Xandros Desktop 2.0 (Open Circulation ed) tested   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #793 of 1439 |
Friends,
After getting the Xandros Desktop 2.0 (open circulation edition) CD, I have
installed it on my computer and it took me 25 minutes with expert install mode
where I selected the complete desktop option (full install). And I feel it is
the best Linux Desktop experience I have ever had.
The best thing, my winmodem is working perfectly well. I have been using it with
Linuxant drivers, but after installing these later only after the installation
of other distros used to be over. But Xandros did the installation for me. In
just one day Xandros has displaced Mandrake from top position in my own Ranking
chart. It is no doubt a complete Linux desktop.
A big change that I found with Xandros is that the default (and the only) web
browser it flaunts is Opera 7.50 with integrated M2 mail client. Opera is good
except for the ad-strip you have to tolerate in the free edition. The M2 mail
client is also very good and extremely usable.
Like Mandrake, you need not mount and unmount a CD drive. It is as simple as
pushing in the CD tray to mount. The Xandros File Manager automatically opens up
and you are ready to browse the contents of your CD. To unmount simply press the
CD eject button on the CD tray and the CD comes out.
The Xandros File Manager is very well integrated and good.
Overall the look and feel of the desktop is awesome. The graphic desktop
environment is created by an enhanced version of KDE 3.1.4.
And do remember Xandros Desktop is based on the Debian 4.0 (sarge) distribution.
Deb packages are the preferred method for installing new applications. However,
the alien facility is included with Xandros Linux that allows users to install
rpms. Using this method may allow you to successfully install an rpm.
Try it out. You are going to love it.
Oh, I forgot to tell you where to get your copy of this wonderful distro. Buy
the latest Linux For You magazine and your get it as CD#1 this month.

Regards
-Tarun
