Honeymoon in Himachal snow turns fatal
2 Dec 2007, 1314 hrs IST,Jagdish Bhatt,TNN

SHIMLA: A couple on honeymoon is sure to soak in the proximity of a
snowy white mountaintop. So did Delhi residents Sanjeev Negi and his
wife Neetu, on their honeymoon to Manali in Himachal Pradesh.

But a heavy snowfall on Friday turned fatal for them when they were
returning to Manali from Rohtang Pass, which is at a height of 13,000
ft from sea level and 4 km from Manali. Due to snow on the road, their
cab skidded off into the valley killing them on the spot. However, the
driver escaped with minor injuries.

According to Kullu Police, the weather was clear till about 11 am and
that's why local cab drivers drove up the tourists to snow point at
Rohtang Pass. But, the weather, according to Kullu ADM Vijay Chandan,
deteriorated suddenly and it started snowing heavily by about 3 pm.

"In just about half-an-hour over six inches of snow piled up at the
Pass and on the road leading to it from both sides. Apparently the cab
in which the young couple was travelling got caught in the middle of
the snow and though the local taxi drivers are used to driving on the
meandering road, the vehicle skidded off the snow and went hurtling
down about half a km from Marhi on the Kullu side," he said.

He said that as soon as the news of almost 500 tourists, most of them
from North India, being stranded at the Rohtang Pass due to heavy
snowfall, reached the district headquarters, the police swing into
action.

"Though the Pass is only about 4 km from Manali, it is a stiff trek
and becomes difficult to reach during snowfall. So a team comprising
members of the 4th Everesters, instructors of the Institute of
Mountaineering and Allied Sports Manali and local police was hurriedly
put together at 6 pm and sent to the Pass to bring back the stranded
tourists," Chandan said.

The ADM said that the team could reach the top only by 7 pm.

"There was over one-and-a-half feet of snow but the men got to their
task and formed a chain helping the tourists to climb down to a point
where 20 Gypsies had been parked to transport them back to Manali.
Till late in the night they managed to get 200 tourists to Manali,
while the remaining 300 stayed overnight at Marhi and brought back to
Manali on Saturday afternoon," he said.

However, most of the vehicles were stranded at the top of the Rohtang
Pass and could now only be retrieved after the snow clears away.

Hi,

The following article was posted on our site and I think it is must read

The sky road through Himachal
By: Jyoti Kamal
A tribute to the frontier road builders of India

A road that puts the fear of the Lord in your hearts. Brings about mad
panic attacks when you don't know what you can possibly do to save
yourself from plunging several hundred feet off an edgeless road into
the abyss below. A road that makes you want to walk rather than sit
helplessly in a vehicle. A road in the northern Indian mountain state
of Himachal Pradesh that makes you think of disc brakes and studded
tyres. A road built by Jharkhand, an Indian state far removed and far
poorer.

Hi Hangouters

I am sorry for the delay in sending information about the meeting on
21st. Apolgies and here is the story.

Since this was first meeting of HimVani, it started with a round of
introductions. The participants present were.

1. Mr. D. D. Sharma (Currently working with Tourism department and
also a documentary film maker. He is a writer and has been associated
with HimVani.com for few months now)
2. Mr. Inderjeet Duggal (Currently working with AIR Shimla. Mr Duggal
is a senior and well respected individual in the media fraternity of
Shimla)
3. Ms Praveena Katoch (Journalism students)
4. Ms. Muskan Singh (Journalism students)
5. Ms Hemlata Dogra (Journalist with Indian Express)
6. Mr Akhil Puri (volunteer at heart, Akhil is travel enthusiast and
part of team which organises international Mountain Terrain Biking
competition in Himachal)
7. Ms Priyanka Jain (Currently working as faculty with ICFAI Shimla.
She teaches management students as well works as a volunteer with
ROTRACT Shimla)
8. Mr Subhash Mendhapurkar (He has been residing in Himachal for 30
years, a state which adopted by choice. He is instrumental in running
an NGO called SUTRA which has been working on tacking developmental
issues in Himachal. )
9. Mr. Ajai Srivastava (Currently working as Chief Editor of JANPAKSH
a weekly Hindi magazine focussing on Himachal. He is also involved in
raising issues related to disability)
10. Mr Rajender Rana (Currently working as web designer with a firm
in Delhi. He is also does lot of freelance work. For NGO's Rajender
is willing to offer his services at a subsidised rates)
11. Mr Varun Singh (Currently working as a consultant with Department
of IT on Rural IT project.)

