aspects of canonical
writings)! Irene Adler, I hope the S.H.S.I members would agree with me, is the
most physical of all the Sherlock Holmes women – she might have well played the
part of the sultry seductress. A startling theory forwarded by Rex Stout is
that Holmes actually married Adler during his
post-Reichenbach hiding and
that Nero Wolfe is their son! I should also mention that in the body of
recent historicist criticism, Jean Leckie, the second wife of Arthur Conan
Doyle, is progressively been seen as a cruel seductress rather than a revered
one who could participate in automatic writing and provide august company to
the Holmes creator.

Further discussions are solicited.
