Hi, Jeff - I sincerely hope (along with the servicemen and their
familes, I'm sure!) that there will be no need to have foreign
troops stationed anywhere, but if the need arises, yes, that's a
splendid name!

Hello, Members -

I think I might have mentioned that I was assisting a group who
want to establish a memorial to actor Jeremy Brett near his
home in Clapham Common.

I'm happy to say that the Lambeth Parks and Greenspace Unit
has agreed to work with the Group to establish a yearly season of
concerts and events in his name in conjunction with their plans
to refurbish the historic Clapham Common Bandstand, as well as
plant rosebushes in the area (the Group is working with a
landscaper recommended by the council to have a particular rose
called "The Jeremy Brett Rose" ).

If you are an admirer of Mr Brett and would like to show your
support (or just to read some lovely sentiments from others
around the globe), I invite you to sign the Group's on-line petition
at:

http://www.petitiononline.com/CCJB2005/

I'm not very good with links, so I hope that works. Thanks, all!

Julia's reference to a new wardrobe makes me wonder whether the Sherlock
Holmes shop I hope the society will one day open in, say, Mumbai could also
rent out Sherlock Holmes' wear, for parties etc.?

Or at the very least have a life-size SH and Dr W where you can stick your
head through for photographs?

Cheers!

Dear Kumar Bhatia,

Have you had an opportunity to view any of the Ronald Howard SH
episodses? If so, as Holmes would say, "what are your findings"?
Do any of them have hints of the Canon in them?

An item of interest; some United States soldiers stationed in Iraq
have formed their own Scion Society (already sanctioned by the
BSI), called "The Baghdad Irregulars". Proof positive that a love of

I think Julia should play Moriarty.

Airport luggage handlers couldn't do it - Health & Safety rules in the UK at
least say they can't life any luggage more than 35 kilos. This rule means
a baggage-handler Moriarty couldn't lift Holmes to throw him over the side
of the Falls...

theideal place for an International Sherlock Holmes Society of

Dear Members,

To add to what Sridhar said, my hometown is a district
HQ by name, lo and behold, "Balaghat", which comes
under Jabalpur Division in Madhya Pradesh.

So much for names, and the memories they evoke.

I have been a silent member of the group (only one
posting done long back), but I do read all the (very
interesting) posts diligently. There was talk going on
about members present in Bangalore meeting up, but
then, nothing ever happened. I am game for such a
meet, may be on a weekend, over a few mugs of the
frothy liquid ..

Any takers?

Regards,
Ravi.

Dear Members, Ms. Higgins,

It's indeed a constant source of surprise to me how the random thoughts that
flit through one's mind often connect names totally unconnected with one
another. With me, it is movies, generally. A casual word read or spoken either
by me or others often reminds me of a dialog or name from some movie or other.

Balurghat is a small municipal town (can I call it that Prof. Roy or is it a
block?) in the Dinajpur district in Bengal in India. It's on the banks of the
Atreyee river.

I think I'll have to amend the 'small', because it seems there is also an
airport in the place!

limits of Jabalpur in the state of Madhya Pradhesh in Central India. There is
this amazing waterfall called "Dhuandhar" that literally translated means "Smoke

Well, Ferguson is characterised as the bluff, honest, but not,
perhaps, very bright sort. It's entirely possible that he could not
comprehend Jacky's emotional needs. The boy was clearly an
intelligent[if malignant] and complex person. Ferguson, through a
simple inability to comprehend Jacky, was not the ideal stepfather.
That doesn't make the man evil just....stupid.

AGreed. He is one of the most vicious characters in the Canon. With
the exception of Moriarty, Moran and Mcginty[did ACD have something
against the letter M?], villains were generally banal in their evil.
Petty, sadistic and, in some way, small-minded. I find this complex
depiction of evil interesting.

> There's old Mr McCarthy, in the "Boscombe Valley Mystery," who

Another example of the not-so-grand villain.

Trevor falls into the other category of villain: a person who has
developed a sense of decency, whatever his past, who is forced by
circumstances into crime. Often, it is a sense of misplaced loyalty or
love that leads such a person to his Heinous Deed. ;) Witness the Duke
of Holderness and, indeed, Mr Holder.

It is possible that Conan Doyle's childhood influenced his view of
parenthood. But what would account for the strong vein of compassion
that runs through so many of these stories?

I agree his own father's afflictions must have had an affect on his storylines,
particularly those that appear after his father's death where family troubles,
infidelities and scandals seem to abound.

Perhaps that thread started with the "killing-off" of Holmes and Moriarty during
the same year as the death of his own father; in a country where he had taken
his wife who was dying of TB (the same condition of the patient who Watson was
called away from Holmes to consult..)

Regarding Leslie Howard; yet another Brett-connection....during their days in
Hollywood in the late 30's, Leslie Howard and his live-in companion, and
Laurence Olivier (Brett's self-confessed mentor) and (his not-yet-wife) Vivien
Leigh were the very closest of friends

Julia Huggins

....................I agree Do you think that any of this reflects on Doyle's
childhood? The
story of his father's afflictions (drink and mental instability),
with his mother's pride, and the still-curious relationship with Dr
Waller, may have colored Doyle's notions of stable family life?

Well, a lot of people whom I know, read the Canon when they were quite
young. It could qualify as juvenile fiction. However, many, many
others continue to enjoy the stories well into their dotage- I'm an
example of that latter set. I don't think the Canon, in my experience,
quite fits into any of the categories that you've mentioned. It is
more like an entree into the genre of detective fiction and, perhaps
for some people, into english literature.

read comes from the US and UK (some from France, Germany, Denmark,
Sweden and a great deal from Japan), and I would like to know how
others approach these stories. Are the juvenile fiction, adult
thrillers, or a picture of Victorian-Edwardian life for historians?

