The main page of the Openoffice.org has been carrying this news for quite a
while now:

Chennai, India, 15 April: On Tamil New Year, BharateeyaOO released its version
of OpenOffice.org in Tamil bundled with other free software on a CD. A near riot
ensued. Seven hundred packed into the auditorium, thousands waited outside. The
media picked it up. For more information see: www.openoffice.org

Hi All

This is tangent to the ongoing UBUNTU discussion thread. For those who want to
try Ubuntu but feeling a bit discouraged by the default desktop to be Gnome can
try KUBUNTU. Kubuntu is the first Ubuntu derived distribution. And don't worry,
its not another fork but is an official part of Ubuntu. All the packages are in
the same archives. You can download it from http://www.kubuntu.org/index.php

Those who have already installed Ubuntu and using it can simply do this as 'su'
while connected to the net:

    1. Make sure you are using hoary in your /etc/apt/sources.list
    2. apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Unfortunately, Kubuntu CDs are not freely shipped like Ubuntu, but you can
download for free. Best bet for those with slower connections would be to get
Ubuntu and then aptget Kubuntu desktop. As simple as it possibly can be :->

I agree Himanshu. OSS should be supported in what ever ways possible (technical,
advocacy, financial). And yes donations is what they welcome (through Paypal).
They have a donation page which can be found here:
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/donations/document_view
You can also support Ubuntu by buying their merchandice. Visit Ubuntu Shop
(http://www.cafepress.com/ubuntushop/). The Ubuntu project receives a small
percentage on these sales which will be used to top up the bounty fund.

But let me tell you more about Ubuntu and who is sponsoring it. The Ubuntu
Project is a community project with participation from many volunteers,
sponsored by Canonical Ltd. Canonical (http://www.canonical.com/) will not
charge licence fees for Ubuntu, now or at any stage in the future. Canonical's
business model is to provide technical support and professional services related
to Ubuntu. Canonical is a global organisation headquartered in the Isle of Man,
with employees throughout Europe, North America, South America and Australia.

And it is important to know how Ubuntu is different from bare Debian or other
Debian based distros. As a volunteer organization, Debian has historically been
less good at making time-based or predictable releases, and has a difficult time
providing accountability. Stable releases of Debian have been few and far
between in recent years. The more raw unreleased versions of Debian do not
provide security fixes for individual packages that are rapidly changing, but
are incorporated in development work. That's where Ubuntu comes in. Ubuntu makes
a release every six months, and supports those releases for 18 months with daily
security fixes and patches to critical bugs. Ubuntu and Debian are distinct but
parallel and closely linked systems. The Ubuntu project seeks to complement the
Debian project. Check out the Ubuntu Guide which I feel is a complete manuscript
in all respects (http://www.ubuntuguide.org/).

I reckon that you should visit the Ubuntu website (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/).
It is so rich. They have every thing in place and all their acts are well
together.

Cheers

This is unbelievable stuff. In a marked departure from its earlier stand,

Subject: Tamil Openoffice a.k.a BharateeyaOO in Tamil CDs distributed

Hi,

Some developments ( read exciting developments ) in the localisation
sphere by the BharateeyaOO group at CDAC, Electronics City, Bangalore
center ; it was known as National Center for Software Technology in
its previous version. For all purposes this is an unofficial
announcement.

1. Tamil Openoffice was launched by the IT Minister on the 15th of
this month at Chennai. More details here [
http://cdac.in/html/press/2q05/prs_rl164.asp ]

2. The target is to release 3 million cds. Not sure about how many
have been distributed so far. But if that figure is reached this will
have to be one of the biggest distributions of openoffice in the
world.

3. Contents of the CD
1 Tamil Openofffice also known as Tamil BharateeyaOO
2 Open type fonts and true type fonts
3 Firefox 1.0.2 with the Tamil Langpack
    4 Gaim with Tamil UI
5 Columba a java based email client with Tamil UI
    6 Some other cool stuff

There is a need to tell more people about this please forward this
mail to relevant lists/individuals.

The localised openoffice is available on our website
www.ncb.ernet.in/bharateeyaoo for download. We have taken space on
sarovar.org but no access to SSH from inside the network. If someone
can help in uploading to sarovar that would be cool. Our own web
server is just not geared to take heavy loads. As of now downloads are
not allowed inside office hours.

