I'm a suffering new doctoral student with a research class that is using STATA
and am desperately trying to get up to speed quickly. Is there an
easy-to-understand list of stata commands out there somewhere that I can access?

It's difficult to use searches to find terms when I'm not familiar with what
stata can actually do. I've tried using the findit command in stata but again,
if I don't know what I'm trying to find in stata terms, it's not very effective.

So a list of commands would be very helpful.

Also, if possible, and on a slightly different note, an idea as to when to use
different types of charts (which ones are most effective in which situations)
would be great. Histograms, dotplots, etc all seem so alien to me. I'm a verbal
girl so quantitative approaches are all new to me.

Thanks for any suggestions or guidance,

Jeanette

No peace without justice

Peace is more than the absence of tension, it is the presence of justice

The 2nd is a quote from MLK and the top is a slogan that paraphrases it although
most people may not realize that.

Thanks Jay (et.al) for the information.
I did a Chi-Sq. test and then found a table of X^2 values in an old
text book. It showed that my data did not occur by chance and that
two variables were dependent (at p =0.05). (Did I say that
correctly?) And so "slips" is a significant type of accident in
mountaineering accidents, as expected. (there is an old joke about how
it isn't the slip or fall that kills you, it is the resulting impact
with the ground). One thing I wasn't clear on is if my sample size is
large enough. Do the Chi-Sq. test and X^2 tables take that into account?
BTW, I am aware that an accident could fall into two categories. For
example I had a category called "Exhaustion" and if an exhausted
climber could easily "slip" and it would be difficult to say the
accident didn't fall into two categories. However, in the field of
safety I worked in, because we had a specific goal in mind, we almost
always chose to make a forced choice and put each accident into one
category or another. Right or wrong, the goal was to identify where to
spend time and money on safety by demonstrating that there were
significant issues to work on.

This is just my inability to commit to anything. Actually the number
is a rational number, and is exactly 0.142857142857143. Now that is
precise! :) JIM

Sounds like you could do a Chi-Square test of count frequencies. You
would compare the actual observed frequencies in the 7 categories
against the expected (hypothesized) of "about 14.27%." I have an
Excel spread sheet that will do this nicely, that I can send you off-
line if you like.

BTW, what's this "about" stuff, when you report 14.27%? :) Should
not it be 'About 14%'? 14.27% sounds rathe precise to me. :)

Thanks in advance.
