Answer: The Adventure of the Retired Colourman, published in the UK in The
Strand Magazine January 1927 and USA in 'Liberty' December 18 1926. The
story is set in the Summer of 1899. Clearly Holmes believes chess players
have scheming minds...

The closest I can think of is Pompey, the draghound in the Missing
Three-Quarter; but am very curious as to the right answer.
