India tried it once about six months back but was forced to pull back due to strong protests. Now however, the country's Department of Telecom (DoT), the authority that controls telecommunications, is working on a smart way out of censoring the Internet without attracting a public outcry. And if the DoT can have its way, India may put a stop to Internet telephony services of Yahoo, MSN and Skype among a host of others that are mushrooming in the country.

I feel this is the old telephone companies fighting with the new IT companies. The internet is a serious threat to the telephone business. I'm afraid there is some way to go yet before Telecoms and the internet break out of the dark ages of government control.  Nobody, for instance, seems interested in moving "broadband" (fraudband, as many of us call it) forward to match the kind of speeds that many countries offer. Apparently, even our tiny neighbour Sri Lanka is way ahead of us on bandwidth/cost.

Dosen't the govt have anything better to do? how about building some good roads for instance.

hey,

Going away from MS is good thing. I am trying same. And i am looking to buy a new PC on LINUX. Currently I am using a PC provided by my father's office for his official use.
Cheapest desktop i am able to findout is from one company known as bigapple, it cost shade below 7K and it is good looking, but i am thinking if it is useful or not. They do not supply mouse and keyboard is also 'laptop like' means they are saving on providing a full feature keyboard.
This being group pretaning to Shimla so I will not write anything on that here, I am forwarding some mails regarding 'bigapple'. Sadly it is not available in Shimla, closest one for u will be at New Delhi.

Sea Monkey is netscape navigator in the new avtaar. Looks good to me but
firefox and opera are my fav. I am shunning all MS products now. Call it
the fatigue thing and there are some very interesting products available
once you get out from the MS mindset.

I found Open Office OK. Mind you as a free utility it's a lot better and
I think this product should be encouraged to be used in schools and

Thunderbird and now this Sea Monkey looks ok.

have a licensed version.
So search net and will find it, original MS version, just ripped off
enough so that u do not have to go thru the verification from Bill Gates.

And i found it ;)

Nitin,
I had to format my PC recently and was left withot MS office.
I downloaded Open Office; thank god i have a Broadband connection at
home, But i am still to use extensively, as i use MS at office and at
home it is only surfing (on FIREFOX)
I am not really impressed,at lease going by looks it is pale and
dirty, i got a pirated version of MS Office 2007, it is really cool,
however it is MS so i do not wish to use it.

Oh if u r worried about huge download, this months DIGIT magazine has
it.I m still not sure it is full version or just power point viewer,
and few other stuff added. You see my CD rom is broken and i can not
chk it. Hey i can use it and tell u though.

I also got this cool mail client from SeaMonkey and have configured my
AOL IMAP account to it. Thats why all of sudden my activity on this
group had increased, cool mail client, easy to configure; i tried
endlessly to configure PINE and MUTT, but to no use. But it took me
less than 5 mins to setup and go live with this mail client. Though
the fact that AOL has started giving 2GB IMAP configurable mail has
helped. I always wanted to use IMAP service but in the absence of any
full featured service i was not able to use it.

live free, live good,
Lav..

hi,

I recently came across a small piece of news which i wish to share with
you all.
This news came in a daily in Mumbai.
http://www.indiaprwire.com/businessnews/20070221/18238.htm

BSNL is planning to withdraw facility of telegram in almost all centers
across Himachal Pradesh, and the reason cited was that due to new
technologies like email and mobile phones; telegram is no longer needed.
I wonder have Himachal Pradesh such a high density of mobile users or
net users that it prompted BSNL to withdraw such a grass route service.
Frankly i personally have never used telegram facility, but has it
become so outdated of we have many internet connections.Fews days back
when shimla experienced Snowfall, i recived few pics from my friends
back in town, two of them usign broadband connections. However i still
think that net penentration is not as much and not to that level to
prompt such an act on the part of BSNL.

Feel free to comment, thats what this group is all about ;)

Has any of you written a letter to God ?

