Dear friends!
Wish you a very Happy New Year first of all!

Stepping in the new year on the right note, well I got reminded from Ankush, what he says about Rotaract. I formed a group in Shimla, almost four years ago by the name of 'Shlaysh Vrind' Umfortunately it was a dead society within a year itself as college students could not participate more actively. But in a few initial months there was good response and we did all sorts of good things. The motto was "Charity begins at home." With small programs like being environment friendly and going to schools and teacing children how to be environment friendly.

POLYTHENE
Like for example, if I am buying a pack of chips why do I need another polythene? Say no. Secondly, if a polythene is inevitable like vegetables, which are carried home and are used for just five minutes and when at home they are tucked away. So what we did was at our weekend meetings we all got the polythenes nicely laid out to our meetings, collected them and gave it to a vegetable seller to use them again. We did that in schools also, asked children to bring used polythenes that are not dirty and soiled, collect them and give it in cooperative / government stores. It was mandatory that they were clean.  Such small initiatives go a long way but the tempo has to be maintained and unfortunately the society became dead. We refrained form complete ban on plastic as it was impractical. We have to go step by step. The idea has to be driven into the mind how plastic is harmful for nature, then it can be carried forward for total ban.

TREE FELLING
There is a school in Sanjauli - "St. Xavier's". The school administration felled down a few trees to build up a new school building. And there was a blackboard or a notice board outside it. What we did was everyday in the evening or night, we posted a message on the blackboard with a chalk. -- "Save environment, save trees -- Even the school does not fell trees" Secondly we bombarded the school with personal mails. I do not know how much the principal was embarrased or would he refrain from such acts in future but it did make an impact on others who visited the school and passed by. Though the message remained there on the board till the teachers or the principal saw it. But we did it every night then for a week.
I know these are small initiatives but they make a beginning at least.

BLOOD DONATION
Getting the cue from Ankush, why not organize a camp in the new year. I know it would need a Herculian task to organize but why not get started in Delhi?

Regards,
Dhaleta Surender Kumar

hello friends

Good to see a nice chain of thougts coming up here. Jeewa , Ankush , Akhil
and other members , we have been discussing on these issues for a while now
. Ultimately we feel that everyone is involved in discussion but very few
people turn out when action is required.

To further the cause which is dear to all of us, we are forming a non profit
society which will work towards social and economic development of Himachal.
We are all a bunch of professionals who look forward to a developed
Himachal. Those who are interested in being part of this movement can
contact me by sending a mail to varun_singh@... . We all are
working on honorary basis. The same is expected from others.

thank you

Dear Ashok,

I fould lot of conviction in your statement about your
willingness to help establish `health tourism' project
in the state. Can you please elaborate on what kind of
help or expertise you can provide so that we can find
a suitable project for you.

Projects in Himachal:

   Dear Vikrant,

Re: your post in Newsletter Digest Number 383 on medical tourism and hydel
projects

It is posible to comeup with a world class International Wellness Centre
in Himachal as well as the state has a huge potential to tap natural water
resources for Hydel. I may perhaps help in this field in providing turnkey
solution for a world class Holistic Healthcare Centre in or around Shimla or
at any other natural resort. But for this to realize a good intent of the
state government authority is needed with a willing promoter supported by
the Himachal government in some respects.

If you have any potential contacts with the willing promoters or with
State Administration, please persue the idea further and possibly we can
provide a turnkey solution to this including a good amount of investment
coming in some form.

hi sanjay,
Well "medical tourism" has been around from quite sometime, its
fairly new to India, with Maharashtra govt just announcing to set up
something in this field soon.

The so-called "medical tourism" has become popular in recent years.
The point of this notion is that you can not only have a rest and
admire the beauties and the sights of this or that town or region
but also undertake treatments.

You can order a room and meal in the best hotels and pensions
situated round the medical center. Having informed about your
problems beforehand. In combination with the rehabilitation program,
which is offered to you, these procedures will aid your recovery and
improve you emotional state. It will take you 2-3 weeks to be
sanitated. If you need more serious course of treatment it will take
you 4-6 weeks.

