Did I mention a pocket-size reference book on Sherlock Holmes published by
Pocket Essentials Literature in 2001 which others might wish to look for,
though I doubt many copies were printed. I bought mine at a second-hand
book store in Hastings, East Sussex, UK. It is compiled by Mark Campbell
with a foreword by Richard Lancelyn Green. There is a website
www.pocketessentials.com <http://www.pocketessentials.com/>
Each story in the Canon is covered in half a page, with items like 'Quotable
Quote' - for example, under The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire, the
quotable quote is 'This Agency stands flat-footed on the ground, and there
it must remain. The world is big enough for us. No ghosts need apply.'
This is rather witty of Conan Doyle because he spent most of his final years
travelling around to spread the cause of spiritualism!

Let's not forget the Master's words in Copper Beeches. Watson says
something to the effect that rural areas are quite idyllic, and
Holmes holds forth at length about the evil that could lurk in your
average country house. In Holmes' case, I think it was mainly a
question of tapping into the greater information sources available
in the city, and the higher[absolute] incidence of crime among
larger populations. Let's also not forget that London, at the time,
was center of the world, economically and politically. So it's only
natural that he operated out of the city.
Sorry for the long absence, btw, but my interenet access, for
various reasons was[and will continue to be]erratic.
