Bullet Proof Templates in OpenOffice.org:
http://www.tuxmagazine.com/node/1000186 -- Bruce Byfield has written a
lot of OpenOffice.org documentation, both articles and books, and
we're excited that's his bringing his tips, tricks and general OOo
expertise to TUX Web site readers. Here, he explains to new users how
templates function differently in OOo than they do in other office
suites. Follow his advice to save a lot of headaches later on.
Making Signs with The GIMP:
http://www.tuxmagazine.com/node/1000185 -- Even if you aren't familiar
with drawing and photo programs, such as Photoshop, and don't consider
yourself much of a visual artist, take a few minutes to play around
with The GIMP. Our Web Editor demonstrates how The GIMP helped her
create colorful, print-worthy signs with photos and text in a short
amount of time, no prior experience necessary. Use her example as a
starting point for creating your own photo or drawing artwork.
Tech Tip
When you're using a graphics program to manipulate photos or other
types of images or artwork you want to print, save your files as
PostScript (.ps) files. PostScript is device independent, which means
files generally are printed in the same way, no matter what type of
printer is used. In other words, the way your .ps file looks when
printed on your printer is how it will look on your colleague's
printer across town.
From Our Sister Publication
Linux Journal -- Net Neutrality vs. Net Neutering:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8910
Doc Searls wants you to think beyond our current Net service provider
framework: "Let's think seriously about this. What would happen if we
de-regulated carriage at the federal level and encouraged it at other
levels? How about if we opened up more spectrum as well? (Including TV
Channels 2-13, which are due to be liberated by 2009 in the US?)
Wouldn't we like to see the carriers get some real competition? Why
should your neighborhood be limited to a choice of one cable and one
phone provider? Why not drop the definitions of both and let everybody
carry whatever they want?"
