I've been wondering rather than coming in at such high velocity that involves such high risks, is it not possible to come up with a method that permits a smoother, slower , gradual descent of the space shuttle by orbiting / circling the globe at a small descent angle. Agreed it would need more time for landing, but who is in a hurry???
