Hi

First, thanks for the welcome. This looks like an interesting group.

Yes. It is in Hall's book "Sherlock Holmes and his creator"

>how you came to read it because

Luck and legacies. i've been fortunate to pick up some rare books,
and have had access to some pretty old collections of books.

>it you gave us a more detailed review.

Will do. I haven't read the essay in more than two years, so I'll
need to refresh my memory. Will re-read and post in a day or two.

Last month a man dressed like Sherlock Holmes and claiming to be a police
officer managed to trick a dealer into letting him steal a car on a test drive.

The mystery man, wearing a deerstalker hat, stole the Toyota Previa from
Pinewood Motors in Brighton Road, Coulsdon, after going on a test drive to
Croydon police station in Park Lane.

A salesman went with him, but the thief tricked him into getting out of the car
to fetch a colleague before speeding off just after 2.45pm last Friday.

He had told staff at the garage he was involved in buying a fleet of cars for
use by New Scotland Yard and MI5.

He he. If that's what Holmes is being portrayed as being reduced to do then god
bless the future Holmesian generations.

In the Richard Green death mystery,
The coroner Paul Knapman said: "There are many comments in this case in favour
of suicide. He was acting strangely and he seemed to be scared and there is no
evidence of violence.
"I am perfectly content to say that suicide is the most likely possibility but
we have no note and it's a very unusual way of killing yourself to put a lace,
which must hurt, around the neck and continue to twist it.
"The second possibility is unusual behaviour - often some form of deviant sexual
behaviour. There is nothing that actually points to this form of death.
"As for murder, there is not much in the way of direct evidence.
"It's an unusual form of death that can be done by others. We do have
interesting messages from him about the paranoia he was feeling but it is
assumed by all to be without much foundation."
Mr Lancelyn Green's sister, Priscilla, told the inquest she had become worried
about her brother in the week before his death after a string of bizarre
conversations.
"It was clear he was very concerned about the upcoming Sherlock Holmes sale,"
she said.
"This was Richard's life - Conan Doyle. It seemed that something about this sale
was worrying him enormously and I tried to get him to explain to me what it was.
"He made comments about his own reputation, about the possibility of his name
being in the papers, about people behaving in a way he did not expect them to
and doing things he did not expect them to."
He had sent here a strange note with three names and their telephone numbers on
it which had seemed to Ms Lancelyn Green "to be the beginning of a thriller
novel".
The document had "Please keep these names safe" written on it.
Police found Mr Lancelyn Green's body after his sister could reach no reply from
his London house.
The last known person to see the Holmes expert alive was his former boyfriend,
care worker Lawrence Keen, from Roehampton.
They had been out for dinner the night before Mr Lancelyn Green's body was found
and Mr Keen said his friend had been "quite depressed".
"He asked me to go in the garden because he thought the flat was bugged," Mr
Keen told the inquest.
"His mind was not its normal self and he was telling me someone in America was
trying to hunt him down in the Sherlock Holmes Society."

Hmmm, Five Orange Pips or the Valley of Fear? Death of a Holmesiac I'd say
(Holmes+Maniac). This is far beyond the rating system you devised Anand, eh?

Oh yes, and according to Reuters, Mr Lancelyn Green's friend Nicholas Rathbone
Utechin, a relative of the Sherlock Holmes actor Basil Rathbone, said his death
had revived rumours of "the curse of Conan Doyle". Since his death in 1930,
several people with links to his work have died suddenly.

As a person who believed in spiritualism, it won't be a far cry for him to curse
all Holmesians since he himself had come to hate the "monster" he had created.

Hello Rishi

First of all a warm welcome from me and all the group members. We are not many
and are always glad of active additions.

I take it that you have read this essay of Trevor Hall then? I would like to
know how you came to read it because as far as I have found out, in India, any
books other than the Canon, Mandala of Sherlock Holmes and the novel version of
Young Sherlock Holmes is a rare commodity. Atleast one of us got to read it.
We'd be honoured it you gave us a more detailed review.

And on a more informal note, please introduce yourself fully in the following
format devised by Anand.

Welcome Again
Manraviel

1. Name
2. Age/Sex
3. Location/Native of
4. Profession
5. Hobbies (optional)
6. Holmes Memorabilia possessed(optional)
7. Holmesian Rating (1-5) (optional)
8. Other passions (optional and please dont say 'sex' ;-) )
9. Holmesian Plans (optional)

The Holmesian rating is a rating that you can give yourself
depending on how much the Master has influenced your thinking,
talking, lifestyle, reading and method of solving problems in
life.

