A study carried out by Kalpavriksh Environmental Action Group, New
Delhi, and Lok Vigyan Kendra/ Navrachna, Himachal Pradesh, along with
information sought under the Right to Information Act have revealed
gross irregularities in the execution of 800 MW Parbati II hydel
project being executed by the National Hydro Power Corporation. Not
just this, even the agencies responsible for monitoring violations of
set guidelines have been found napping, thus giving NHPC a free hand
in taking liberties in following set norms.

Subject: Shimla - Newsletter Support 5000 women fighting for rights of single women in Himachal

Hi,

Under the aegis of Ekal nari Shakti Sangathan, about 5000 women will
walk from Arki to Shimla for 3 days demanding rights of single women.
The march starts on April 1, 2008 and ending in Shimla on 3rd April.

The key demands

• For the older single women, pension policy should be framed on the
model of the existing policy in the neighbouring state of Haryana.
Pensions should be paid every month without fail.
• Those single women who are fighting to secure their rights vis-à-vis
their in-laws' family, their cases must be referred to fast track
courts. Also, the spouses of all the single women who are not paying
the maintenance amount, as decreed by either the gram Panchayats or
the civil courts, should be legally challenged through fast track
courts.
• The State should ensure that two acres of land is granted on a
long-term lease (from government's surplus land pool) to all the
economically weak single women who are capable and eager to work as
self-employed farmers.
• Every single woman should be provided with health care facilities
from the primary to the tertiary level, free of cost.

Citizen journalism initiative in Himachal completes two years

`We', the people give ourselves HimVani

The severe winter in Himachal seems to be thawing and the days are
getting warm and sunny. It seems the weather gods have relented to
allow celebrations on February 14th. Well, today happens to be the
second anniversary of HimVani.com. So here we are at the end of
another milestone in our journey, which seems to have just begun. Ever
since this initiative was launched, we have seen many ups and downs
and the previous year was no different. But the important thing is -
we still believe in ourselves, our belief that we can make a
difference, and also the power of the masses.

Dear friends,

Seven people including Inderjeet Duggal, Ajai Srivastava, Varun, Rohit
(IT professional currently pursuing a project with the Himachal State
Electricity Board ), Lokesh an employee with the HPSEB, Parul Sood and
me (Hema Dogra ) had met on Jaunary 20 in Shimla. After discussions
the main issue that seemed to be bothering everyone was to maintain
regularity of the website himvani.com so that it remains visible.

For that Ajai Srivsastava suggested to generate content for a weekly
column that would be hard hitting (may be satirical and without naming
the person them to be safe) on bureaucrats, politicians or people who
matter as policy makers. The idea is to generate some interesting
content apart from news and which would include such facts which might
not qualify to be a full fledged news article but as interesting
behind the scenes incident. We wish to make it a weekly feature from
first week of February. Suggestions and comments are invited for this.

Suggestion for holding some debates and events were also floated where
all agreed to hold a debate on some burning issue about Himachal, by
mid-February.

To execute this, a team has been formed, called the Shimla Chapter,
where, Hema, Ajai Srivastava and Parul have volunteered to hold the
first Himvani debate and the rest would contribute in their own way.
Hema was nominated as a the first co-ordinator of Shimla chapter.
After the first event the Shimla Chapter can be reshuffled as per the
suggestion of the members of Himvani. We would like to have
suggestions on the topic for debate by January 30, so that other
formalities like inviting the panelists from the field and other
related things can be worked out in time.

Meanwhile we have also retained Sanjay Kanwar full time to perform
various secretarial and administrative tasks of VOH.

Lokesh had floated an idea to hold writers meet in Shimla, which would
also be worked out after the debate. Adding to it Varun said that he
is already working on the idea of holding a Barcamp (initially of
bloggers) in Shimla in association with the Instablogs.

The meeting ended with hot Pranthas, butter and tea at the Press Club.

Cheers

Hema Dogra.

PS: We will be uploading the photographs of the meeting separately.