Stumbled upon a place in Uttranchal, India where people actually write letters to God.There are 1000 of letters and bells that goes with these letters. The language is English, Hindi, Pahari, German, French. The faith cuts among casts and countries. Haven't seen anything like this before.

Please have a look of it here

This temple is near Almora. Hope God read them all.

Does anyone know a similar place in India or abroad ?

doPDF is a free PDF converter software from NovaPDF developers. Like Adobe Acrobat, doPDF can print PDF files from virtually any document including Microsoft Office Documents, AutoCAD, Outlook emails and web pages.

The doPDF software is free for both personal and commercial use. No watermarks or other annoying limitations. This PDF writer even works on Windows Vista.

doPDF will install itself as a virtual printer driver and can be accessed from any application that supports printing. Simply select the doPDF printer instead of your regular printer and the file will be converted and saved as PDF document.

The whole PDF converter installer is just 2.5 MB. That makes the deal all the more exciting.

There's a Flickr.com group started by Rita Banerji aimed at raising awareness of female infanticide in India. She invites everyone to upload photos of Indian women and girls to represent the missing people. Here is her statement (below). At this point there are only 365 photos. Some beautiful photos, and a great place to share yours with other concerned people.

http://flickr.com/groups/50_million_missing/

About 50 million women are currently missing from India's population. Through rampant feticide, infanticide, and the murder of young women by their husbands and inlaws for dowry, India has managed to invert its population ratio from 10:9, women to men, as is normal for any population, to 9:10. Further more India has even warped the gender ratio for 1/5 of the entire human population.

It is the intention of this website to have every one of the 50 million missing represented by a photograph. These can be of Indian women or girls, of any age, and community represented as portraits or shown as engaged in various activities -- which is life. It would help very much if their is a small personal commentary with the photo about the girl or woman so we can invert the process of dehumanizing Indian women. This is India's silent genocide -- and it is time for it to stop.

CNN-IBN ran this investigative report on TV on Feb 16, on the illegal charas trade in Himachal Pradesh.

"A confidential police report obtained by this Special Investigation Team reveals that 90 percent of the Rs 900 crore illegal charas trade in Himachal is controlled by foreign mafias"

http://www.ibnlive.com/news/drug-lor...33749-3-0.html

Israeli and Italian mafia are being blamed.

That has become a huge problem in Himachal Pradesh. The enforcement of laws are, at best, erratic. In this case, as long as the mafia is paying off the appropriate govt officials, there will only be lackadaisical attempts by the authorities to enforce the law. Half the police force are probably stoners too, which doesn't help the enforcement. The same drug lords and their men have made beautiful Parvati valley not so inviting anymore.

The disturbing scenario is that neither the Govt nor the opposition parties in Himachal has said a word about the issue and anyone can make their own guesses. Not a word has been said on this issue in the ongoing Vidhan Sabha session!

Strangely, this post was also censored on VOH, Himvani.

I request Hangouters to write to the govt at cm-hp@... on this serious issue of Himachal becoming a drug base.

Greetings,

A citizen journalism effort in Himachal completes one-year
By: Vividhaditya

It’s been an eventful year for HimVani as it celebrates its first
anniversary. It was on February 14th 2006, HimVani started as a blog on
Blogspot. So before I go into flashback, I’d like to thank all the
citizens of Himachal Pradesh for making HimVani a great success. It
initially started as my personal ramblings on Himachal Pradesh – as a
blog. And then Varun, Sanjay, Nityin, Surekha, Neha, Hema, Vikas,
Swadesh, Shekhar and Ms Saroj Thakur came on board. However, I’m happy
to say that today it isn’t any more just our website. It’s the citizens’
property today, who’ve made grassroots journalism a great success. Why
we call it grassroots journalism and why not citizens’ journalism, I’ll
delve into later.

