   Dear Holmesians,
We had a discussion on the existence of 221B. Many of us may not be
able to go there but we can always visit the Sherlock Holmes
   Restaurant in Bombay.

Dear Holmesians and Sri,
You might recall that we had some interesting discussions on the
Sherlock Holmes Society of Madras, now sadly defunct. I had happened
to find a link to the news story published in Hindu which I had
earlier posated in the society . So for those who had missed it out
the firdt time , here it goes,

http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/2001/10/29/stories/13291285.htm.

I should say that Dr Krishna murthi looks slightly odd wearing the
deerstalker cap , a trench coat and a sandal.

Dear Holmesians and Tim,
It would not be as difficult a task as we think it to be. Remember,
HRF Keating had created Inspector Ghote series of books set in Bombay
without ever setting foot in India, what to speak of Bombay.
I think with the help of a map of a city , it must be fairly possible
to create an impression of being familiar with a city one has never
visited at all.

Dear Holmesians,
I happened to watch SH on History Channel last tuesday. They were
showing " The Solitary Cyclist". Surprisingly , though the show was
faithful to the text, towards the end of the programme , they showed
SH closing a chest of drawers which had a syringe kept in it. As far
as I remember, SH does not drug himself in that adventure. It must be
a case of artistic liberty taken by the producer. What say you,
Holmesians.

Talking about animals, I guess most of them have the "homing instinct",
especially the birds (homing pigeons?!). One sense more than us humans.

quick answer is, he didn't! I think it was Owen Edwards, in his excellent
biography of ACD "The Quest for Sherlock Holmes: A Biographical Study of
Arthur Conan Doyle," who shows that Doyle based his descriptions of London
streets on his memories of Edinburgh.

Holmes shows an excellent sense of location - in "The Sign of Four," while
being driven in a closed carriage to visit the home of Mr Sholto, Holmes is
able to recite the street names as they pass, based on his memory of the
twists and turns.

Best wishes,
Jeff

Dear Sherlockians:

As far as I know - and I have only been there once - it was always a real
address. I could be mistaken, though. What I do remember thinking is that
the memorabilia shop is exactly where Holmes would've had apprehended
Colonol Sebastian Moran (the old *shikari* or the second most dangerous man
in London) in The Adventure of the Empty House.

I haven't passed 221b Baker Street recently but there used to be a shop
right opposite it with all sorts of Sherlock Holmes' 'memorabilia' for sale
- deer-stalkers for example.
The front of 221b Baker Street is unexceptional to the eye and I often found
people from overseas staring at their maps in the vicinity, trying to figure
out just where the building is. 221b of course was a number that did not
exist.

Hey!

A friend if mine just returned from London and bought me a fridge magnet
from the SH Museum at 221B, Baker Street. And she got me a visiting card
that says "Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective". And it has a signature on
it! So cool!! I love it!

I just had to tell somebody....

Cheers!
Vidya.

I have noticed that this group was afflicted for a short while by
the ever growing internet blight (adolescent children on computers).
Really nothing much can be done because as long as the net is open
to all, we get all these people that don't contribute anything
serious, they need to go elsewhere for their captive audience. My
instinct says this is a phenominae highly similiar to that of some
ham radio operators of early years. Command over distance and
anyonymous grandstanding, a hallmark of a disturbed personality. It
is almost to the point of...... a study like the Great Detective
would have displayed in examining an interesting specimen. In this
case someone posting childish or desperate links in an effort to
make money...or be noticed...or to be heard.........actually an
attempted escape from reality to the temporary security of the ether
realms of a nebulous and tentative imaginary world. Sort of the
Walter Mitty effect.

I had greatly enjoyed the previous hints and guess for the stories
of the Canon. I was a bit chagrined mine was not that interesting. I
can only say that it was one of the few stories written in the first
person by Holmes and stimulated my further research into Naval
Architecture of the 1890 era.
I will cease and desist in my posting of such dull inclusions,
leaving this realm to the youthful and energetic.

Many many posts back, I had questioned the general membership if
there was any interest in producing a limited Podcast radio show of
Sherlock Holmes, a short story written for the net and by and for
the SHSI. There are several sites that have free downloads of the
old radio shows with famous actors. As we progress in this group,
the bar is always raised and we each grow and progress in some way.

No more rambles for now....

I have said too much.

Always....

James27Word

P.S. I have since vacated my Hollywood apartment and am now back in
Las Vegas for those who have asked.........my script did not sell,
not even an option.............oh well

Just thinking, ACD was not a Londoner and may not have visited London from
faraway Scotland until he was an adult. How did he set about making sure
the street directions for Holmes and Watson were correct (assuming they were
correct)? Did Holmes ever refer to a street guide? I believe he referred
to the famous railway timetables which he had learnt by heart.

I'm sure most members are aware by now that the "Adventures of

the History Channel. Here is an article that appeared in the press.
Perhaps one of the members might contact the newspaper with
information of the society?

Hi Group,

This is Ravi Rao, and I (re)joined the group just now. In my earlier
avataar, I used to be a member of this group, and used to identify
myself as drummerbonham. Strangely, Yahoo chucked my email id out, and
I ceased to get messages from the group .. it got lonely in the wild
.. and now it feels great to be back again.

Looking forward to read and digest all the interesting messages posted
by the members, especially Dr. Pinaki, Sumal et al

BTW, for members in India, do watch "The History Channel" on the 12th
of December at 9 PM .. Mr. Jeremy Brett is back to play the character
he personified to a T .. the inimitable "Sherlock Holmes"

Happy viewing ..

Cheers,
Ravi.

Dear Srinath and Holmesians,
Welcome aboard. Please introduce yourself and tell us how you came to
know about this Society. Let us hope History Channel keeps its word
and actually telecast the series. Happy viewing!

Dear Tim and Holmesians,
Yes, That is a great idea. It is my fervent hope that with the efflux
of time, that will happen. In fact, I tried to start a society where I
live with little success. You see, it is very difficult to track like
minded persons unless there is a organisation existing. The Internet
is one place where it is easy to find fellow Sherlockians.

Dear Sri and Holmesians,
Sri, I think you missed out a great opportunity, I guess to meet a
great Sherlockian.
Nevertheless, the address of the SHS of Madras was 33, Easr Mada
Street, T. Nagar. Madras - 600017.
I had corresponded with them on a few occassions. Must be around 1993-
94, after which the correspendence come to an abrupt end since there
were no replies forthcoming . It is a pity about that. I still retain
copies of that letters though DR Krishnaswamy never revealed his
identity to me. He replied his letters as Sherlock Holmes,no less.
The Hindu had carried a feature on Dr Krishnaswamy some three -four
years back. Let me see whether a google serach would yield any results.
