Greetings.
Doyle seems to have made Lestrade and, in fact, all the other
characters apt foils to the brilliance of his conceited Holmes, whose
vanity and strong personality may have rendered him unfit for the
sort of group activity usually required by modern organizations.
Hence Holmes would probably have been best suited to some sort of
individual activity such as management consultant, freelance
journalist, physician or tobacconist, though the last-mentioned is an
endangered species today. Of course he didn't 'live' today; if he
had, he may have considered going to Iraq as an independent
contractor to the Pentagon or freelance interrogator earning upto
$1000 a day.
BTW, if you go to 'South Asian Outlook' at
http://www.southasianoutlook.com/ and click on 'The Community,' on
the left, then 'Window on Canada,' and then 'CEJWC's 26th Annual
Awards Gala a resounding success,' you'll find an account of the June
25 Awards night in Toronto, at which I was honoured.
Regards,
Ashoke