I must mention here that Rajender had come all the way from Delhi to
attend the meeting.

Broadly the discussion focused on how to make HimVani, truly the
Voice of Himachal.

1. It was felt that in Himachal there is lack of debates and HimVani
can be a medium which can bring social issues to limelight by
generating debate in the state. This could be done in partnership
with various NGOs which recently got associated with HimVani.

2. The medium chosen for this was by organising Jan Sunwai or Public
meetings. The ground work for this will be done this year so that by
next year HimVani will be able to do such meeting in Shimla. The
issues related to common man will be raised such as education,
health, governance etc.

3. It was felt that HimVani should help reach out to student
community and seek their partnership to support in volunteer activity
of various NGO's based on their interest.

4. The participants were also informed about the activities of
HimVani.com core team and the kind of organisation and social
business model which we have arrived at.

with warm regards

Friends & Believers,

I hope you are all preparing for the festival of lights. I sure am looking forward to Diwali with my family after a long time.  Its been a while since we communicated to I thought of updating you about our activities in last few months. Broadly we have been:

1. Establishing relationships with NGOs in the state.
2. Doing ground work on setting a Rural tourism business
3. Exploring an idea on setting up a marketing channel for Natural products from Himachal.
4. First face to face interaction of VOH members in Shimla.
5. Guest lectures with Students in HP University and NIT Hamirpur
6. Registering Voice of Himachal as a Non Profit Entity.

I am sure with your goodwill and support we will continue to work on our chosen path to contribute positively in the social and economic development of Himachal.

HimVani.com continues to provide day to day information about Himachal, however we are not happy with the content which we are generating. I request you to kindly send us suggestions on improving the quality of content. Adding to it we need more brains and hands who can write about Himachal. If you know someone who can write well and would be interested in being part of Citizen Journalism movement like VOH than kindly recommend HimVani to them. Ideally we should have atleast one writer from each Tehsil.

A sincere request to many members who have been quite active in the past but have recently been quite or taken a back seat. We do understand that once in a while rough patches hit us all. With increasing work pressure of professional and family life, time does become a constraint. However it is important that we continue to do what we believe in . HimVani is not an individual effort but an effort by a group of believers and your support makes the core team of volunteers put extra efforts.

I wish you and your family a very pleasant, fun filled and safe Diwali on behalf of HimVani team.

Carpe diem !

Dear all,

I hope you all are doing well. Though Shimla and most of Himachal
remains bright in the day but morning and evenings are getting real
chilly.

Today me and Hema went to see Press Club as a venue for the 21st
October meeting. It is situated right at the ridge, next to statue of
Smt.Indira Gandhi. The place seems ok and it is cheap to suit our
pockets.

We had few members requesting for a change in dates but it won't be
possible as many of us confirmed our presence on 21st itself. So we
not get to meet each other but celebrate Dussehra. By the way, if
there is a cricket match than press club also provides a colour TV.

So hope to some of the forum members face to face at Press Club in
Shimla, 12 Noon on 21st October. Do remember its a contributory lunch
please do not forget to bring your wallet.

Kindly confirm your presence by email to to me or an sms at 98160 76772

with warm regards

AN INDIAN entrepreneur has given a new twist to the concept of low-cost airlines. The passengers boarding his Airbus 300 in Delhi do not expect to go anywhere because it never takes off.
All they want is the chance to know what it is like to sit on a plane, listen to announcements and be waited on by stewardesses bustling up and down the aisle.
In a country where 99% of the population have never experienced air travel, the “virtual journeys” of Bahadur Chand Gupta, a retired Indian Airlines engineer, have proved a roaring success.
As on an ordinary aircraft, customers buckle themselves in and watch a safety demonstration. But when they look out of the windows, the landscape never changes. Even if “Captain” Gupta wanted to get off the ground, the plane would not go far: it only has one wing and a large part of the tail is missing.
Passengers are looked after by a crew of six, including Gupta’s wife, who goes up and down the aisle with her drinks trolley, serving meals in airline trays.

Dear All,

It is good to see the response received for our call for meeting in
Shimla. Based on the responses received, 21st October come out to be
the best possible time for the meeting. Since this is going to be a
contributory get-together I am trying to locate a place which is
reasonable enough to seat 10 - 15 people. If any of you have any
suggestions please let me know ?

I hope this gives us enough time to schedule our appointments in such
a way that most of us make it to the venue.

Broadly the idea is to have a Get - to - Know kind of event where
members of the group probably will meet each other face to face for
the first time. The agenda of the meeting is not set, so pour in your
ideas. The only thing which is final is that we will have contributory
lunch together :)

If you have not yet confirmed your participation, kindly do so by
sending a mail to me with your mobile number.

