Re: [SunnyLUG] New GPL...(Importance of LGPL)   Message List

Hi group!!

Howz LGPL and GPLs are making difference?

The Open source is everywhere now. Developers are sparing time (part or full) towards
the open source software. But the question is who is benefitting more. There are
two versions of GPL. One is GPL itself and the other one is LGPL. GPL is fine because
it mandates you to make the source code available under GPL if you are using GPL'd
libraries or programs in any way. But on the other hand the LGPL says that , for instance;
in case of host applications that are using dynamic linking, you need not licence your code
under GPL. It only mandates that if the LGPL'd library is modified in any way the host application
must be able to use that modified library. That draws attention to a feature that if the host
application is statically linking to a LGPL library the object code to the host application must
be provided so that it can be again linked against the library.

Are the developers given there code for LGPL working for free for the companies that use
their code? Its simple!! Just create a simple application, dynamic link against all the needed
LGPL libraries, distribute the application and make money!! Are we working for free!! That
sense free software is not free as in freedom, free as in beer!!

Anyone against this thought??

New GPL takes shots at patents, DRM.

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) on Monday released a draft version of its new GPL (GNU General Public License) version 3 software license designed to address two increasingly important issues in the software industry: software patents and DRM (digital rights management). This document is the first major revision to the popular software license in 15 years and, if adopted, will change the terms under which a variety of open-source software, including Linux, Samba and MySQL, is used. It was released Monday at the First International Conference for GPLv3, a two-day conference being held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