HimVani spells out its vision for Himachal
By: Varun Rattan Singh

Working on a new initiative is like raising one’s children. It brings
its own anxieties, worries and happiness. Today our small baby -
HimVani.com completes one year. What started as a small community for
Himachali's in 2001 has taken shape of an information resource for the
people and by the people of Himachal Pradesh. The story of how we
reached here is long and probably I will talk about it some other time.
For the time being we have one year experience of running an initiative
behind us. So is it time to sit back and celebrate or do we plan ahead
and set some more targets for us in the coming year? I have been
deliberating on these issues for a while. I think it is time to share
some thoughts and probably open the house for people to give us a feedback.

For a long time we have kept one word in our mind i.e. Catalyst.

A turn around the hill
Sanjay V

Trudging through mindspaces that unfurled on Himvani over the past one
year, I can only say the landscape ahead is no less enchanting. Much
having already been said by fellow travellers, I can only say it has
been a spiritual journey for me, a pilgrimage exploring the vast
possibilities and layers of meanings that can be attributed to living in
the mountains, especially Himachal. Himvani, in fact, is an expression
of this feeling for each one of us and that is why we have been
cohabiting here in virtual space as well. That Himvani is growing
exponentially is reason enough for us all to keep moving towards a new
horizon of hope and contented living.

HimVani can be a store house of everything pertaining to Himachal
By: Saroj Thakur

It was by chance and not design that I came to know about HimVani! Why
is it that we take for granted all those things that we get so easily?
Like the fresh air that we breathe, all those qualities that set us,
Himachali's, apart from others, were always taken for granted by me. It
was travelling out of state and interactions with many others that make
us see and appreciate values, attitudes and beliefs that make us different.

I came in contact with HimVani when I posted a write-up “What makes me
proud of being a Himachali” on my personal bog. And after that it is
history.

If you have Adobe Reader 7 or earlier make sure you turn off the option "Display PDF in browser". Follow these three simple steps to turn it off.

  1. Start Adobe Reader
  2. Go to Edit > Preferences  or press Ctrl + "K"
  3. Select Internet in Categories
  4. Make sure that the Display PDF in browser is unchecked.

Make sure you follow these steps as soon as possible or someone could be going through your personal information online. The flaws in Adobe Reader can get information by only visiting a webpage. It could be used to gain way too much private information from your browser. Make sure you turn it off before you end up loosing a lot of personal information.

Greetings,

HimVani.com is a Voice of Himachal (VOH) initiative - a sincere effort
to generate public awareness and responsiveness towards sustainable
living in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. The HimVani.com
website is an effort to present and debate the true state of things in
Himachal, and to act as a catalyst to trigger social consciousness.

We are looking for a web designer who is willing to 'PARTNER'
with us and be part of this upcoming social enterprise. The person
should have sound working knowledge of open source content management
systems such as WORDPRESS/DRUPAL/JOOMLA. If working with a start-up
inspires you and giving something back to the society is at the back of
your mind than feel free to drop in a line.

We are also on a constant lookout for WRITERS for whom writing is a
means of expressing emotions. At HimVani we just don't seek people who
can write about social problems but also suggest innovative solutions.
Being a voluntary initiative we don't pay in monetary terms but
definitely provide a platform to publish your stories with your byline

Hi all,
Well I am writing this mail after long gap, because
I was out of Bangalore for Quite some time.
First of all I would like to tell you that our "Bangalore Chapter" has
started as me and Krishan kumar visited Nimish's family at Cambridge road
in Banlaore on 14th jan,2007.
Although we were only 2 to visit Nimish's family but it was really a good
start where in we could interact with each other at first meeting. One of
the amazing thing I realized is that Nimish has very good interaction with
Himachal inspite of being born and brought up in Orissa.Bohra family is
very hospitable as Himachalis are known to be but they are free and open
minded to talk to.
I would write about Bohra family as:
Nimish's father is Ex-SAIL Chief Chemist staying with him in Bangalore. He
is very good fellow whom you can talk lot about Cricket and other issues
related to Himachal.Bohra family hail from Nalagarh in Himachal.Nimish's
mother is a house wife staying with him.
Nimish is presently working in Regalics as Marketing professional.Nimish
is a graduate from REC(NIT) Rourkela, orissa. After that he has done Master
in Design through CEED in Mumbai. One more interesting thing about this
fellow is that he has an Element of art in him.He has interest in
painiting and have painted some Beautiful Painitings which you can see on
the walls in his Home in Bangalore.
Nimish's wife Aabha is a Teacher in Engineering College in
Bangalore.Nimish has two Children studying in Bangalore.

