Manali in a mess
Kuldeep Chauhan

Manali is in a mess which is becoming worse every year. Hordes of tourists, health magicians from Rajsthan, sex workers, migrant traders from Chandni Chowk and pheriwalas from Jammu and Kashmir and migrant labourers and beggars from the plains and over 10,000 tourist vehicle- all pushing the carrying capacity of the town to unrepairable limits.

The tourists are taking back bitter memories of the traffic jams and the potholed roads and local residents face traffic hazards daily as the bypass roads and the two bridge projects aimed to decongest this haphazardly developed hill station have yet to see the light of day. The residents say that everybody is taking something from Manali, but nobody is contributing to save the town from death and decay.

The biggest offenders are planners and the Manali Nagar Panchayat, which have contributed to the mushroom growth in this hill station for the past 26 years. The big multi-roomed haphazard concrete monsters—hotels—have rapped this tourist town beyond repair. Now, these monsters have spread their tentacles into its surroundings: Solang valley, Nasogi, Dungri, Kanihal, Old Manali, Vashisht, Prini, Aleo and other suburban villages.

Dear Viplav

All is not so well with the Ski Village in Kullu valley. The dieties are still divided. No doubt it will be a massive investement to the state and the locals will benefit but the project has been politicised with the BJP talking all together different tune.

I wish this project should be given a go-ahead and the Govt must look into introducing the  Chanshal ranges in Rohru to the same concept. If only the Raja of Kullu would not see the whole project as his political waterloo..

... Nobody in the BJP wants the facts to get out: that the powerful PS of a man they all now claim would have been Prime Minister one day not only did cocaine but also procured cocaine for his leader’s family, hardly reflects well on the party. If the rumours about cellphone records - and the coke dealers whose numbers appear on them - are true, then this tends to confirm what we always suspected: that the crores that were illegally collected by the Safdarjung Road gang went into drinks, drugs and wild partying.

