more than 10 people died in an road accident in shimla.
most of them were on their daily commute to their offices and colleges.

its high time, insidents like these keep on happening very regularly.
Govt should see that speed rules are followed and drivers have propper
driving skills, now days it has become very easy to get license.
i think those driving commercial vechicals shouls me given special
traning and should also me subject of tests regularly.

hi abhishek

i think you should change either your view or way of expression. the word punjab really hurt me. i am agree with you that tourists are creating lots of problems in Himachal. but our state govt and we people are also failed to maintain the beauty of Himachal and playing major role to spoil the himachal's beauty . I still remember lots of people in my neighbourhood in my home city ( in Himachal ) had habit to dump garbage on rodsides instead of putting in garbage canns. also there is no recycle unit to get rid of garbage in proper manner so municipality dump the city's garbage in beautiful surrounding jungles. and it happen in almost every city and village  they are not outsiders so what you says about them ? you can't stop people to get settle  there like the same way nobody can stop you to settle in any other state like Punjab.

i am living in canada rigth now. born in punjab and belongs to punjabi family but moved in himachal when i was in 4th class. my father was supplier of water pumps, Diesel Engines and other mechanical goods to IPH & local farmers when i was not even born. hamirpur was just like a village that time and it was not even connected properly with roads. via Una was the best connecting road  to hamirpur but still buses had to passes through Khads to get to Hamirpur.

but my father was hard working enough to keep supply continue to deptt. and villagers even in bad weather and seasons. he had to walk many kms to fix water supply schemes in interior locations. i don't wannt to go in detail but the one thing would like to mention that IPH incouraged my father to open branch office in hamirpur so that they could be in touch with my father in case of emergengy for spareparts. there was no other supplier that time. later on we moved in himachal i got my education in hamachal till graduation. i was founder member of HP Adventure Sports Association and also i was memebr and started few other socities in Hamirpur.   i consider my self more himachal. i love it like a crazy. but even after spending more than 20 years of my life people used to call us punjabi and didn't accepted us. my father spend whole life in himachal but people liek you  nerver accepted us and considers us outsiders, no matter how important role my father played there. most of the old water supply schemes in distt. hamirpur are started by my father.

now i am living in canada for many years but nobody ever asked form me that which country i am from.  i want to go back and get settle in India and in himachal only not in punjab as i spent my life in himachal so feel close to himachal. even though most of my himachali friends are working and settled in punjab, chandigarh and delhi. don't you think punjab should be saved from outsiders like himachalis and bihari too ? i don't think so b'coz my mind is not dirty like others. moreover we live in a free country where anybody can move anywhere within country. but it hurts to me when i meet sick people like you. instead of blaming to outsides we himachalis should improve ourself 1st. if we could open recycle unit and follow home/building constructions bylaws we can save himachal. so stop blaming outsiders and get your brain fix 1st. after a long time i heard this outsiders word but even then i consider myself himachali and sick minded people like you can't change my identity. i don't like to yell at people and quite by nature but when meet people like you i can't stop myself. looks that you are not in himachal rigth now, may be you lives in abroad. how you feel if even after spending most of live in a diff. state of country you are considered as outsider of may be f.........indian  ( i know how the descrimination level in UK is ) ?

i don't think dirty mind people like you shoould be given any plateform to express their sick opnion. so request everybody to bycott you and should be removed from the group otherwise i may have to think myself to cancell my subscription.

take care

Manali in a mess
Kuldeep Chauhan

Manali is in a mess which is becoming worse every year. Hordes of tourists, health magicians from Rajsthan, sex workers, migrant traders from Chandni Chowk and pheriwalas from Jammu and Kashmir and migrant labourers and beggars from the plains and over 10,000 tourist vehicle- all pushing the carrying capacity of the town to unrepairable limits.

The tourists are taking back bitter memories of the traffic jams and the potholed roads and local residents face traffic hazards daily as the bypass roads and the two bridge projects aimed to decongest this haphazardly developed hill station have yet to see the light of day. The residents say that everybody is taking something from Manali, but nobody is contributing to save the town from death and decay.

