Dear Holmesians,
I suppose this year 2008 was a very mediocre year for our society since
the participation level had gone down drastically. I think the sole
high point of this year was the publication of Dr Pinaki's book. I hope
2009 would be a very productive year with Guy Ritchie's movie to look
forward to

Dear Sumal, it would be great if you might prepare a series of talks on the
Canon and why you and the Society are so keen on Conan Doyle's work. This
series could be offered to India's radio stations and would definitely
enthuse listeners and possibly increase membership substantially.

Any thoughts!

As always

Dear Sumal and other Holmesians,

That was quite interesting. It brought into focus which readers might have
wondered but not dared to talk out aloud about: What if the Master had made a
mistake?

In one of the series (the one with the interracial marriage where a white woman
marries an African, I believe), Holmes requests Watson that if he ever finds
him, Holmes, getting too overconfident or cocky, to whisper...errr, you know,
the name of such and such case in which he came to a very erroneous
conclusion. Not only that, there are 1 or 2 other cases where the Master could
not accomplish what he had set out to do because he was either too late or had
deduced wrongly. So Holmes has been wrong. And he does not mind admitting it.
Sir ACD could not change this character of his creation.

As regards the fact that Holmes was mistaken about Jack Stapleton, well, all the
evidence points to him being the villain of the piece. And doesn't he kill his
wife in the end, or was that just in the movie?

Dear Sumal and other Holmesians,

I, for one, have seen most of Guy Ritchie's films. But for the sometimes
incomprehensible Cockney accents and gobbledygook words (to my ears, at least),
they are pretty good on the whole. In fact, "Phir Hera Pheri" was a sort
of Indian version of "Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels" with only 3 instead of
4 friends.

But for him to make a movie on Holmes would be like me trying to write about,
say, Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, about whom I don't know much except for that
(moral?) story of his trying to feed his clothes. Guy Ritchie should definitely
have consulted the experts or least online societies like us.

Sridhar
PS: Robert Downey Jr. is a very good actor but he does not in any way resemble
Holmes. And what about his height? Is he tall enough?

Dear Homlesians,
I think Guy Ritchie is taking too many liberties with the Canon. It
seems that Lord Blackwood is the arch villian in this movie according
to press reports. I do not think there is aLord Blackwood anywhere
mentioned in the Canon.Should' nt Sherlock Holmes Society of London
stand up and protest on the distortions? Why could'nt the production
company consult eminent Sherlockians like Peter Blau, Chris Redmond
etc before venturing to produce a movie on Sherlock Holmes

Got it...The Sign of Four.

"Very sorry, Mr. Thaddeus," said the porter inexorably.
"Folk may be friends o' yours, and yet no friend o' the master's.
He pays me well to do my duty, and my duty I'll do. I don't
know none o' your friends."
"Oh, yes you do, McMurdo," cried Sherlock Holmes ge-
nially. "I don't think you can have forgotten me. Don't you
remember that amateur who fought three rounds with you at
Alison's rooms on the night of your benefit four years back?"
"Not Mr. Sherlock Holmes!" roared the prize-fighter. "God's
truth! how could I have mistook you? If instead o' standin' there
so quiet you had just stepped up and given me that cross-hit of
yours under the jaw, I'd ha' known you without a question. Ah,
you're one that has wasted your gifts, you have! You might have aimed high, if
you had joined the fancy."

Dear Sumal and other Holmesians,

I am quite sure there is mention of a bout in another adventure where Holmes is
being threatened by a guy with a broken nose (or it could be "cauliflower" ears,
or maybe both) who later reminds Holmes how he had defeated the latter in the
2nd (or it could be the 3rd round) a few years back.

O tempora, O mores! Even in the Sidney Paget illustration of the (not-so)
final struggle, only his cap flutters to the fall - and his other jousts
with the villians in a couple of short stories were always short, sharp
boxing contests (one unseemly clawing at the face etc. in the Empty house
but not much of that elsewhere too)

And, don't miss - what's with a (what looks like) fashionable rendition of
the good doctor? Is he wearing a
fedora<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedora_(hat)>?
And those teashades that Law is wearing? What decade is this movie set in?

aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

Dear Holmesians,
New stills from the Sherlock Holmes movie directed by Guy Ritchie has
been released to the press. One of them show Robert Downey Jr who
plays Sherlock Holmes barechested in a fight ring and the other one
with Dr Watson. It seems the director wants to feature both the
Master's skills in Martial Arts as well as his intellect.

Dear Sumal,

The review was perfect from a journalistic viewpoint, just enough to pique the
interest of those not familiar with the work and except for the fact that it is
not "Rein Bach" but "Reichenbach" falls it is correct in every aspect.

Dear James and Holmesians,
I could'nt agree with you more. However, I think it is also because
activity in a group seems to be confined to a select few and is not as
broad based as it should be.Fresh minds can bring in better ideas
which can be discussed by all.

Yes, Holmes retired to his beekeeping here in East Sussex, just south of
London. His creator lived the final years of his life in East Sussex and
there's a statue of Conan Doyle in a small town in Sussex called Crowborough
where I think he is buried. It's a Victorian town, largely, near the
extensive Ashdown Forest, about an hour from Central London.