What are the five thumb rules for a layman to take care of his heart?
Dr Devi Shetty:
1. Diet - Less of carbohydrate, more of protein, less oil
2. Exercise - Half an hour's walk, at least five days a week; avoid lifts and avoid sitting for a longtime
3. Quit smoking
4. Control weight
5. Control blood pressure and sugar
-------
Is eating non-veg food (fish) good for the heart?
Dr Devi Shetty: No
--------
It's still a grave shock to hear that some apparently healthy person gets a cardiac arrest. How do we understand it in perspective?
Dr Devi Shetty: This is called silent attack; that is why we recommend everyone past the age of 30 to undergo routine health checkups.
--------
Are heart diseases hereditary?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes
---------
What are the ways in which the heart is stressed? What practices do you suggest to de-stress?
Dr Devi Shetty: Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection in everything in life.
-------
Is walking better than jogging or is more intensive exercise required to keep a healthy heart?
Dr Devi Shetty: Walking is better than jogging since jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints
---------
You have done so much for the poor and needy. What has inspired you to do so?
Dr Devi Shetty: Mother Theresa, who was my patient.
--------
Can people with low blood pressure suffer heart diseases?
Dr Devi Shetty: Extremely rare
--------
Does cholesterol accumulates right from an early age (I'm currently only 22) or do you have to worry about it only after you are above 30 years of age?
Dr Devi Shetty: Cholesterol accumulates from childhood.
---------
How do irregular eating habits affect the heart?
Dr Devi Shetty: You tend to eat junk food when the habits are irregular  and your body's enzyme release for digestion gets confused.
---------
How can I control cholesterol content without using medicines?
Dr Devi Shetty: Control diet, walk and eat walnut.
---------
Can yoga prevent heart ailments?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yoga helps.
----------
Which is the best and worst food for the heart?
Dr Devi Shetty: Best food is fruits worst are oil.
---------
Which oil is better - gingili, groundnut, sunflower, saffola, olive?
Dr Devi Shetty: All oils are bad; the so-called best oil company has the largest marketing budget.
--------
What is the routine checkup one should go through? Is there any specific test?
Dr Devi Shetty: Routine blood test to ensure sugar, cholesterol is ok. Check BP, Treadmill test after an echo.
--------
How different was it in treating Noor Fatima, the little kid from Pakistan?
Dr Devi Shetty: It was extremely difficult, Because of the media attention. As far as the medical treatment is concerned, she is like any other child
with a complex heart problem.
--------
What are the first aid steps to be taken on a heart attack?
Dr Devi Shetty: Help the person into a sleeping position, put an  aspirin tablet under the tongue with a sorbitrate tablet if available, and rush him
to a coronary care unit since the maximum casualty takes place within the first hour.
-------
How do you differentiate between pain caused by a heart attack and that caused due to gastric trouble?
Dr Devi Shetty: Extremely difficult without ECG.
---------
What is the main cause of a steep increase in heart problems amongst youngsters? I see people of about 30-40 yrs of age having heart attacks and serious
heart problems.
Dr Devi Shetty: Increased awareness has increased incidents. Also, edentary lifestyles, smoking, junk food, lack of exercise in a country where people are genetically three times more vulnerable for heart attacks than Europeans and Americans.
-------
Is it possible for a person to have BP outside the normal range  of 120/80 and yet be perfectly healthy?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes.
------
Marriages within close relatives can lead to heart problems for the child. Is it true?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes, co-sanguinity leads to congenital abnormalities and you may not have a software engineer as a child
--------
Many of us have an irregular daily routine and many a times we have to stay late nights in office. Does this affect our heart? What precautions would you recommend?
Dr Devi Shetty: When you are young, nature protects you against all these irregularities. However, as you grow older, respect the biological clock.
--------
Will taking anti-hypertensive drugs cause some other complications (short / long term)?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes, most drugs have some side effects. However, modern anti-hypertensive drugs are extremely safe.
--------
Will consuming more coffee/tea lead to heart attacks?
Dr Devi Shetty: No.
-------
Are asthma patients more prone to heart disease?
Dr Devi Shetty: No.
------------
How would you define junk food?
Dr Devi Shetty:
Fried food like Kentucky, McDonalds, samosas, and even masala dosas.
----------
You mentioned that Indians are three times more vulnerable. What is the reason for this, as Europeans and Americans also eat a lot of junk food?
Dr Devi Shetty: Every race is vulnerable to some disease and unfortunately, Indians are vulnerable for the most expensive disease.
----------
Does consuming bananas help reduce hypertension?
Dr Devi Shetty: No.
----------
Can a person help himself during a heart attack (Because we see a lot of forwarded emails on this)?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes. Lie down comfortably and put an aspirin tablet of any  description under the tongue and ask someone to take you to the nearest coronary
care unit without any delay and do not wait for the ambulance since most of the time, the ambulance does not turn up.
----------
Do, in any way, low white blood cells and low hemoglobin count lead to heart problems?
Dr Devi Shetty: No. But it is ideal to have normal hemoglobin level to increase your exercise capacity.
-----------
Sometimes, due to the hectic schedule we are not able to exercise. So, does walking while doing daily chores at home or climbing the stairs in the house, work as a substitute for exercise?
Dr Devi Shetty: Certainly. Avoid sitting continuously for more than half an hour and even the act of getting out of the chair and going to another chair and sitting helps a lot.
------------
Is there a relation between heart problems and blood sugar?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes. A strong relationship since diabetics are more vulnerable to heart attacks than non-diabetics.
----------
What are the things one needs to take care of after a heart operation?
Dr Devi Shetty: Diet, exercise, drugs on time. Control cholesterol, BP, weight.
---------------
Are people working on night shifts more vulnerable to heart disease when compared to day shift workers?
Dr Devi Shetty: No.
-------------
What are the modern anti-hypertensive drugs?
Dr Devi Shetty: There are hundreds of drugs and your doctor will chose the right combination for your problem, but my suggestion is to avoid the drugs and
go for natural ways of controlling blood pressure by walk, diet to reduce weight and changing attitudes towards lifestyles.
------------
Does dispirin or similar headache pills increase the risk of heart attacks?
Dr Devi Shetty: No.
----------
Why is the rate of heart attacks more in men than in women?
Dr Devi Shetty: Nature protects women till the age of 45.
---------
How can one keep the heart in a good condition?
Dr Devi Shetty: Eat a healthy diet, avoid junk food, exercise everyday, do not smoke and, go for a health checkup if you are past the age of 30 for at least once in two yrs. And work very hard...

Enjoy.....Life..........

bnityin

Organic farming is the only way for the apple farmers of Himachal Pradesh to make an impact in the global market as their output has been dropping due to the use of chemical fertiliser.

So says a team of Swiss and Indian experts who have just ended their field trip to the hill state to raise awareness about the need for adopting organic farming.

Apple is the main cash crop of Himachal Pradesh and, along with neighbouring Jammu and Kashmir and Uttaranchal, the state accounts for almost the entire apple production of the country.

But the Indian apple is not able to compete with the best in the international market as its quality is far behind the fruit grown by organic methods particularly in countries like Switzerland.

"The heavy use of chemical fertiliser and pesticide by Himachal apple farmers has degraded the soil of the orchards and damaged the ecosystem. Because of that the inputs have been going up, but the output has been dropping steadily for farmers," said Samuel B. Moser, a Swiss expert.

"The pattern is the same in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttaranchal as well," Moser added.

"During our weeklong awareness campaign we surprisingly found 80 farmers already practising organic farming on the orchards with good results. But this is only a microscopic minority," said Tej Pratap Singh, executive director of the International Competency Centre for Organic Farming in Bangalore.

