hi guys
i returned to bombay just yesterday and sent a message across the grp.
but today when i read the mails i really was surprised... no shocked
to hear the ishimla will be closing down. the website has been a good
reference point...
as some one had suggested... can't it be made paid, with a nominal sum
of amount per year ? i think that should not be a problem for ppl...

Thank you for responding. Are you working in Delhi or Chandigarh?? Well I did mentioned Divya Himachal in my original post. IE has been doing some great work in the region.. the latest being highlighting the rock painting of Beas river-bed till Rohtang. The entire stretch had become a fieldom of MBD books and other companies.

Of late if you see the web portals of Indiatimes and Yahoo India, these  lacks proper moderation. Message boards on both these websites are full of typing spams in whatever category you check. Yahoo India still seems to learn a lot about this country. Under the category States and UTs only six states are listed. Indiatimes have one of the largest topics listed but they are full of spam of all kind. I wonder why these are not updated??

Some of the best message boards are still the Usenet discussion forums. Any one here who been a regular on those boards??

Well Nitin,

Since I am working with The Indian Express it is my
duty to clarify your doubts.
I think u ave not gone through the IR website
properly. (expressindia.com)
We don't have separate sites for different centers but
there is a link titled regional newslines under which
you can fine nide fefferent newslines and of course
Chandigarh Newsline. But yes, I agree that right now
IR is not paying much attention to HP. Tribune is
still a broadsheet papeer and will remaint to be in
that shape for centuries.
One paper u missed out in the list that covers HP is
Divya Himachal, Himachal's first Hindi daily. Now this
paper is published from Dharamshala and Chandigarh

Today I was speaking to a friend, who recently shifted to this place and somehow we started discussing about news papers published from Chandigarh.. I was amazed to know Chandigarh has become a newspaper city of north with all newspaper having a Himachal editions.

Consider this, the news papers covering Himachal are:

Dainik Tribune / Dainik Bhaskar / Dainik Jagran / Amarujala / Divya Himachal / Punjab Kesri / Tribune / Indian Express / Times of India / Hindustan Times..

am I missing any names?? Did'nt knew Himachal generated so much news :-)) Going by the online editions the best coverage is no doubt by Tribune, Jagran and Amar Ujala. TOI and HT have completely blocked HP in the online editons though TOI have a Chandigarh portal but it basically covers Chandigarh and Punjab news only.

I am surprised why Indian Express have not bothered to put the Chandigarh edition online as it has been the oldest newspaper in the region and having credibility par excellence in the region!! Mr Kanwar Sandhu, then editor of IE did a splendid job and at one time the circulation surpassed  Tribune.

After he left and suddenly IE came up with the brain wave of having been presented like a 'spread-sheet' which the others were quick to follow mainly TOI and the looks became more important than the content.. that these 'national' newspapers have been given a stiff competition by Tribune..

I have'nt seen the print edition of Tribune after national dailies became spread-sheets.. (whoever coined that phrase.. grrrrr) Can anyone please tell whether Tribune still has the older standard newspaper format or it has scumbed to the competition??? BTW Indian Express had a Shimla Newsline on its website long time back but then it was discontinued.. Its a pity that one of the finest editions of IE is not online!!!

Well in the good old early ninties.. there was nothing called 'online'.. it was a hep thing to be a member of the State Library next to the Church.. the libraray had some great collections..both in Hindi and English and the reading room upstairs was awesome.. the whole place had an aura of its own. Usually retired uncles and students preparing for HAS exams donned the place. My seat used to be on the far end upstairs facing the church.. two comfortable chairs were placed their. The reading room had all the regular newspaper, not many at that time.. and strangely Punjab Kesri was blocked out as it had a tiff with the then govt.. The library even had a 'Deccan Herald from Bangalore.. always a day late.. Vinod Mehta's Pioneer.. and the usual Delhi dailys. Hindi front was dominated by PK and Jansatta then. PK was the leader with the gossipy page one  :)) for the serious types it was Jansatta. Jansatta was a great newspaper and unlike IE it never challanged govt and was a mature stuff. After all it was in the good hands of Om Thanvi..

Coming back to the State Libraray.. the place was a treasure of books. The membership was a princly 150/- and 5/- fine per day if you returned the book late after 14 days. i remember the fine precisely as it used to dent my pocket money seriously as I was pathetically late with returning books on time!