I hope now you have a fair idea what it really is , a booming
industry as said by many, also I see HP to be the best place for
something like this cos many patients are asked to go to hill
stations and get some rest so why not pamper yourself with the best
and get cured at the same time.Sounds good to me.

cheers
ankush

hi vikrant,

Well, we have been discussing hydro power for quite
some time now, the consensus being on micro projects.
The govt has failed miserably in implimenting the
idea. So it wouldbe a great idea if we can identify
the loopholes and suggest corrective measures.
About `medical tourism', I cant make out what you mean
by the term - is it health tourism (the spa culture),
opening up of our bio-diversity foreign speculations,
etc, etc...

Hello Richard

I had tried to reply to your email address instead of posting the
message on the group ... but I guess there must have been some
problem ... neways I think it was good that I CCed the message to my
other address also ... so I am going to just copy paste the message
right now
cheers
Sarju
my email in case you need it is sarju5@... ... I check my
email much more often than I check the group ...

Hello Richard

I hope you are doing well in Cambridge ... Well to tell you about
myself ... I have been in Canada for two years now ... I am doing my
Master's degree in Geography (concetration in GIS) from University
of Ottawa ...

I realized that it is very difficult to get a decent job in Canada
without the Canadian education so I am doing my master's degree
again (I had already completed MA in India ... but since my
Bachelor's degree was of three years, .. My MA was not accepted as
Master's in Canada) .... Well that is my story ....

Things were kind of pretty easy for me also ... my brother had been
in Canada for 5 years when I immigrated ... so he was of quite some
help

Well I definitely know where Palampur is ... been there many
times ... it is a nice little town (big by our himachali
standards) ... Well I am from Punjab (Distt. Hoshiarpur) actually
but i have done lots of treks in Himachal ... and in college and
university (Chandigarh) ... I had mostly Himachali friends .. pretty
much from all over himachal ... so I consider myself sort of
Honorary citizen of himachal ... I had some friends from Palampur
and Dharamsala also .... and whenever I had to go to Delhi from
Chandigarh ... I used to take that Semi Deluxe HRTC bus of Palampur
depot .. the one that reaches Chandigarh around 2 (if I can remember
it well) .... fond memories

From my experience what I think about Canada is that Life is really
hard in the begining ... if you think materialistically one does
have a lot of financial security in Canada . this is the kind of
lifestyle that is pretty hard to afford in India .... and the job
and financial security is pretty good if you do get into the right
job somehow someway .... the only thing that lacks is Social
life .... nothing beats the kind of social life we have in India ...
I think many times about what am I doing here ... what is the use of
all these materials when your friends are not with you .... I guess
I will let you figure out yourself these phases in the life of a new
immigrant ..

So what is your story ... you said you were teacher ... what was
your field of study ... are you here alone or with the family
Feel free to reach me anytime you feel like
hang on there ...

Cheers
Sarju

PS - From India life in Canada looks very rosy ... but it is a whole
different story once you come here ... I worked for a year in
Toronto at many different jobs ... I even worked in a factory ... so
I know the kind of job scene we have over here in Canada

Hi buddies !

How is the snowfall in HP? I hope Narkanda and beyond is not cut-off from the rest of the world.  Did anyone have a look at snow covered Dhaula-Dhar mountains? These ranges look gorgeous covered with the snow-sheet especially when the setting sun colours it in incredible colours. I miss these mountains very much. I would love to get the pictures of Dhaula Dhar, if anyone has clicked.

hi,
this is vikrant . incidentally came across ur group n liked the
idea....well i am from shimla n currently pursuing my degree in engg.
from maharashtra.....i liked ur idea abt marketing himachal...or
better call it 'himachal inc' .i realise so much is to be done for
this state....n the state needs visionaries who can sense the pulse
of time. i hope this endeavour of urs(now ours) will bring a change
in the apathy of the govt. towards foraying into full scale economic
development and integration with rich states of the country. to start
with i would like to have ur opinions about the mini and micro hydel
projects in the states and also about medical tourism. india has
about a potential of $6 billion in medical tourism sector and i think
places like shimla can play a pivotal role in tapping this
potential.pls suggest what needs to be done n what policies are
imperative so that this sector gets the necessary impetus.