The biggest offenders are planners and the Manali Nagar Panchayat, which have contributed to the mushroom growth in this hill station for the past 26 years. The big multi-roomed haphazard concrete monsters—hotels—have rapped this tourist town beyond repair. Now, these monsters have spread their tentacles into its surroundings: Solang valley, Nasogi, Dungri, Kanihal, Old Manali, Vashisht, Prini, Aleo and other suburban villages.

Dear Viplav

All is not so well with the Ski Village in Kullu valley. The dieties are still divided. No doubt it will be a massive investement to the state and the locals will benefit but the project has been politicised with the BJP talking all together different tune.

I wish this project should be given a go-ahead and the Govt must look into introducing the  Chanshal ranges in Rohru to the same concept. If only the Raja of Kullu would not see the whole project as his political waterloo..

... Nobody in the BJP wants the facts to get out: that the powerful PS of a man they all now claim would have been Prime Minister one day not only did cocaine but also procured cocaine for his leader’s family, hardly reflects well on the party. If the rumours about cellphone records - and the coke dealers whose numbers appear on them - are true, then this tends to confirm what we always suspected: that the crores that were illegally collected by the Safdarjung Road gang went into drinks, drugs and wild partying.

What are the five thumb rules for a layman to take care of his heart?
Dr Devi Shetty:
1. Diet - Less of carbohydrate, more of protein, less oil
2. Exercise - Half an hour's walk, at least five days a week; avoid lifts and avoid sitting for a longtime
3. Quit smoking
4. Control weight
5. Control blood pressure and sugar
-------
Is eating non-veg food (fish) good for the heart?
Dr Devi Shetty: No
--------
It's still a grave shock to hear that some apparently healthy person gets a cardiac arrest. How do we understand it in perspective?
Dr Devi Shetty: This is called silent attack; that is why we recommend everyone past the age of 30 to undergo routine health checkups.
--------
Are heart diseases hereditary?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes
---------
What are the ways in which the heart is stressed? What practices do you suggest to de-stress?
Dr Devi Shetty: Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection in everything in life.
-------
Is walking better than jogging or is more intensive exercise required to keep a healthy heart?
Dr Devi Shetty: Walking is better than jogging since jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints
---------
You have done so much for the poor and needy. What has inspired you to do so?
Dr Devi Shetty: Mother Theresa, who was my patient.
--------
Can people with low blood pressure suffer heart diseases?
Dr Devi Shetty: Extremely rare
--------
Does cholesterol accumulates right from an early age (I'm currently only 22) or do you have to worry about it only after you are above 30 years of age?
Dr Devi Shetty: Cholesterol accumulates from childhood.
---------
How do irregular eating habits affect the heart?
Dr Devi Shetty: You tend to eat junk food when the habits are irregular  and your body's enzyme release for digestion gets confused.
---------
How can I control cholesterol content without using medicines?
Dr Devi Shetty: Control diet, walk and eat walnut.
---------
Can yoga prevent heart ailments?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yoga helps.
----------
Which is the best and worst food for the heart?
Dr Devi Shetty: Best food is fruits worst are oil.
---------
Which oil is better - gingili, groundnut, sunflower, saffola, olive?
Dr Devi Shetty: All oils are bad; the so-called best oil company has the largest marketing budget.
--------
What is the routine checkup one should go through? Is there any specific test?
Dr Devi Shetty: Routine blood test to ensure sugar, cholesterol is ok. Check BP, Treadmill test after an echo.
--------
How different was it in treating Noor Fatima, the little kid from Pakistan?
Dr Devi Shetty: It was extremely difficult, Because of the media attention. As far as the medical treatment is concerned, she is like any other child
with a complex heart problem.
--------
What are the first aid steps to be taken on a heart attack?
Dr Devi Shetty: Help the person into a sleeping position, put an  aspirin tablet under the tongue with a sorbitrate tablet if available, and rush him