Ronald Howard was the son of the English actor Leslie Howard, who
starred in "Pygmalion" (a film of the play which was the basis for
the musical "My Fair Lady," in the film of which Jeremy Brett
starred - a strange connection, yes?).

I believe all 39 episodes of the 1954-1955 TV series are on
videotape, and will be available on DVD soon. I've seen maybe 25 of
them, and though the stories are often silly (and at 30 minutes each,
very quickly paced), the acting is light and enjoyable. Howard Marion
Crawford, as Dr Watson, is fairly thick but stalwart, much like Nigel
Stock opposite Peter Cushing in the old BBC series.

Sheldon Reynolds, who produced the series, also produced another
series for European distribution in 1983. This series featured
Geoffrey Whitehead and Donald Pickering, and was never shown in the
US. Has anyone in the group seen these?

One favorite series was produced in the Soviet Union in the 1980's.
Vasily Livanov and Vitaly Solomon played Holmes and Watson in five
series. I enjoyed these very much; the sets were superb and the
actors were very warm and human in their roles. There's one wonderful
scene where they look out the window and Holmes makes a series of
deduction based on the appearance of a man walking down the street.
Watson turns away, dejected that he will never have the skills of
Holmes. Holmes then reveals the secret of his method - "I observe
that man, and I deduce that... he is my brother Mycroft!" The two
friends break up with laughter. Throughout the series they talk as
friends, joking, arguing (and even fighting with boxing gloves!). I
recommend these films to anyone interested in Holmes and Watson.

the "first" Holmes for me on screen and radio was Basil Rathbone
prior to his unfortunate cross-over to Universal Studios in the
1940's. Even then, the un-Canonical films were a pleasure to watch,
because it was possible (in my mind) to "see and hear" Holmes in my
mind as I read the stories.

I'd agree on Mr Rucastle being one of the worst - his little son
showing a predisposition towards cruelty and violence. But isn't it
odd that after the sinister description, the child never appears in
story?

And Bob Ferguson, in the "Sussex Vampire" story. How did Master Jacky
become so dangerous? Besides the Oedipal suggestion - Jacky's
affection for his mother turning to violent hatred towards the
stepfather and the new baby - what was in the background that could
cause this?

And don't forget James Windibank in "A Case of Identity." He was
willing to impersonate a younger man, seduce his stepdaughter
(apparently with the connivance of the mother), and abandon her, in
order to retain control over her inheritance.

There's old Mr McCarthy, in the "Boscombe Valley Mystery," who wanted
his son to marry Turner's daughter. That led to Turner murdering
McCarthy.

Mr Holder, in the "Beryl Coronet," was willing to believe his son
guilty of theft and hand him over to the police, while ignoring his
daughter's dalliance with that cad Sir George Burnwell.

Mr Trevor, in the "Gloria Scott," concealed his criminal past from
his son.

The "Reigate Squires" were a father-and-son team of criminals,
burglars and murderers.

The Duke of Holderness, in the "Priory School," allowed one son to
kidnap the other and murder the pursuing schoolmaster. He then paid
off the detectives to hush up the matter.

I can't think of very many good parents in the stories - certainly Mr
Grant Munro in the "Yellow Face," who accepts his wife's past
obligations as his own.

And Colonel Emsworth, in the "Blanched Soldier," who takes in his son
for medical care. There's an interesting bit at the end of the story,
which reflects on some our earlier discussion about Holmes and
religion. When the son's condition is diagnosed as icthyosis, and not
leprosy, Emsworth says:

"Yes, Mr. Holmes, the coincidence is a remarkable one. But is it
coincidence? Are there not subtle forces at work of which we know
little?"

which I think reflects the same philosophy as in the "Veiled Lodger"
and so many of the later stories - we may never understand the
meaning of life, but it is certainly to some benevolent purpose.
Which is also the root of Doyle's Spiritualist faith. But that is for
another discussion

Do you think that any of this reflects on Doyle's childhood? The
story of his father's afflictions (drink and mental instability),
with his mother's pride, and the still-curious relationship with Dr
Waller, may have colored Doyle's notions of stable family life?

I always thought Brett's depiction was the first to show that SH was
a very dark and troubled individual, in addition to being a
genious. Watson's description of Holmes' moods throughout the
stories (lethargic periods of time supplemented by the use of
cocaine and opium, followed by bursts of energy), do make Holmes
sound as if he suffered from bi-polar disorder, as Brett did.

Brett said that one of the most difficult things in portraying
Holmes was trying to get across the "brilliance of the brain" but
playing him with some spirituality. I think he did rather nicely!

Coincidentally, Jonathan Hyde from Granada's "Dying Detective", and
a supporting player in the Rupert Everett episode sachin talked
about, was one of the actors that SH producer June Wyndham Davies
thought would be an excellent Holmes...

.....Sherlock Holmes and Jeremy Brett almost go together. With his
acting, he almost added another dimension to Holmes. Any comments ?

Good Morning, All --

Sumal, I think I went to the Yahoo Groups page and typed in "Sherlock Holmes".
I read a little on each Group that was listed, and your Group interested me (Of
course, if the owner of the company I work for is reading this, I was "engaged
in a research project"!). There are many fine groups out there; the most active
is the one I mentioned, (sponsored by the SH Scion Society, The Nashville
Scholars of the Three Pipe Problem) "Welcome Holmes"; a very scholarly, but fun
Group whose topics have had me running back to ACD's books to re-read the story
being discussed.

   Dear Madam Julia,
Thanks for your reply. You have not told us how you came by this
particular group. I am interested to know because we are keen to
reach out to more Sherlockians out there. By knowing how you know
about us , we can publicize this group more. If you could introduce
us to other groups , our group could become more prominent in
cyberspace