To those who killed SK Dubey ji -

The days of black corrupt forces in India are soon to be over.
Thousands of people in all states are lined up and just raring to go
all out to expose those elements who have plundered tens of billions
of Public Money during past few decades. We know that we do not have
a honest investigative machinery or a fair speedy judicious system
in India. Media, Investigation and law and order agencies are
subservient to those sitting in high seats of power be it Industry or
politics. India knows that an honest investigation is a distant
possibility and even if this is done judiary may delay its
proceedings for an endless duration of time as it has done in the
past. In case of Dubey ji, who knows there might be some hands
involved who are in league with so called high ups that
are 'custodians' of managing india in a large circular building.

When media and investigating agencies in India dance in attendance
and to the tune of those in power how can a justice be visible. So,
there is an urgent need to convene important meetings of all right
thinking white forces in every town to discuss on the issues that
will formulate agenda to counter and expose these dark devils moving
scot free in Indian society. Let us finalize the modalities of our
actions.

Perhaps it may have just been a matter of time. The whistle that
Dubey ji blown may not have been heard prior to his murder as his was
a lone and feeble voice which could not be heard in present day
deafeaning din spread far and wide in our corrupt times but I hear
clearly and loud a nation wide triumphet blowing and chasing all
such dark forces in business, media and politics. Do you also hear
this my dear friend..?

Soon, I hope, this may flare into a country-wide stir heralding youth
and all sincere souls to unite and raise their voices loud
collectively to expose and line up not only the killers of Dubeyji
but all such people who directly or indirectly support such acts of
corruption. These leeches sitting and managing the affairs of India
will soon realize now that their days are numbered.

I am feeling oblidged to place a letter of homage for Dubeyji from
his fellow IITian..Mr Raj Kamal Jha posted by Brij Singh that I
received today in my mailbox...

It is my request to keep forwarding this mail to other lists..

Letter to a Murdered Mate

We need your ghost, Dubeyji, we need him for the
faith—and the fright

Raj Kamal Jha

DEAR DUBEYJI (if I may, that's what one of your batchmates said you
were called at IIT Kanpur): This is the first letter I'm writing to a
murder
victim. Either in fact or in fiction. I'm doing this for two, three
reasons. No, make it four. Four sounds right—it's been four days
since we first heard the whistle you blew. Four is the number of
years both of
us spent at IIT. Four sides make the Golden Quadrilateral.

1. I write because I don't know what else to do. I can't reconstruct
your body from your ashes, send it to TV studios, let anchors squeeze
your shoulder in prime-time empathy. My colleagues at The Indian
Express were the first to tell us—and the world—about the whistle you
blew one full year before you were killed. That you wrote to the
Prime Minister about your nightmares in his dream project. Nightmares
of old-fashioned corruption on a futuristic highway.

Your whistle blew hard, right in the first paragraph:Sir, don't
mention my name. And you were courageous enough to whisper it right
in the end because you didn't want to be seen as running scared—you
did the
brave, honourable thing.

They didn't.

They underlined your sentences and then they didn't give a damn. Did
you believe they would? The flunkeys who scribbled on your letter are
paid to stay permanently bent at the waist, on all fours, their lips
puckered from perpetually kissing the ground beneath their Bosses'
feet. Such people never know what to do with someone like you,
someone who stands up straight.

When we called, guess what one puckered-lip flunkey told us: ``I
don't remember the letter, send me a copy.'' We almost said, ``Go to
hell, you...'' I'll tell you tonight what that word was—our readers
don't
need to know. It will be our little secret.