"Actually the advantage of adopting organic farming is twofold as it reduces cost and raises production," Singh said.

"Even though the state government has done little to promote and manufacture organic fertiliser, farmers can take the initiative and produce organic manure on their farms," said Singh.

The experts said the Indian apple must be produced organically instead of chemically on a large scale in order to compete in the international market.

This would not only fetch higher returns but help in greatly restoring the eco-system damaged due to the use of harmful chemical fertiliser and pesticide.

"China, the world's largest producer of apples, has already started producing the fruit with the help of organic farming in a big way as it is more in demand in the international market. So must India," said Singh.

OK! Bye then. Nice being with you. Take care, huh?”

“It was great talking to you and catching up. Now you’d better keep in touch. Bye sweetie, take care!”

“Dear Mom, this is just a short mail to tell you that I’m doing fine here. Couldn’t catch up with you earlier but I’ll be more in touch now. Bye. Love you. Take care!”

This “take care” business bamboozles me. Take care of what? Everyone is always advising everyone else to take care. So am I to take care to lock the gate after they have left? Or am I to take care to dust my shoes on the doormat before I enter my house? Or must I take care to modulate my voice to an acceptable level when I speak to the servant?
Perhaps it’s all about appearance! I should be taking care to wear clean and ironed clothes or should I take care to brush my teeth before I go to bed? Aha! Got it. I’ve got to take care to groom my pet dog. Or maybe, I should take care to cover the milk pateela.

I was finally a bit irritated with this phrase after I’d been asked 18 times that day to “take care, haan!”. I demanded of the last “take carers” just what it was that I was supposed to be taking care of?

“It’s just a phrase” they replied. “Why get so hassled about it? Just chill yaar!”

CHILL! That’s another one of those phrases! Chill what? Chill the milk? Chill the coke? Chill the water? Its funny how all these “phrases” just leave you dangling midair. What do they mean? Where do they come from? How come the world is using them with impunity with nobody challenging them?
I decided to enquire of one of my friend in the Department of English in Panjab University. Surely the academia was concerned about this insouciant use of phrases that left you floundering for meaning.
“Oh, yes. One has noticed the use of such new-age phrases among the metropolitan English speakers,” said she “But why let it disturb you? Let it go. Enjoy!”

Oh! Does it ever end? Enjoy? Enjoy what? Enjoy a movie? Enjoy a walk? Enjoy some golguppas at the chaatwalas? How could such unqualified “phrases” have acquired such significance in the Queen’s language?
I finally convinced myself that I shouldn’t react so strongly at what were after all only “signing off” phrases which started as being “different” for most users. Too bad they are getting so overused and as such, clichéd and dull, dull, dull.

Guess I’ve got to be happy with that. Ciao then. Be seeing you. Till then, chill, enjoy and do take care, haan?

Hi

Was away for more than a week due to some pressing matter at Chandigarh...

Yes Tenzin.. absolutely true... there is a pesticide for everything and whoever said.. "an apple a day.. keeps a doctor away" must be turning upside down in the grave.. :-))

Apple farming is on the downslide and the average crop is getting lesser and lesser each year. Other than the traditional apple growing belts, new orchards have not come up other than the Karsog Valley. Karsog Valley is going to be the next apple belt of Himachal Pradesh.

Ten years down the line the older apple belt will be finished. No new plantation has succeeded in this area. People will have to look for alternatives and move towards other stone fruits. The economics of farming has gone very high. Small farmers in the area I live, are now moving to collective farming to share costs. These farmers are selling produce directly to cold store chains right in there farms to save on packaging and transportation costs.

The biggest problem with farming is there is no proper mechanism of selling. A farmer is at the complete mercy of the arthiya and has to accept whatever is offered. The rates offered  when compared to the input cost is minimal.. Labor inputs have sky rocketed since the disturbance in Nepal..

Talking of the Vision-2015, the Govt. doesn't have a vison for tomorrow morning, what to speak of 2015. The babus and the netas will chip in only when they get scent of the money.. The packaging box being manufactured by the Govt costs more after the subsidy than the one being sold by Zirakpur based manufacturers right at your doorstep and the quality is a notch higher. The Govt should bring in a white paper on the subsidy offered on agriculture till date... That would be the mother of all scandels!!!

Moving to another topic, I was in Chandigarh for a week... The temprature has shot up and coming from 9,500 feet in the hills it was brutal on my body to take up all the heat for a couple of days.. I did noticed a very pecular thing on the roads. Almost every vehicle waived by the traffic police for checking bears HP registration number.. In a weeks time my papers were checked almost 20 times, to speak off!!! I found the cops pounding on HP numbers with the famous cheeky grin.. asking for papers of all sorts
.... reminds me my days in Mumbai when the Pandu would never stop my bike on a single entry road with no sign and another pandu standing on the other end.. asking for money... aiilla.. but then they never discriminated on any particular state number vehicles... They beleived in One India, and would collect money from all MH, GJ, MP, AP numbers.. :-))

Comparatively moving out on Chandigarh roads had become pain as in a day twice or thrice my papers would get checked.. Has it happened with other guys? Would like to hear more stories and see if something could be done to avoid this harrasment..

