Dear Hartley

Thanks for the reply. The study was a type of opinion survey trying to identify the causes of why health care professionals do not want stay in rural areas, why they want to migrate to cities, or to the developed countries. To collect the data a questionnaire was used where the questions contained economic, political, social, and professional aspects.

A convenient type of sampling procedure was used to collect date, of course which was neither random nor representative.

The researcher used percentage (based on how many respondents answered a question "yes" among the total 300 respondents) to show the importance of different contributing factors.

Finally, based on the percentage the researcher drew some conclusions and put some suggestions to stop above mentioned migrations.

My question is about the strength of the findings (even if it were a random sample) which are purely based on percentage. To what extent we can be confident about the conclusion of identifying the factors contributing to/responsible for something which is a psychological or sociological phenomenon. It might be that other more important factors are there which are not included in the questionnaire or considered by the researcher.

In a behavioral research what is the scope of using percetage to come to a conclusion.

Sorry, it has become a long mail. However, the answer will help me to clear up my confusion. Also, a reference article/book (available in the internet) will be helpful.

Regards

Akib

Akib,
I have difficulty approaching your question without more information. "Percentage" can mean many different things; are you speaking of "percentile? " Can you please explain more about what you want to do? What are you studying? What scientific conclusions do you want to draw? Are you looking at economic, biological, clinical, educational data or what? Are you trying to infer something about the location of a population? How certain do you need to be about that location? Why can't you take a purposive sample?

Hi,
I am not VERY sure, but my first thought is
Fix k first . Now given  kth node is the bad note , you can always calclate the prob that the distance between
the specified node that that  bad note is less than the threshold distance say d. Integrate  fk (r)= (2(λπr2)k/rΓ(k)). e-λπr from zero to d
This is a function of k (and other parameters) as this is the conditional probability that the threshold distance is less than d given the kth node is the bad one.To get the unconditinal prob you have to multiply this with the prob that kth node is the bad one (you have to assume some prob function for it... that depends on you to decide based on your subject expertise/ lit survey...whatever it is) and sum over for all posible values of 'k'.
Dont expect a neat functional form.... you might have to do some simulation excerise.
Hope this helps.

Hello

The network contains number of nodes, and to any node, the near nodes are neighbors to it, the closest is the first neighbor, and so on,

The distance is random variable because:

Nodes in wireless networks may be randomly and independently spread over the entire service area, the resulting network topologies are diverse and, thus, the separation distance between any selected node pair can be regarded as a random variable.

The p.d.f of the distance between two pair nodes is function of the distribution of node (assume it’s given) and k, k=1, 2,… (Which mean first neighbor, second neighbor, etc).

fk (r)= (2(λπr2)k/rΓ(k)). e-λπr

r :network radius

λ: intensity of nodes

There is a bad state node in the network with probability 1 (100%) in the assumption.

We pick one node in the network and we want to compute the probability that the distance between it and the bad state node is less than threshold distance.

But the problem is that this bad state node is not specified whether if it’s 1st ,or 2nd, or kth neighbor (k is not specified).
So how can I formulate it, when I have only probability (good state) and (p.d.f), C.D.F. of the distance between node and its k th neighbor.

I hope it is explained now

So if you have any suggestion please tell me

Thanks

I can try. But pls explain
1. What is a neighbour?
2. Why the distance  between node and its k th neighbor is a random variable so that you have its pdf or cdf?
3. Pls make the following problem statement  more comprehensive and more elaborate:
Probability of the distance between this specific node (good state) and at least one node among all its neighbors less than threshold distance, conditioned this neighbor node has a bad state..

Please help me solve this problem

1. Let X1, · · · ,Xn and Y1, · · · , Yn be independent random samples from
N(μ1, sigma1^2) and N(μ2, sigma2^2), respectively.
(i) Assume sigma1 = sigma2 = 1. Find a uniformly most powerful test for testing
H0 : μ1 = μ2 against Ha : μ1 > μ2 with significance level  = 0.1;
(ii) Assume sigma1^2 = sigma2^2=sigma^2, but sigma is unknown. Find the
likelihood ratio test for testing H0 : μ1 = μ2 = 0 against Ha : all possible
alternatives with exact significance level  = 0.1;
(iii) Assume μ1, μ2, sigma1, sigma2 are unknown. Find the likelihood ratio
test for testing H0 : μ1 = μ2, sigma1 = sigma2 against Ha : all possible
alternatives with approximate significance level  = 0.1;
(iv) Assume sigma1^2 = sigma2^2 = 5/2. In order to test H0 : μ1âˆ'μ2 = 0
against Ha :μ1 âˆ' μ2 = 1 we suppose the loss function is such that L(1, 1) =
L(0, 0) = 0 and L(1, 0) = L(0, 1) = 2. Find the minimax test and evaluate the
power function of this test at μ1 âˆ' μ2 = 0 and μ1 âˆ' μ2 = 1.

Hi
I get your point that you are trying to convey,
(1) Not able to display the label with zero frequency
You have to think out of the box here.For example if you have two variables one is AGE and other is frequency like
AGe          Frequency
0-21          .00
21-50         .00
21-50         .00
21-50        1.00
21-50        1.00
21-50        2.00
21-50        2.00
51-80         .00
51-80        1.00
51-80        1.00
51-80        2.00
51-80        2.00
Dont use frequency, use CASE Summary. Use Freq as variable and AGE as grouping variable. Use Sum as statistics from statistics tab.You will get some thing like this

Case Summaries

Sum

AGe

freq

0-21

.00

21-50

6.00

51-80

6.00

Total

12.00

Is it ok or are there any other issue. There are many ways to do one thing in spss. This is one of them.
Note: Using SPSS 15.