The last four nights, in the Express newsroom, you've been on our
computer screens, on our front pages. We have got calls and letters
from Tokyo to Cupertino and as I write this, someone is signing the
10,848th
signature on a petition to the Prime Minister's Office (do the
puckered-lip flunkeys know how to read?).

They should send a copy to Sonia Gandhi and her tongueless tribe as
well. So that when they wipe their tri-state election tears away,
they can call up their only friend Laloo Prasad Yadav and tell
him: ``For once, think it was Satyendra Yadav who died, now can you
get moving?''

We got calls on your picture, too.

A few lines about the picture. We got it from a family friend of
yours, in New Delhi, his number from your IIT batchmate who's a cop,
one of the first to see your body. It's a studio picture, you look—
how do I say this since as an editor, I'm paid to be sceptical, to
believe that pictures have to be deceptive—but I will say it anyway:
You Look Innocent.

But I have a complaint, Dubeyji, mind mat kijiyega.

This is from one IITian to another: I wish you'd got one of your
wingmates who's got stock options to get you a pair of Armani
glasses, a Hugo Boss shirt. And instead of sitting so straight, so
stiff, I wish you'd
kind of draped yourself over a woman with breasts, a midriff to
murder for. The Times of India would have given you a nice front-page
mention.

Jokes aside, that picture of you got to us. And the second picture,
too, of your father in that cold Champaran house, his eyes vacant, a
pullover over his vest. Just like my father. I had to write to you.

2. This is a terribly selfish reason: I need to write to you. Because
it lightens the weight on my little appendage called conscience. Let
me explain. You and people like you are, in a way, responsible—I know
this
sounds harsh, so forgive me, I'm six years your elder—you are
responsible for the discomfort I feel once in a while.

You see, I did just the opposite. I, too, got into IIT, Kharagpur
1984, you must have been in Class VI then, an 11-year-old kid. I
milked the taxpayer, I got a B Tech, Mechanical, not so much
different from your
Civil. (Remember fluid dynamics, strength of materials, numerical
theory, those atrocious drawing classes?). Once, twice I, too, wanted
to give. To
teach village children! In fact, one day, I took the bus for an
interview for a job in a West Bengal village, got it, returned to
find a telegram and a
scholarship from Los Angeles. Went straight to the US Embassy.

Building a road in the heart of darkness? I'd rather read Conrad.

So I milked that US degree to get jobs, first in the US, then back
home and now I sit in a cubicle in south Delhi where the only threat
to my life, besides the cigarettes I smoke, is the prospect of a
plane falling down as it descends to land because we seem to be right
below an air corridor.

Since I graduated, I have written two novels, not even thick enough
to be used as pillows, I've bought a house in Gurgaon, haven't moved
in yet, my wife's working on it. By the way, the day she read about
you, you know the first thing she said? ``He joined IIT the year I
graduated from IIT, he's such a bachcha.'' Dubeyji, you were a kid,
you don't get killed at 31.

Call me an arrogant sonofabitch, IITians don't get murdered at 31 for
doing their job.

This weekend, we will sit in the balcony of our new house and admire
the view: right in front is the Golden Quadrilateral. From the
distance where we are, we can't make out those working there—maybe
there's
one just like you.

3. I write to you because I never knew you in life but in death, you
seem perfect. Sorry, I'm an editor, I'm banned from using such
phrases. So I'll rewrite:almost perfect.

I'm not exaggerating. You were doing what we dream of in dreams we
never talk about. You could have got yourself into a US university,
IIT Kanpur gets you that. Even if you didn't have a hot CGPA, you'd
have
smashed the GRE analytical and math, verbals you'd have brushed up.
You'd have got three profs to give you great recos, you could have
been one of us, IITians who wear our IIT on our sleeves and make sure
our hands don't get dirty. We flinch, just a little bit, whenever
someone says what did you give back to the country?

