Super quiz, Anand.

Though it's been years since I read the canon I'm happy to have
scored 50%. Recollecting the stories based on the answers felt very
good after all these years.

Hello Anand

You are very much welcome here. And yes, we too are 101%
sherlockians. We hope to see you actively participating in our
discussions.
As for your other field of expertise...I'm not much of a software
buff. I use my comp to interact thru the net and typing out my
pastiches or fanfics. That's as far as my horizons extend in the
computer world...but seeing that I'm on the net almost 24 hrs...you
can imagine how far my horizons in other parallel worlds extend. lol.
My interests include reading (profusely), writing, video shooting and
theatre. and my obsessions are Sherlock Holmes, Lord of the Rings and
Harry Potter...

Enough about me...Waiting to hear your opinions soon.

Hi Mihir

Thanks for the information. It is a pity that the movie channels
of these days, i.e popular ones like HBO and Star Movies tend to
air hollywood stuff which is the favorite of the masses.

Hallmark is one channel that caters to the audience who likes
more classical movies. But even they dont air Holmes movies.

I have gone about many places in bangalore looking for Holmes
VCDs but all I got was some cartoons, quite amateurish ones depicting
Watson as a comic character!

If anyone in this group has a good collection of VCDs I would
like to know about it.

Thanks folks,

-Anand

Hi Sherlockians!

I am Anand Pillai from Bangalore. I joined this society today and
would like to contribute something original as a true Sherlockian.

A few details about me. I am a software engineer by profession, and
an IIT alumni. I am active in many internet groups, software forums,
programming language discussions and develop my own software in free
time. I have authored and hosted a few popular webpages on programming
in the internet and written some popular software.

Apart from all that, the reason why I am here. I am a 101% original
sherlockian. I have read the whole canon countless times, participated
in Sherlock Holmes debates, Quizzes etc. I carry most of the
characters and events in the canon inside my head. I have written
parodies on Sherlock Holmes and authored a few quizzes on some
internet sites on the master.

I hope to start a Sherlock Holmes discussion blog quite soon
as a part of my activities. I hope to get some help from enterprising
members here, the true Sherlockians.

Here is a link to one of my programming pages. Nothing to do
with Sherlock Holmes, but gives an idea about me.

   http://members.lycos.co.uk/anandpillai

I would like to take part in discussions here. Eager members
are welcome to write to me about the Canon, especially some of
the stories connected with actual events & societies like "The
Five Orange Pips".

Cheers!

I'm afraid i dont get the REN TV channel. But yes, I did see
the "Young Sherlock Holmes" a couple of times. I also have the novel
version of the story. But as for DDI, I guess I missed all of the
movies. The main reason being that they don't advertise. Some very
good classics like Citizen Kane have been shown on DD but no one
knows about it.

Dear Friends,
Yesterday (18th August 2003) and today (19th August 2003) I got an opportunity
of watching THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES ( originally made in English but

telecasted a film " The Real Sherlock Holmes" a film based on the life of Dr

HBO had shown Steven Spielberg " Young Sherlock Holmes" twice in last ten days.
I personally feel the other TV Channels in India like AXN, Star Movies , Zee MGM
an which show English Films should also show Sherlock Holmes Movies.

Even Govt of India's Channel Doodarshan India (DDI) (most widely watched channel
in India) have telecasted movies like SIGN OF FOUR, HOUND OF BASKERVILLES and
serials like " ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES " and " RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES"
in the past but have stopped showing those classics and keep Sherlockians like

You know you are a Sherlockian when:

  10. When talking to people, you don't make eye contact because
you're too busy observing the mud splashes on their shoes.

9. Y ou put a $500 bust of yourself by the window, and crouch nearby,
waiting for a bullet to go through it at any moment.

8. Y ou can easily identify tyres by their tracks, but don't even
remember your own phone number.

7. E ven when you have e-mail facility, you prefer sending telegrams
to your friends.

6. W ho cares if your local policeman's name is Tom? You'll call him
Lestrade. Anyway, the two names sound quite similar!

5. A ll your newspapers are in tatters, because you insist on pasting
every bit of information in your scrap-book. (Hmm, something looks
quite fishy in that wiener ad. Well, that starts the 'W' section).