Coming back to 9500 feet has always been welcome.. There is still chill in the breeze.. the flowers are all pink.. the water as fresh as ever and no pandus in over 20 km in the area...

Thanks for reading all along

Regards
Nitin

Hi

Private or Govt pesticides. It is finally the farmers who need more awareness. i will talk more about apples since i know more abt that.
While there are some farmers who just wont use pesticides and let their crop go black and brown. There are others who would just use anything which comes to market.
Even without govt pesticdes, private pesticides are in the market for ages now. Govt pesticdes are never in stock when one needs them most. Now if one goes to private shop, there is just pesticide for everything. For making leaves greener, for making falling of leaves stop, for making apples redder, for making them small and sometimes large in size, for dropping extra apple buds in flowering stage, pesticides to remove weed around the ground,  You name it and there is pesticide for everything.
I have seen all of them doing brisk sale. Sometimes to the peril of apple crop. A small farmer goes to the shop and seeing these fancy pesticudes, they come back buying something different from what they went to buy.

With the near absoulte surety of cheap chinese apple flooding the indian market in near time. I am not sure how Himachali apples will face the middle class indian market. Already American, New Zeland and Australian apple is giving sleepless nights and has snatched high end market from Kinnaur Apples. And they compete mostly in organic apples category. Our himachali apples cant even be exported because most of them would be too toxic with pesticides.

Someohow now its time for himachal govt to come up with a whitepaper on APPLE 2015. Where do they see Himachal Apple in 10 years time and how they plan to do it. Just simply letting farmers let lose with pesticide is not the answer. Finally what we will end up blowing away is our Apple crop.

Tenzin

Here is some good news for the farmers in the state as the Govt is considering to move away from the pesticide trade. There have been complaints of companies even pushing expired pesticides by repacking and selling through the Govt agencies causing heavy losses to the farmers. Procuring and selling of pesticides had become a money making racket for some of the employees in the Govt.. Also since after signing of the MOU with the Central Govt, the state Govt is in no position to sell this garbage in the name of subsidy to the farmers..

Hi.

Are you aware of the latest proposal of HR Dept (Govt of India).........they are planning to increase the quota of reserved seats by 27%......which will make the reserved seats to 49.x%........leaving barely 50% seats to be filled on the basis of merit.

Are you ready to face the fact that - Our half of our nation will be nurtured not on the basis of merit but some other considerations.

Hi Nityin

I think it is really unfortunate and disturbing to go through this.

I ll suggest that you ask him to meet you. And tender in written an apology saying he is sorry and he means it. And next time if he does that again. You will turn him to police. If he wants his mother to be there, fine enough. The mothers are awalys sensible and this will make sure such sort of unruly behaviour doesnt happen.

Thing is if he is sorry and he means it. He would not repeat the behaviour. But if he takes it that you are not taking things seriously and you are easily forgiving. Then this thing might possibly happen again.

Reporting to police as an FIR would only make police act on it. But that would also means all sort of hassles for you too. You know how it is. Best way is to resolve it amicably yet firmly.

Regards
Tenzin

hi Nityin,

this is really sad that youth of our county try these kinds of thing
to get some kick out of it. May be the real reason is that that guy
is a dunb, or y else someone call on a cell phone when whole world
knows that the called person gets the nmber flashed on his screa.

Reporting to the police might not help, as police in our beloved
country is never intrested in solving any thing. Maybe only thing
that you can do is to tell that guy that you know some big shot
police officee in his area and that should frighten him.

on the other hand during my school days i had also given some
cranked calls, but thank god caller id or cell phones were not
available at that time.
lucky me

A gated development for the subcontinent's super-rich ... and a funeral for a cotton farmer, forced into suicide because of spiralling poverty. India's economic growth is dazzling but, in the new, globalised era, its inequalities are becoming even more polarised, discovers Randeep Ramesh

A blue-suited Boris Becker strokes his chin, shakes his head and speaks into the lens. "No, no. I'm sorry, I can't think of any place I like to live in as much as this place." Flanked by wooden, Swiss-style chalets and manicured, verdant lawns the former Wimbledon champion then saunters off, presumably to find his place. The advert, which has been shown repeatedly on Indian television screens for the past month, promotes the impression that Becker wants to live the rest of his life in the shadow of the Sahyadri Hills, an oasis of greenery in the dust of the Indian state of Maharashtra.
