I agree it requires a concentration of members in one location, such as a
big city. Maybe there are annual festivals where such a musical could be
undertaken by the Society in India, like an 'Off-Broadway' production!
India has an immense musical tradition and it would be extremely
interesting, possibly picked up by 'Bollywood'!

With best wishes.

Tim

Do you think we can mount a musical like that , given the fact that we
are situated all across India?

Dear Sumal

That was a very interesting article, indeed! In fact, I often used to
fantasize (until just a few years back) of meeting up with the Great Detective,
becoming Dr. Watson, or simply even being one of the Baker Street irregulars. To
me Holmes was as real as, say Indiana Jones, but then that was probably because
I was a Harrison Ford fan :D

Still, reading a Sherlock Holmes adventure is as satisfying as an oft-repeated
reading of the Lord of the Rings.

Dear Sherlockians,

Wishing u all a very happy, prosperous, and satisfactory New Year 2006 and may
our contributions number much more than the expected 10 per month (and I mean
all of us, including myself).

A Scandal in Bohemia, the first adventure in my collection was a trifle
disappointing when I read it the first time (I was 14 then). I'd read quite a
few others before I actually read this and I had got the feeling that the "man
must be slipping" (read growing old) ... to be outfoxed by, of all things, a
Woman?!!!

I know better now. Maybe I've mellowed with age (LOL).

I beg to differ though from the POV of Sumal that the Master was in love with
Irene Adler. I believe that like happens to the best of us who're experts in
some field or another, there always comes somebody who's one step ahead of us.
In such cases, one of two things can happen. One can rant and rave or one can
smile and swallow the bile of bitterness and politely congratulate the better
peer. Holmes chose the latter better option. If given a chance, he would no
doubt have wanted to have another go at this "competitor".

I would love to know what the other members think about this.

   Sridhar
PS: I'm not resolving anything as it is most likely that I'll break it pretty
soon. I just hope I continue contributing at least as much as expected (a volte
face, I know, but then, I'm a Libran!)

I think the nearest crime one could accuse The Woman is of possible
intention to blackmail the Crown Prince. It is also an important tale
because it reveals a less known side of Sherlock Holmes - that of a man
susceptible to lesser emotions like Love

Dear Sherlockians,
I think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a tough disciplinarian. This
attitude was reflective of the Victorian era where a father was a Pater
familias, a figure who was to be revered and not adored. The underlying
philosophy behind the adage, " Spare the rod and spoil the child " is
precise summation of the attitude of parents towards their children.
The public school culture of Eton, Harrow and Rugby also refect that
Victorian attitude . The entire idea behind sending Mary away might be
to make her mentally tough and not become a delicate wallflower.
This is my personal opinion . Comments are as always welcome!

Dear Sherlockians,

I wholeheartedly support Sumal’s suggestion that the month of January
should begin with discussions on “A Scandal in Bohemia”. I, however, can hardly
wait! I also register my consent at Tim’s proposal that the Sherlock Holmes
Society of India (SHSI) should dramatise some of Arthur Conan Doyle’s short
stories at places like Kolkata. The other Sherlockians are also being requested
to e-mail their opinions regarding this.

Please give me permission to float on the internet some of my
views and data on “A Scandal in Bohemia”. The short story, first published in
the July 1891 -edition of ‘The Strand Magazine’, is actually the third Holmes
story to be written. The American radio adaptation of the story by Denis Green
and Anthony Boucher was aired between September 1945 and May 1946, with Basil
Rathbone voicing for the celebrated detective and Nigel Bruce speaking as Doctor
John Hamish Watson. The English television adaptation by C.A. Lejeune, of which
Ian Atkins was the producer, with Alan Wheatley as Holmes, Raymond Francis as
Watson, Alan Judd as the King of Bohemia, Olga Edwards as Irene Adler and John
Stevens as Godfrey Norton, was beamed on 27 October 1951. There have had been
several other adaptations of the story as well.

