Re: [sherlock holmes society of india] What shall we discuss?

Hello Holmesians,
The question raised by Jeff is quite a
hilarious one,if i might call it that!!A corny answer
for it would be because we were fortunate enough to
have come across this intruiging series!!
But a far less cornier answer, atleast
speaking for myself, would be that it appeals to my
psyche, which totally agrees with Sherlock Holmes's
thinking, that a mind without food for thought is a
cardinal sin!The series has taught me that there is
plenty of material for an acute observer to keep his
mind occupied with.Even the commonest and most
ordinary events in daily life bear startling
revelations if observed properly.
In short i read Sherlock Holmes
because it has taught me the value of observation and
inference,linked by reasoning.These are qualities
worthh honing into skills of invaluable importance.
What say Holmesians?
Yours sincerely,
FAISAL ABDUL MUJEEB

Hello all,

this is a question I have thought about for years. In
my collection of
books are some in Bengali, Marathi, Sinhala, Chinese,
Japanese,
Korean, Russian, French, Spanish, German, Italian,
Greek, Turkish,
Farsi, Hebrew, Arabic, and many other languages. I
have two books in
Mongolian, and I know of another collector who has one
in Eskimo. I
have often wondered why people living in these
different places, with
different histories and cultures, would be attracted
to these stories
that are so specially British, and 19th century.

In America there may be a sense of nostalgia for a
mythical golden age
of science and reason and order. Many of the books
I've seen treat the
stories in a similar way, almost as a history textbook
explaining life
in Victorian Britain.

I'd like to hear from others, why they read Sherlock
Holmes.

Jeff

Faisal puts it
so aptly, quite a lot of cultural difference between
the two
countries, we do have quite a few things in common
which have been in
existence since the time of Sherlock Holmes.
