I think Pune would be good (Poonah). Maybe at the university? Perhaps
people from the National Defence Academy would attend any presentations.

The Mayor could be approached to ask if the city would underwrite various

A convention for Indian fans would be a superb idea - not least as a way of
increasing membership too. You could also produce and sell all sorts of
appropriate items for the group's funds - meerschaum pipes perhaps!? And
make sure you tell Bollywood.

If you picked a town or city, which would you suggest could be the 'Sherlock
Holmes capital of India'? Or would you hold it at that Sherlock Holmes
hotel?

Dear Holmesians and Tim,
We still have those travelling libraries in India, I have seen them both in
Kerala and Tamil Nadu. They have a social cause to it too!. The Local
library Authority pays school children too distribute books among potential
readers.
I think we should organise a convention for Indian fans. i think we are
quite poised to do that, with around 190 members!

And I finished reading the book just last week - though I was afraid
(when I bought the book) that I wouldn't be able to find much time to
read the book given all the academic work I have to do, it so happened
that I didn't find much time to do all the academic work I had to do
since I was reading your book. :)

Welcome, sir.

In ye olden days here in England there used to be travelling libraries - I
remember the trailer would arrive once a week in my village, sit there for
about 2 hours so people could return books and take out others. I seem to
remember there was a charge of 3d ('thruppence') per book per week.

I take Anand's point about on-line but is there a potential readership in
India who are literate (or know someone who is) but do not have access to
the Internet, for example in the big cities?

A great idea...

We have discussed similar ideas here before for example, the very old
suggestion of establishing a physical society - I guess I was one of the
people in the group who proposed this.

But regarding a library, it could be online too,so maybe physical
presence is not a limiting factor.

Hello all,

I joined this group yesterday - after accidentally coming across it
while looking for online reviews of a Holmes-related book. I am
introducing myself to all of you.

About me: Native of Calicut/Kerala, educated in Mumbai, worked in
Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, currently in Kolkata but home base is
Chennai (that is, somewhat familiar with all these cities). Also have
lived outside India for 3 years (Canada and Europe). Professional
information is available at http://www.linkedin .com/in/binand.

Association with Holmes: Started with my grand-uncle' s battered copy
of a 1950s edition of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" in the late
eighties, when I was in my early teens (and was also discovering other
authors like Agatha Christie and Erle Stanley Gardner). Had read the
entire canon by 1989. Today I like to think of myself has a
connoisseur of detective fiction - have (translated) anthologies from
across the world and settings that span several centuries. Current
favourites are police procedurals by Ian Rankin, Henning Mankell and
Michael Connelly.

Holmes Related: I own the entire canon (of course!), and a few other
bits and pieces (some are at the moment in long-term storage). These
are (maybe not exhaustive):

1. The Mandala of Sherlock Holmes -
http://www.amazon. co.uk/Mandala- Sherlock- Holmes-Missing- Years/dp/
0719556457/
2. The Curious Case of 221B -
http://www.flipkart .com/curious- case-221b- partha-basu/ 8172237898- yv23f518lb
(the most recent addition; the one whose review I was looking for when
I encountered this group)

3. The Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes -
http://www.amazon. co.uk/Chess- Mysteries- Sherlock- Holmes-Tantalizi
ng/dp/0812923898 /
- non-detective stories, this book is an introduction to a class of
chess problems called Retrograde Analysis

4. Right Through the Pack -
http://www.amazon. co.uk/Right- Through-Pack- Robert-Darvas/ dp/0910791694/
- One chapter in this book of bridge problems has a Holmes/Watson
connection

5. http://www.amazon. co.uk/Sherlock- Holmes-Complete- Collection-
DVD/dp/B001CWLFH 2/
- DVD set
6. http://www.amazon. co.uk/BBC- Sherlock- Holmes-Collectio n-DVD/dp/
B000EZ7VFI/
- Another DVD set

7. Similar books (detective with chronicler): Entire collection of
Feluda, a sampling of Byomkesh Bakshi (Indian), one of Solar Pons, few
of Dupin, entire Agatha Christie collection (both book and DVD) etc.
etc.

Currently reading The Curious Case of 221B.

I only hope Guy Ritchie produces something better this time than his usual
fare.
Anyway, the ever truthful and lasting Holmes & Watson act in my mind would
be
Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke for the Granada television series in the
80s.
Not sure if any act can ever replace the impression Jeremy Brett left behind
of the
master, especially towards the beginning of the series. Later due to his
disease
his appearance changed dramatically and he had "puffed up" look due to
Oedema
etc which made the character deviate substantially from the characteristic
Holmes
  persona.

Dear Friends,
As we Sherlockians, world-wide wait for the new movie starring
Robert Downey Jr. in the role of the Master , ( slated for release in November
this year)
There's more good news on the subject .
I came across this interesting article yesterday .
See what Jude Law , who plays Dr. Watson in the movie, has to say
Kumar Bhatia.
5 August 2009
Jude law is desperate to work in another Sherlock Holmes movie and is hoping for
a sequel because there are so many more stories to tell.
The actor plays Holmesfaithful sidekick Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchies new
adaptation of the classic detective tale, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

"The more you work on the substance of the film, the more you go back to the
source material, and the more, you realise, there is to tell. This relationship
went on and on and on, and there are fantastic stories and even better
characters,
We would love that the audience falls in love with it as much as we have and
then we can tell a whole bunch more,"

Dear SHians,

The movie is releasing this December according to reports. As some of you might
recall I was among those people willing to cast the first stone, so to
speak, and wonder aloud about the advisability of getting an actor like Robert
Downey, Jr, to portray the Master (although he's a good actor from what I've
seen of him).

From what I've seen on the various websites - the teaser trailers - they've made
a sort of caricature of Holmes that is in no way related to his actual image in
the hearts of millions of fans across generations. It's a "spoof" film based on
the adventures of Sherlock Holmes, more comic and "action-packed" as suits the
21st century.

One could compare it to the image of James Bond as presented by Daniel Craig,
although most fans of that genre consider Sir Sean Connery as the original. The
debate rages. In fact, Roger Moore would be a better comparison since he never
took these movies seriously. He was on the whole a mild-mannered, almost comic,
womanizing British spy (from his own accounts in all his interviews).

For a non-bookish kind of person who has never heard about Sherlock Holmes
(think a 11-year-old before the first Harry Potter was published) this movie
would no doubt be "fun" and a great timepass.

Dear Sridhar,
I do agree. The Master is all over the place on the Net too. The ultimate proof
of his popularity even in these illiterate times!I only hope that the GEN Y also
adopts the Master the way we have. I have made it a point to gift my nephews and
nieces with copies of the Canon so that they are hooked the way I was!

Most curious. A Man born of a man's imagination still ruling the roost eight
decades after the writer man died. I guess the Man will live forever.