The best I remember was Chandrakanta Santiti, all six volumes finished in a month. I flunked in all class tests that month as my priorities were somewhere else.. Those red-lines on my score sheet caused a 'search' of my room at home.. and after that I was permitted just one visit per week to the library!! Years later on vacation in Shimla I found the place had been closed down and found the books stored in the godown of evening college without any care!! I was furious and shot a letter to the Municipal Comissoner which eventually got lost in files somewhere...

thats me at my nostalgic best.. do you have any memories... share with us!

Nitin

Hi sunny,
thanks for your comments and i really appreciate that you are ready
to maintain the site, thanks a ton but ya as you mentioned there are
financial problems cos every year i spend lots on the site somewhere
around US$300, which is a big amount cos i don't anything in return
for my efforts so as you suggested to make the site paid well I
don't know how many users will agree on that but ya if that can be
done I am can carry on the work.

But again how many users will agree thats the big issue, cos all i
want to maintain the site is US$1/yr from each user if thats ok with
everyone.

Again it hurts me more than anyone else cos ishimla is like a first
child for me and i don't want to lose it but again i cannot help
when circumstances become like that.

I hope you guys understand.

Cheers
ankush

Hey, It hurts :(

There can be no reason for closing such a loving site.

Moreover, you can anyday find volunteers to maintain the site.
Atlest I'm always ready, and it will be like a honour for me

Pls don't do that.

Thanks for all the information you have been posting on this site.
Seems like you folks are having a great time out there in Simla. The
trip to Leh sounds wonderful. I lived in Simla most of my life and
studied at St.Edwards and then at KV Jakhoo. It would be nice to
remisce with folks who did the same. Sorry to hear that ishimla is
closing down. Take care.

The Delhi meet report was a great reading Varun.. Thanks for sharing with us.. and yes the photos.. post them soon.

There are a few messages about the trek.. a little misunderstanding.. it was a light hearted offer to Sarju to be a partner in a trekking firm!

Well this year anyone wants to travel to Leh on a bike.. post a message.. We can finish it off in 10 days from Manali and back to Manali. A good two stroke bike will do or any four stroke 125 cc and above can make this journey. We can plan it in July end or August. Plan to do Manali - Leh - Khardungla - Nubra - Leh - Manali.

Finally, welcome to all new members.. raj, ashes, anajali, osho, nangal.. please do post your details to the group.. and have a great time on board.

Nitin

It’s been few days since we had our first ‘off-line’
gathering in Delhi and
I am still thinking about it.Eleven people from
different backgrounds and
diverse professions came together, with only one thing
in mind, ‘Love for
Himachal’.

The event was like a melting pot where diverse ideas,
opinions, and
suggestion found invigoration in a dream that can come
true, only if... The
group after discussing the state of things in Hmachal
concluded that the
people of Himachal themselves need to take some strong
steps (read
entrepreneurship) to improve the economic condition of
the state.

The group discussed a wide range of subjects under the
head - sustainable
development. A few are enumerated below:-

1 Mini Hydro projects - Around 350 MHP still available
to be tapped in the
state. Small hydro project are best suited for
mountain ecology.

2 Watershed management - The issue needs to be taken
up seriously keeping in
mind delegating water resource. A very important
aspect of sustainable
development that an help in utilising local resources
in a better manner
which ultimately would lead to
prosperity.

3 Marketing of Himachali handicraft - Provide an
interface between the
craftsmen and the end users by creating a suitable
marketing channel.

4 IT industry still has a potential in the state.

5 The need to rope in high end tourists especially
students from foreign
countries.

6 Ask Himachalies settled outside to invest in the
state, especially in the
tourism sector.

7 Build a strong public opinion in favour of economic
activism in the state.

8 Identify priority areas and then support them as a
pressure group

I am sure our fellow participants and members of the
fourth estate will have
lot of ideas to write about and thus promote the
overall interests of the
state. A brief profiles of those who attended the
meet:-

Especially I would like to mention about Sanjay
Versain (Indian Express) who
came all the way from Chandigarh to participate in the
meet. True to the
firebrand spirit of Express, Sanjay has good knowledge
of the state and
“will” to write about it. I am sure I would like to
pick up a copy of
express and read more of his write-ups.