Well I had invited other guys on the same day but they could not meet due
to some personal reasons.Anyways Nimish has asked us to plan again
sometime where in we can come together at his home so we can have lunch
together.
I leave this on other Team members who are interested in carrying Forward
this Bangalore Chapter and make it a success. Please bring more people in
contact and help them out here if in need. This is all I can say at this
moment.I assure to add 2-3 more interested members by the end of May,2007
in Bangalore Chapter.
I responded to Apna Himachal but so far I have not got any Feedback from
them as person concerned is in Delhi.Anyways I would like to express that
I am open to such issues and will try to make things possible.

Further to this I would like to inform all of you that I will be out of
India after 5th Feb,2007 till May 4th,2007.During this time, this will be
my contact email.More over I will try to move things in Norway as well if
possible from Himvani perspective.Do write me on this mail please.
Please feel free to get back to me for any mistake or correction, because I
believe there is a chance of improvement everytime.

Regards,

With Windows Vista coming out in two weeks, countless gullible fools will probably spend a fortune on major upgrades, or new computers, just to make Bill gates another $80 Billion. A full version of Vista (as opposed to an upgrade version) will probably cost Rs.18000 to buy. I'm willing to bet a full copy of Windows Vista Premium will cost more than a bottom of the line brand new computer. Don't believe me? Just wait and see.

There are at least four versions of Vista, and I'd suggest not buying any of them unless Microsoft has changed dramatically by reducing prices, offering free technical support, posting an email contact number for suggestions and complaints, done away with PRODUCT ACTIVATION (the worst idea ever), and releases a free service pack 3 for Windows XP that removes the PRODUCT ACTIVATION feature, includes all cumulative updates for Windows XP from the last service pack 2 release up to and including the present, and fixes the ridiculous limits on hard drive sizes that exist for no other reason than poor planning or an intentional oversight to make you buy the newest version of Windows!

It drives me absolutely crazy to know how many millions of people are going to go out and make Bill Gates even richer than he already is when they must know deep down that they're just going to get ripped off again by him. How can anyone support product Activation, no technical support, and no way to even send an email to the company when all they get for hundreds of dollars is poorly written, bug-riddled computer code?

A full copy of Windows XP costs between Rs. 6,500 and Rs. 7,500. A bottom of the line Celeron Processor that will run it with no problem can be bought for as low as Rs. 2000. In what world does it make sense for an operating system to cost as much as triple the cost of the CPU chip that runs it?

Don't buy Vista, and send Bill Gates a message that he can't keep using his monopoly to charge insane fees for an inferior and defective product, with a copy protection scheme thought up by a mental midget. No more Product Activation or unrealistic size limitations used as a poorly disguised marketing ploy to get you to buy the latest version of Windows just to get an operating system with new errors and new limitations that must be overcome.

The best copy protection scheme in existence is this: a reasonably priced product with free technical support and (yes, here it comes) an actual manual that explains the features. If a software company can produce a 3 GB video game, supply a manual, free technical support, email contact information, and then charge between Rs. 1300 and Rs. 2500 for their product, then why can't Microsoft? Is Microsoft just not very good? (like anyone needs an answer)

I think it's time IBM, Dell, Gateway, Compaq, and HP got together and produced a new operating system to give consumers a real choice. Don't kid yourselves, they have the resources to do it, they just need to know that there is a market.

Again, don't rush to buy Windows Vista.