to a coronary care unit since the maximum casualty takes place within the first hour.
-------
How do you differentiate between pain caused by a heart attack and that caused due to gastric trouble?
Dr Devi Shetty: Extremely difficult without ECG.
---------
What is the main cause of a steep increase in heart problems amongst youngsters? I see people of about 30-40 yrs of age having heart attacks and serious
heart problems.
Dr Devi Shetty: Increased awareness has increased incidents. Also, edentary lifestyles, smoking, junk food, lack of exercise in a country where people are genetically three times more vulnerable for heart attacks than Europeans and Americans.
-------
Is it possible for a person to have BP outside the normal range  of 120/80 and yet be perfectly healthy?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes.
------
Marriages within close relatives can lead to heart problems for the child. Is it true?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes, co-sanguinity leads to congenital abnormalities and you may not have a software engineer as a child
--------
Many of us have an irregular daily routine and many a times we have to stay late nights in office. Does this affect our heart? What precautions would you recommend?
Dr Devi Shetty: When you are young, nature protects you against all these irregularities. However, as you grow older, respect the biological clock.
--------
Will taking anti-hypertensive drugs cause some other complications (short / long term)?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes, most drugs have some side effects. However, modern anti-hypertensive drugs are extremely safe.
--------
Will consuming more coffee/tea lead to heart attacks?
Dr Devi Shetty: No.
-------
Are asthma patients more prone to heart disease?
Dr Devi Shetty: No.
------------
How would you define junk food?
Dr Devi Shetty:
Fried food like Kentucky, McDonalds, samosas, and even masala dosas.
----------
You mentioned that Indians are three times more vulnerable. What is the reason for this, as Europeans and Americans also eat a lot of junk food?
Dr Devi Shetty: Every race is vulnerable to some disease and unfortunately, Indians are vulnerable for the most expensive disease.
----------
Does consuming bananas help reduce hypertension?
Dr Devi Shetty: No.
----------
Can a person help himself during a heart attack (Because we see a lot of forwarded emails on this)?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes. Lie down comfortably and put an aspirin tablet of any  description under the tongue and ask someone to take you to the nearest coronary
care unit without any delay and do not wait for the ambulance since most of the time, the ambulance does not turn up.
----------
Do, in any way, low white blood cells and low hemoglobin count lead to heart problems?
Dr Devi Shetty: No. But it is ideal to have normal hemoglobin level to increase your exercise capacity.
-----------
Sometimes, due to the hectic schedule we are not able to exercise. So, does walking while doing daily chores at home or climbing the stairs in the house, work as a substitute for exercise?
Dr Devi Shetty: Certainly. Avoid sitting continuously for more than half an hour and even the act of getting out of the chair and going to another chair and sitting helps a lot.
------------
Is there a relation between heart problems and blood sugar?
Dr Devi Shetty: Yes. A strong relationship since diabetics are more vulnerable to heart attacks than non-diabetics.
----------

---------------
Are people working on night shifts more vulnerable to heart disease when compared to day shift workers?
Dr Devi Shetty: No.
-------------
What are the modern anti-hypertensive drugs?
Dr Devi Shetty: There are hundreds of drugs and your doctor will chose the right combination for your problem, but my suggestion is to avoid the drugs and
go for natural ways of controlling blood pressure by walk, diet to reduce weight and changing attitudes towards lifestyles.
------------
Does dispirin or similar headache pills increase the risk of heart attacks?
Dr Devi Shetty: No.
----------
Why is the rate of heart attacks more in men than in women?
Dr Devi Shetty: Nature protects women till the age of 45.
---------
How can one keep the heart in a good condition?
Dr Devi Shetty: Eat a healthy diet, avoid junk food, exercise everyday, do not smoke and, go for a health checkup if you are past the age of 30 for at least once in two yrs. And work very hard...