Nav Qirti (Please mark the ’Q’ in Kirti) was the first
to arrive at the
Venue. A civil Engg (REC Hamirpur) and an MBA from
Shimla, Nav is on the
verge of starting his own venture FON (Friends of
Nature) India. He belongs
to Chamba and if you meet him you are sure to get a
business card. FON India
will introduce retail/supply chain concept of
marketing for Himachali
hadicrafts. Nav is a man of diverse talent, one of
which is poetry. Best
wishes to Nav, and I am sure hard work will create
wonders for him.

Professor Gosain (Delhi) is a well-known authority on
water resources
management from the Civil Engineering Department of
IIT Delhi. He had come
on the request of Pratap Chandnani. He has been
instrumental in arranging an
initial grant for research on
water-forest relationship and its effects on people’s
livelihood though a
multi-lateral donor agency located in UK. The project
also includes the
Hamirpur Engg.College and would initially focus on
Chabutra watershed
project near Hamirpur. I would like to thank Professor
Gosain for taking
time out of his busy schedule to meet us. His team is
developing the
mathematical model for simulating climatic conditions
using GIS technology,
which would be tested in Himachal. Professor Gosain
also extended us an open
invitation to visit IIT Delhi to see all these things
practically.
Anupam Thapa (Shimla) handles the Sports desk at
“Today” and sometimes also
manages to do some crime reporting. He has some good
contacts in the media
industry and if anybody in the group or your friends
are interested in being
part of the industry, they can send their resumes to
him.

Pratap Chandnani (Delhi)shares a special relation with
the state. Along with
his US principals (eFORCE Inc.) and a group of Silicon
Valley NRI’s, he is
pursuing small hydro projects in Himachal. He is also
working with IIT Delhi
on a framework for integrated watershed development
projects in HP. I would
like to thank him as it was he, who took the
initiative and brought us all
together at India Habitat Center. Pratap has made an
open invitation to
like-minded Himachalis to come and actively
participate by taking up 5 to
30% stake in their mini hydro projects located in
districts Kullu, Shimla
and Sirmour.
Rajeev Dhar (Code name: Dimitry) and Mrs Anuradha Dhar
(Palampur and
Jwalamukhi) were the senior-most members present in
the Age. A dairy
technologist by profession and IIM Ahemadabd pass-out
, Mr Dhar is a widely
traveled person. He has worked in Russia from seven
years and now runs a
distributorship for Pfizer in North India. One of the
most jovial persons at
the
gathering, Mr Dhar is person who youngsters can
emulate. Mrs. Anuradha Dhar
worked as businesswoman with her husband and now works
as a “Homemaker”
,raising their kids. Our best wishes for there
brightfuture.

Rachna Kanwar (Shimla), works as a Content Manager
with Indiatimes.com. She
is a product of St.Beedes College, Shimla, and has
been in Delhi for a long
time. She is the daughter of legendary TV actor
Manohar Singh, Rachna has
some great memories of her stay in Shimla. I am sure
with the leverage and
creative spirit of Rachna we would be hearing lot more
of our state in TOI.

Aradhna Mallik (Dharamshala) is currently pursuing her
Phd. in communication
behaviour for small kids at Denver (USA). She gave a
very valuable
suggestions that we should think of some common ideas,
priortise them and
then support them as a group. I am sure in the next
couple of meet we will
be able to do just that.

Madhur Trehan (Dharamshala):He is an electronics and
communication engineer
from Bangalore and and MBA from Indore. Currently
looking for a job in
Delhi. Madhur though was very quiet at the gathering,
but I am sure we will
hear more from him in the coming days.

Varun Rattan Singh (Dharamshala): Well I was there and
had some great time,
met all the above mentioned people and look forward to
a
beautiful, prosperous and growing Himachal. The amount
of work these people
are putting in makes me more optimistic about a bright
future for the state.

Few suggestions like renaming the group ‘Club
Information Network’ to ‘Voice
Of Himachal’ have already been implemented. We also
feel that people form
different cities should also form such bodies and
think about there own
states.

beautiful, prosperous and growing Himachal. The amount of work these people
are putting in makes me more optimistic about a bright future for the state.

Few suggestions like renaming the group ‘Club Information Network’ to ‘Voice
Of Himachal’ have already been implemented. We also feel that people form
different cities should also form such bodies and think about there own
states.