The rating according to me goes from 1-5 with 1 being
the minimal Holmesian to 5 being the complete Holmesian.

1 ... Familiar with Holmes & ACD, Has read most of the works.
Interested in Holmesian movies.

2 ... Read the whole canon and some other works by ACD. Familiar
with othe pastiches and the history of Holmes and ACD.

3 .... Read the whole canon at least 50 times. Sleeps with a copy
of one of the volumes of the Canon by the bedside. Wizard
of Holmes trivia. Does not miss discovery channel documentaries
and short films on Holmes or ACD. Considers it a personal loss
when Holmesian films or documentaries on TV is missed. Tries
to collect more Holmes memorabilia. Has bought the whole canon
at
least 2 times so far. Keeps looking for Holmes memorabilia
in bookshops and auction centers.

4 ... Holmes wizard. Knows most of the canon inside out. Considers
"221 B Baker Street" as a place of pilgrimage. Has plans to
visit it sometime in the future or has visited at least once
already. Is familiar with "Jack the Ripper" and the actual
story behind the "Hound". Says "Hercule who" when asked about
Agatha Chirstie's famous detective. Thinks that Perry Mason is
stone worker. Addicted to coffee.

Can recite the 56 short stories and four novels and
all the major characters in them given 20 minutes. Thinking
of writing a Holmes pastiche or has already written one.
Tries to apply the "science of deduction" to impress friends
and colleagues and generally gets ridiculed by them. Sleeps
with a copy of the canon or one of its volumes by the bedside.

5 ... Holmes Master. He is the ultimate Holmesian on earth. He
has already written a Holmes pastiche which is comparable to
the originals. Walks with a victorian aura around him.
Lives most of the time in the 19th century foggy London in his
dreams. Is able to solve problems that confound detectives
by sitting on his armchair. Has counted all the steps in the
stair that leads up to his house. Identifies that the milkman
has visited, by interpreting the footprint on his doorstep (and
also the small splash of milk). When goes out with friends
for dine out his favorite past time is to deduce the
professions of people sitting around the other tables and
generally succeeds in that.

One of the best studies I've seen of ACD and spiritualism is a short
essay by Trevor Hall. His basic thesis is that ACD consciously
abandoned scepticism- unlike Houdini. This was the reason that ACD
appeared to be promoting even frauds [the Cottingley fairies was only
one such.] To ACD, the objective angle- whether Mr Smith the medium
was a fraud- did not matter. What mattered was the "greater truth" of
spiritualism. Hall goes on to draw an interesting analogy between a
contemporary of ACD who had much the same profile BEFORE his
conversion to spiritualism. That is, a fine athlete, active in
society etc. Brief interlude of interest in, and exposure to
spiritualism as a youth. Also of a Catholic background, rejected the
faith- and all organized religions. Hall speculates that, in some
sense, spiritualism provided an alternative for ACD and this
gentleman.

Hi, I'm new here, this is my first post. I trust Mr. Bhatia does not
object to my answering the question. Richard Lancelyn Green
compiled "The Uncollected Sherlock Holmes", Penguin. It's a brilliant
source of much new and unusual reproductions of primary material.
There's a lot, not directly on the Canon, but on personalia, Holmes
on the screen, the background to Holmes, which is basically a
composite about the creation of Holmes, drawn from ACD's
autobiography, and even a review of the "Adventures" by Joseph Bell.
It also has complete reproductions of the scripts of theatre
adaptations of some cases produced in ACD's lifetime. Well worth
possessing.

btw, in case you folks are wondering. Am from Delhi, 25, long time
Holmesian, and it's great to see a Holmesian society in India!

dear members
it is with shock and deep regret that i have to share with fellow members
the news of the death of Richard Lancelyn Green
i quote from a news item i read this morning .
=================================================================

SHERLOCK HOLMES ACE IN SHOELACE DEATH
Mystery surrounds the death of a leading Sherlock Holmes Expert. Richard
Lancelyn Green
who was found in his bed , garotted with a shoelace and surrounded by
cuddly toys.
Westminster Coroners Court heard that Mr. Green , 50 , who had devoted his
life to studying Sir Arthur Conan Doyles fictional detective had suffered a
" very unusual death "
A wooden spoon had been used to tighten the shoelace around his neck

=======================================================================

i'm sure members are familiar with Richard Lancelyn Green ,
In any case , within the next day or two , i shall attempt to post a few
lines on his work

hear from Anand on this . I am not pressurizing you , Anand in any way

Hi Holmesians

After peaking at 61 mails in March, the list has turned very
quiet and passive in April.

I assume that it is because the summer heat has turned up and
driven down the energy levels of the members.