Also any ideas how to start Gaim with a hindi UI in windowx XP? Or how
do I set hi_IN locale in windowsXP.

Anyone has any contacts in Mozilla.org. I have been trying to get in
touch and submit our langpacks to them but they never respond.

regards

Akash

With the 'Theme' on SunnyLUG looking very 'Debian', here is a nice article for
all Debian fans:
- "It’s All About the Debians"
By Jason Perlow published in 'Linux Magazine' which says, "Debian, the
distribution with the largest base of available software packages and the
largest development community, has now come of age."

Online version of this article can be found here :

Cheers,

Knowing English is not bad, but ignoring mother tongue is.

a) to lilo.conf add: 'append = "mem=255M"' (for 256 mb RAM)
b) run: 'lilo -v' to re-initialise boot sector

Which sound archietecture are you using als aor OSS.
In case of alsa you need to unmute the speakers after
installation. use alsamixer to unmute speakers

To fix screen resolution try dpkg-reconfigre xfree86
; if you are using xfree86

For net please provide details about your isp and
your connection type.

Hi!!

Why only Germany? Russia has always been an example for this even before
computers were ubiquitous. Now China is doing the same thing! Korea is another
example.

Well, I have this experience with Korea. In one of my projects, I had to
deal with them. They won't respond promptly because none of their engineers are
good at english. The communication stalls untils some interpreter gets
in between.
And because of this many important issues remain unanswered and you are left
puzzled with whatever hardware docs they provide.

Another thing, there is just one language in common and that is "C". They put
comments in Korean!!

But still major section on this earth uses english.

Thanks and regards

I completely share the sentiments of Dr. Rai. and Mukesh. Couple of days back an
Indian guy joined our department here at Cambridge in England and he came to me
in Tea room where we all were sitting and started talking to me in English. I
tried to reply in Hindi but looking at his persistance I had to switch to
english as well. But I was feeling terrible in front of all others suddenly
looking at us. When he left one of the persons from Denmark asked me -"hey why
were you guys speaking in english when you are from the same country with your
own national language. And I can't express how much shame I felt. And funny
enough I avoid this guy now a days because I know he will speak in English which
to me here in Britain is embarassing, talking to your own countrymen in a
foreign land, who knows Hindi well.

However, I feel English is also an important language. I feel it is one truely
international language. One has to know know English in todays world, and all
those who are educated have the ability to read and write English. For me, with
a career in science, I can't do without it because 99% of the literature is
published in this language. But the important thing is what one feels for his
mother tongue. To me my own language is something that gives me a sense of true
patriotism.

But it has to come from us Indians from within, to make our national character,
our language(s) reflected in our day to day use including computers. For most of
us in what ever jobs we are into, Computers are now a days playing a more direct
role. No one but us Indians have to think of promoting and developing our own
language support on computers. IF "we the people" want it, even multinationals
will come out and pour in the money. There should be some fellowships for
students to develop this. And government can help here for sure.

India's very own -C-DAC (Center for Development of Advance Computing) has been
doing a lot of work in this direction to promote Indian language support on
Computers. C-DAC has pioneered the 'Graphics and Intelligence based Script
Technology' (GIST) which facilitates the use of Indian languages in IT. GIST has
now been known for more than a decade and has become synonymous with the
standards for Indian language applications in IT. The initial development
started in 1983 at IIT-Kanpur for an Integrated Devnagari Terminal, a DoE
sponsored project. The terminal, demonstrated in 1986 during the Vishwa Hindi
Sammelan at Delhi, was considered a breakthrough in technology. Based on GIST is
'LEAP Office' which is a complete Indian language software for office
applications.

And recently I have heard that C-DAC's GIST has been ported to UNIX as well and
I feel should be tried for Linux machines. I don't know whether it has been
ported to UNIX or it was UNIX compatible from the very start, but is something
that should be tried out. Even if it is strictly for Windows platform, WINE can
probably help it run on Linux platform. This can be easily tried out as there is
a free downloadable version of LEAP if I remember it right. I'll try to look
into it and see if this thing works. Because I have tried something called iLEAP
once and I was very pleasently surprized and thrilled by it. You can use it even
if you don't know the Devnagri keyboard layout. What I tried about a year ago
had support of umpteen Indian languages and their criss cross translation
capability as well.
