Hello Everybody,

My name is TIK and I'm looking for some helps. I just read about factors
that affect the sizes of correlation coefficients for example unreliability of
measures , sample size, nonlinear relationships,
transformations data, grouping data, combining groups ... but I can't find
factors that affect the  power of prediction ( ex. r-square in regression)

What are the factors that affect the power of prediction???

Can you help me or just recommend some books or others source that I
can read?

I had SPSS 16 for 2 weeks and it was the worst 2 weeks of my
professional life - well, excluding when the biotech market bottomed
out, but that's another story.

The output files are *not* backwards compatible. If you need to read
an old output file, it's not going to happen if you upgrade.

If you try to read an SPSS 15.0 data file with 16, there's a good
chance (about 100% chance in my experience) that you will corrupt or
delete your data file. Every file I opened with 16.0 ended up
corrupted or deleted and had to be restored. I eneded calling IT
every day for the first week of my having 16.0 until I caught on that
it was the program itself that was doing it.

The other thing that happened with the changeover from 15 to 16 was
that 16.0 was incredibly slow and would 'freeze up' for long periods
of time.

There are a series of patches for 16.0's crummy bugginess, and 17.0
is supposed to be released really soon, which I have heard really
should be 16.1 but SPSS wants to charge you another $500 to get
an "upgrade" to the non buggy, finally functioning version. My
theory is they are doing that so that they are only supporting 16.0
and 17.0 which are basically the same thing, rather than supporting
15.0 and 16.0 which are very different beasts.

Anyhow, that is my two cents.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder in which the upper
airway repetitively collapses throughout the night. The average
number of these events per hour is defined as the apnea-hypopnea
index (AHI). While AHI has been shown to correlate with body mass
index (BMI), it appears that the distribution of fat is a better
predictor. For example, neck circumference (NC) and in some studies,
waist circumference (WC), have been found to be better predictors of
AHI than BMI.

In a study I ran a while back, I looked at some correlations between
several variables. I first performed a univariate analysis, with AHI
as the dependent variable and BMI, WC, hip circumference (HC) and
waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) as independent variables. None of these
factors correlated with AHI with all r2 values being<0.1. This is
perhaps due to a relatively small sample size (n=15). NOTE: This
study wasn't specifically run to look at these correlations. However,
since I had taken these measurements, I decided to have a look at
some relationships.

Nevertheless, I moved on and ran a multiple regression models with
AHI again as the dependent variable, with several variables
(including BMI, WC, HC and WHR) as independent variables. I first ran
a stepwise regression model and nothing came out. I moved on to a
backwards regression model and WC, HC and WHR came out as independent
predictors of AHI. This model explained ~77% of the variance in AHI.
I just need a little help in understanding how this model can explain
that much when none of them individually explain AHI?

There is also some debate being generated in our lab about which
variables should be included into multiple regression models. We have
been informed by some statisticians that if an independent variable
shows no significant correlation to a dependent variable in a
univariate analysis, it shouldn't be included in subsequent multiple
regression analysis. Other statisticians has said otherwise. Help
with this question would be very much appreciated.
