To: Government of Himachal Pradesh
Shame on us!

This year Himachal did not have a tableau at Rajpath on Republic Day. We
tried to get an answer from the spokesperson at Himachal Bhawan. They
did not have any excuse to offer.

A few days ago only, we were talking about marketing ourselves yet there
was no presence at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and again at the Republic
Day. Do we have nothing to showcase?

Please sign this petition and ask for some plain answers from the
Himachal Pradesh government on why Himachal's participation is not
ensured in such events.

Seize the day !

Indian vegetable exporter bags $1.7-mn US order

MUMBAI: Leading mushroom and vegetable exporter Himalya International
Ltd has bagged orders worth $1.7 million from a US food service company,
the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) informed on Monday.

"The company has kick-started the New Year by way of a huge order of 80
containers valued at $1.7 million for its canned mushrooms from a major
US food service company. The delivery schedule spans from February to
October 2006," the BSE statement said.

This order will result in the Himachal Pradesh headquartered company, a
major mushroom producer, raising its production by 50 percent compared
to the corresponding quarter of the last financial year.

The company has over 50 farmers supplying produce that are processed for
exports under a contract-farming programme for production and supply of
vegetables and mushrooms.

The company's new facility in Himachal Pradesh for mozzarella cheese
from buffalo milk in collaboration with a US-based Winona has also begun
its first phase of production.

A technical team from the foreign collaborator had visited the unit
during December 2005 to oversee the entire first phase of production.

At full capacity, the company will be processing 15 million pounds of
specialty cheese per annum valued at $25 million. The plant is also
equipped to manufacture batter and breaded appetizers, mozzarella
sticks, mushrooms, eggplants and onion rings.

The company has entered into a marketing arrangement with Artiginale
Italiano Inc. for the entire annual produce, which will be marketed in
the US.

The company has also commenced processing a 1.6 million pounds baby
potatoes order for a retail chain headquartered in Canada.

Hi friends,

I was browing the pictures in photo albums and was so happy to see beautiful views of HP clicked by different folks. Could I make a request to everyone who posts the pictures in the album to write the name of the place rather than writing the name of the photographer or giving your own personal compliment to the view or the picture. This will enable the viewer to identify the place. I have been to few places in these pictures but there are some sceneries which are so inviting that I can only make a trip if I know the names of those locations. I am living in Canada and planning visiting my family this year.

Terrorist attack on IISc

On Dec 28, 2005 an international conference under progress and being
attended by both National and International delegates from all over
the world was attacked by terrorists (numbers are still not known) at
19:30 hrs. Prof Puri was killed in the attack and other four people
were seriously injured including Prof Vijay Chandru and other
distinguished scientists. This was the n-th time (where n -->
infinity) that terrorists attacked the innocent civilians and
scientists on the Indian soil. These attacks are a coordinated effort
by Islamic jihadis, supported by some elements with vested interests
to destroy this country and its indigenous culture and civilization.
They are leaving no stone unturned to achieve their goals. To name few
of the terrorist attacks in the recent times, Bombay blasts, IC-814
hijacking, Delhi blasts, attack on Indian parliament and now attack on
IISc are few of them. Unfortunately, the Indian Government has been
totally insensitive towards these terrorist attacks which are
affecting and hampering the lives of innocent people and the progress
of the country. Instead of taking serious action against those who are
responsible for propagating these heinous ideologies, gun-culture and
human bombs, the attitude of the government is really disappointing.
On one side, government issues strong statements to fight the
terrorism, but these strong statements are not converted into action.
The government is trying to solve a 21st century problem of terrorism
and Islamic jihadism with 18th century laws (framed by british). For
IISc researchers, it is like sending a moon/mars mission with
feathers attached to the rocket to ensure its bird-like flight with no
propulsion devices. It is the time that government comes out of the
shell and vote bank politics and takes strong actions to fight this
Islamic terrorism/jihadism emanating from neighbouring countries,
otherwise, this civilization shall again perish into the darkness for
centuries. After the destruction of Takshashila and Nalanda
Universities by Islamic invaders, it took almost thousand years for
India to setup world class institutes like IISc, IITs and other
institutes of repute. The government which is responsible for standing
upto the expectations of 1 billion Indians shall take the strong
decision to save the lives of the people and these reputed institutes,
otherwise, we may have to wait for another thousand years to reach
this level of innovation and scientific culture, if we let these
Islamic jihadis to overpower us.

Simply increasing the security around these universities will not help
much. Because this will hamper the working conditions of the
scientists and obstruct the free flow of information and environment
of mutual discussion among the scientific community. Therefore we all
Scientists, researchers, engineers and scientific workers request the
govt of India to take strong decisions and convert them into actions
to prevent any future attacks and give severe punishments to all those
responsible for these terrorist attacks on Indian citizens. We hope
that govt shows a strong will power in terms of action (and not empty
rhetoric ) to fight and erradicate this dangerous ideology of Islamic
terrorism/jihadism and save this great culture and civilization of India.

