Dear Sri and Holmesians,
Sri, I think you missed out a great opportunity, I guess to meet a
great Sherlockian.
Nevertheless, the address of the SHS of Madras was 33, Easr Mada
Street, T. Nagar. Madras - 600017.
I had corresponded with them on a few occassions. Must be around 1993-
94, after which the correspendence come to an abrupt end since there
were no replies forthcoming . It is a pity about that. I still retain
copies of that letters though DR Krishnaswamy never revealed his
identity to me. He replied his letters as Sherlock Holmes,no less.
The Hindu had carried a feature on Dr Krishnaswamy some three -four
years back. Let me see whether a google serach would yield any results.

It could be a good idea to have the 'mother' SH society of India form
localised groups (viz Madras) because they would send interesting info and
ideas to the centre and could meet up with other in person. Incidentally,
some years ago when I helped form an informal group on a completely
different subject we found our still-quite-small numbers enabled us to get
some surprising benefits, especially for travel. For example I seem to
remember we could get much cheaper air-fares if we had a certain number in
the group, but whether that was 12 or 25 or whatever I don't recall. Maybe
the Society's India members could get a package to visit London and follow
the Master Sleuth's ghost around?

I think it was my mom who told me about this society, saying she had seen a
board quite near the Kapaleshwar Temple (quite close to our former
residence) a while back..."a while back" unfortunately meaning more than a
year. By the time I went to enquire, the board, along with the Society had
disappeared! This was back during 1989-1990, I guess.

Dear Tim and Holmesians,
I remember reading " The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes " written By
Adrian Conan Doyle. I recall it being a very tedious read. Ergo ,
which means he was merely living of his father's reputation.

Dear Naren and Holmesians,
They have been advertising the Adventure of Sherlock Holmes for some
time without actually telecating them. Let us see that they do it this
time. We had discussed this programme on this society extensively.

Hello,

the 1954 - 1955 BBC radio series survives, 16 episodes in all. They are
readily available in mp3 format from vendors all over the internet. There
used to be dozens of web sites that offered radio downloads for free, but
they are not so common now. Here's one that survives:
http://www.angelfire.com/mi/lifespring/.

Also see Douglas Johnston's web site, "A Study in Sherlock," at
http://www.astudyinsherlock.net/cat/audio/radio/ for more radio shows.

If your ISP gives you access to Usenet News, look in the discussion groups
such as alt.binaries.radio.oldtime for free downloads.

Orson Welles also played Sherlock Holmes. His Mercury Theater of the Air
played a production of Gillette's famous play in 1938, and this recording
also survives.

I know of some radio broadcasts from Germany, France and Norway. Do any of
the members know of radio or TV productions from India?

Jeff

Incidentally, the Radio Times November 1954 contained the following:

'In this month's BBC radio production of 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'
John Gielgud is to play Holmes with Ralph Richardson as Dr. Watson. The part
of Professor Moriarty will be taken by Orson Welles.'

What a cast! Can anyone get hold of that recording!?

Dear Holmesians,
November seems to be a dry month for the society. There is hardly any
activity going out there. Let us make a move on.

Hi Vidya, Kamalesh and Holmesians,
A warm welocme to all our new members to the No 1 Sherlock Holmes
Society in Asia.
Please introduce yourselves and keep posting on all matter canonical.
Coming to my next point, I am keen to know whether other Sherlockian
Societies are aware of our existence.
I have frequently submitted our society's links to other fraternal
societies., but I really do not know where we stand vis a vis other
Societies in terms of quality and activity.
Can members who have some knowledge about other societies speak up?

Dear Holmesians,
  The answer is Mr.Farquhar.

"Shortly after my marriage I had bought a connection in the Paddington
district. Old Mr. Farquhar, from whom I purchased it, had at one time
an excellent general practice; but his age, and an affliction of the
nature of St. Vitus's dance from which he suffered, had very much
thinned it"

The setting is "The Adventure of the Stock Broker's clerk"

yes. I agree with with Nikhil. It was the Norwood Builder..

And Thanks Sridhar!!!

And hey! thats great! Lots of Plum fans too! As it is, PGW himself was a
great fan of SH... So, it's so cool that many of ACD's fans are PGW fans
too!

And Tim, Are you back yet from the trip to Crowborough?

Dear Tim, Nikhil, and other SHians.

Or was it the adventure of "the Woman" (Irene Adler), A Scandal in Bohemia?

Vidya, you are most welcome. Please tell us more about yourself. That you are
a fan of Wodehouse too makes you an important member since there are quite a few
in the Society who, like me, love the works of Plum, "the performing flea!"

Tell me, as it doesn't spring to my mind right now, which was the story
where Holmes arranged to 'smoke out' the object he was seeking, because he
realised the protagonist would rush back into the (fake) fire to retrieve
this object?

Hello Tim!

My favourite out of the short stories is The Greek Interpreter simply for
the presence of Mycroft. Being a Wodehouse fan too, it tickles me that Mike
from "Spring Fever" is "Mycroft. Like Sherlock Holmes' brother!!"

And A Study in Scarlett is another absolute favourite. The passion of
Holmes, the introduction of the faithful Chronicler and "The ring man! the
ring!!" make it my absolute favourite!!

The online newsletter is such a great idea!

looking forward to the pics of the ACD memorial and stuff!!

Vidya.

It would be really interesting if when new members join, they might be asked
which of the canon is their favourite story, and what in particular about
it. Eventually the Society could compile its own on-line newsletter,
perhaps every quarter, and include some material of this sort?

Incidentally, I'm still intending to go to Crowborough, the town in Sussex
where I believe ACD was finally buried. If there's any monument or other
memorabilia I'll take a photo and send it to the Society.

Tim