Enjoy.....Life..........

Organic farming is the only way for the apple farmers of Himachal Pradesh to make an impact in the global market as their output has been dropping due to the use of chemical fertiliser.

So says a team of Swiss and Indian experts who have just ended their field trip to the hill state to raise awareness about the need for adopting organic farming.

Apple is the main cash crop of Himachal Pradesh and, along with neighbouring Jammu and Kashmir and Uttaranchal, the state accounts for almost the entire apple production of the country.

But the Indian apple is not able to compete with the best in the international market as its quality is far behind the fruit grown by organic methods particularly in countries like Switzerland.

"The heavy use of chemical fertiliser and pesticide by Himachal apple farmers has degraded the soil of the orchards and damaged the ecosystem. Because of that the inputs have been going up, but the output has been dropping steadily for farmers," said Samuel B. Moser, a Swiss expert.

"The pattern is the same in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttaranchal as well," Moser added.

"During our weeklong awareness campaign we surprisingly found 80 farmers already practising organic farming on the orchards with good results. But this is only a microscopic minority," said Tej Pratap Singh, executive director of the International Competency Centre for Organic Farming in Bangalore.

"Actually the advantage of adopting organic farming is twofold as it reduces cost and raises production," Singh said.

"Even though the state government has done little to promote and manufacture organic fertiliser, farmers can take the initiative and produce organic manure on their farms," said Singh.

The experts said the Indian apple must be produced organically instead of chemically on a large scale in order to compete in the international market.

This would not only fetch higher returns but help in greatly restoring the eco-system damaged due to the use of harmful chemical fertiliser and pesticide.

"China, the world's largest producer of apples, has already started producing the fruit with the help of organic farming in a big way as it is more in demand in the international market. So must India," said Singh.

OK! Bye then. Nice being with you. Take care, huh?”

“It was great talking to you and catching up. Now you’d better keep in touch. Bye sweetie, take care!”

“Dear Mom, this is just a short mail to tell you that I’m doing fine here. Couldn’t catch up with you earlier but I’ll be more in touch now. Bye. Love you. Take care!”

This “take care” business bamboozles me. Take care of what? Everyone is always advising everyone else to take care. So am I to take care to lock the gate after they have left? Or am I to take care to dust my shoes on the doormat before I enter my house? Or must I take care to modulate my voice to an acceptable level when I speak to the servant?
Perhaps it’s all about appearance! I should be taking care to wear clean and ironed clothes or should I take care to brush my teeth before I go to bed? Aha! Got it. I’ve got to take care to groom my pet dog. Or maybe, I should take care to cover the milk pateela.

I was finally a bit irritated with this phrase after I’d been asked 18 times that day to “take care, haan!”. I demanded of the last “take carers” just what it was that I was supposed to be taking care of?

“It’s just a phrase” they replied. “Why get so hassled about it? Just chill yaar!”

CHILL! That’s another one of those phrases! Chill what? Chill the milk? Chill the coke? Chill the water? Its funny how all these “phrases” just leave you dangling midair. What do they mean? Where do they come from? How come the world is using them with impunity with nobody challenging them?
I decided to enquire of one of my friend in the Department of English in Panjab University. Surely the academia was concerned about this insouciant use of phrases that left you floundering for meaning.
“Oh, yes. One has noticed the use of such new-age phrases among the metropolitan English speakers,” said she “But why let it disturb you? Let it go. Enjoy!”

Oh! Does it ever end? Enjoy? Enjoy what? Enjoy a movie? Enjoy a walk? Enjoy some golguppas at the chaatwalas? How could such unqualified “phrases” have acquired such significance in the Queen’s language?
I finally convinced myself that I shouldn’t react so strongly at what were after all only “signing off” phrases which started as being “different” for most users. Too bad they are getting so overused and as such, clichéd and dull, dull, dull.

Guess I’ve got to be happy with that. Ciao then. Be seeing you. Till then, chill, enjoy and do take care, haan?