I believe this is the first English novel written by and about Afghans and Afghanistan. For the first novel this is a pretty well written story. And besides the story it gives a good peep into the Afghanistan as it was and how it is today. It tells you about the psychology of Afghans, their small rituals, their values and the games they play. It is also a very sad story; you may not feel very happy at the end of the book.

There are primarily three layers in the story. First layer deals with the socio-political scenario in Afghan and the journey of a typical Afghani from 1960s to next century, and how their world has changed after the Russian invasion and the wars. How the most affluent people turned refugees and had to compromise their honor which is something that an Afghan cares for more than his own life.

The Second layer is the story of a Afghani, who was born in the times of monarchy in Kabul, lives his childhood there and then during Russian invasions has to run with his father to Pakistan and then eventually to America. He comes back to Afghanistan after 20 years to take care of his guilt and a part of family that he never knew about, and encounters a different place, same people but a different life or rather no life. This is a story with all the twists and turns with some expected and some unexpected.

The third layer of story deals with human psychology, the truths that one has to face and live with, the layers that you keep discovering on the people you think you know, the guilt of carrying a secret that you have never told anyone, the sudden explanation of unexplained behaviors when certain secrets are unveiled. It also talks about the class divides that exist in Afghan society as well, though I am not sure if I can call that a layer, although the main story revolves around that divide.

Khaled is a good story teller as he starts the story in the middle and then takes you through the past and then to the time ahead of middle point, almost like a figure of eight. Even the expected turns, he keeps you guessing. The writing style can be little tighter, at places he tends to drag it a bit. Can be a good weekend read…

Hi,

Mountain Biking 2007 is starting from October 5th in Shimla. This
event has become a annual phenomenon and it continues to grow. This
year the cycle riders will have to go through tough mountain
conditions for 9 days covering more than 700 KMs. The race ends on
13th October at Manali. Prize distribution is to be held on 14th
October after giving a days breather to the participants who manage to
complete the race.

The event was started by a group of enthusiasts from Association for
Himalayan Tourism Adventure (AHAT). The first race was held in 2005.
Last year 58 riders from all across the world participated in the
event. Only 33 were able to finish the race.

The event at this stage and magnitude cannot be managed without
support of volunteers. Volunteers help in keeping the costs low,
specially when the resources are limited. This year AHAT has come up
with a volunteer programme so as to choose the right candidates
amongst the many who apply.

Selected volunteers will be provided with

• Accommodation
• Breakfast and dinner
• Race Finisher's Dinner
• Crew T-shirt
• Crew Cap
• Transport between stages
• Reserved start place for following year's race

If this is not enough than you also get to see beautiful Himachal ,
starting from Shimla and ending at Manali. The route will take you
through interiors of the picturesque state.

There are limited number of volunteer places available so those of you
who are interested in volunteering for the race please send a mail to
mbhimachal@... or log onto
http://www.mtbhimachal.com/volunteer_programme.htm . On selection you
will be intimated by AHAT team.

with warm regards

Hi,

Those amongst you, who have been members for more than 4 years will
know that we had planned to reach out to college and University
students in Himachal. The idea was to tell them about new career
opportunities which exist in the market. This was planned more than 3
years back when some of us met in Delhi. However the plan could not
fructify and it died its own death.

Last month, Surender and me revived the plan and we went to the
University to meet some students. Thanks to Prof Vikas Dogra we have
been able to interact with more than 25 students so far in 3 different
sessions. Surender has been talking to them about New Media and I took
New Economy as topic of discussion and career growth.

If any of you would like to interact with the students and if you feel
you can devote time to mentor some of them, please let me know.
Students here certainly need experienced hands to guide them as the
exposure is not very good.

with warm regards

Dear All,

Its been a long time since. we got together. I am proposing a meetup
sometime in September end or October in Shimla. There are many members
from in and around Shimla and we can gettogether somewhere on the Mall
road. I am sure, meeting face to face will only improve our
relationship and the belief in what we are trying to do.

with warm regards

Often we hear people saying in Himachal: "Nothing can be done here".
These words have been abused to an extent that the very idea has
become firmly engraved in minds of young people in Himachal. The basic
idea of Young Guns column at HimVani, here is to break this thought
process. So far, the kind of youngsters the column has covered, come
from a city background with families to support them. The story, which
follows is, of a novel and noble idea pursued from fancy to reality by
two brothers belonging to a remote village in Himachal Pradesh.
