Try Amazon.com Good Luck.

Tim <tim.symonds@...> wrote: Interesting note in a
'scrapbook' I have on Sherlock Holmes - a letter
published January 13 1957 in the Sunday Times by Irving Wallace of Los
Angeles remarks that Adrian Conan Doyle (note it was Adrien) stated
forcefully that Sherlock Holmes was modelled on his father, Arthur, and not
Dr Joseph Bell. In other words, Arthur Conan Doyle modelled SH on himself.
Wallace had published a book titled 'The Fabulous Originals' where he
mentioned that Dr Bell was the probable model, and Adrien CD wrote to argue
with this statement. Wallace goes on in the letter to say it was clear from
all the evidence, however, that Dr Bell was the prototype. Wallace ended his
letter to the Sunday Times by the following:

'Even Robert Louis Stevenson, in 1893, after meeting the 'ingenious and very
interesting' Sherlock Holmes in print for the fist time, asked Sir Arthur in
a letter from Samoa: 'Only one thing troubles me. Can this be my old friend
Joe Bell?'

Incidentally, the Radio Times November 1954 contained the following:

'In this month's BBC radio production of 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'
John Gielgud is to play Holmes with Ralph Richardson as Dr. Watson. The part
of Professor Moriarty will be taken by Orson Welles.'

What a cast! Can anyone get hold of that recording!?

Many thanks for this welcome info, Jo Ellen. Incidentally, I believe the correct spelling of ACD's son Adrian was 'Adrian' rather than 'Adrien' which I used...
