I have folowing figures for last 8 weeks like -

Cost Earning Profit
1.00 3.08 2.08
1.21 3.00 1.79
1.07 3.69 2.62
0.92 3.70 2.78
1.04 3.07 2.04
1.05 2.94 1.89
1.13 3.76 2.63
1.14 5.00 3.86

I would like to determine the optimal level of cost equalising earning
in order to avoid any loss , i.e.profit is 0 or > 0 .

Please help me.I wanted to calculate MEDIAN for earning. But Median is
used when there is large difference between Extreme Values. So I have
not foloowed that.
Advise me if some other statistical process could help me out.

Dear All,

If your basic data is in a separate database and even have   million or more records still summarize all records with olap cube, pivot tables in MS Excel and can view 63000 recors with filters applied trhrough "Import Extrenal Data" in the "Data" tab of Excel.

You may need to use data from a dbase file that has more that 65536
records, but if the records that you really need to use are less than
65536 records, an alternative would be to import the data into Excel
through ODBC. You can do this using the Microsoft dBase ODBC driver,
where you can create a filter and just import into Excel the rows that
you need.

However, as it has been said in this thread, even though you can do
this, Excel is very slow at processing that many rows and is not a
nice alternative for statistics. Since you're a statician, look into
other alternatives. If you have a budget limitation, take a look at R.

Dear Kamalakar Jadhav

Your query is not clear at all. Please clarify to us about your
query. Particularly,
1. what kind of 'handle' you want to do with your excel file?
2. Why do you want to 'handle' this?
3. currently what kind of problem you are facing during 'handle'-ing
of this file.

Please clarify.

Thanks & Regards
MADAN

It is great to hear from you. Having finished your MSc Statistics, you should be having a good theoretical knowledge in the discipline of statistics and it is imperative. As far as i'm concerned, working on two areas, both teaching and working with medical proffessionals, it takes a great deal of practical statistics and how you generate the output that they need using statistical softwares.

SPSS is a very good software to start with and it covers almost all topics at basic and a large portion of advanced levels and hence can answer a wide variety of research questions. Besides this, before moving into biostatistics, i strongly recommend you to read basic books on biostatistics which cover both statistics at an applied level and epidemiology, research methods and Clinical trials. Being a biostatistician, you need to know about the study designs, various standard research problems and so on. Knowledge on regression methods would be helpful at an advanced stage. With that I would like to leave it to you to hit hard on this really interesting discipline. Do ask if you should have any clarifications.

Dear M I Shamsi and all others,

Your question is indeed interesting. I would like to attempt to answer this question in the light of comments provided by Gabriela Carbo.

In order to answer the question, i make a few assumptions, which if changed would alter the answer that i give, and altering each of the assumption would be a seperate statistical problem which of great interest.

Assumptions:
1. The chance of choosing each of the four options is equal

2. Each question is independent in the sense that knowing the correct answer for a question will have no bearing on answering any other question

3. The two persons agree on the answers by chance alone.

Stating these assumptions, which is rather maximum simplification of the answer, we see that

The choice of anser for each of the question is 1/4 and hence for both to agree on the same answer is (1/4)^2 = 1/16.  (By assumption 1 and 3)

The chance of such an agreement to occur on all 50 questions is (1 / 16) ^ 50. (by assumption 2)

This is probably the most simplified answer and suggestions are welcome to improve on this by modifying each of the assumption.

Solomon Christopher.