Hi,

Well seems like the gaping hole just got bigger by 5,000 crores. It would be interesting to see how the concerned parties  here jiggle their account books for this additional cost. In its current form electricty production cost of Rs 6 per unit is simply mind boggling and unsaleable for the Khab project. NJPC also can`t account for this cost alone. Disregard for sufficient precautionary measures while planning NJPC has lead to this. Now the "Satluj Jal vidyut Pariyojna" and Perchu happening are being given as other reasons for the construction of Khab dam, to save embarassment.

Fact is, we do need a dam now to save NJPC. This should be accepted as a reality and not dingle dangled with other reasons.

Moreover, the current tension against the construction of tunnels carrying Sutlej water is also a valid concern. The H.P. Govt should take a lead in getting the issues solved by taking in confidence the local village councils, the project contractors and the Govt. of India. Villagers concerned of drying water table and landslides which causes damage to the orchards and homes due to under ground explosions and boring of tunnles is valid. Remember water is a  precious commodity up in the mighty cold himalayan deserts.
One way could be providing assured employment to one memeber of the affected families a permanent job in such a mega project. The right to livelihood is afterall a worthy cause to defend.
Regards,
Tenzin

Khab dam to be highest in country
Rakesh Lohumi
Tribune News Service
Shimla, November 23
The 275-m high storage dam proposed to be built at Khab in Kinnaur district to tame the Sutlej will be the highest in the country.
Specifically designed with the objective of protecting the downstream hydroelectric projects from damage due to excessive silt and floods, the dam will cost over Rs 5,000 crore. It will be the second highest concrete gravity dam of the world after the 285-m high Grand Dixiens Dam in Switzerland. At present the 261-m Tihri dam is the highest in the country, followed by 225-m Bhakra dam.
The abnormally high level of silt in the river has made it imperative for the Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam, which originally planned to construct a run-of-the-river hydroelectric project at Khab by boring a 22-km-long tunnel, to go in for a storage project. The 1500-MW Nathpa Jhakri project was repeatedly shutdown due to excessive silt during the recent monsoon, which cost the nigam over Rs 650 crore.
The pre-feasibility report prepared by the nigam indicates that a high dam was required to arrest the 12 million cubic metre (MCM) of silt which the snow-fed Sutlej and Spiti, its main tributary, bring down annually. Further, the structure must be able to take care of eventualities like bursting of the Parechu-like water body which could bring 74 MCM of water in a gush.
As per the prevalent standards, a storage dam must have a minimum life of 25 years and taking the silt load and Parechu factor into consideration the minimum height of the dam works out to 275-m, explains Mr Vijay Chopra, General Manager, Infrastructure Design. The project has been designed to generate 1020 MW of power, but the cost of generation will come to about Rs 6 per unit, almost double the normal cost, because of the construction of dam. The cost of the project has been estimated at Rs 10,000 crore and the dam will account for half of it. Thus, to ensure viability the projects located right down to the Bhakra dam, which will directly benefit from the construction of dam, have to share the cost, he adds.
The reservoir formed by the dam will extend up to a point just 4 km short of the Indo-China border at Shipki La. Only three villages will be submerged in the sparsely populated tribal area. Even otherwise, villages like Leo which bore the brunt of Parechu fury, are to be relocated at a safer height from the river bank.
The power producers of the Sutlej basin have already formed a forum to address the common issues but the Centre will have to work out some formula for cost sharing to make the highest storage dam a reality.

bringing to Himachal Pradesh the kind of investment that could make
this small mountainous state a hub of eco tourism and a must try
destination for any avid skier. In the last week of October, Ford
flew to shimla to present the project report of his Himachal Ski
Village (HSV) to stat chief minister Virbhadra Singh. With a MoU and
a go ahead from the state cabinet now in his bad, Ford hopes to have
the technical clearances by the end of the year and targeting a 2009
opening.
> HSV has been conceptualized as a world-class ski-facility in
the Dhauladhar ranges of the Himalayas, above the Kullu-Manali area
that Indian tourists throng in summer. The chosen site is already
popular with the international heli-skiing set. It has the finest of
the skiing slopes and snow that will satisfy both beginners and
international skiers. The first phase of the project involves an
investment of $135 million. This means construction of 250 hotel
rooms, including separate villas, installation of ski facilities and
setting up of the ropeway gondolas that will bring the tourists to
the ski village. The concept design of the 50-acre village borrows
from the traditional Himalayan style architecture and has been done
by Jack Zehren & Associates from Vail in Colorado. There will be
handicrafts market, called Kullu Haat, which will offer local
villagers and craftsmen employment opportunities. A theatre complex
will host Indian and international music concerts and
> other performing arts. Talks are also on with Apollo group to
build a hospital area in the area.
>
> Feel of the himalays
>
> While the state government has promised to address the issue of
infrastructure, like the ramshackle Kullu airport, which can only
take 25 seater aircraft, Ford doesn't not want to foist a five star,
glitzy ambience on the area. "The people who visit should get a feel
of the Himalayas as they are," he says.
> According to HSV`s financial officer Glen Trotman, the
investment commitment of $135 million could grow into $500 million in
the later phases. "We want to see what the market is like before
going into other phases", he points out. Ford is aiming at tourists
from India as well as the high spending segment from Europe, the Us
and Australia, to keep the cash reister ticking. Indeed, Ford and
his childhood friend, John Sims, who is managing director,
repeatedly stress on their commitment to India, which has already
found expression in an industrial project as well as a Vedic
planetarium in West Bengal. A prominent Indian that HSV has on its
board of directors is banker Nasser Munjee.
> The HP government on the face of it, appears fired by the
project. To begin with, there will be royalty and lease payments to
the state government and the village communities. The state will
also benefit from the 10 percent luxury tax that the project will
garner from its clients. It will also get additional revenue from
the sale of power. On its own, HSV will provide direct employment to
1000 persons and indirect employment to another 3000 persons. Asked
for a ballpark figure, trotman told Business India that the
financial windfall accruing to HP could be anything up to 2 percent
of the total cost of the project. In any case the luxury tax and the
royalty paid to the state will be more than double the current
annual tourism revenues (stagnant at 40 crore). Ford, on his part,
talks of a "ripple effect" the project will have in the area on the
hospitality and tertiary sectors.
> There is another attractive proposition that the project has