Dear fellows,
I would like to introduce Data Clinic and its new information portal at
http://www.dataclinic.org/
Data Clinic is a clinical research organisation that offers services in the
biostatistical analysis of medical and pharmaceutical research data. The site
has a selection of projects ongoing and completed by the Data Clinic team. It
also has a informative list of analyses available. To name a few:
Simple tests (OR, t test etc) Linear, logistic, Poisson regression, GLM,
Random effect Repeated Measures, Survival Analysis (Recurrent event and single
event),
Meta-analysis, Continuous Quality Improvement, Inter-rater agreement and much
more.
Please check out the site.
However this site is more than that, it aims to be an information portal.
Currently there is a forum (found uniquely at http://www.biostatistics.in )
where you can discuss biostatistics, medical research, Indian research scene and
the Australian research scene. There is a library where you can upload PDF
Articles regarding these same discussion topics. There is a guestbook for you
the user's most important input. We will add further modules like an event
manager and based on the user group's requirements.

The entire site is FREE but you do need to register to prevent spamming of the
site.

Yours Sincerely,
Mithilesh
from the Data Clinic Team

Dear Statisticians,
I have a finanial data set --which is non-normal.
After  I have satisfied that the time series is stationary and regress with another time series --the residuals I capture is again non-normal i.e.fattailed - extreme observations are there along less mass in the flanks and I dont want  to chop them off as outliers. Hetreoscedasticity may be there but no autocorr...well  no autocorrr does not gurantee no temporal deppendence --but just let me take it as granted.
I am thinking of fitting it by mixture normal(trial & error!!!!--any other option?then GEV perhaps....) as in central part approx80-85% of the observations lie which are well behaved.

Anyone who fit a (financial) data by mixturenormal ? How do you estimate the parameters in SAS/MATLAB?
I have some code which can simulate a mixture normal...that wont help.
Any help ...will go long way in helping me.

Hi
SAS certification in Gujarat is a luxury, which is not available right now. Although you can inquire at SP university statistics department  VV Nagar. They were planing to coach SAS at their facility.

where alpha1, beta1, alpha2, beta2 and P are constants in the pdf. I have the pair wise data of x and y.

I want to find out maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) of alpha1, beta1, alpha2, beta2 and P based on the pairwise data I have. Is there any way to do this in SAS or other statistical softwares?

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

%let min=0;
%let space=%sysevalf((&max.-&min.)/50);
data one;
%let i=&min.;
%do %while (&i.<&max.);
max=&max.;
min=&min.;
i=&i.;
output;
%let i=%sysevalf(&i.+&space.);
%end;
run;
%mend;
%looping;

Please help to me to correct my macro.

Hi Madan,

I am not sure why you do want to write too many macro statements in this. in
your code, do while loop comparing character valuess and when it comes 7 th
observation &i value become character 2.1 and &max is character 19. Note
that binary value for character 2.1 is greater binary value for 19. thats
why loop stop iterating after 6th observation.
A simple solutions

%macro looping;

%let max=19;

%let min=0;

%let space=%sysevalf((&max.-&min.)/50);

%put &space;

data one;

i=(&min.);

k=(&max);

space=(&space);

do while (i < k);

i=i+space;

output;

end;;

run;

%mend;

%looping;

%**** this is just to show why you are getting 6 observation*/

data binary;

a='19';

b='2.1';

k=19;

l=2.1;

run;

data binary1;

set binary;

ninec=put(a, binary.);

twoc=put(b, binary.);

if (ninec + 0 )>(twoc + 0) then flagc='BIGNINE';

else flagc = 'BIGTWO';

ninen=put(k, binary.);

twon=put(l, binary.);

if (ninen +0) > (twon +0) then flagn ='BIGNINE';

else flagn='BIGTWO';

run;

Please let me know if any one has any comment.

Hello Madan,

You can use your same code with small modification :).

Replace the %do %while (&i.<&max.);? in the datastep with %do %while (%sysevalf(&i.<&max.));

%sysevalf is?the evaluation function used in SAS macro.

Thanks,

Re: Macro Problem

Dear friends,

Thanks for all the replies I have received in a short span of time.
My problem got resolved.

I have been suggested to use simple data step code and not the
macro. But unfortunately that will not work for me. This is because
both max and min are  not prespecified and it takes values from the
previous dataset. In fact, I have 90 datasets, each of them
containing 2000 observations. I have to calculate min and max for
each of the dataset separately, and then to repeat the loop in each
dataset and finally each dataset will contain arounf 0.1 million
observation.

Thanks again.

in this. in your code, do while loop comparing character valuess and
when it comes 7 th observation &i value become character 2.1 ?and
&max is character 19. Note that binary value for character 2.1 is
greater binary value for 19. thats why loop stop iterating after 6th
observation.

Thanks for suggestion.
There is no such facility at S.P.University. If you can suggest any good place in Mumbai or Pune,than it ll be nice of you.

Hi
SAS certification in Gujarat is a luxury, which is not available right now. Although you can inquire at SP university statistics department  VV Nagar. They were planing to coach SAS at their facility.

I want to do SAS but in Gujarat there is no place for it. Can anyone suggest good place from where I can get SAS certified? Can I do it at home? Any books for SAS and software of SAS download site?
