I was just browsing through the photo albums on the site(i hadn't
before). You have a pretty good collection sumal. Why dont you
increase it a little. By adding more of watson's and other pictures
from the movies.?? I'd love to see that if you did.

Hello ppl

I was wondering, did anyone notive that there is a similarity between
the two heroes:

1. Both are British (SH not by birth but he certainly was an
Englishman to core with only a few but distinct Bohemian
characteristics)

2. The furore over the Potter books has not been matched since
Sherlock Holmes strand magazine.

3. Both have arch rivals who have tried to kill them but losing their
power instead. (according to jamyang norbu's version of the 'lost
years' moriarty also lives)

4. Both have a male best friend (though harry has a female friend too
but not involved in her romantically)

This is not much but i guess is enough
.

The main difference bet. them is that JK Rowling loves Harry while
Sir arthur hated dear Sherlock

Dear Holmesians,
My personal favourite among short stories is the "the scandal in
Bohemia''because it is one of the few stories in which the enigmatic
personality of Sherlock Holmes comes through. In novels,my personal
favourite is the Hound of Baskervilles. This book has a gripping
supernatural atmosphere and has sudden twists in plenty. The entire
novel moves at a frentic pace and is a magical introduction to the
first time readers into the world of Sherlock Holmes

Hello ppl

I'm glad to se that there is atleast 'some' activity!! on this group.
I wonder why the harry potter and LOTR mailing sites have so much
postings and sherlock holmes who (undoubtedly) is the greatest hero
of all times is sitting without receiving any mails. Dont worry I'm
accusing no one. I know everybody is busy enough but one mail in a
coupla days matters not much. does it?

My favourite story in the canon is The red headed league and fav
novel is the valley of fear. What abt u guyz??

Hi Serlock Holmes fans,

Wonder if there is any research done on regiment names and places and
event descriptions as described by Conan Doyle when talking about the
backgrounds of some of his characters in various Sherlock Holmes
stories. I'd be interested in compiling a list of all Indian
references in his tales. (besides ofcourse the "missing years")

Let me know.

Hello

Holmes had great love for the doctor too. He also appreciated his
loyalty and knowledge but had less faith in his wit and the ability
if deduction that watson claims to have somewhat acquired from his
genius friend. Though he sent watson to investigage the disappearance
of lady frances carfax, even after his hinting him to look at the
adversary's ear, watson disregarded it as a joke and muddled things
up. Even in "hounds" watson feels important being sent to guard the
life of henry baskerville but little did he know (before he actually
found out) that holmes was always there on a lookout ( though in dire
emergency holmes could be of little help).

But at the end of the day watson always had some hand in solving of
holme's cases. More than once did sherlock put his life in the hands
of this supposedly slow witted writer doctor.

Dear Holmesians,
The entire literary device of using a sidekick for a detactive arose
from the sucess of Dr Watson narration of the adventures of the
master. This has been copied by many,Agatha Christie 's Capt Hastings
is one which immediately in mind but with indifferent sucess.
Dr Watson was also quite modest about his intellectual capacity
though he was an MD.His intelligence nevertheless shines through in
the adventure of the Resident Patient when he shows Dr Trevylan that
he is well read and up to date in medical knowledge.Sherlock Holmes
had great regard for the Doctor as shown in the adventure of Charles
Augustus milverton.

Hi

Dr. watson was a very able chronicler but was
constantly criticised by holmes for adding drama to
the stories rather than giving importance to the
logistics of deduction. Thank god watson never in any
way swayed from his own style or else we perhaps would
never have heard of the master at all. But holmes
himself tried his hand at writing two of his
stories(which were surprisingly comparitively
unsuccessful) and admitted himself that writing was
indeed a difficult job if you were not to add drama.
But the adventure of the lion's mane is still one of
the best deductive work by holmes. Pity his writing
didn't get as much praise

Keep posting

Welcome aboard, good doctor!

No true Holmesian will ever underestimate the
contribution of Dr. Watson. After all, it was the good
doctor who took the effort to pen Holmes’
accomplishments, besides the master sleuth saw in
Watson not only an able doctor, but also a close
confidant.

Hope you have a nice time around.

Hello.

According to a Conan Doyle website:

'...By 1916, Conan Doyle's explorations into psychic matters had
convinced him that he should devote the final years of his life to
the advancement of Spiritualism. He began to write extensively on the
subject, and to travel the world with his family promoting his
beliefs. From those who had lost loved ones during the First World
War he found a ready acceptance for his arguments, but his beliefs
were to bring him into conflict with many people during the course of
the final thirteen years of his life.

'Spiritualism became Conan Doyle's religion and his driving force,
taking him to Australia, America, Canada, and South Africa for
lecture tours which he recorded in various biographical studies. He
was careful in his testing of mediums but, not unnaturally, those
cases where he was deceived have been seized upon by critics to
justify what they regard as his credulity. Credulity was a charge
also to be levelled at Conan Doyle when, in 1922, he declared the
famous Cottingley Fairy photographs to be genuine. This latter case
has been frequently documented, and the photographs are famous the
world over.'

I believe people can communicate with the dead via the planchette.
Though I read some of his major historical novels, 'The White
Company' and 'Sir Nigel,' I didn't find them as interesting as his
major fictional creations, Sherlock Holmes, Professor Challenger, and
Brigadier Gerard. Doyle created a supernatural atmosphere in stories
like 'The Hound of the Baskervilles,' but doesn't seem to have
written much about the occult.

hmmm.. interesting...
the last time i looked up something on Doyle, he was
more fascinated with the occult, as Occultism was on
its rise at Doyle's time. However, Ashok's theory
needs a little more pondering.

Hello everyone.

Since names like Moriarty, Doyle, Holmes and Watson are as common in
Britain as Dasgupta is in India, too much need not be read into the
disclosure that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle belonged to the same club as a
man named Moriarty, unless that Moriarty was imbued with some of the
evil traits of the character in the stories.

In fact, writers often change the names of any real-life people they
may base their characters on.

Moriarty, Doyle, Holmes and Watson are common names in the Winnipeg
telephone directory.

Cordially,

Dear Holmesians,
Holmesians all over the world are much enthused by the disclosure
that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle belonged to the same club as a man named
Moriarty.According to the Telegraph, until now,the only contender as
the inspiration for Holmes's arch enemy was a boy called Moriarty
who attended school with the author. However, it has emerged that one
C.Moriarty from Harrow was a member of Sheringham Golf club on the
Norfolk coast, where Conan Doyle played. The discovery was made by
Douglas Blunden, the club's historian.
I would like Holmesians of this society towrite on this discovery