Hi all,

Winter Olympics in HImachal ?
A wishful thought indeed, but if things are as bright as they seem. Who knows?
I just laid my hands on this article and i just couldnt help but share it. Since this wasn`t available online. I typed it from the magazine. I am so glad that things are shaping up fast. This would indeed be a milestone in Himachal emerging as the forerunner in eco-tourism and offering quality health services. I just hope that this project go through unscatched with common understanding and political wills from all political parties.

regards,
Tenzin

Ford on a Ski Romp.

Alfred Ford, great grandson of the legendary Henry Ford, is bringing to Himachal Pradesh the kind of investment that could make this small mountainous state a hub of eco tourism and a must try destination for any avid skier. In the last week of October, Ford flew to shimla to present the project report of his Himachal Ski Village (HSV) to stat chief minister Virbhadra Singh. With a MoU and a go ahead from the state cabinet now in his bad, Ford hopes to have the technical clearances by the end of the year and targeting a 2009 opening.
HSV has been conceptualized as a world-class ski-facility in the Dhauladhar ranges of the Himalayas, above the Kullu-Manali area that Indian tourists throng in summer. The chosen site is already popular with the international heli-skiing set. It has the finest of the skiing slopes and snow that will satisfy both beginners and international skiers. The first phase of the project involves an investment of $135 million. This means construction of 250 hotel rooms, including separate villas, installation of ski facilities and setting up of the ropeway gondolas that will bring the tourists to the ski village. The concept design of the 50-acre village borrows from the traditional Himalayan style architecture and has been done by Jack Zehren & Associates from Vail in Colorado. There will be handicrafts market, called Kullu Haat, which will offer local villagers and craftsmen employment opportunities. A theatre complex will host Indian and international music concerts and other performing arts. Talks are also on with Apollo group to build a hospital area in the area.
Feel of the himalays
While the state government has promised to address the issue of infrastructure, like the ramshackle Kullu airport, which can only take 25 seater aircraft, Ford doesn’t not want to foist a five star, glitzy ambience on the area. “The people who visit should get a feel of the Himalayas as they are,” he says.
According to HSV`s financial officer Glen Trotman, the investment commitment of $135 million could grow into $500 million in the later phases. “We want to see what the market is like before going into other phases”, he points out. Ford is aiming at tourists from India as well as the high spending segment from Europe, the Us and Australia, to keep the cash reister ticking. Indeed, Ford and his childhood friend, John Sims, who is managing director, repeatedly stress on their commitment to India, which has already found expression in an industrial project as well as a Vedic planetarium in West Bengal. A prominent Indian that HSV has on its board of directors is banker Nasser Munjee.
The HP government on the face of it, appears fired by the project. To begin with, there will be royalty and lease payments to the state government and the village communities. The state will also benefit from the 10 percent luxury tax that the project will garner from its clients. It will also get additional revenue from the sale of power. On its own, HSV will provide direct employment to 1000 persons and indirect employment to another 3000 persons. Asked for a ballpark figure, trotman told Business India that the financial windfall accruing to HP could be anything up to 2 percent of the total cost of the project. In any case the luxury tax and the royalty paid to the state will be more than double the current annual tourism revenues (stagnant at 40 crore). Ford, on his part, talks of a “ripple effect” the project will have in the area on the hospitality and tertiary sectors.
There is another attractive proposition that the project has thrown up. Once it gets going, India will have another major tourism and winter sport infrastructure. It may get a chance to bid to the winter Olympics. And Himachal Pradesh, always short on investment, will be showcased worldwide as an up market, safe and eco-friendly destination.
Ford, a director of the Ford Motor Company and an active investor in the equities market, property development and software ventures, is aware of the risks involved in the project, particularly after the recent earthquake that cut such a destructive swathe across the Himalayas. But, as he puts it, “nothing ventured, nothing gained”.