Or is it because the list is imitating the Master himself who had
occasional bursts of energy followed by long periods of stupor?

      Beat the heat!

No its not the famous broadway musical.

Rather, I have acquired a fancy for the feline species. A few days ago I got a
cat. That's right a brown and white striped non-pedigree little pussy cat. And
guess what I named him.

Sherlock.

Wasn't that obvious?

Good. In fact I purchased "Mandala of sherlock Holmes" the
other day from Gangarams in M.G Road, Bangalore. That was
the only pastiche I could find there. They have the usual
collections in paperback and hardback also but none of the
other pastiches or books related to ACD himself.

Thanks jin on that lovely bit of research. I remember covering this
aspect of Doyle albeit a bit sketchily. You did a good job , hoping
to see the samething in future.

I think this particular point has been discussed before.

Anyway...Houdini and ACD were great friends. They both attended many seances and
shared an interest in spiritualism. Doyle and his wife even went so far as to
hold a seance for Houdini and his wife Bess. The purpose of the seance was to
contact Houdini's dead mother. Doyle's wife claimed to have made contact, but
Houdini remained skeptical. The incident put a strain on their friendship.

They were to battle again over the Margery case. Sir Doyle was absolutely
convinced that the medium from Boston was genuine. Houdini was called in to
investigate the Margery case and soon Doyle and Houdini were exchanging angry
words in the press.

Conan Doyle was faced, with his friend Houdini, with a conjurer who could
duplicate the psychic feats of mediums. His response was not to disbelieve in
the mediums, but to attribute supernatural powers to the conjurer. "My dear
chap," Doyle wrote, "why go round the world seeking a demonstration of the
occult (Houdini visited all the famous mediums when he toured Europe) when you
are giving one all the time? Mrs. Guppy (a well-known and hugely fat medium who
was reported to have traveled by telekinesis from Highbury to Bloomsbury) could
dematerialize, and so could many folk in Holy Writ, and I do honestly believe
that you can also."

Houdini was religiously conservative, even disowning one of his brothers for
violating one of Leviticus's sectarian taboos (218-219). And when he testified
before a Congressional committee in support of an anti-fortune-telling bill, he
said:

This is positively no attack upon a religion. Please understand that
emphatically. I am not attacking a religion. . . . But this thing they call
'spiritualism,' wherein a medium intercommunicates with the dead, is a fraud
from start to finish. There are only two kinds of mediums, those who are mental
degenerates and who ought to be under observation, and those who are deliberate
cheats and frauds. I would not believe a fraudulent medium under oath; perjury
means nothing to them. . . . Millions of dollars are stolen every year in
America, and the Government [has] never paid any attention to it, because they
look upon it as a religion.

Even after Houdini's death, in a letter to Bess Houdini, Doyle reiterated his
stubborn conviction that Houdini possessed the very powers he devoted his life
to refuting, including an ability to dematerialize his body in order to pass
through solid walls (225). In doing so, he foreshadowed the parapsychologists at
George Washington University, St. Louis, who, after James Randi's "Project
Alpha" had exposed their gullibility by having them pronounce the illusions of
two youthful conjurers as genuine psychic phenomena, actually asserted that
Randi's associates really were psychics who for some reason were now pretending
to be magicians.

I did some searching on Sir Arthur and spiritualism,
and got some interesting articles - refer
http://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/doyle.htm and
http://unmuseum.mus.pa.us/doyle.htm - unfortunately
they are not very flattering on ACD

Members would definitely be aware of ACD's involvement
in the "Piltdown man" case.

Another strange thing was that ACD was friends with
Houdini the master illusionist. Their personalities
seemed to be very different - even within themselves.
ACD's main creation, The Master, used pure logic to
solve his mysteries, whereas ACD himself believed in
Spiritualism! Similarly (or contraririly) Houdini
performed the most amazing magic tricks (illusions),
but spent his life exposing fraudulent spiritualists!
Opposites attact, right?

The other thing about ACD and Houdini were some story
I had read a long time back, about a rift in their
friendship. It seems they had a bet about one of
Houdini's illusions, whether he would be able to
perform it (ACD saying he would not complete). During
the illusion (which I think involved getting locked
into a box and being dropped in the ocean), Houdini
heard some tappings once he got inside the box. So he
came out - but no-one admitted to rapping on it! This
got repeated multiple times, till he called it off -
but be blamed Sir Arthur for causing the noises (even
though he was nowhere near) So was it a real ghost
event??? who knows??? (but I would be interested if
anyone else had read this story - my memory is too bad
- after 50, everything goes downhill)

Regards,
Jinesh