4. Y our friends are quite irritated at your habit of
saying 'Elementary'in reply to every question- including one by a
stranger as to which school you went to!

3. E very morning you plague your postman with questions because
you're dead sure that he's the evil leader of a terrorist group.
('Come, come, old chap, I know you call yourself John Smith and all
that rot, but what do your friends call you? The Silver Stinger?')

2. Y ou are quite sure that the numbers on report cards are not just
numerical grades, but are part of a deeper inner code. Thus, you eye
every teacher with suspicion too.

1. Y ou haven't laughed at even one of these 'Top Ten' items, because
each and every one of the actions seem perfectly normal to you.
("Well, I do this everyday, and I don't see anything wrong in it!")

Holmes certainly smoked "his old black pipe", and like all men of
that time and place wore a hat, but the types in each case were never
specified. The calabash pipe came from stage actor William Gillette
who selected it as the least likely to detract from his famous
profile.

Folks,

HEre's what turned up in my research.
"The deerstalker came from Holmes's original illustrator, Sidney
Paget, who habitually wore one: the hat's association with hunting
made it a natural for manhunter Holmes. Sidney, by the way, was
*not* the Paget that the Strand Magazine (in which many of the Holmes
short stories first appeared) had wanted for the Holmes stories: they
meant to contact his brother Walter to do the illustrations, but
addressed the letter to Sidney by mistake. Sidney's depiction of
Doyle's detective proved very popular, though, and the Strand never
felt like changing thereafter. Walter still got in on it, though: he
sat for his brother as the model for Holmes!

But I'm really sorry, the Indian's name is not mentioned in the essay.

And sorry for posting so late. I was out of townn. It was the opening
show of the play and I was the head of the backstage. The trip was
both good and bad. We had a fun time and the show was a hit but I
fell from the 5 ft high stage and broke my foot. Ahh . Anyway

1. Silver Blaze - While 'the dog that did not bark' is the more famous
reference from this story, what I found much more powerful was the
understated observation of the cow which could trot, canter and gallop

There's another great one - Yellow Face is the name, I think - where,
towards the end, Holmes' client tells his wife that "I may not be a good man
but I am a better one than you give me credit for" and it ends with Holmes
telling JW that if he ever (again) becomes overconfident, Watson should
whisper [XYZ] (the name of the village) to him.

2. I never counted Moriarty to be particularly evil - he seemed to be more
of an intellectual equal of Holmes and given to criminal activities for
reasons of money and/or power. The real evil villains surface more, I think,
in the stories set in the rural world - I'm thinking of good folks like the
snake owner in "Speckled Band" or Mr. Roylott (of Copper Beaches?) etc.
There are quite a few more of the ilk.

As I keep saying, must find time to read them again!

Nikhil

dear sumal, thanks for the "wake-up" call.
a) which according to you is the best story in the canon.
b) who is the most evil villain in the canon ( not counting prof. moriarty )

dear friends,
here's some interesting trivia
it was really sidney pagets own favoirite headgear , a deerstalker, that he
showed, Holmes wearing, in his illustrations for the Sign of Four,
Silver Blaze and Boscombe Valley Mystery.
But I doubt if ACD ever mentioned anywhere in the canon ,Holmes wearing (
or even possessing ) one .
Am I right ?

Hi! Friends,
India got the opportunity of publishing two pastiches " Mandala of SH" and "
Parson's Parrot" in last 2 years . Can any body of tell me about any new
pastiche published by an Indian Publisher?
Please also tell me if any SH type character has been created by any Indian
Writer in the Indian Environment. I have only read the translated (from
Bengali to English) adventures of Feluda and Byomkesh Bakshi.

Does anyone know what GDS is?? It is The Great Detective Syndrome.
After the publication of the crime solving adventures of the Master
people all over the world wanted to be just like him. Many detectives
adopted his methods and many times even his name "sherlock holmes"
and began practicing. Most of them were successful too. According to
Jess Nevins they were all sufferers of GDS. Check out his essay at
this link. It is very interesting. What was most interesting was to
know that one of these GDS sufferers was an Indian.

I just saw the movie Young Sherlock Holmes by Spielberg and Chris
Columbus on HBO yesterday. Though I didn't quite like the story..it
was a wonderful presentation. Spielberg did his job.
