Relative Grading

Dear friends

I am a professor in one of the premier engg. institutions in India.

I would like to learn everything about "relative grading" of test
scores. I need information on weighing different components of a test.
Anyone can spare some time to explain the funda? I would prefer to
exchange a few mails back and forth. Standard, unambigous webpages
are also okay with me. Secondly, are there standard packages available?

I compute the mean and standard deviation, and use these metrics for
my grades; a few of my colleagues do it rather vaguely by looking at
gaps between marks. Interestingly enough, as our classrooms are
expanding, for numbers exceeding 70 or so, their method appears to
converge to my method; this I have observed over the past 7 years or
so! Is there any proof of such convergence?

Thanks for your time and patience.