Different Sherlockian critics have tried to
identify real identity of the places and people referred to in Doyle’s “fifth of
the twelve best short stories” (qtd. in Baring-Gould, William S. “The Annotated
Sherlock Holmes - I”. New York: Clarkson N. Potter, 1967. pp. 367). “Eglow” and
“Eglonitz” have no geographical existence; however, Egria or Eger is a town in
Bohemia, not far from Carlsbad. Although the real king of Bohemia at the time of
the “Scandal” was Frantz Josef von Hapsburg (b. 1830), Jay Finley Christ (in
“Problems in ‘A Scandal in Bohemia’”, THE BAKER STREET GASOGENE, VOL. 1 NO. 2
1961) and Julian Woolf (in “The Adventuress of Sherlock Holmes: Some
Observations upon the Identification of Irene”, THE BAKER STREET JOURNAL, VOL.
VII, NO. 1, NEW SERIES, JANUARY 1957) opine that his only son Grand Duke Rudolf
(1858-1889) is being referred to. In “Another Incubus in the Saddle” (collected
in EXPLORING SHERLOCK HOLMES), John B. Wolf has suggested
Crown Prince Wilhelm von Hohenzollern of Prussia (b. 1859), the later Wilhelm
II of Germany, while Edgar W. Smith thinks that Edward Albert (the later King
Edward VII of England) (b. 1841) is the mercurial and impulsive monarch. Irene
Adler could be the famous American opera singer with whom Wilhelm II had a
torrid and erotic affair; Julian Woolf thinks that Adler is actually the
celebrated actress Lily Langtry (b. 1852). Irene Adler was also the professional
name taken by Clara Stephens of Trenton, New Jersey, the aunt of James
Montgomery. The church where Norton and Adler get married is, according to T.L.A
Daintith, the St. Agnes’s Church, Cricklewood, off the Edgware Road, London.

I would request the other esteemed Sherlockians to supply us with more data on
“A Scandal in Bohemia”.

   Thanking you,

   Yours sincerely,

   (Pinaki Roy)

Good idea. There's no doubt Holmes has been described as something of a
misogynist, though in the instance of Irene Adler he seems to have held such
respect for her mental powers he may be termed to have fallen in love with
this quite mysterious figure.

Hello and congratulations on your successful launch
of the Sherlock Holmes Society of India and of your
Sherlockian mail-list!

Sumal was kind enough to join and send
a message to our own yahoo group -- WelcomeHolmes.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WelcomeHolmes/

As moderator of the group I would like to extend
a sincere and respectful invitation to any member
of this group to also join the WelcomeHolmes group.
We discuss the cases of Sherlock Holmes and have
read and talked about one-third of the sixty cases
on this tour of the canon. We'll continue this format
until all of Dr Watson's reports are read and discussed
with the primary goal of having a lot of fun on the way!
I think we are a friendly group that enjoys finding out
about the Sherlockian interests of others.

Perhaps as fans of the great detective we can
help each other grow and share in the pleasures
of reading about those adventures that originate
on Baker Street.

I hope you'll consider my invitation and again
congratulations on your society!

Cordially,

Dear Sherlockians,
Simon Templar was a fictional character in a long-running series of
books by Leslie Charteris entitled The Saint published between 1928
and 1963, Templar is known as The Saint due to his initials (ST), and
also because of his tendency to do good deeds, despite his nefarious
reputation. He sometimes uses the nom de guerre Sebastian Tombs and
also calls himself by sundry other names, all with the initials S.T.,
such as Sullivan Titwillow and Sugarman Treacle - the Saint has a
boyish sense of humour. He frequently leaves a 'calling card' at the
scenes of his 'crimes', consisting of a stick drawing of a man with a
halo, which is the logo of both the book series and the later 1960s
TV series.
Let us now get on with Holmes

Dear SHians

I agree with Sumal. But for all his seemingly atheistic beliefs, aren't there
instances where he is able to quote the Bible (chapter and verse)? I'm not
certain, but I think one such instance is somewhere at the end of the Adv. of
the Blue Carbuncle. I'm certain though that it was one of those cases in which
he was the judge and jury and allowed the "criminal" to escape or at least take
his chances by running away.

I can only quote some references from the Canon in which the Master
obliquely mentions religion,
"Is not all life pathetic and futile? Is not his story a microcosm
of the whole? We reach. We grasp. And what is left in our hands at
the end? A shadow. Or worse than a shadow - misery". ( RETIRED
COLOURMAN)

"Why does fate play such tricks with poor, helpless worms? I never
hear of such a case as this that I do not think of Baxter's words,
and say, "There, but for the grace of God, goes Sherlock Holmes."
(BOSCOMBE VALLEY)

"What object is served by this circle of misery and violence and
fear? It must tend to some end, or else our universe is ruled by
chance, which is unthinkable. But what end? There is the great
standing perennial problem to which human reason is as far from an
answer as ever". (CARDBOARD BOX) .

I think Holmes being a rational man did not believe in religion, he
would not have been a practicing Christian . I am sure about
that. However , the Victorian era was a era where religious beliefs
were not seriously challenged. Darwin's theory was just about getting
reviled before gaining acceptance in the early 20 Th century
