Dear Julia,
Sometimes we have nothing of appreciable value to contribute and thus the
occasional silence on the SH site.
True, the fact that there are some highly erudite Sherlockians among us, also
plays a role in shying off some of the less knowledgeable ones!
Nevertheless,I can assure you that it is never a lack of courtesy that your
missives may go uncommeneted upon, merely a hesitation of sorts.
It will be pertinent to racall what some famous person said of such
situations:"It is better to remain silent when one is ignorant than to speak
and have the suspicion confirmed" This happened with me recently when I made a
mention of Ian Fleming having once played Watson in a TV series(mistaking it
to be the creator of Bond) only to be told that the Fleming I mentioned was an
Australian and altogether a different person than the famous author.
I assure of my continued and prompt replies, even if found lacking in the
general standard of our other esteemed members.

Dear Julia, your enthusiasm is commendable even if occasionally you seem to
be the actor Jeremy whatshisface's groupie! I enjoy his performances while
thinking they are seriously over the top, especially when flying off into a
(drug-inspired?) reverie.

Given the fact many of us are very busy - I for example am deeply involved
in democracy-building in post-conflict regions such as Iraq and Afghanistan,
and deal every week with the savagery of those unhappy regions - the best
way to participate in any such forum is not so much to ask questions, though
why not, but to provide information others may find interesting and
exciting. Occasionally any of us could do something extra. I live in East
Sussex quite near to where Conan Doyle came eventually to rest (after being
moved after his death from his original grave). It is a useful geographic
location because Doyle was a participant in an immense 'old boys network'
which included Rudyard Kipling at Bateman's, down the lane from where I
live, plus authors like Henry James in Rye. Baldwin and other top politicos
were down in this area often, as an escape from smoggy London.

All the best.

Hello Julia,

you might try www.gryphonbooks.com. Frank Thomas has written several
books featuring Sherlock Holmes, including two published by Gary
Lovisi at the above URL.

Fifty years ago, Frank played the title role in the TV series "Tom
Corbett, Space Cadet."

Thanks, Jeff -- I am going to pass your reply onto them. In the meantime, I
sent an email to Thomas via his publisher on their behalf -- don't know if it
will do any good, but it can't hurt!

I knew Thomas was an actor, but I didn't know he was in "Space Cadet"!

Have you or any other members read the books? If so, can you give feedback?

hello friends, I am glad to be back after a slight illness. I hope you
all have all been well.

Dear Vijay, the actor Ian Fleming is not the author. The actor was
born in 1888 in Australia, and had a long movie career before his
passing in 1969. The author was born in 1908 and lived in England, was
active in British naval intelligence during the war, and retired to
the Bahamas. He died in 1964. There is a very good biography by Andrew
Lycett, which has many interesting stories about the man.

Both "Silver Blaze" and "The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes," which
feature Arthur Wontner and Ian Fleming, survive and are available on DVD.

Jeff

Dear Sh-ians,
I agree wiith Pinaki that there has been a sudden flagging of traffic in our
site! Maybe this is due to the temporary absence of our most intrepid and

Anyway, till we await his return, let me interest you with a lesser known fact:

Fleming, the creator of James Bond.He played him in only one TV episode.

Dear Members,

One of our French SH firends is asking me if I can get some
information about an author called Frank Thomas who wrote
some SH stories in the 80's. "SH and the Sacred Stone"
and "Shelock Holmes and the Folden Bird" were two he
mentioned.

Because of his "poor English" (which seemed very good to me!) he
seemed reluctant to ask himself; my impression though is he is
trying to obtain permission to have the books translated into
French.

Can anyone provide assistance to me?

Dear Sherlockians,

It is really strange but for the last few weeks I have been
noticing a remarkable period of inactivity for the esteemed Sherlockians! What
is the matter? Is it not high time that we began writing again?

Sir Doyle, after the death of his first wife, worked with the Scotland Yard as
a detective for a few weeks. Can any one throw more light on this?

   Yours sincerely,

   Pinaki Roy

Fellow Holmesians...

My apologies -- I only realised my original request for
information was posted in French...here is my (rather poor!)
translation:

"In 1889, Holmes counts 500 investigations with its credit,
this figure will double 2 years later, what thus gives 250
investigations in one year. With 365 days per annum it resout
thus its investigations in less than 36 hours (365/250=1.46).
Then the question that I am posed, is this quite realistic? Or
perhaps I am incorrect in my calcuaations?"

Dear Sherlockians,

Wish you a very hapy Deepavali/Diwali-2005. I am afraid that I
am myself not in a position to answer Ms. Julia's query because I am almost
illiterate as far as French is concerned (though I had to learn German for two
years six months while I was doing my graduation and postgraduation courses at
Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan). I am, however, sure that the other
esteemed members have their answers.

There has been some discussion on a French SH site over the
past few days about Holmes' case-load. The original author
states that Watson's assertion that Holmes completed 500
cases between 1889-1891 is a physical impossibility.

If I may, I will attach what the gentleman said (in French). I
translated it as best I could for myself, and I responded on the
Canonical time-line....

Can members please give their input? The message follows:

"En 1889, Holmes compte 500 enquêtes à son actif, ce chiffre
doublera 2 ans plus tard, ce qui donne donc 250 enquêtes en
une année. Avec 365 jours par an il resout donc ses enquêtes
en moins de 36 heures (365/250=1.46). Alors la question que
je me pose, est-ce bien réaliste? Ou peut-être n'ai je pas bien
compris la chose?"

My thanks,
Julia Huggins