Then we spin, we philosophise, we say what the hell, we built Brand
IIT, we built Infosys. We say, don't be an old-fashioned jerk, what's
brain drain in a globalised world? Look, look, we say, we work for
McKinsey, we work for Deloitte Touche, we make CNBC drool, we work at
Goldman Sachs, if Dr Manmohan Singh was the engine of reforms, we
went and got MBAs at Wharton and IIM and became its bloody chassis,
wheels,
steering, drivers. What the hell do you mean what did you do for your
country? Do you seriously want us to go to Bihar and build a road to
prove that we care?

Well, Dubeyji, you did that.

And even if you hated your job some days, even if you felt trapped
every day every night, even if you sometimes winged it, even if your
complaint to the Prime Minister was an idealist's complaint, not a
realist's one, you are almost perfect.

Since you chose, and here I will use a cliche‚ because it's so
perfect: you chose the path less travelled.

4. And that's why I am writing to you to tell you—and I will never
tell this to your mother or father, I can never tell this to your
mother or father—your death can't be forgotten.

Because we need your ghost. We need your ghost to knock on Mr B C
Khanduri's door at night, scare him when he sleeps the sleep of a job
well done. Because we need the highway. My wife and I, in Gurgaon.

And my brother-in-law who works as a doctor in a village not far from
where you were killed. It takes him 14 hours to travel 250 km from
Patna. You were working to make his life easier, to help him move his
patients faster. To make more frequent trips to meet his daughter
who's growing up almost as fast as the highway.

A good friend and my IIT batchmate from Kharagpur, Partha
Chakroborty, is associate professor in your department at Kanpur. He
just about missed you, came down from Delaware to join Kanpur the
year you were
leaving. I asked him this morning: what does Dubeyji's story mean to
you?

I quote his email:

``On the positive side, it tells me there is hope. That there are
brave souls willing to take immense risks to stand up against
corruption. It also tells me that the education system may still be
playing a role in instilling some of virtues which make a society
strong and liveable.''

He told me to express his sorrow to your father, our reporter spent a
day at your home. Your father was crying, he didn't speak, he
couldn't speak. He didn't have to. Because you are doing the talking,
Dubeyji.

Because they may not build a memorial to you on the Aurangabad-
Barachatti highway, no Bollywood director may ever buy the rights to
your story, we may never see a Hindi version of Meryl Streep's
Silkwood, they may not enact the Dubey Disclosure Law to protect
whistleblowers like you, they may never send those puckered-lip
flunkeys home.

But the next time—and there will be a next time—there is a Satyendra
Dubey, from IIT or wherever, who walks into a lonely place to blow
the whistle, he will look right and left. He will look over his
shoulder, it will be cold, the wind will blow hard, he will then look
up. And he will see you shining there.

Hi Sarju,

Thanks for the warm welcome !!

You are right. Cambridge is the mid point of the
strech between London and Toronto on Highway 401 and
is in the west of Toronto.

Since you are in Ottawa so you are very much Ontarian.
How long you have been here? And what course are you
doing? Which place do you belong to in HP? I am from
Palampur which in Distt Kangra and famous for tea
gardens.

I did not expect that life for an immigrant would be
so difficult. You must have heard a saying "Jab
aukhali mein diya sar, to moosal se kya darr". Bas ab
to isi baat ko yaad rakh kar struggle chal rahi hai.
Dekho kab manzil aati hai?

Good luck for your studies,

Richard

Shimla (IANS) A bridegroom decided to take matters into his own hands
on the day of his wedding and ran away with his beloved, deserting the
woman his parents wanted him to wed. The incident took place in a
village in Himachal Pradesh in northern India.

The groom's furious parents promised the bride's parents that they

Hello Sanjay,
If I am not wrong you must have done Journalism from shimla and must be a student of Prof. Vepa Rao. I am also his student. I had been thinking to have a group similar to Shimla hangout for Journalist's from Shimla and HPU so that we can be in touch and know about who's who and where. So that we can be of help to each other and the future students that come from HPU. If you have  afew email ids of Journalists from HPU please forward this mail to them and ask them about this idea.

Even Vepa rao sir wanted something of this kind so that we could intercat and he too could be in touch with all at the same time.

Bye,
Regards,
Surender
