Yes Yahoo Groups unfortunately got banned in certain circles because of Govt. of
India's decision to but a ban on a terrorist organization which uses Yahoo
Group. This organization is known as 'Kynhun'. Instead of nabbing the people
behind this terrorist outfit, Govt. has but a blanket ban on Yahoo Group. This
is in fact very annoying, and very unfortunate and has already resulted in many
representations. But all has fallen to deaf ear. Mostly, all the networks that
go through NIC (National Informatics Centre) are affected. In my organization
this is not a problem as we have .res.in and not .nic.in suffix. Some of the
ISPs also have bein obedient in putting up this ban. AT home I use either
DishNet Dial or Data Indosys as my ISPs and these have no problems and I access
yahoo groups without any hassel.
This ban in fact is not a big deal, as there is a fairly simple way out of this
problem. What you can do is, by pass your proxy server and instead use various
freely abvailable public proxy servers that have high anonymity. You can find
out the IP addresses of such public proxy servers at www.stayinvisible.com. But
a word of caution. This strategy will not work on a client within a intranet.
The IP address of the public proxy server needs to be set at the server end that
sits between your intranet and the rest of the www. I always use publec proxy
servers on a dial up network. And since Govt. of India has'nt got control over
these public proxy servers, the blanket ban means nothing.
