Hello.
There are several illnesses that embarrass the sufferers and their families.
Among them are insanity, piles or haemhorroids; anything that entails an
inability to defecate on one's own or with control; AIDS and venereal diseases.
In some parts of Asia, I understand the blind are hidden away by their families,
so no one knows of their existence, because it is considered a curse from God.
Years ago, I was told an old acquaintance was dead. However, I was able to track
him down around 2002; apparently he's no longer of sound mind, and some
invaluable friends are looking after him as best they can, since his only living
brother cannot afford to do so.
When mutual old friends enquire, I continue to say he's dead, since that seems
to be what he wanted. I think he's sane enough to have decided he doesn't want
his friends to see him like this today, but rather to remember the good times. I
can understand that.
Around 1975, I proposed marriage to a girl who turned me down. Since we're still
friends, I asked her for a photo this year. She lives in London. Around 57 years
of age now, she has ignored my request. The only reason I can think of is that
she wishes me to remember her as she was then, young and beautiful. A similar
sentiment may have prompted the leprous soldier to avoid his old friend.
